Nail salon joke among Tennessee staff members blew lid off Jeremy Pruitt NCAA recruiting case

It wasn’t immediately clear almost three years ago that Jeremy Pruitt’s Tennessee football staff had committed numerous NCAA violations until an inside joke among coaches alerted investigators, documents reveal.

A student worker in the UT football program joked that assistant coach Brian Niedermeyer couldn’t take a pay cut during the COVID-19 pandemic because he needed to pay for nail salon visits for recruits and their families.

Knox News obtained the report of UT’s internal investigation through an open records request. It reveals the events that blew open the case, which led to Pruitt being fired for cause and now receiving a six-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA, which was announced Friday.

Seven UT football assistants and staff member also received show-cause penalties. A show-cause penalty means a university cannot hire a coach or recruiter without NCAA approval during the length of the ban. Pruitt’s show-cause includes a 100% suspension for the first year of employment should an NCAA school hire in him in any athletics position.

UT football was put on five years of probation, including 28 scholarship cuts, recruiting restrictions, vacated wins and a large fine. But it did not get a postseason ban.

On Nov. 13, 2020, UT Chancellor Donde Plowman’s office received a tip from an athletics department staff member. That person said they overheard members of the football program claim that some players were being “paid.”

UT alerted the NCAA and opened an internal investigation. Six days later, the university hired Bond, Schoeneck and King, a law firm specializing in NCAA infractions cases, to investigate further.

That much has been known since January 2021, when Plowman announced the probe and Pruitt’s firing. But the BSK firm’s report reveals where the case took a turn.

  • Panthers ‘have made an offer’ to Brian Burns, says team reporter

Panthers ‘have made an offer’ to Brian Burns, says team reporter

Conversations between the Carolina Panthers and Brian Buns have been had and, apparently, an offer has been made.

In Friday’s edition of his “Ask The Old Guy” mailbag column, Darin Gantt of Panthers.com was asked about the latest update regarding a possible contract extension for the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher. Here was Gantt’s response:

Not a lot to update, but that might not be the case for long. The Panthers have made an offer, but the entire market at the position seems to be on hold since there are a couple of big deals on the horizon.

The holdup likely comes courtesy of San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa. Bosa, who’s fresh off laying claim to the AP Defensive Player of the Year honors, will reset the market once he agrees to his inevitable mega deal.

As for his fellow 2019 first-rounder, Gantt added that an agreement for Burns could be reached soon:

Things could start shaking in the coming days as teams get ready to go to camp. Ideally, something would get done before they report and take the practice field. The Jets just did a deal with fellow 2019 first-rounder Quinnen Williams on Thursday, so maybe that breaks the seal.

Regardless, Burns is under contract for this season, and they can franchise tag him next year if they can’t get a deal done, though that’s something both sides would rather avoid.

Carolina’s veterans are set to report to Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. on Tuesday, July 25. So the new No. 0 could be welcoming in plenty of other new numbers in less than two weeks.

Northwestern elevates David Braun to interim coach for 2023 in wake of Pat Fitzgerald’s firing, per report

    Getty Images

Northwestern will promote defensive coordinator David Braun to serve as interim head football coach for the 2023 season, according to ESPN. Braun was hired by Northwestern to serve as defensive coordinator in January, but will now be assuming the role of interim head coach in the wake of the school firing Pat Fitzgerald earlier this week.

The school fired Fitzgerald amid a hazing scandal that rocked the university as a plethora of former Northwestern players pointed out culture issues within the program. Northwestern initially handed down a two-week suspension to Fitzgerald to be served immediately, but as more allegations came to light, the school ultimately decided to part ways with the longtime football coach.

“The decision comes after a difficult and complex evaluation of my original discipline decision imposed last week on Coach Fitzgerald for his failure to know and prevent significant hazing in the football program,” Northwestern president Michael Schill said in a statement this week. “Over the last 72 hours, I have spent a great deal of time in thought and in discussions with people who love our University — the Chair and members of our Board of Trustees, faculty leadership, students, alumni and Coach Fitzgerald himself. I have also received many phone calls, text messages and emails from those I know, and those I don’t, sharing their thoughts. While I am appreciative of the feedback and considered it in my decision-making, ultimately, the decision to originally suspend Coach Fitzgerald…

Kyler Murray says Cardinals’ tumultuous 2022 season ‘happened for a reason’ and ‘good will come out of’ it

    USATSI

The Arizona Cardinals are a team in transition. They’ve just gone through an offseason where they cleaned house by firing head coach Kliff Kingsbury and watched as general manager Steve Keim stepped down due to health reasons. Now, they’re slated to begin the 2023 season with a first-time head coach (Jonathan Gannon) and GM (Monti Ossenfort). On top of that, their franchise quarterback, Kyler Murray, is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered late last season.

Murray has largely been silent on the injury, but recently told the organization’s “Flight Plan” podcast that he’s hoping to turn it into something productive.

“It’s got to be a positive. There really is no option for it to be a negative,” Murray said, via the team’s official website. “I feel you get your little grace period right after it happens, dwell on it, soak in it, let the feelings take over. After that, (expletive), we gotta go. Life doesn’t stop. The job doesn’t stop. And I’m not going to stop.”

