  • Utah’s coaches need more ‘disciplined eyes’ from the secondary – Deseret News

Utah’s coaches need more ‘disciplined eyes’ from the secondary – Deseret News

Through two games, what grade would Utah cornerbacks coach Sharrieff Shah give his group?

“If I had to grade us right now as a unit, it would be like a C-, and that’s being really gracious on the grades,” Shah said.

Contrary to Shah’s assessment, the stat sheet paints a favorable picture of Utah’s secondary, and defense as a whole. The Utes have allowed just 9.5 points per game (21st in the nation), 147 passing yards per game (32nd in the nation) and have intercepted three passes, including a pick-six by cornerback Jackson Bennee.

There’s been good plays — including Bennee’s pick-six against Cal Poly, which extended Utah’s interception-return-for-a-touchdown streak to an NCAA-record 22 seasons.

Yes, the competition was UCLA — which looks so far to be a lower-tier FBS team — and FCS Cal Poly, but when a team allows just one touchdown over its first two games, there’s definitely more good than bad happening in the secondary.

Bennee has stood out so far at nickel with his pick-six, plus another near interception and three pass breakups against Cal Poly. Smith Snowden has also done fairly well in coverage, even with the addition of being a significant contributor on offense on his plate.

When coaches turn on the tape, however, they see plenty that needs fixing in the secondary before Big 12 Conference play starts next Saturday against Texas Tech. For Utah’s defense to hit an elite level, however, coaches know that there are things to clean up.

Coverage breakdowns in the first two games didn’t lead to touchdowns or big gains, but against better opponents, they almost certainly would have.

A couple examples: On UCLA’s first drive of the game, former Ute Mikey Matthews was uncovered deep down the field and could have scored if he caught the pass from quarterback Nico Iamaleava, but Iamaleava’s…

Travis Kelce says he has ‘no excuse’ for collision that injured Xavier Worthy vs. Chargers: ‘Got to be better’

    Getty Images

Travis Kelce’s 2025 season didn’t get off to the start he wanted. The Chiefs fell to 0-1 on the year with a loss to the Chargers in Brazil and while the star tight end caught a touchdown in the loss, he also injured teammate Xavier Worthy in a big collision on a mesh concept over the middle of the field early in the game.

Worthy will miss some time with a dislocated shoulder due to the collision, and Kelce addressed the incident on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast on Wednesday, taking responsibility for not getting the right depth on his route and saying he “felt like shit” afterwards for injuring Worthy and taking a big part of the Chiefs’ game plan out of action.

“I’m supposed to be running my route at depth for Worthy. So, it’s frustrating for me. I was trying to kind of set up my guy to be able to get in position and it all just happened pretty quick,” Kelce said. “I just got to be better, man. I’m 13 years into the league. There’s no excuse for me running into my own guys like that and being able to play fast and help him out. Worthy had his guy beat and we’re out the gate and that game starts completely different. Instead, I’m not sure where he is exactly in terms of health-wise, but I’m hoping that we get him back as fast as possible because he means so much to this team.

College Football Power Ratings: Oregon climbs, Texas slides entering Week 3

“Past is prologue.”  It’s been more than 400 years since Shakespeare wrote that line in “The Tempest,” but it still rings true.

When it comes to the AP Top 25 or Coaches Poll, we all get frustrated when voters lean too heavily on last season and brush aside what we’ve actually seen on the field. Instead of throwing preseason expectations out the window, they treat them as gospel while dismissing early results as flukes.

Power ratings should be different. If opinion polls are reactive, power polls are predictive. They’re not about what has happened, but what’s most likely to happen next. And when it comes to forecasting the future, history is often the best guide. Teams — and humans — are predictable. They repeat patterns, just in slightly different ways.

That’s why a strong power rating must always bake in some history, but with the right balance of past and present. The deeper we go into the season, the more weight 2025 performances will carry. Last week brought little movement, but this week delivers plenty of change — and a clear top tier is starting to form. The top five are tightly packed, with a noticeable drop off behind them.

Our No. 1 stays put, but there’s a new No. 2. And in a reflection of the sport’s current balance of power, 10 of our top 12 teams hail from the SEC or Big Ten. The ACC has one. Then there’s Notre Dame.

  • Packers reach 1-year, $13.25 million extension with WR Christian Watson amid ACL recovery

Packers reach 1-year, $13.25 million extension with WR Christian Watson amid ACL recovery

Christian Watson’s contract uncertainty is now behind him.

Watson, who is currently recovering from a torn ACL, reached a one-year, $13.25 million contract extension with the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday night, his agent told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Watson had a career-high 620 yards and two touchdowns on 29 catches last season, his third with the Packers after they selected him with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State. He had a team-high 21.4 yards per catch, too.

