Report: Trevor Lawrence will undergo shoulder surgery

Already on injured reserve with a concussion, Trevor Lawrence’s season likely was finished anyway.

If there was any questions about whether he might return for Week 18, the Jaguars quarterback now definitively is done.

He will undergo season-ending surgery on the AC joint injury in his left shoulder, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.

Lawrence is expected to recover from his head injury before dealing with his “significant” shoulder issue.

He injured his non-throwing shoulder in Week 9 against the Eagles and missed two games before returning to face the Texans on Sunday. Lawrence lasted only 19 plays, though, after Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair’s illegal hit after the quarterback slid.

Al-Shaair, who was ejected for the hit, lost his appeal of a three-game league suspension Wednesday.

It ends the worst season of Lawrence’s career, as he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Now, it’s on to 2025 as Lawrence will get a jump on the rehab process by undergoing surgery before the end of the season.

  • Prisco’s Week 14 NFL picks: Lions survive Packers, Chiefs handle Chargers and Cowboys officially bury Bengals

Prisco’s Week 14 NFL picks: Lions survive Packers, Chiefs handle Chargers and Cowboys officially bury Bengals

There are five weeks left in the NFL regular season. That means I have five weeks to turn things around with my picks. Over the course of the past seven weeks, I’ve gone rotten like a hard-boiled egg left in the fridge for four months.

    It stinks. So do I.

I can’t get anything going with my picks. This is by far the worst season I’ve had, so do with these picks what you will.

I went 7-9 against the spread and 12-3 straight-up in Week 13. That brings my ATS season record to 87-105-3 and my straight-up record to 120-75-0. The latter is solid, but the ATS mark is putrid.

I will have to rip off some impressive weeks just to try to get to .500.

Can it happen? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not, but I did switch some things up this week. Let’s hope it works.

This is an enormous game for the NFC playoffs and the division. The Lions have a lot of important players out on defense, which could help the Packers. But the Lions have a dominant offense that will score here as they run it against the Packers front. I think Jordan Love will keep the Packers in it. It’s close.

    Pick: Lions 35, Packers 33

Bonus: SportsLine expert R.J. White, who is on a 73-31-2 roll on Packers games, feels strongly about one side of this NFC North matchup. To see who he’s picking against the spread, head on over to SportsLine.

These two are playing out the string, but the Dolphins have looked much better over the past month. The Jets have done little on offense, while Miami can throw it around. Look for Tua Tagovailoa to play well as the Dolphins handle the Jets.

    Pick: Dolphins 31, Jets 19

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (Fox, fubo try for free)

The Falcons have been lifeless on offense the past few games. That has to change, but that will be tough as Kirk…

Fantasy Football Week 14 Rankings: RBs (Full-PPR)

Miami Dolphins RB De’Von Achane has seen a decline in his efficiency since his rookie season, but his work as a receiver has been more than enough to keep him more than afloat in full-PPR scoring fantasy football leagues. (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)

There wasn’t a player in the NFL with a wider range of potential outcomes in fantasy football year than De’Von Achane, coming off a wildly efficient rookie campaign where he averaged an absurd 7.8 yards per attempt on the ground, totaling 800 rush yards and 8 touchdowns on just 103 attempts. Though he’s seen some regression in his overall rushing efficiency this year (now averaging 4.1 YPC, 50.4% rush success rate compared to 7.8, 54.4% in 2023), he’s more than made up for it with his high volume as a receiver.

Achane ranks second among all RBs with 62 targets this year, second in receiving yards (429), first in yards after the catch (401) and first in receiving touchdowns (6) among all RBs. With Tua Tagovailoa under center, Achane has been nearly unstoppable, finishing as a top-seven RB in all but one game since Tagovailoa’s return from injury in Week 8.

  • Josh Allen throws and catches TD on same play for spectacular snow-game score like you’ve never seen

Josh Allen throws and catches TD on same play for spectacular snow-game score like you’ve never seen

Well, you haven’t seen this one before.

Josh Allen scored one of the more remarkable touchdowns of this — or any season — Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Buffalo Bills quarterback was credited with a touchdown pass and a touchdown reception on the same play. But somehow he came away without a reception in the box score.

    Here’s how it went down.

The Bills faced first-and-goal in the third quarter while holding a 21-3 lead. Allen took a snap from under center and thew a quick pass in the left flat to Amari Cooper. Cooper juggled the ball before gaining control.

By the time Cooper had corralled the pass, two 49ers defenders were on him and he was facing the opposite end zone, looking directly at Allen, who’d continued running to his left.

So Cooper gave Allen the ball right back. He lateraled the ball backward to Allen, who caught it and then ran around the left edge. He then dove past three 49ers defenders with the ball outstretched in his right hand.

Allen hit the pylon with the ball for a Bills touchdown to extend Buffalo’s lead to 28-3. And Highmark Stadium went wild. Not even in their wildest snow-game dreams could Bills fans have imagined this one.

