Indiana football tight end Brody Kosin enters transfer portal after redshirting in 2024

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football tight end Brody Kosin is entering the transfer portal after redshirting in 2024 as a true freshman.

Kosin announced his decision on Friday night.

“After a long conversation with my family I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal with 4 years of eligibility left, thank you to everyone at Indiana University who helped me out on and off the field,” Kosin posted, on X.

Kosin is one of just three scholarship players to leave the team during the winter portal window. His departure comes after IU added three players at the position in recent weeks as the staff looks to replace starting tight end Zach Horton.

The Hoosiers landed Andrew Barker and Blake Thiry on early signing day and recently got a commitment from Wisconsin transfer Riley Nowakowski.

Kosin was a holdover from the previous staff’s recruiting efforts. The 3-star recruit out of Clarkston High School in Michigan verbally committed to IU in April 2023. He had 20 scholarship offers including ones from Duke, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Texas and Wake Forest.

He reopened his recruitment after the school parted ways with Tom Allen, but stuck to his pledge after taking an official visit to the school and meeting the new staff.

  • Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi defends controversial field goal decision in 6OT bowl loss to Toledo

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi defends controversial field goal decision in 6OT bowl loss to Toledo

    USATSI

Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi defended his decision to kick a field goal during the Panthers’ 48-46 six-overtime loss to Toledo in Thursday’s GameAbove Sports Bowl. Trailing 40-37 in the second overtime, the Panthers faced fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Rather than attempt a game-winning touchdown, Narduzzi sent kicker Ben Sauls onto the field for an 18-yard try that forced a third extra period.

“Fourth-and-1, if you don’t get it, you lose the game,” Narduzzi told reporters after the game. “I don’t want it to end like that. I want our kids to make plays. I want to put it in the kids’ hands. For a coach to make a decision to win the game or lose the game, I am not for that.”

Once a game reaches a third overtime, college football rules dictate that teams trade 2-point conversion attempts until a winner is decided. Both teams converted in the next three overtimes, setting a bowl record for the most extra frames at six. Toledo quarterback Tucker Gleason connected with Junior Vandeross III to open the sixth overtime, and Pitt freshman quarterback Julian Dugger’s next pass fell incomplete, sealing the win for the Rockets.

Panthers starting quarterback Eli Holstein missed the game with a leg injury, and backup Nate Yarnell was no longer on the roster after entering the transfer portal. That left third-string redshirt freshman David Lynch to start. Lynch struggled, throwing two interceptions, which led to Dugger making his college debut in the second half. Dugger led the Panthers on two second-half scoring drives, turning a 20-12 deficit into a 30-20 lead.

On New Year’s Day, the Texas Longhorns will face Arizona State in Peach Bowl at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Sun Devils have flown under-the-radar this season, picking off one ranked opponent after another in the new look Big 12.

Led by second year head coach Kenny Dillingham and two transfers, running back Cam Skattebo and quarterback Sam Leavitt, the Sun Devils grabbed attention by upsetting Utah in October. ASU won its final six games of the season, taking down Oklahoma State, UCF, Kansas State, BYU, Arizona and Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game.

As one of the four highest ranked conference champions (beating out ACC champ Clemson), the Sun Devils got a bye in the first round of the college football playoffs and a berth into the quarterfinal game in the Peach Bowl.

While the Longhorns are a heavy 12.5 point favorite, Arizona State shouldn’t be overlooked by Texas. ASU’s dynamic offense has been tough for defenses to handle all season and the defense has been stout during the crucial part of the season.

    ASU History

Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Jake Plummer (16) in action during the 1993 season.

While no one would consider the Arizona State Sun Devils a “Blue Blood,” the program has had some success in the past. ASU is one of the largest universities in the nation and one of the schools that abandoned the Pac-12 for the Big 12.

