  • Malik Nabers: My job doesn’t change because QB does

Malik Nabers: My job doesn’t change because QB does

Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers has played with four different starting quarterbacks in his first 18 NFL games and the Giants will trot a fifth one out on the field against the Chargers this Sunday.

First-round pick Jaxson Dart will replace Russell Wilson in a move that head coach Brian Daboll hopes will save both his job and the team’s season. During a press conference on Wednesday, Nabers was asked about the process he goes through to adapt to a change in the person charged with throwing him the football and he said that not much changes for him as the Giants search for the right answer at quarterback.

“Process is, I’ve got a job to do,” Nabers said, via a transcript from the team. “My job is to run routes, catch the ball no matter who’s throwing me the football. Like I said, the decision wasn’t up to me. Like I said, I’ve still got a job to do, go play football.”

Nabers missed practice on Wednesday with a shoulder injury, but the session with reporters is a good sign that he will be well enough to be on the field to support Dart in his starting debut. That’s a plus for the rookie because Nabers also shared the one thing that all of the different quarterbacks the Giants have thrown into action have in common.

“They’re going to find a way to get No. 1 the ball,” Nabers said.

As the revolving door makes clear, there’s more to the job than that but it wouldn’t be a bad place for Nabers to start.

  • Iowa football ready for defensive challenges Indiana presents

Iowa football ready for defensive challenges Indiana presents

To put it rather bluntly, the Indiana Hoosiers are rolling on offense right now. They have scored 56, 73, and 63 points in their last three contests. The Iowa Hawkeyes have the chance to stifle this unit this Saturday inside what figures to be a hostile and raucous Kinnick Stadium.

What makes Indiana so tough to defend is how their offensive success can come from all over the field. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza is completing 76.8% of his passes for 975 yards and 14 touchdowns and has yet to toss an interception.

On the ground, Indiana has four running backs with at least 200 yards on the ground, and each of those backs averages 5.3 or more yards per carry.

Iowa is embracing the challenge, though, and Kirk Ferentz elaborated on how to slow down their potent attack.

“Where do you want to start? It’s hard to find a weakness. It really is. I’m not saying it’s like playing Ohio State, but there’s some similarities in my mind if you look at their offense. They have a big, physical offensive line, a couple newcomers there that have helped them. Right tackle, center, I’ll start right there. I think the other three guys were there last year, although I think one of them was a transfer as well, maybe, a year ago. But they’re a big, physical offensive line, two tight ends that are very effective and the one guy made the big play the other night with the long touchdown. Then those three receivers as a group — they’re all really good individually, but as a group, it kind of takes you back to Ohio State, where pick your poison. They had two first-rounders and another guy is pretty good.

“You’ve got that, and then in the backfield they have two really good running backs right now, and then the quarterback might be the best quarterback in the country. Somebody was saying he’s the leader for the Heisman. I don’t have a Heisman vote,…

  • NFL Week 4 picks: NFC South teams among best bets against the spread

NFL Week 4 picks: NFC South teams among best bets against the spread

Home underdogs heading into their bye week have been a reliable bet, posting a 32-17-2 record against the spread (ATS) since 2015, which translates to a winning percentage of 65.3%. These teams often play with added urgency, knowing they have extra time to regroup after the game. Many head coaches motivate their players by offering an extra day off if they win, and this added incentive is often overlooked in the betting line.

There is one such case for this in Week 4, as well as a couple other teams I think you should consider backing.

Here’s a look at my Week 4 ATS picks and how confident I am on a 1-5 scale. And click here to check out another notable NFL betting strategy at SportsLine.

    Week 4 ATS picks

    Falcons +2.5

    Confidence: 4

Atlanta’s most significant data point this week is that they are returning home following an ugly shutout loss. The Falcons were blanked 30-0 by the Carolina Panthers in Week 3, marking their first shutout since 2021 and their most lopsided defeat since 2015. Historically, teams that face such embarrassing losses tend to respond with better focus and effort the following week. Atlanta was playing their first game outdoors, which has always been a tough spot for the team.

The Washington Commanders face significant uncertainty at the quarterback position. Jayden Daniels suffered a knee sprain against Green Bay in Week 2 and was ruled out for Week 3. While there’s optimism about his Week 4 return, his status remains up in the air. The Commanders are dealing with multiple key injuries beyond Daniels. Terry McLaurin left Week 3 with a quad injury, while Austin Ekeler (Achilles) and Noah Brown (groin) remain out. Keep an eye on Daniels’ status. Once his status is official, the line could move 3 to 4 points in either direction.

College football predictions, odds, picks: Alabama vs. Georgia, Penn State vs. Oregon lead loaded Week 5

Anyone else ready for chaos in Week 5? We’re going to see mass changes reflected in Sunday’s new rankings once this epic slate of games inside the top 25 are over — and we’ve got final picks and predictions for all of them.

Alabama-Georgia highlights the schedule in a primetime SEC showdown, while Oregon-Penn State, LSU-Ole Miss, Ohio State-Washington represent a trio of matchups involving at least one elite team with College Football Playoff aspirations.

And beware of upsets this weekend. Florida State’s Friday night trip to Charlottesville to take on Virginia is one to watch in the ACC ahead of the Seminoles’ Oct. 4 battle against fellow unbeaten Miami.

Last week’s results: Brad Crawford (9-1 straight, 5-5 ATS); Chris Hummer (9-1, 4-6 ATS). I’m still angry over Oklahoma’s last-minute safety at Auburn to cover. The Tigers play on the road was the right pick, but it didn’t land. Taking Texas Tech on the moneyline was a good call for both of us, along with the Miami cover against Florida.

