  • Micah Parsons insists he wasn’t throwing “Mike McCarthy under the bus” with postgame comments

Micah Parsons insists he wasn’t throwing “Mike McCarthy under the bus” with postgame comments

Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons pushed back against the perception he was taking a shot at coach Mike McCarthy in his postgame comments Sunday.

“I never once threw, or even intended to throw, Mike McCarthy under the bus,” Parsons said on his The Edge with Micah Parsons podcast. “The question that was asked about here and the Dallas Cowboys. Did I see Mike McCarthy in our future? I said, ‘That’s above my pay grade.”

Parsons wasn’t pleased that critics turned his comments into something he didn’t mean.

He was asked about McCarthy’s future after a fourth consecutive loss and said the future of the coaches isn’t his top concern.

“That’s above my pay grade, about if Mike’s coaching again next year,” Parsons said after the Cowboys’ 34-6 loss to the Eagles. “All coaching aside, Mike can leave and go wherever he wants. Guys I kind of feel bad for is guys like [right guard] Zack Martin and guys who might be on their last year, on their way out, because that’s who I wanted to hold the trophy for.

“You want to win games and do great things with those type of legends who put in more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did. So those are the kind of guys that I have so much sympathy and hurt for.”

McCarthy said Monday that he and Parsons discussed Parsons’ postgame comments, and Parsons has apologized.

McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, as is the rest of the coaching staff, and the Cowboys are expected to move on after this season.

  • NFL prioritizing expanding international series to Australia, pondering holding Pro Bowl Games there in future

NFL prioritizing expanding international series to Australia, pondering holding Pro Bowl Games there in future

With the NFL concluding its international series Sunday with the Panthers and Giants in Germany, international expansion in the coming years continues to be at the top of mind for league executives.

Outside of London, where the NFL has for years centered its international operations, the country seeing the greatest investment from the NFL is Australia. Sources tell CBS Sports the NFL could hold a regular season game on the island continent as early as the 2026 season, and the NFL has pondered playing the Pro Bowl Games Down Under at some point in the future.

Though the NFL is expanding its international games to eight for the 2025 season, it is believed that Australia — specifically Sydney and Melbourne — will have to wait another year for a game. The NFL has conducted site visits to both cities as it continues to work through the logistical hurdles.

Despite a time difference larger than any other lands currently being explored by the league — Sydney is 16 hours ahead of Eastern time — the NFL is eager to get to Australia for a regular season game. Consider the investments the league has made there: In 2022, the NFL tabbed New Zealand native Charlotte Offord to be the general manager for its Australian efforts. In September of this year, the league opened an NFL Academy on Australia’s Gold Coast that will develop student athletes between the ages of 12 to 18.

The Australian academy is the second international academy the league sponsors, following suit with the United Kingdom. An “elite high-performance NFL Academy facility on existing college grounds” in Australia will be completed by 2026, the league announced earlier this year.

Australia entices the NFL for several reasons. There is a vibrant sports scene there, and there’s no language barrier. It is distinct from the European expansion the league has endeavored, and no other major American sports league has penetrated the…

  • Bill Belichick praises Drake Maye, rips Bears after Patriots win

Bill Belichick praises Drake Maye, rips Bears after Patriots win

Bill Belichick praises Drake Maye, rips Bears after Patriots win originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Over Drake Maye’s first five NFL starts, one aspect of the rookie quarterback’s game has stood out to ex-New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Belichick briefly praised Maye’s mobility following the Patriots’ 19-3 victory over the Chicago Bears.

“I think he’s done a good job when he’s been able to scramble and run around,” Belichick said on Monday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show. “Made some plays on play-action where they can separate the defense because the running game, when (Rhamondre) Stevenson can get it going, draws some of the coverage and the linebackers up and so forth.”

Maye ran for 24 yards on four attempts — including a 19-yard scamper — during New England’s Week 10 win. Prior to Sunday, he was the Patriots’ leading rusher in each of his starts except in Week 8 vs. the New York Jets, when he exited early due to a concussion. He had 95 rushing yards on eight carries in Week 9 vs. the Tennessee Titans.