And again — in addition to earning the passing touchdown — Allen was credited with a receiving touchdown. But he wasn’t credited with at catch. The catch belongs to Cooper for a two-yard loss. Here’s how it looks in the NFL.com play-by-play.

    NFL.com

Allen also rushed for at touchdown on Buffalo’s next drive. Per NBC, he’s now the first quarterback in NFL history to log a rushing, passing and receiving touchdown in the same game.

Have yourself a night, Josh Allen. And enjoy, Bills fans. And good luck to fantasy managers trying to sort this one out.

  • What’s next for Steelers’ Russell Wilson? NFL executives assess wide-ranging market value for veteran QB

What’s next for Steelers’ Russell Wilson? NFL executives assess wide-ranging market value for veteran QB

Less than three years ago, he was traded by the franchise he won a Super Bowl with. Eleven months ago, the Broncos benched him and eventually absorbed the biggest dead cap hit in NFL history.

And come March, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson could be the crown jewel of the free-agent quarterback class.

A weak free-agent class, coupled with a weak draft class, makes for an interesting supply-and-demand question for the league at its most important position. And Wilson, set to be an unrestricted free agent after this season, could have some options.

Wilson, 36, is currently playing on a one-year, $1.21 million veteran minimum contract in Pittsburgh, thanks to the Broncos still paying Wilson $39 million. The Steelers also have Justin Fields, who’s in the final year of his rookie contract and will also be an unrestricted free agent in March.

The Steelers famously do not negotiate during the season, so there’s no shot that an extension for anyone will take place until the season has concluded. And there’s a desire within the building to not only retain Wilson but also Fields.

The likely reality is the team will have to choose one in the offseason, and conventional wisdom would point to the franchise choosing the player it selected to start over a healthy Fields when the team was 4-2.

But if a recent survey of NFL executives is any indication, figuring out Wilson’s market is going to be difficult. Text responses around the league asking for the expected average-per-year contract for Wilson made for the NFL’s version of a Rorschach test.

Executive 1: “Think a lot depends on how he finishes up the season and how Pittsburgh views him. If they make some noise in the playoffs, Geno [Smith] at [$25 million]. If he fizzles down the stretch, he’s a bridge/backup at [$10-12 million].”Executive 2: “I think he will get more than those top backup/bridge QB deals ($8-10 million),…..

  • 49ers waive wide receiver Bell amid rocky 2024 season

49ers waive wide receiver Bell amid rocky 2024 season

49ers waive wide receiver Bell amid rocky 2024 season originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The Ronnie Bell era in San Francisco is over. At least for now.

The 49ers announced they waived the second-year wide receiver on Friday, less than two seasons after San Francisco selected Bell No. 253 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Bell wraps up his 49ers tenure with eight receptions for 90 yards and three touchdowns across two seasons.

The sophomore wideout has received plenty of criticism this season, most notably for a brutal performance in San Francisco’s Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams where Bell dropped multiple passes in critical spots.

A year was all the difference, as Bell initially burst on the scene with a promising preseason for the 49ers during his rookie season. He finished the 2023 preseason with the NFL’s fourth-most receiving yards, hauling in 10 receptions for 172 yards in three games.

That initial momentum never developed into consistent production or playing time in the regular season, with Bell’s high point likely being his first NFL touchdown in a primetime win over the New York Giants last season.

Bell departs the 49ers with just two receptions for 22 yards in 9 games during the 2024 NFL season.

  • NFL issues statement on bizarre penalty at the end of Chiefs’ Black Friday win over Raiders

NFL issues statement on bizarre penalty at the end of Chiefs’ Black Friday win over Raiders

    Getty Images

In what was somehow not the strangest ending to a Thanksgiving weekend NFL game, the Kansas City Chiefs survived a Black Friday scare against the division rival Las Vegas Raiders thanks to a combination of bizarre game management and a perhaps even more bizarre penalty ruling.

With just 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Raiders spiked the ball on second down at the Chiefs’ 32-yard line. On the following play, center Jackson Powers-Johnson snapped the ball before center Aidan O’Connell was ready for it, the ball hit the ground and the Chiefs recovered it.

After the ball was recovered, it seems like the play had in fact been blown dead due to a false-start penalty. But after the officials conferred for a while, that penalty was instead changed to an illegal shift, which the Chiefs declined. They kept the ball and kneeled on it to end the game, rather than having to defend another snap after a false start, which would have erased the fumble because it’s a pre-snap penalty.

After the game, the NFL explained why the play was ruled that way.

“Had the clock been running at the snap, then by rule an illegal shift would convert to a false start,” a league spokesman said, via The Athletic. “Since the clock was stopped (spike on the second-down play), an illegal shift is a live ball foul.”

Surely, that explanation will satisfy all the conspiracy theorists who are convinced that the league just gifts calls (and wins) to the Chiefs, so there’s nothing more to worry about on that front.
