  • Agent’s Take: 2025 franchise tag projections and potential candidates who could get designated

Agent’s Take: 2025 franchise tag projections and potential candidates who could get designated

NFL teams can retain the rights to one of their impending free agents in 2025 with the use of a non-exclusive tag, an exclusive franchise tag or a transition tag during a 15-day period from Feb. 18 to March 4.

Traditionally, players aren’t happy when given a franchise tag. The designation can hinder the ability to gain long-term security because players must incur the risk of serious injury and poor performance again after already playing out their contracts when an agreement on a multiyear deal can’t be reached. In these cases, the franchise tag is essentially a high-salaried, one-year, “prove-it” deal.

The franchise tag operated more like it was originally intended this year. The designation was a precursor to a long-term deal. Seven of the eight players (87.5%) given franchise tags signed multiyear contracts.

That’s a big change from the previous three years (2021-23). Less than half of the time (11 of 24 or 45.83%) during this time frame was a long-term deal signed while under the designation.

A look at how franchise and transition tags work and the projected 2025 numbers are below.

    Tag logistics

How franchise and transition tenders are calculated is misunderstood. The confusion makes most attempts at projecting these numbers wrong.

Prior to the 2011 NFL collective bargaining agreement, non-exclusive franchise tags had been an average of the five largest salaries in the prior year at a player’s position or 120% of the prior year’s salary of the player, whichever was greater. For franchise tag purposes, salary means a player’s salary cap number, excluding workout bonuses and most other performance bonuses.

The 120% and five largest salaries provisions have remained intact but the formula component is now calculated over a five-year period that’s tied to a percentage of the overall salary cap. More specifically, the number for each position is derived by taking the…

  • Williams not practicing doesn’t bode well for his return this season

Williams not practicing doesn’t bode well for his return this season

Williams not practicing doesn’t bode well for his return this season originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Programming Note: Watch “49ers Now” with Matt Maiocco and Jennifer Lee Chan at 4 p.m. PT today from Santa Clara, streaming live on the NBC Sports AppYouTube and Facebook.

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers again don’t have Trent Williams on the practice field to start the week, which does not bode well for the All-Pro’s return before the end of the 2024 NFL season.

“If he could get back to healthy, we’d play him,” coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday. “But it’s not like that right now. It’s getting closer to being that way.”

Williams, dealing with an ankle injury, could miss his fifth consecutive contest since the 49ers made the game-time decision to allow him to play in their Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The left tackle was seen on the field with athletic trainers and medical staff before the game while simulating the movement he would have to perform during the contest.

Shanahan explained the challenge of weighing the decision to give Williams the green light to play against the long-term ramifications.

“Yeah, you always do,” Shanahan said. “Trent, with what we had, and what we are still trying to deal with, we felt safe putting him out there, that it couldn’t get worse, that it would just stay the same.”

The 49ers faced a similar decision with Nick Bosa as he recovered from a hip/oblique injury, which was shortly followed by a similar injury on the opposite side of his body.

“With Nick, we felt good with his oblique,” Shanahan said. “But he ended up hurting the other one. It was a completely different injury. We always worry about that stuff and there’s a very fine line.”

Bosa missed three games before returning in Week 14 and will be limited in Wednesday’s practice session.

In positive news for the defense, Dre Greenlaw appears to be in good health after playing 30 snaps and registering eight total tackles — three…

  • NFL MVP scenarios: Josh Allen is the favorite, but could Lamar Jackson or Saquon Barkley move past him?

NFL MVP scenarios: Josh Allen is the favorite, but could Lamar Jackson or Saquon Barkley move past him?

With just three weeks remaining in the regular season, we have a pretty good idea of the shape of the race for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. There’s a favorite, a No. 1 contender, an underdog story and a few players with outside chances of snagging the award.

What we don’t yet know is how the final few weeks will play out. But that’s likely what will determine which player actually gets the trophy. So, we wanted to use this space to lay out the scenario in which each of the current top five contenders can become the eventual MVP.

Status: The favoriteRemaining schedule: vs. Patriots, vs. Jets, at PatriotsHow he wins: Stay the course

Allen is the heavy favorite at the moment, and it’s hard to dethrone the favorite. That’s especially true given the way the Bills close the season. They have three games remaining, all against two of the NFL’s worst teams. If the Bills go 3-0 and Allen has characteristically excellent performances, someone is going to have to do something pretty spectacular to take the award away from him.

