  • Bills confident defense is up to the challenge of facing Lions

Bills confident defense is up to the challenge of facing Lions

The Bills defense had a rough time of it against the Rams on Sunday and things aren’t going to get any easier for the unit in Week 15.

Los Angeles put up 357 yards while converting 11-of-15 third downs in their 44-42 win and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said there were a “conglomeration” of reasons for the team’s issues on that side of the ball. Babich said he was one of the “people not doing their jobs at a high level” and that’s a tricky place to be in when the next game is a road date against a Lions team that is scoring more than 32 points a game.

Babich said he has confidence that he and the players can put together a better plan this time around.

“I believe our guys are up to the challenge, and they’re ready to respond,” Babich said, via the team’s website.

The Bills have clinched the AFC East and the loss to the Rams is going to make it difficult for them to catch the Chiefs for the top seed in the conference. The Steelers also have a 10-3 record, so the second seed is still up for grabs and a strong defensive showing in Detroit would improve the Bills’ chances of landing it.

  • Bills’ stunning loss to Rams ends 245-game winning streak by NFL teams in this situation

Bills’ stunning loss to Rams ends 245-game winning streak by NFL teams in this situation

    Getty Images

The Buffalo Bills got a super human performance from Josh Allen on Sunday, but despite his huge game, the Bills still managed to lose to the Los Angeles Rams in one of the wildest games of the 2024 season.

With the loss, the Bills made NFL history by basically inventing a new way to lose. Going into Week 14, NFL teams that scored at least six touchdowns with zero turnovers had gone 245-0 in the Super Bowl era (including playoffs).

That record is now down to 245-1 with Buffalo’s 44-42 loss to the Rams. Allen made NFL history by scoring all six of Buffalo’s touchdowns in the game (You can read more about Allen’s historic game here). The loss also marked the first time in franchise history that the Bills have lost a game when scoring 40 points, with their record dropping to 53-1.

With that in mind, let’s check out 12 more of the wildest stats from Week 14 (via CBS Sports research, unless noted):

Josh Allen makes NFL history. The Bills QB became the first player in regular-season history to have three passing touchdowns AND three rushing touchdowns in a game. If you include the postseason, the only other time that’s happened came back in 1954 when Otto Graham did it in the NFL Championship Game. Allen now has five career games with at least two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns, which moves him past Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young (four games) for the most in NFL history.Highest-scoring game of the season. The Rams and Bills combined for 86 points, which makes it the highest-scoring game of the season, topping a game that happened just last week when the Steelers beat the Bengals 44-38. The Rams’ 44-42 win marked just the second time in in NFL history that two teams combined for five…..

Week 14 instant reactions: Bills’ stunning loss, Darnold’s hot streak, Seahawks lead NFC West | Inside Coverage

In this week’s Inside Coverage, Jason Fitz and Frank Schwab react to every game from the Week 14 NFL Sunday slate. Fitz and Frank start with some of the more interesting outcomes, including the Kansas City Chiefs escaping with a close win on Sunday night and the Buffalo Bills’ stunning loss to the Los Angeles Rams, as Josh Allen’s historic fantasy performance wasn’t enough to save them. The Minnesota Vikings beat the Atlanta Falcons, as Sam Darnold continues to shine while Kirk Cousins struggles, leading Frank to wonder about Minnesota’s offseason plans. Over in the NFC, the Seattle Seahawks asserted themselves as the best team in the NFC West, dominating the Arizona Cardinals, with Frank predicting they’ll win the division.

Later, Fitz & Frank dive into the rest of the Sunday slate. In Tennessee, the Jaguars handed the Titans another blowout loss, leaving Frank wondering if it’s time for a major rebuild. The Las Vegas Raiders’ nightmare season continued with a cheap shot injury to Aidan O’Connell, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seized control of the NFC South. Are the San Francisco 49ers still alive in the NFC playoff race? Fitz and Frank break down all the key takeaways, with a special focus on how the Bills, Vikings, and Seahawks stack up for the playoff push.

  • NFL Week 14 bold predictions: Both Los Angeles squads shock AFC top seeds by beating Chiefs, Bills

NFL Week 14 bold predictions: Both Los Angeles squads shock AFC top seeds by beating Chiefs, Bills

Week 14 of the 2024 NFL season is underway after a thriller on “Thursday Night Football” in which the Detroit Lions hung on to defeat the Green Bay Packers 34-31 with a buzzer-beating field goal.

Could the rest of Week 14 be just as exciting? Here is how the remaining Week 14 slate could unfold with increased levels of stunning outcomes in our latest iteration of our CBS Sports bold predictions.

    1. Chargers snap six-game losing streak vs. Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the bogeyman of the AFC West since they are on the precipice of clinching their ninth consecutive division title for the second-longest division title winning streak in NFL history. Only the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick New England Patriots dynasty teams (11 in a row from 2009-2019) have a longer such streak.

