  • Marcus Freeman contract extension: Notre Dame coach lands lucrative new deal ahead of College Football Playoff

Marcus Freeman contract extension: Notre Dame coach lands lucrative new deal ahead of College Football Playoff

    Getty Images

Before his team begins play in the College Football Playoff, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has agreed to a significant contract extension with the school.

According to Irish Illustrated, Freeman has landed a four-year extension that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country at more than $9 million per year. Freeman has a 30-9 record since taking over the program ahead of the 2022 Fiesta Bowl following the departure of Brian Kelly to LSU.

“I am grateful for the support of the Board of Trustees, led by John Veihmeyer, President Fr. Bob Dowd, C.S.C., and Director of Athletics Pete Bevacqua,” Freeman said in a statement. “The investment they continue to pour into our program is invaluable to our student-athletes and staff. This commitment goes well beyond myself, as they are dedicated to ensuring all aspects of our program are competitive within the upper echelon of college football.”

Freeman led the Irish to an 11-1 record, a No. 5 ranking this season and the seventh seed with a first-round CFP matchup against tenth-seeded Indiana on tap for Friday night in South Bend. The winner will face No. 2 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.

Notre Dame opened the season with a big road win over Texas A&M, only to then suffer a shocking home loss to Northern Illinois. From there, Notre Dame rattled off 10 consecutive victories to put itself in position for a home first-round game in the College Football Playoff. It’s the third CFP appearance in Notre Dame history.

  • Bucs preparing for a Haugh-brawl in the trenches against Chargers

Bucs preparing for a Haugh-brawl in the trenches against Chargers

TAMPA — If you’re facing a team coached by Jim Harbaugh, you’d better attack the day with enthusiasm unknown to man.

That’s been the mantra of the Harbaughs — Jim with the Chargers and John as head coach of the Ravens since 2008 — inherited from their coaching father, Jack.

“He’s a great coach. A great leader,” said Bucs guard Ben Bredeson, who played for Harbaugh at Michigan. “I really enjoyed playing for him, and so did my brother (Max). They’re having a good year over there. He’s got a unique personality. Guys play for him, and I think he’s having some success back in the NFL.”

Harbaugh has forged a career as a turnaround specialist who’s had a shorter shelf life at programs than his record should demand.

In 2007, he took over a downtrodden Stanford program coming off a 1-11 season. In his fourth season, with Andrew Luck at quarterback, the Cardinal routed Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl.

Harbaugh then led the 49ers to three straight NFC Championship games from 2011-13 and lost Super Bowl 47 to his brother and the Ravens. A year later, he lost a power struggle with general manager Trent Baalke and was off to his alma mater at Michigan.

Last season, Harbaugh led the Wolverines to a national championship, then fled to the NFL, escaping before the NCAA penalized him for recruiting violations and other infractions.

Back in the NFL, Harbaugh has the Chargers at 8-5 and in wild-card contention with his physical, run-first mentality. Quarterback Justin Herbert is managing the offense with 14 touchdown passes and only one interception.

There’s no secret about what the Bucs will face against the Chargers. Harbaugh is going to run the football, melt the clock and bring a physical brawl to the Bucs.

“I think there’s a sense of urgency, for sure,” Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen said. “I…

  • 2024 Heisman Trophy odds, straw poll: Colorado star Travis Hunter emerges as clear winner of coveted award

2024 Heisman Trophy odds, straw poll: Colorado star Travis Hunter emerges as clear winner of coveted award

    Getty Images

It’s official as can be: Colorado’s Travis Hunter will be the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner.

That is the result of my annual straw poll of Heisman voters — who were granted anonymity in exchange for their ballots — conducted this week. Those ballots have room for three spots, and seven players received at least one vote in our straw poll.

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty was No. 2 followed by Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Four other players also received votes. Jeanty goes into the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal needing 132 yards to break Barry Sanders’ 36-year-old record for rushing yards in a season.

Gabriel, meanwhile, is coming off a season-high four touchdown passes against Penn State in the Big Ten Championship Game. The former UCF and Oklahoma QB was arguably the difference this season in the Ducks finishing the regular season as the nation’s only undefeated FBS team.

CBS Sports surveyed 29 Heisman voters. While that represents only 3% of the 928 total voters, the straw poll has correctly picked the Heisman winner across the last four seasons.

Hunter remains the favorite going into Saturday’s ceremony in New York to become the first true two-way player to win the Heisman since Notre Dame’s Paul Hornung in 1956.

Colorado’s superb cornerback/wide receiver averaged 119 players per game in two seasons with the Buffaloes. Twice he played more than 160 snaps in a game. Those numbers count special teams and penalties.

Hunter has already expressed his desire to play both ways in the NFL. The professionals prefer that players…

  • Inside North Carolina’s ‘fractured’ coaching search that ended with Bill Belichick

Inside North Carolina’s ‘fractured’ coaching search that ended with Bill Belichick

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham had a surprise for the man just hired to guide his football program.

In an ode to his new coach’s sleeveless hoodie fashion while in New England that spawned a nickname, Cunningham showed off a blazer with cut-off sleeves. It felt like Cunningham’s very public embrace of new UNC head coach Bill Belichick, who agreed to a 5-year, $50 million deal in a decision that stunned both the NFL and college football ranks.

Yet multiple sources told CBS Sports throughout the coaching search and in its aftermath that Belichick was not Cunningham’s preferred target. The UNC AD preferred to go younger after he fired 73-year old Mack Brown following a 44-33 record in six seasons in Chapel Hill. It was Brown’s second stint leading the UNC program after a successful run 1988-97 that included six bowl appearances.

And while the 72-year old Belichick is technically younger, the initial plan was to find someone akin to 34-year old Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham, who has orchestrated an incredible overhaul in two years in Tempe to guide the Sun Devils to the College Football Playoff this season. Cunningham initially zeroed in on Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell as his top two candidates, according to sources, and wanted to talk to both after their respective teams played in conference championship games last week.

In his initial public comments about the coaching search, Cunningham said “all the coaches we’re talking to right now are playing, and so they’re continuing to be in championship games or in the playoffs.”

How’d Belichick end up as the guy, then?

“It was a fractured search,” one source familiar with the search told CBS Sports. “No one was on the same…

  • UL football’s Kenneth Almendares wins 2024 Lou Groza Award

UL football’s Kenneth Almendares wins 2024 Lou Groza Award

The best kicker for the 2024 college football season hails from Cajun Country. At the 2024 College Football Awards show on Thursday, Louisiana football’s Kenneth Almendares won the 2024 Lou Groza Award, earning him the title of the best college football kicker in the nation.

All year long, the fifth-year senior kicker has been a weapon in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ back pocket as they knew when he took the field they would be coming away with some points. He finished the 2024 regular season making 27 out of 29 field goal attempts with his longest make coming from 53 yards out.

Along the way to near perfection, Almendares etched his name in UL history by breaking the school’s record for most career points scored by a kicker (362) and PATs (158) along with single-season records in field goals made and points. He finished the season on track to maintain a 90% average of makes, making it look easy on special teams.

He was recently named to The Athletic’s 2024 All-America football team, first-team Walter Camp All-America team and was named All-Sun Belt Conference first team. He also received weekly SBC honors throughout the season being named the West division special team’s Player of the Week four times this season.

Almendares is set to make his final appearance in for the Cajuns when they play in the Isleta New Mexico Bowl game vs TCU on Dec. 28.