Status: The No. 1 contenderRemaining schedule: vs. Steelers, at Texans, vs. BrownsHow he wins: National TV greatness

Jackson is the player best positioned to snatch the award out of Allen’s grasp. It helps that his numbers are already better than Allen’s. He has more passing yards and touchdowns, fewer interceptions and more rushing yards, and he leads the NFL in EPA per play, according to Tru Media. But Allen is winning the perception game thanks to his alien-esque talent, Buffalo’s record and his recent national TV heroics.

Here, the schedule actually works in Jackson’s favor. He has two pretty tough opponents over the next two weeks — and both games are island games on days where the NFL doesn’t usually play. He gets the Steelers this coming Saturday, then the Texans in a Wednesday afternoon Christmas game. Those two teams also happen to have good…

Ex-Pats exec details meetings with Krafts in Belichick’s first season as HC

Ex-Pats exec details meetings with Krafts in Belichick’s first season as HC originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Jerod Mayo’s first season as New England Patriots head coach hasn’t gone swimmingly, nor did the debut campaign of arguably the greatest coach in NFL history.

Bill Belichick went 5-11 as Patriots head coach after replacing Pete Carroll in 2000. The new regime in Foxboro faced a myriad of challenges, including an aging roster and the lack of an identity as they adjusted to their third head coach in five years.

Belichick’s first season as the Pats head coach also marked Scott Pioli’s first season in the front office. Pioli served as assistant director of personnel in 2000, director of player personnel in 2001, and vice president of player personnel from 2002-08.

Just as 2024 has been a rocky season under Mayo, there were plenty of trials and tribulations behind the scenes in Foxboro before the Patriots’ six-Super Bowl dynasty. Pioli joined Tom E. Curran’s Patriots Talk Podcast to shed light on how he and Belichick collaborated with owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft, as well as other front-office leaders, as they aimed to turn the franchise around.

“At least once a week, Bill and I met with Robert, Jonathan, and Andy Wasynczuk. Andy was the president at the time,” Pioli said. “We would sit in these meetings and talk about everything. It was a really interesting point in the relationship. Bill had worked with Robert previously as a defensive coordinator. They had a good friendship, they had a good relationship, and at the time, it was a rough season. That 5-11, there was a lot going on. The other thing was we were changing the culture. It had been this culture under Parcells, it changed under Pete, and then it was changing back. So we had some players that knew what the drill was going to be. We had some players that were in,…

  • NFL Week 15 grades: Vikings earn ‘A-‘ for beating down Bears, Josh Allen leads Bills to ‘A’ in win vs. Lions

NFL Week 15 grades: Vikings earn ‘A-‘ for beating down Bears, Josh Allen leads Bills to ‘A’ in win vs. Lions

Welcome to the Week 15 grades!

The NFL playoff race is in full swing, and there are several big games on the Week 15 schedule that will have huge playoff implications. One of those games took place in Houston, where the Miami Dolphins wilted under the pressure of playing in a must-win game with a 20-12 loss to the Texans.

After throwing zero interceptions in his past four games, Tua Tagovailoa had a meltdown with three picks against the Texans. The Dolphins are now 1-11 since the start of the 2023 season against teams that are over .500.

In Detroit, Josh Allen made an MVP statement by throwing for 362 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-42 win over the Lions. Allen has now led the Bills to at least 42 points in back-to-back games.

The Eagles also made a statement Sunday that they might be able to steal the top seed in the NFC from the Lions. Detroit’s loss combined with Philadelphia’s win over the Steelers means the Eagles and Lions are now tied atop the NFC at 12-2. The Vikings joined them at 12-2 on Monday night with their comfortable win over the Chicago Bears.

With that in mind, let’s get to the Week 15 grades.

    Minnesota 30-12 over Chicago

    Atlanta 15-9 Las Vegas

    Houston 20-12 over Miami

    Kansas City 21-7 over Cleveland

    Cincinnati 37-27 Tennessee

    Washington 20-19 over New Orleans

    Baltimore 35-14 over N.Y. Giants

    Dallas 30-14 over Carolina

    N.Y. Jets 32-25 over Jacksonville

    Arizona 30-17 over New England

    Denver 31-13 over Indianapolis

Tampa Bay 40-17 over L.A. Chargers

    Buffalo 48-42 Detroit

    Philadelphia 27-13 over Pittsburgh

  • Curran: Mayo’s postgame comments ‘invite more dysfunction’ to team

Curran: Mayo’s postgame comments ‘invite more dysfunction’ to team

Curran: Mayo’s postgame comments ‘invite more dysfunction’ to team originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots put on another lackluster performance Sunday in Arizona, but head coach Jerod Mayo’s questionable postgame remarks overshadowed anything that transpired on the field.