However, the Los Angeles Chargers will deny the Chiefs a party at Arrowhead Stadium Sunday night by snapping a six-game losing streak against the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Patrick Mahomes and Co. have been begging to lose week in and week out despite starting 11-1 in 2024. They have…

  • Sheldon Rankins, Orlando Brown Jr. out for Bengals Monday night

Sheldon Rankins, Orlando Brown Jr. out for Bengals Monday night

The Bengals have turned in their final injury report before Monday night’s game against the Cowboys.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. have been ruled out. Rankins missed practice all week with an illness and Brown was called doubtful to play early this week by head coach Zac Taylor. Brown returned to the lineup last weekend after missing two games with a fibula injury, but the same injury will keep him out against Dallas.

Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase (ankle), quarterback Joe Burrow (right wrist), and right tackle Armarius Mims (ankle) are all set to play as they did not receive injury designations.

Wide receiver Charlie Jones (groin) is their only questionable player.

  • Arch Manning to the Cowboys? NFL legend Archie Manning wants grandson to play for Dallas after Texas career

Arch Manning to the Cowboys? NFL legend Archie Manning wants grandson to play for Dallas after Texas career

Two decades ago, Archie Manning was vocal about his desire to have his youngest son, Eli Manning, not play for the Chargers, who ended up trading Eli to the Giants after initially drafting him with the No. 1 overall pick. Archie, a decorated quarterback in his own right, has now revealed his preferred NFL destination for his grandson, current Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning.

“I hope he’ll play three years at Texas, I hope he’ll play three more years,” said Archie, who starred collegiately at Ole Miss before being a multiple-time Pro Bowl quarterback with the New Orleans Saints. “It’s funny, nobody has ever asked me that. Right off the bat, if somebody asks me, I’d say the Cowboys.”

Archie’s answer is somewhat of a surprise given the Cowboys’ current situation at quarterback. The team recently gave Dak Prescott a record-setting contract that will keep him in Dallas through the 2028 season.

Archie, however, may not consider that a bad thing, as it would give his grandson time to develop in the NFL before possibly becoming a starter. Arch, who is currently a redshirt freshman, can’t declare for the NFL Draft until next year anyway, and he could decide to prolong his college career beyond that given the new NIL format.

This season, Arch has played in seven games for the Longhorns, who at 11-1 are a shoo-in to participate in the newly expanded College Football Playoff. He’s completed nearly 68% of his passes with 9 touchdowns against just 2 interceptions. Arch threw for a career-high 325 yards and two touchdowns in Texas’ 35-13 win over Mississippi State on Sept. 28.

Arch is following in the footsteps of quarterback royalty. Archie, despite being saddled on a bad Saints teams for most of his NFL career, was named to two Pro Bowls and tabbed as Sporting News’ Player of the Year in 1978. Archie’s middle son, Peyton, is a two-time Super Bowl champion as well as the…

  • Eagles-Panthers player matchups to watch in Week 14

Eagles-Panthers player matchups to watch in Week 14

Eagles-Panthers player matchups to watch in Week 14 originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles (10-2) are hosting the Carolina Panthers (3-9) at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday afternoon.

Here are some key matchups to watch:

Saquon Barkley vs. Panthers run defense

Barkley is right in the mix of the MVP conversation this year and for good reason. He’s just one rushing yard shy of the 1,500-yard mark and is still on pace to break the NFL’s single-season rushing record. Last week, he faced the NFL’s top-ranked run defense entering that game and toughed it out for 107 yards on the ground. This week? He’ll face the NFL’s worst run defense. The Panthers have given up 166.8 yards per game this season, which ranks 32nd in the NFL. They are also giving up 4.8 yards per pop, which ranks 27th in the NFL.

The Panthers played tough and lost a close one to the Buccaneers last week 26-23 but they gave up a season-high 236 yards on the ground in that game. Bucs running back Bucky Irving had 25 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown in that one and was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. In their two games since getting back from their bye week, the Panthers have given up the most yards after contact per carry (4.4) in the NFL. And their explosive play rate of 18.5% is the fourth highest in the NFL.

And for the season, the Panthers have given up 1.96 yards before contact per attempt, which ranks 28th in the NFL. The Eagles’ offensive line has been so good at creating giant holes this season and they will have an opportunity to do that on Sunday. And even when they don’t, Barkley should be able to create after contact. It’s a recipe for another big rushing performance.

    Jordan Mailata vs. Jadeveon Clowney

At one point this season, Chuck Harris led the Panthers in sacks but then he was waived and claimed by the Eagles. The Panthers’ new leader in sacks is a familiar name: Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney is 31 now and the former No. 1 overall pick is…

Lions vs. Packers NFL props, Thursday Night Football picks, AI prediction: Josh Jacobs over 75.5 rushing yards

The Detroit Lions (-3.5, 51.5) will look for the season sweep of the division-rival Green Bay Packers when the two teams meet on Thursday Night Football. Detroit won at Green Bay in Week 9, when backing the Under in NFL prop bets for quarterbacks turned out to be the right decision. Jared Goff had just 145 passing yards, while Jordan Love failed to throw a touchdown pass. If a similar story unfolds on Thursday, then Packers vs. Lions props for the Over may want to zero in on the running backs instead.

Josh Jacobs has 95 rushing yards in the Week 9 meeting, David Montgomery had 96 scrimmage yards, and Jahmyr Gibbs had 76 total yards and a score. Montgomery has a lengthy and productive history versus the Packers, dating back to his time with the Bears, as he has averaged 108.4 scrimmage yards over his last eight games against Green Bay.
