Perry: Pats D experienced ’11 minutes from hell’ vs. Rams

Perry: Pats D experienced ’11 minutes from hell’ vs. Rams originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots defense shut out the Los Angeles Rams in the first and fourth quarters of Sunday’s matchup, but a nightmare 11-minute stretch ultimately led to their demise.

L.A. scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters to take down New England, 28-22. The Matthew Stafford-led offense scored TDs on four of their five drives during an 11-minute span filled with questionable defensive coaching decisions.

Our Phil Perry highlighted the Pats’ horrific defensive performance in those 11 minutes during Patriots Postgame Live.

“They fell apart in the middle of the game,” Perry said. “They couldn’t stop the run, they couldn’t stop the pass. This was 11 minutes from hell for the Patriots. They allowed touchdowns on four out of five drives. They allowed 9.9 yards per play in just 11 minutes of time of possession for the Rams, and they allowed an 80 percent success rate which is absolutely through the roof. The Ravens coming into Week 11 led the league in success rate — offensive success rate — at just a shade over 50. So the Patriots are allowing 80 percent of the Rams’ plays to be successful. They’re either staying on track or they’re creating explosive plays or they’re scoring the football. You can’t live that way.”

The unit bounced back with a big stop to give the offense a chance to retake the lead with just under three minutes to go. It was too little, too late as rookie quarterback Drake Maye tossed the game-ending interception on a miscommunication with wide receiver DeMario Douglas.

“I understand they got enough stops at the end of the game to give the offense a chance to win at the end of the game. Good for them on that front. They were eventually able to figure it out, I guess,” Perry added.

“But you can’t have 11 minutes where you allow basically 10 yards per play, especially with this Patriots offense, the way it’s constructed. You just can’t…

“Both of these teams had their games go down to the wire last week, and I expect that to be the case here, which is why we’ll take the field goal with Pittsburgh and even predict the upset. The strength of the Ravens this season has been their ability to run the football with their two-headed monster attack with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. Entering Week 11, the Steelers are holding opponents to a 3.8 yards-per-rush average, which is tied for the third-best in the NFL. So, even if they mildly slow down Henry, it’ll go a long way in keeping them within the…

  • Patriots releasing 2022 second-round pick Tyquan Thornton: Report

Patriots releasing 2022 second-round pick Tyquan Thornton: Report

Patriots releasing 2022 second-round pick Tyquan Thornton: Report originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots are thinning the ranks in their wide receiver room.

The Patriots are releasing third-year wideout Tyquan Thornton, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday.

Thornton’s release ends a disappointing tenure for the 24-year-old, whom Bill Belichick’s Patriots selected in the second round (50th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Baylor product boasts blazing speed (he ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine) but could never translate that to on-field success.

Thornton tallied 22 receptions for 247 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, which would all be career highs; he caught 13 passes for 91 yards over nine games in 2023 and has been an afterthought in the Patriots’ 2024 offense, with just four catches for 47 yards in six games played.

Thornton is one of several busts from New England’s 2022 draft class, Belichick’s second-to-last with the franchise. The Patriots selected the 6-foot-2, 185-pound wideout two spots ahead of Pittsburgh Steelers star George Pickens and three spots ahead of Alec Pierce, who had more yards as a rookie for the Indianapolis Colts (593) than Thornton has in his career to date (385).

After Thornton’s release, the Patriots have just one player from their 10-man 2022 draft class (cornerback Marcus Jones) on their active roster. (First-round pick Cole Strange is on the Physically Unable to Perform list, while sixth-round pick Kevin Harris is on the practice squad.)

The Patriots reportedly were open to dealing Thornton ahead of the 2024 NFL trade deadline but found no takers.

  • NFL Week 11 injury tracker: Latest updates on Tee Higgins, Amari Cooper, DK Metcalf and other players

NFL Week 11 injury tracker: Latest updates on Tee Higgins, Amari Cooper, DK Metcalf and other players

Now that we are 10 weeks into the NFL regular season, all 32 clubs are dealing with injuries. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to his hamstring injury, tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Sam LaPorta are dealing with knee and shoulder injuries that forced them to the sideline this week, and Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has already been ruled out for the second straight game due to a shoulder injury.

Let’s take a look at how each NFL team is faring from a health standpoint. Below is a rundown of every team’s final injury report entering this weekend’s games.

All NFL sports betting odds courtesy of BetMGM.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Friday that Lloyd woke up that morning with appendicitis. The Packers are checking with the NFL to see if there is a way Lloyd can play later this year, as Green Bay has already opened Lloyd’s 21-day practice window.

The Bears received some positive news Friday as both Sweat and Moore were full practice participants. Doug Kramer Jr. will likely replace Jenkins in the starting lineup. Kramer’s most notable play this year was his fumble near the goal line during Chicago’s Week 8 loss to the Commanders.

Jacksonville had previously announced that Lawrence will be out this week, but made it official on Friday. This now sets up Mac Jones for his second consecutive start.