After the 30-17 loss, Mayo was asked by NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry about a consequential sequence in the third quarter. The Patriots trailed the Cardinals 16-3 and faced a third-and-1 from Arizona’s 4-yard line. Antonio Gibson and Rhamondre Stevenson were stuffed on back-to-back run plays for no gain on third and fourth down, respectively, resulting in a turnover on downs and a missed opportunity for New England.

Did Mayo consider running the ball with his 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback Drake Maye in those short-yardage situations?

“You said it. I didn’t,” Mayo answered.

That bizarre response seems like a clear shot at offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Perry and fellow NBC Sports Boston Patriots insider Tom E. Curran dissected Mayo’s statement on Patriots Postgame Live.

“We should have been talking about the football game and the things the Patriots didn’t do well to start their four-game stretch, and instead we’re gonna talk about a situation that Jerod Mayo made worse,” Curran said. “He should be talking about those aspects, and if he’s gonna say continually, ‘These are my decisions, I’m gonna make these decisions, they all start and end with me,’ to take a question and then infer that, ‘Yeah, you’re right, we should have run Drake Maye,’ that undercuts the entire thing and undercuts Alex Van Pelt. And to then circle back and later say, ‘Yeah, it’s all on me,’ it is again another rake stepped on.

“But this is probably the most prominent rake because Alex Van Pelt — if you don’t want him to call those plays, if you don’t want him to run it inside the red zone, tell him, ‘Don’t run it inside the red zone; we’re not doing that anymore.’ So this, to me,…

NFL DFS, Packers vs. Seahawks: Top DraftKings, FanDuel daily Fantasy football picks for Sunday Night Football

The Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers will take center stage on Sunday Night Football in a game with massive playoff implications. Green Bay had its three-game winning streak snapped in a 34-31 loss at Detroit last week, but the Packers scored at least 20 points for the fourth straight game. Running back Josh Jacobs scored three touchdowns to bolster NFL DFS lineups, giving him 11 scores this season. He is facing a mediocre Seattle run defense that ranks No. 21 in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game (126.5), but should you include Jacobs in your NFL DFS strategy?

The Packers have leaned heavily on their rushing attack this season, ranking fifth in the league in rushing yards per game (144.7). • What fans believe 49ers should pay Purdy per year with new contract

What fans believe 49ers should pay Purdy per year with new contract

What fans believe 49ers should pay Purdy per year with new contract originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The 49ers have made it clear Brock Purdy is their quarterback of the future, but exactly how much are they willing to pay him?

San Francisco fans weighed in with what they believe Purdy deserves before the 49ers’ 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, offering their opinions when NBC Sports Bay Area asked how much the 24-year-old’s looming contract extension should pay him on an annual basis.

A majority of the 49ers Faithful polled (38 percent) believe Purdy should receive a contract extension in the $20 million- to $30 million-per year range, while 29 percent view him worthy of anywhere from $31 million to $40 million per year. Fewer fans think Purdy should earn more, with 19 percent voting for the $41 million to $50 million range and 14 percent choosing $51 million to $60 million.

Purdy has struggled in some instances during the 2024 NFL season as the 49ers deal with a slew of injuries and other off-field hardships. San Francisco owns a 6-8 record entering Week 16, but Purdy still stands to secure a significant payday thanks to his résumé as a starter and the current quarterback market.

For comparison, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is the NFL’s highest-paid at the position, and in league history, earning an average of $60 million per year on his four-year, $240 million contract. Other quarterbacks making over $50 million per year include Jalen Hurts ($51 million), Lamar Jackson ($52 million), Justin Herbert ($52.5 million), Jared Goff ($53 million), Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million), Trevor Lawrence ($55 million), Jordan Love ($55 million) and Joe Burrow ($55 million).

There is only one NFL quarterback earning an annual average in the $20 million to $30 million range, where most Faithful believe Purdy belongs, and that’s Seattle Seahawks signal-caller Geno Smith ($25 million). Beneath Smith is Gardner Minshew ($12.5 million), and above…