  • Brett Yormark pleased with the Big 12’s progress in 1st year as commissioner

Brett Yormark pleased with the Big 12’s progress in 1st year as commissioner

Jul. 12—MORGANTOWN — Closing in on his one-year anniversary of becoming Big 12 commissioner, Brett Yormark spoke at Big 12 media days Wednesday about what he accomplished in his first year at the head of the conference.

“It’s hard to imagine that one year ago I stood before you for the first time, ” Yormark said. “As many of you know, when I took this job I did not have a background in college athletics. I relied on the advice and guidance of many people who helped coach me through my first year and heading into year two, I still have much to learn.”

Yormark, who came to the Big 12 from entertainment agency Roc Nation, stood at Big 12 media day last year and proclaimed that the conference was “open for business “. In the 12 months since his introduction, Yormark believes the conference has delivered on that proclamation.

“Since then we’ve jumped ahead of the line and extended TV agreements with existing partners through 2031, creating tremendous stability and clarity for this conference, ” he said. “We accelerated Texas and OU’s withdrawal, which was a win-win for all parties.”

Just three months after Yormark was introduced, the Big 12 announced a new media rights agreement with ESPN and Fox Sports. The conference also negotiated Texas and Oklahoma’s exit from the league to the SEC in 2024 and added four new teams, Central Florida, Houston, BYU and Cincinnati.

“This event kicks off our first-ever season as a 14-team league, ” Yormark said. “We plan to use this season to celebrate the incredible strength we have going forward with our eight continuing members, our four incoming members and also to celebrate the impact that Texas and Oklahoma have had on this conference since day one.”

Asked about the impact that the exit of Texas and Oklahoma, the conference’s two biggest brands, will have, Yormark downplayed it’s…

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wins ‘Best NFL Player’ at 2023 ESPY Awards

The Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes are guaranteed to leave Los Angeles as winners tonight.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Mahomes has already secured the victory for “Best NFL Player” at tonight’s ESPY Awards, with the announcement taking place during the network’s afternoon studio show “NFL Live.”

The win is one of the three dominoes on the line tonight for the Chiefs as they will have to wait for the live show to see if they will also take home ‘Best Team’ and Mahomes for ‘Athlete of the Year.’ Mahomes led the NFL in yards (5,250), touchdowns (41) and touchdown percentage (6.3%) in 2022, winning his second league MVP and Super Bowl MVP while leading the Chiefs to their second Lombardi Trophy in four years.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was announced earlier this week as a presenter on tonight’s show and could be there to help celebrate another ESPY victory in the process. Mahomes is also expected to attend, possibly accepting the other award for “Athlete of the Year.”

The ESPY Awards, presented by Capitol One and benefiting the V Foundation, will broadcast tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT on ABC.

Northwestern fires Pat Fitzgerald: Wildcats coach out amid hazing scandal as cultural issues exposed

Northwestern has fired coach Pat Fitzgerald days after details surfaced alleging graphic instances of hazing within the program, the school announced Monday night. Fitzgerald’s departure comes three days after he was initially suspended without pay for two weeks. However, university administrators opted to revisit his status with the program after two former players provided details of the hazing, which was sexual in nature, to The Daily Northwestern student newspaper. Defensive coordinator David Braun is expected to step in as a liaison managing the team before an interim coach is named, according to multiple reports.

An executive summary provided by Northwestern recapped an independent investigation that concluded there was not sufficient evidence to believe the Northwestern coaching staff knew about the hazing. Fitzgerald, who has served as head coach of his alma mater for 17 seasons, claimed that he was “not aware of the alleged incidents.” However, as further details came to light through the weekend, university president Michael Schill announced Sunday night that he would reassess the penalty.

Less than 24 hours later as even more details of alleged hazing surfaced, Schill dismissed Fitzgerald.

“The decision comes after a difficult and complex evaluation of my original discipline decision imposed last week on Coach Fitzgerald for his failure to know and prevent significant hazing in the football program,” said Schill in a statement. “Over the last 72 hours, I have spent a great deal of time in thought and in discussions with people who love our University — the Chair and members of our Board of Trustees, faculty leadership, students, alumni and Coach Fitzgerald himself. • Ranking five AFC quarterbacks under the most pressure in 2023: Aaron Rodgers looking to end long Jets drought

Ranking five AFC quarterbacks under the most pressure in 2023: Aaron Rodgers looking to end long Jets drought

The AFC has been established as the dominant conference, and a big reason why is because of the quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen are the three favorites to win MVP, Lamar Jackson became the highest-paid player in NFL history this offseason and the conference has a couple of rookies to keep an eye on like C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson.

It will be tough to make the playoffs in the loaded AFC this season, and some of these quarterbacks are under more pressure than others. Below, we will break down five AFC signal-callers that are under the most pressure in 2023 — for one reason or another.

The world was split on Tua entering 2022. Even after a career year, you can’t definitively say everyone is sold on him being the guy moving forward in Miami. The Dolphins appear to be, however, as they picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Last year, Tagovailoa became the first Dolphins quarterback to lead the NFL in passer rating since Dan Marino did so in 1984. Miami averaged 6.5 yards per play with Tagovailoa as the starter, which were the most by any starting quarterback in the league last season (min. 10 starts). Yes, even more than Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. So why is Tagovailoa under pressure in 2023? Well, as head coach Mike McDaniel so eloquently put it at the NFL Combine, last year he had to convince everyone Tagovailoa was good. Now, he has to convince everyone he’s healthy.