LaPorta is one of several Lions players will miss Sunday’s game. With LaPorta out, backup tight end Brock Wright could see more targets after catching nine passes during the season’s first nine games.

Minnesota is largely healthy heading into this matchup as Murphy — who is currently in his 21-day practice window — is the lone player ruled out for Week 11. No other player carries an injury designation.

Neither Sneed nor Watson practiced at all this week, so those two officially being ruled out…

  • Bourne expected to play vs. Rams after getting zero snaps in Week 10

Bourne expected to play vs. Rams after getting zero snaps in Week 10

Bourne expected to play vs. Rams after getting zero snaps in Week 10 originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

It sounds like Kendrick Bourne will play more of a role in the New England Patriots offense Sunday afternoon versus the Los Angeles Rams than he did in last week’s win over the Chicago Bears.

Bourne was active for the Week 10 matchup against Chicago and had no injury designation, but he surprisingly did not play a single offensive snap. The Patriots beat the Bears 19-3 to improve their record to 3-7 entering Sunday’s Week 11 showdown versus the Rams at Gillette Stadium.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked at his press conference Friday whether he expects Bourne to play this weekend, to which he replied, “Yes.”

“Kendrick has had a good week of practice,” Mayo added. “Sometimes you need — I don’t want to call it a wake-up call, but to go out there and be active and not have any snaps, he’s a driven individual. He’s a very good player, we’ve just got to get him going.”

Why didn’t Bourne play against the Bears?

“There was a lot that went into that,” Mayo told reporters last Sunday after the Week 10 victory. “Any time you put the active roster together … we thought that was the best thing to do for us to give us the best chance to win. All those guys bring a certain skill set to the game; we just didn’t know who was gonna play more. And it just played out that way.”

Bourne last saw snaps in the Patriots’ Week 9 overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans. He caught four passes for 41 yards on six targets in that game. He has eight receptions for 70 yards in five games after making his season debut in Week 5 versus the Miami Dolphins.

It’s no secret the Patriots lack high-end talent at wide receiver, and they have not gotten consistent production from any one player at the position this season. If you look at the six players with the most receptions on the team through 10 games, only two of them are wideouts (DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte).

    Bourne is a dependable…

  • Overreactions from Eagles win over Commanders: Is the NFC East race over? Did Jayden Daniels get exposed?

Overreactions from Eagles win over Commanders: Is the NFC East race over? Did Jayden Daniels get exposed?

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles took command of the NFC East with a 26-18 victory over the Washington Commanders on Thursday night, and the game wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Eagles outgained the Commanders 434-264 and averaged 6.2 yards per play to the Commanders’ 4.2.

Philadelphia (8-2) has a two-game lead in the loss column over Washington (7-4) with the victory, as the Eagles have won six in a row. Washington has dropped two straight after a 7-2 start, losing two games on Philadelphia in the divisional standings in five days.

Is the NFC East race over? Are the Commanders figured out? Which overreactions are truly overreactions from Thursday’s showdown and which are reality?

Eagles wrapped up NFC East with win

    Overreaction or reality: Overreaction

While the Eagles victory over the Commanders was impressive, this isn’t a game that determined the NFC East winner. It’s fair to say this was a “must-win” game for the Eagles in order to take control of the division, one which they have a two-game lead in the loss column with seven games to play.

The Eagles did have a commanding lead in the NFC East after Week 11 last season before they collapsed, but this team is significantly different. This isn’t about what the Eagles will or won’t do in the final seven games. The Commanders have a pretty easy schedule before they face the Eagles again in Week 16.

Washington faces Dallas and Tennessee at home before its bye week. A road game at New Orleans follows on the schedule before the rematch against Philadelphia in Week 16. Washington then finishes with a home date against Atlanta and a road game against Dallas. Four of the next five games are at home, and the next three games are against teams with losing records.

Philadelphia has road dates at Los Angeles and Baltimore, before home games against Carolina and Pittsburgh ahead of the Week 16 showdown at Washington….

  • Commanders vs. Eagles score, live updates: Thursday Night Football pits NFC East rivals in massive Week 11 opener

Commanders vs. Eagles score, live updates: Thursday Night Football pits NFC East rivals in massive Week 11 opener

Week 11 of the NFL season kicks off with a huge NFC East matchup that has a chance to decide a host of factors heading toward the playoffs. The 7-2 Philadelphia Eagles host the 7-3 Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football this week, with the two teams coming off very different finishes in Week 10. The Eagles were the latest team to blow out the Cowboys in Dallas, while Washington couldn’t hold on to a late lead at home against the Steelers.

Philly has won five straight games, and with a win Thursday, would stay connected to the 8-1 Detroit Lions, who currently occupy the top spot in the NFC. The Commanders, who’ve won three of four, would take the NFC East lead with the win on the road, and will host the second game between the two teams in Week 16. Jayden Daniels enters the week still leading the race for Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Jalen Hurts is fifth in the NFL in passer rating and second in the league in rushing touchdowns.
