Wisconsin football 2026 quarterback Ryan Hopkins stats ESPN game

Wisconsin football class of 2026 quarterback commit Ryan Hopkins shone in Mater Dei’s 26-23 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.

In a nationally-televised matchup on ESPN, the future Badger flashed his offensive brilliance, completing 13 passes for 272 passing yards and three touchdowns. A bulk of his production arrived in the second quarter, a period during which Mater Dei scored 26 unanswered points to take a 26-3 edge before intermission.

Specifically, Hopkins completed eight of his 14 first-half tosses for 232 yards. All three of his touchdowns arrived in the second quarter as well.

The California product ignited Mater Dei’s surge with a 22-yard score to five-star wide receiver and future Ohio State Buckeye Chris Henry Jr., who showed out with four catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Hopkins would complete another deep ball, this time an 81-yard strike, to Henry for another score roughly five minutes later, ballooning his crew’s advantage to 17.

The four-star pass-thrower’s most impressive throw arrived with just 30 ticks to spare in the second frame. Hopkins fielded a snap in shotgun, stepped back and zipped a 62-yard ball over the middle of the field to Monarchs’ receiver Gavin Honore for the score.

While he didn’t produce at the same clip in the second half, Hopkins showcased why a bevy of programs have extended him collegiate offers. Hopkins committed to Wisconsin back in April over top contenders Missouri, Cal and Duke.

He remains the one quarterback committed to a class that currently ranks No. 61 in the nation and No. 16 in the Big Ten. 247Sports currently considers Hopkins as the No. 555 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 31 quarterback and the No. 42 player from his home state.

Hopkins did receive an offer from hometown program UCLA earlier this month, but he has yet to offer…

Shedeur Sanders vows to ‘keep getting better’ as Browns preseason ends: ‘There’s a lot to learn’

Shedeur Sanders has been the most talked-about fifth-round rookie in NFL history already, and the discourse revolving around the Browns’ quarterback reached new levels after the third week of the preseason.

Sanders, after struggling mightily throughout the second half of Cleveland’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, made way for Tyler Huntley, who led the Browns on a game-winning drive. Sanders was caught off guard by the decision but took to Instagram on Sunday to express his gratitude to fans and determination to continue improving.

“Thanks everyone for the [love] and support,” Sanders wrote in the caption. “There’s a lot to learn from this preseason, but I’m really thankful for the opportunity to be out there. Day by day, rep by rep, I’ll keep learning and getting better.”

Saturday night concluded an uneven preseason for the former Colorado star and the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado coach Deion Sanders.

Sanders, 23, impressed in his unofficial NFL debut, tossing a pair of touchdown passes against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 of the preseason. However, just as soon as he was set to parlay that performance into an increase in reps, he suffered an oblique injury that sidelined him in Week 2. Then, against the Rams, he completed just three of six passes for 14 yards and took five sacks across five drives.

  • Browns release QB Tyler Huntley

    Browns release QB Tyler Huntley

The Browns look like they are going to keep four quarterbacks on their active roster, but Tyler Huntley isn’t one of them.

A day after leading the Browns to a last-play win over the Rams in the preseason finale, Huntley is in search of a new home. The team released Huntley on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The move was expected, with Huntley having signed only after injuries to Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders during training camp. Huntley went 17-of-22 for 129 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.

Joe Flacco will start for the Browns with Pickett or Gabriel expected to serve as the backup.

Huntley, 27, spent training camp with the Browns last year and was one of four quarterbacks kept on the initial 53-man roster. The Browns released him days later, though, after failing to trade him.

Huntley later signed with the Dolphins and went 2-3 as a starter.

Several teams could use a veteran backup quarterback, including the Raiders and the Cowboys.

College football odds: Penn State, Notre Dame among 10 best bets for perfect regular seasons in 2025

In college football’s playoff era, only five programs have notched perfect seasons en route to a national championship with Michigan being the most recent in 2023. But now, the parity playoff expansion has brought to the sport — and the possibility of a team playing as many as 16 games on their way to the title game — the likelihood of an unblemished campaign is considerably low.

If it happens during the 2025 season, that team may go down as the new “best-ever.”

Courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook, here’s a look at the 10 teams with odds at +800 or better for going unbeaten during the regular season, along with the potential path for each:

Toughest games: vs. Oregon, at Ohio State

Expectations are other-worldly for Penn State this season, perhaps at their highest levels since the 1980s when Joe Paterno won both of the program’s national championships over a five-year stretch. James Franklin’s roster is the best he’s ever had in Happy Valley. He’s averaging 9.6 wins per season since the 2016 campaign with five top-10 finishes during that stretch. If Penn State snaps an eight-game losing skid to the Buckeyes, there’s a great chance the Nittany Lions get to Indianapolis without a loss.