Season totals: Crawford (29-11 straight, 24-16 ATS); Hummer (32-8; 18-22).

No. 8 Florida State at Virginia

Hummer (Virginia +6.5): I really wish I could get this line at seven, which it’s already creeped to in several books. But I like the Cavs ATS in this matchup. Virginia’s O-line is a bit of a weakness after a series of injuries, but Chandler Morris and UVA’s offense are going to put up points regardless. The question I…

  • Tom Brady says critics of his role as NFL owner and broadcaster are ‘blinded by distrust’

Tom Brady says critics of his role as NFL owner and broadcaster are ‘blinded by distrust’

Tom Brady has said only the “paranoid and distrustful” doubt that he can work as both a broadcaster and team owner in the NFL.

Since he retired from playing, Brady has become a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and taken up a role as an analyst with Fox. As part of his broadcasting role, Brady has access to others teams’ players and coaches, an option unavailable to owners of other NFL teams. Some believe his dual role brings up a conflict of interest and gives Brady and, by extension, the Raiders an unfair advantage over other teams. The topic drew even more debate last week when Brady was seen in the Raiders’ coaching booth during the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The NFL said Brady did not break any rules.

In Wednesday’s edition of his weekly newsletter, Brady addressed the criticism.

“When you live through uncertain and untrusting times like we are today, it is very easy to watch a person’s passions and profession intersect, and to believe you’re looking at some sort of dilemma. Because when you’re blinded by distrust, it’s hard to see anything other than self-interest,” Brady wrote.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion added that he is aware of the ethics of his roles in retirement.

“I love football. At its core it is a game of principles. And with all the success it has given me, I feel I have a moral and ethical duty to the sport; which is why the point where my roles in it intersect is not actually a point of conflict, despite what the paranoid and distrustful might believe. Rather, it’s the place from which my ethical duty emerges: to grow, evolve, and improve the game that has given me everything,” he wrote.

On Sunday, Brady was in the Fox commentary booth for the Chicago Bears’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys. In the run-up to that game, Brady had access to coaches and players for the Bears, who…

  • Packers’ Micah Parsons on potentially sacking Dak Prescott in return to face Cowboys: ‘It’s going to be painful’

Packers’ Micah Parsons on potentially sacking Dak Prescott in return to face Cowboys: ‘It’s going to be painful’

Micah Parsons is not looking forward to having to sack Dak Prescott.

The Green Bay Packers pass rusher will make his return to Dallas on Sunday night to take on his former team for the first time since the Cowboys traded him away last month. That deal came after a tumultuous stretch of failed contract negotiations and a trade request.

The matchup will lead to the opportunity for Parsons to sack the Cowboys quarterback, his former teammate and friend. That’s not something he really wants to do.

“It’s going to be painful,” Parsons said about getting the chance to sack Prescott, via The Associated Press. “That’s my guy. He was always like a good mentor for me. But you know how it is, he always told me if I ever faced him that it’ll be a great matchup, so I’m excited to see what Sunday brings itself.”

Parsons dominated in Dallas while he was there. He was named to the Pro Bowl in all four seasons he spent in a Cowboys uniform while racking up at least 12 sacks a season. Parsons quickly became one of the best pass rushers in the league — which is what led to his issue with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over a potential contract extension.

Parsons was dealt to Green Bay ahead of Week 1 of the season. He has 1.5 sacks and three solo tackles so far this season with the Packers while helping them to a 2-1 start. The Packers signed him to a four-year, $188 million deal. That made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Though Sunday night marks his first trip back to Dallas since the trade went down, Jones isn’t going to honor him in any way. After all, it’s not like longtime running back Emmitt Smith’s return to Dallas after 13 seasons and three Super Bowl wins, he said.

“I don’t think that’s appropriate,” Jones said when asked if they would recognize Parsons’ return on Sunday. “Emmitt [Smith] was a different story. But that’s not to diminish Micah. I think…

  • Penn State’s defense, Jim Knowles impress Oregon’s Dan Lanning

Penn State’s defense, Jim Knowles impress Oregon’s Dan Lanning

Oregon squared off against defensive coordinator Jim Knowles twice last season when he was at Ohio State with mixed results.

Now Knowles is at Penn State after bolting the Buckeyes for a three-year contract worth more than $9 million.

Ducks coach Dan Lanning sees a lot of similarities between the 2024 Buckeyes and the third-ranked Nittany Lions, who meet Oregon Saturday night at 7:30 (TV-NBC) at Beaver Stadium.

“I’ve seen a lot of scheme variation, which he (Knowles) had at Ohio State,” Lanning said Monday night, “but it’s a lot of the similar scheme they carried at Ohio State.

“He always has a new wrinkle. Every week you see something new that you haven’t necessarily seen on film, that he’s able to pull from and that he thinks defends you well. That’s always going to present a good challenge.”

The Ducks rolled up 496 yards in a 32-31 victory over Ohio State last September, when Knowles was with the Buckeyes. The script flipped three months later in the Rose Bowl, where Ohio State held Oregon to 276 yards in a 41-21 rout in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

With Knowles guiding the defense, Penn State has held Nevada, Florida International and Villanova to 17 points, including 14 that came in the final seconds in two games. The Lions’ first-team defense has not allowed a touchdown.

“I’ve said it before, but defensively they’re as multiple and disruptive as anybody we’ll play,” Lanning said. “They have great edge play and good play in the back end as well.”

Lanning has a superb 39-6 record in his fourth season at Oregon after serving as Georgia’s defensive coordinator from 2019-22.

He guided the Ducks to an 11-0 regular season last year and a 45-37 victory over Penn State in the Big Ten championship game before the loss to Ohio State. He’s very familiar with the…