Watson went down with a torn ACL in the team’s loss to the Chicago Bears in the final game of the regular season last year. He’s been recovering ever since, and started this season on the physically unable to perform list. It’s unclear when Watson will be able to take the field again, but the team is hopeful that he can make it back for a good chunk of the season this fall.

“It’s definitely tough. Anytime you have an injury like this, it’s definitely going to take its toll on you,” Watson said in August, via the Packers.

“But I’ve gone through a lot of adversity. Nothing like this, but I feel like I was calloused for it a little bit and I had the right mentality going into it and it’s been keeping that the whole way through.”

Watson was entering the final year of his initial four-year, $9.2 million deal with the team this fall, and would’ve had limited time on the field. Now with his extension, Watson will get another shot at a full contract year after his ACL injury before seeking a new long-term deal.

The Packers rolled over the Detroit Lions and grabbed a 27-13 win in their season-opener on Sunday. They’ll host the Washington Commanders next on Thursday night.

  • J.J. McCarthy makes NFL history while leading the Vikings to a shocking win over the Bears

J.J. McCarthy makes NFL history while leading the Vikings to a shocking win over the Bears

    Imagn Images

For a while, it appeared that the first ‘Monday Night Football’ game of the season would be remembered as a successful debut for new Bears coach Ben Johnson. But after a dramatic turn of events in the fourth quarter, we know that the contest will really be remembered for J.J. McCarthy’s record-setting NFL debut that included a come-from-behind, 27-24 win for the Vikings.

Trailing 17-6 after three quarters, McCarthy put on a show during the game’s final 15 minutes in becoming the first quarterback to score three fourth-quarter touchdowns in his NFL debut. He threw touchdown passes to Justin Jefferson and Aaron Jones before he found the end zone himself on a 14-yard run.

McCarthy also became the first Vikings quarterback to throw multiple touchdowns in his NFL debut since Vikings Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton did so way back in 1961. Ironically, Tarkenton’s performance also came in a win against the Bears in Week 1. Tarkenton’s big debut was a foreshadowing of what was to come, as he ended up playing 18 NFL seasons and retired as the league’s all-time career passing leader. Tarkenton’s career also included three NFC championships and a league MVP in 1975.

In addition to joining Tarkenton in the history books, McCarthy also became the first quarterback to overcome a fourth quarter deficit of at least 10 points since Hall of Famer Steve Young did it nearly 40 years ago. Unfortunately for Young, the Buccaneers’ come-from-behind win over the Lions that day would be his lone win that year as Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback. He would later go on to have a decorated career with the 49ers that included two league MVPs and a Super Bowl MVP.

While his performance was one for the history books, McCarthy,…

Mississippi State fined $500,000 for fans storming the field after beating No. 12 Arizona State

    Getty Images

Mississippi State picked up a big win for the program on Saturday evening when they downed then-No. 12 Arizona State in a 24-20 thriller in Starkville. It was the Bulldogs’ first win over a ranked opponent since the 2022 Egg Bowl when they beat Ole Miss when the Rebels were ranked No. 20 in the country, and the faithful in Starkville made sure to celebrate in kind.

Fans quickly rushed the field and tore down the goalposts in near record time, carrying them out into the Mississippi night, cowbells ringing all the while. It was a joyous scene in Starkville, which has been a rarity over the past two seasons as they’ve gone 7-17, and the school is probably not too upset to pay the $500,000 fine that arrived from the SEC on Monday.

Storming the field is an automatic fine of half a million from the SEC, with the money for a non-conference incident going to the conference’s post-graduate scholarship fund. Fans are allowed to celebrate on the field if a pre-approved plan is turned in that allows for the opposing team and officials to get off the field before hand, but after…

  • Sean Payton: Bo Nix hung in there, battled, had a gutsy performance

Sean Payton: Bo Nix hung in there, battled, had a gutsy performance

The Broncos came away with a Week 1 victory over the Titans on Sunday, but it wasn’t exactly easy.

Quarterback Bo Nix had an uneven performance, finishing the day 25-of-40 for 176 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble.

“Well we won, that’s the first thing,” head coach Sean Payton said of Nix’s performance. “I thought he hung in there. He battled. Made some critical plays first in the second half, and so obviously he’ll be disappointed with the turnovers, but it was a gutsy performance. It is pretty usual Week 1, a lot of different looks maybe that you hadn’t seen normally or scouted normally for relative to their coverages.

“Overall, his job is to lead us to score. I thought he played really well in the second half, and we won the game.”

Nix told reporters that his attitude about his play is a little different now that he’s in his second season.

“I think I’m tougher on myself now because you know better. I’ve had some experience, and I’ve had what not to do,” Nix said. “Every year of my career, I’ve thrown a pick, probably. As much as I’m going to try in the future, I’m probably going to throw one every year. Just have to limit them, and hopefully I’ll stay at two for a while.”

We’ll see how Nix and the Broncos respond when they play the Colts on the road next week.