‘I didn’t know I was out’: Shedeur Sanders was shocked that Browns benched him late in fourth quarter vs. Rams

With just over two minutes left to play during Saturday’s preseason game between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams, Shedeur Sanders thought he was going to get a chance to lead a game-winning drive, but instead, he got sent to the bench.

With Cleveland trailing 17-16 and just 2:03 left to play, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski made the decision to take out his rookie quarterback in favor of Tyler Huntley, who just signed with the team less than three weeks ago.

If Sanders would have stayed in the game, it would have given him a prime opportunity to lead a potential game-winning drive in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, but instead, he had to watch as Huntley led the Browns to a game-winning field goal that gave Cleveland a 19-17 victory. Following the game, Sanders said he was surprised to learn that he was being pulled.

“I didn’t know I was out,” Sanders said after the game. “Yeah, I didn’t know. I was on a bike, I was powering up. I was powering up for that two minute drive because that’s just a situation every quarterback dreams for. That’s many situations I’ve been in before, and I thought I was in, so then he told me I wasn’t in and I was like, ‘OK.’”

After he was told that he was being taken out, Sanders actually went up to Stefanski and requested to stay in the game.

“Yeah, I definitely did,” Sanders said about whether he asked to keep playing.

  • College football Week 0 winners, losers include Iowa State

College football Week 0 winners, losers include Iowa State

Projecting the best records for the top college football conferences

USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg breaks down who he thinks will win the in each of the Power 4 conferences and the Group of Five.

    Sports Seriously

Iowa State’s victory in Ireland might be the impetus for back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins in program history. In the debut of a shiny, new stadium, Kansas showed to be a Big 12 contender to watch.Stanford interim head coach Frank Reich made a crucial mistake in a loss to Hawaii.

Conference championships aren’t won or lost in Week 0. The games still count the same, though.

No. 21 Iowa State’s 24-21 win against No. 20 Kansas State in Ireland was the headliner of a five-game Week 0 slate that served as the amuse-bouche to the main course of the regular season, set to begin in earnest on Thursday.

There just aren’t enough data points to form any big-picture takeaway: Kansas State could be really good, which means Iowa State might be terrific; both teams could be pretty average; both teams might be pretty good, which seems like the most likely scenario.

PATH TO PLAYOFF: Sign up for our college football newsletter

Thinking down the line, though, you can see how the Cyclones’ win ends up carrying serious weight as a tiebreaker in a Big 12 that once again looks anything but predictable. Honestly, the Wildcats didn’t have to go all the way to Dublin to lose Farmageddon – they’d been doing that just fine stateside for the past seven years.

That’s one reason why the season-opening loss feels familiar for Kansas State. A year ago, the Wildcats opened the year as the league’s co-favorites alongside Utah but dropped four games, three in November. While the Big 12 abolished the preseason poll after Arizona State’s worst-to-first finish in 2024, KSU was by consensus seen as one of the favorites for…

  • Derrick Harmon ready to “attack” his rehab in order to get back quickly

Derrick Harmon ready to “attack” his rehab in order to get back quickly

Steelers first-round defensive lineman Derrick Harmon saw his rookie season flash before his eyes. He revealed Saturday that in Thursday night’s preseason finale that he initially got hit in the knee the play before he was carted off the field.

That was when the injury apparently occurred.

He played through it the next play before he was twisted to the ground awkwardly when he and Panthers offensive lineman Brandon Walton got tangled. Harmon didn’t get up, requiring a ride to get off the field.

“I thought it was serious, but it wasn’t that serious,” Harmon said, via Teresa Varley of the team website. “But still something I’ve got to be in the training room to get my rehab. That’s my focus right now — to attack rehab and do what I have to do to get back on the field.”

Coach Mike Tomlin reiterated Saturday that Harmon sprained his knee and is week-to-week. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that it’s a sprain to Harmon’s MCL, an injury that will keep him out only 4-6 weeks.

The Steelers will not place Harmon on injured reserve, Dulac reports, with the season opener still 15 days away.

“Definitely frustrated,” Harmon said. “Last preseason game and really excited to get out there in the regular season and compete at a high level. It sucks, but it’s part of the game we play, so just got to attack this rehab.”