ASU joined the Pac-10 in 1978 and won two conference titles in 1986 and 1996. John Cooper was there in the 80s, leading ASU to the Pac-10 title and the Rose Bowl, where they lost to Michigan. Cooper left after that season for Ohio State. In the 90s, Bruce Snyder guided the Sun Devils,…

  • Naughty, nice for each College Football Playoff team remaining in the bracket over Christmas

Naughty, nice for each College Football Playoff team remaining in the bracket over Christmas

It’s Christmas, and while I’m not Santa Claus, that will not stop me from making a list and checking it twice, all to find out who’s naughty or nice.

Eight teams remain in the College Football Playoff, and none are perfect. As far as fans are concerned, that’s a good thing. It leads to more uncertainty about how the final three rounds will play out, which is what every college football fan should want.

So think of this naughty and nice list as a way of describing why teams could win it all or what could cause them to come up short in their goal of winning the national championship.

    Nice: Balanced offense

Oregon is good at everything and can beat you in multiple ways. It runs the ball on 51.5% of its plays, which ranks 65th nationally but only sixth among the eight remaining teams (a reminder to run the dang ball). What matters more than how often the Ducks run is how effective they are at it. The offense ranks ninth nationally in EPA per dropback and 17th in EPA per rush. Even more impressive, they’re seventh in passing success rate and fourth in rushing success rate. As a whole, this offense isn’t super explosive, but it’s just so good at staying ahead of schedule and doing it on the ground and in the air.

    Naughty: The front seven

Listen, Oregon’s front seven, compared to almost every other team in the country, is phenomenal. However, compared to some of its playoff brethren, this isn’t an elite unit. While the overall numbers are outstanding, there are legitimate concerns. On the season, Oregon’s defense is…

The lone Alabama Crimson Tide player currently in the transfer portal yet to make a decision, running back Justice Haynes has now officially done so, as he announced a commitment to the Michigan Wolverines on Tuesday.

A sophomore, Haynes has spent each of the past two seasons in Tuscaloosa as a member of Alabama’s running back room where he has rushed for a total of 616 yards and nine touchdowns on 104 attempts. Haynes is also coming off a breakout 2024 season in which he rushed for 448 yards and seven touchdowns on 79 attempts, while also catching 17 passes for 99 yards.

Prior to Alabama, Haynes was one of the top names in the Crimson Tide’s 2023 recruiting class where the running back ranked as a five-star prospect out of Buford High School in Georgia.

As mentioned previously, with the commitment of Haynes to Michigan, the Crimson Tide’s entire group of players to enter the transfer portal so far this cycle have now made a decision as to where they will play in 2025.

The complete list of names and destinations can be found here.

  • College Football Playoff bracket predictions: Second-chance expert picks to crown 2025 national champion

College Football Playoff bracket predictions: Second-chance expert picks to crown 2025 national champion

The 2024-25 College Football Playoff bracket has entered its second phase. With the first round now in the books — and every betting favorite advancing to the quarterfinals — there are just seven games remaining to crown a national champion.

The action began Friday night with (7) Notre Dame winning 27-17 over (10) Indiana, a game nowhere near as close as the score indicated. (6) Penn State’s 38-10 victory over (11) SMU earlier Saturday was precisely as dominant as the score suggests, while (5) Texas looked ready to pull away from (12) Clemson only to fall back a bit in the second half before decisively prevailing 38-24. The nightcap saw (8) Ohio State cruise to a devastating 42-17 win over (9) Tennessee.

What’s still left to determine is which team is most likely to win the national title. Seven of our 11 experts below have (1) Oregon becoming the first 17-0 team in college football history. None of the other four remaining experts picked a team that received a first-round bye meaning they all expect a program to win four straight postseason games on the way to a national championship.

As for what’s coming next week, the Ducks rematch the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl, (2) Georgia takes on the Fighting Irish in the Sugar Bowl (they previously met there in 1981), (3) Boise State aims to fend off the surging Nittany Lions in the friendly confines of the Fiesta Bowl (Broncos won there in 2007, 2010, 2014), and (4) Arizona State meets the Longhorns in the Peach Bowl.

Will it be another clean sweep for the favorite, or might someone finally spring an upset in this edition of the CFP? With 134 FBS teams now whittled down to eight, all that’s left to do is take a second look at our picks. CBS Sports experts did exactly that below. We’ve spent…