After acknowledging Maye, Belichick quickly turned his attention to the dysfunction in Chicago.

“To me, the bigger thing is just where the Bears are,” he said. “I mean, they can’t protect, they can’t move the ball, they can’t score any points. … They have this All-Star quarterback, these All-Star receivers, the greatest skill players in the history of football, and the offensive line is a problem, they can’t run the ball, they can’t protect.”

The Bears totaled only 142 yards in Sunday’s game, which marked their third consecutive defeat. Quarterback Caleb Williams, the top pick in the 2024 draft, was sacked nine times.

While Maye outplayed his counterpart, it was the defense that led the way in the Patriots’ road win. The 22-year-old signal-caller began his postgame press conference by clapping it up for the team’s defensive effort.

Maye and the Patriots will look to earn their third win in four games when they host the Los Angeles Rams next…

  • Dak Prescott injury update: Cowboys QB not placed on injured reserve ahead of Week 10, return status up in air

Dak Prescott injury update: Cowboys QB not placed on injured reserve ahead of Week 10, return status up in air

The Dallas Cowboys could be without starting quarterback Dak Prescott for a while. Cowboys COO Stephen Jones confirmed Friday the plan is to place the NFL’s highest-paid player, who signed a four-year, $240 million extension in September, on injured reserve.

“Right now, I don’t think anyone knows whether it will be four weeks, six weeks or the season,” Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, via The Athletic. “We’ll just have to continue to monitor that and see where it takes us.”

Prescott was not placed on injured reserve Saturday, per NFL Media. This means if he is placed on injured reserve now, the earliest Prescott could return is in Week 15 for the Dec. 15 game against the Carolina Panthers. The Cowboys not placing Prescott on injured reserve Saturday also means he could return in less than four games, although it’s unknown how likely that is.

Immediately after the injury, Jerry Jones didn’t provide a timeline for Prescott, other than to confirm the quarterback wouldn’t play in their Week 10 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The three-time Pro Bowler had an MRI on Monday to determine the degree of the injury, and according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the results indicated a more serious injury than initially feared.

On Wednesday, NFL Media reported Prescott’s initial diagnosis was a partial avulsion of his hamstring tendon, meaning it is partially torn off the bone. In many cases, surgery is required to fix the issue, but there are some situations where waiting to let it scar over, repair and then strengthen through physical therapy and other methods could work. On Wednesday morning, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said the decision about whether or not to place the quarterback on injured reserve had not yet been made.

The Cowboys were overmatched in their Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons, a 27-21 defeat. And that was before losing Prescott for…

  • Shanahan concerned ‘to a degree’ about Bosa’s 49ers-Bucs status

Shanahan concerned ‘to a degree’ about Bosa’s 49ers-Bucs status

Shanahan concerned ‘to a degree’ about Bosa’s 49ers-Bucs status originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

While 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan prepares for Sunday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there is concern San Francisco could be without one of its stars.

All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa officially is listed as questionable for Sunday, dealing with a hip injury suffered during Wednesday’s practice.

“I am to a degree,” Shanahan told reporters when asked if he’s concerned about Bosa’s availability for Sunday’s game in Tampa. “He wasn’t able to do a lot. He definitely was extremely limited. Hoping he’ll be alright, but we’ll see on Sunday.”

Shanahan further clarified that Bosa was not previously injured heading into the 49ers’ Week 9 bye.

“No, just banged into someone, got a little hip pointer,” Shanahan said. “Just bothered him, I think it was real early in Wednesday’s practice.”

Bosa leads the 49ers with 4.5 sacks this season and would be a brutal loss for San Francisco’s defense if he’s unable to suit up Sunday.

The 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year also has a well-documented rivalry with Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, dating back to their college days.

As the 49ers attempt to climb above .500 for the first time since starting the season 1-0, Bosa’s status will be a key storyline to watch heading into the weekend.
