Pac-12 commish presents potential TV deal to school leaders with no agreement being reached, per reports

    USATSI

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff presented details for a potential media rights deal to leaders from member institutions at a meeting on Tuesday, though ultimately no agreement was reached, according to multiple reports. Another meeting is planned soon with both sides remaining hopeful a deal can be reached.

According to ESPN, the proposed deal was streaming-centric through Apple and would incentivize tiers with an upside if certain subscription numbers are met. The agreement would start in 2024-25 and begin with a relatively low payout relative to what league members had hoped. Compensation would incrementally improve, with high-end estimates that would be competitive with the Big 12 and ACC in the future.

The formal presentation came five days after Colorado abruptly announced its intentions to head back to its former home in the Big 12 amid the uncertainty surrounding the league and its media rights future. The Pac-12 authorized Kliavkoff to begin negotiations for a new television contract in June 2022 after USC and UCLA announced plans to join the Big Ten in July 2024. Despite more than a year passing, the league has yet to present firm numbers for a television contract to its remaining member schools, until reportedly on Tuesday.

Various people in or around the Pac-12 have claimed for months that a deal would be imminent. Arizona State president Michael Crow told The State Press that the league was in the final stages of negotiations in March. The Athletic, meanwhile, reported that a deal could…

  • Steelers sign former XFL running back John Lovett

Steelers sign former XFL running back John Lovett

On Monday, XFL Media Relations posted that former XFL running back John Lovett had agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lovett played for the Vegas Vipers.

Lovett played his college football at Princeton where he was a quarterback, running back and wide receiver during his career. In the NFL he’s settled in as more of a fullback/tight end type and at 6-foot-2 and 236 pounds, looks the part.

When the news of Lovett being signed first came out, the first thought was he was coming in to replace running back Alfonzo Graham. Graham went down in training camp with a torn labrum. But Lovett is likely the replacement for Monte Pottenbaum who chose to retire last week.

  • Caden Brown recaps Rutgers visit on Saturday, gives timetable on his decision

Caden Brown recaps Rutgers visit on Saturday, gives timetable on his decision

Things continue to trend in a positive direction for Rutgers football and Caden Brown this weekend, with the New York three-star back on-campus over the weekend.

Brown took an unofficial visit on Saturday to Rutgers football, joining a dozen committed players on-campus for a day of learning more about the program. He was the only player in the group who was not a Rutgers football commit.

A 6-foot-3, 205-pound defensive lineman from Erasmus Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Brown is a class of 2024 recruit who is ranked a three-star by ever prominent recruiting service. He is a consensus a top-five player in New York.

He has a strong offer list that includes Boston College, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Washington in addition to Rutgers.

“The visit was great. We had…a chance to experience what a full workday would be like as a Rutgers football player.,” Brown told Rutgers Wire over the weekend.

“What stood out was learning some new pass-rushing techniques from coach Watson (defensive line coach Marquise Watson) and the d-line staff.”

In May, he cut down his recruitment to a final four of Maryland, Michigan State and Penn State and Rutgers.

For now, Brown continues along with his recruitment, although he did recently claim that the school is his top program.

“The relationship with Rutgers is strong. I definitely understand what is expected from me as a D1, Power Five athlete and more specifically a Rutgers football player,” Brown said.

“I’m embracing the challenge and I feel I will be ready soon.”

Rutgers is currently doing well in New York, landing four-star K.J. Duff and three-star defensive lineman Aaris Bethea, who is a teammate of Brown’s at Erasmus Hall.

As for a timetable for his own decision, Brown said things are progressing nicely in his recruitment and that a decision…

  • Steelers training camp Day 4 observations: Kenny Pickett caps off first week with strong outing

Steelers training camp Day 4 observations: Kenny Pickett caps off first week with strong outing

    Getty Images

LATROBE, Pennsylvania — Steelers fans who crammed into Chuck Noll Field on Sunday were treated to the best of the four practices during Pittsburgh’s first week of training camp. It was also the best practice so far for Kenny Pickett, who is expected to take a significant jump during his first full season as the team’s starting quarterback.

Pickett was on the money early. After not being able to connect with Pat Freiermuth on the first play of Seven Shots (a seven-play drill between the offense and defense from the two-yard-line), Pickett hit George Pickens for a wide open touchdown (there appeared to be a miscommunication on the play between Joey Porter Jr. and Chandon Sullivan) to tie things up. The offense took the lead one play later when Pickett hit tight end Zach Gentry on the far side.

Pickett continued to look for his tight ends on the following play. He and Freiermuth hooked up for a score — against the second-team defense — as the offense took a commanding 3-1 lead. The defense, though, came back to win the drill after Pickett exited following his touchdown pass to Freiermuth.

The sun — which beat down on the field throughout practice — continued to shine on Pickett and the starting offense during the next phase of practice. Pickett evaded pressure before hitting Diontae Johnson, who then displayed some nifty running after the catch. Moments later, Pickett unleashed a wicked pump that was bought hook, line and sinker by rookie cornerback Cory Trice Jr., who was guarding Pickens on the near side. The pump fake led to an easy completion.

Pickett wasn’t done testing Trice, who one day earlier came up with two big plays to…

  • Auburn football recruiting: Hugh Freeze flips five-star WR Perry Thompson from rival Alabama

Auburn football recruiting: Hugh Freeze flips five-star WR Perry Thompson from rival Alabama

    247Sports

Five-star wide receiver Perry Thompson flipped his commitment to Auburn Saturday afternoon, spurning Alabama — the Tigers’ biggest rival — in the process. Thompson, who committed to the Crimson Tide more than a year ago, announced his latest decision while on a visit to Auburn’s “Big Cat Weekend” recruiting event.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound Thompson is the highest-ranked commit in Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class. Though he wasn’t offered a scholarship under Bryan Harsin’s staff, Freeze and his group rectified that quickly in January. It took the Tigers six months to convince Thompson to jump ship from Alabama.

Freeze joined Thompson on a live Instagram broadcast put on by Auburn players and other commits.

A product of Foley, Alabama, Thompson ranks as the No. 14 prospect nationally and No. 4 wide receiver, according to 247Sports. He took official visits to both Auburn and Alabama in the month of June, with his latest visit to The Plains being an unofficial.

“Really the coaches building a bond with me and making me feel like family,” Thompson told Auburn Undercover after his official visit. “Everything on campus just feels like home, it feels good. Oh yeah, we built a strong bond. Every day I come up to campus we can just connect and there’s a strong relationship there.”

Thompson had more than 1,000 yards receiving and hauled in nine touchdowns as a junior at Foley.

“Physical prospect on the offensive side of the ball that understands how to utilize his frame and play strength as a pass…

  • Why Cowboys’ Jerry Jones won’t pay Zack Martin: ‘We need the money to pay (Micah) Parsons’

Why Cowboys’ Jerry Jones won’t pay Zack Martin: ‘We need the money to pay (Micah) Parsons’

If Zack Martin was hoping the Dallas Cowboys would alter his contract, Jerry Jones may have put those dreams into despair. Speaking to reporters at training camp in Oxnard, Calif., on Saturday, Jones admitted he can’t pay everyone on the roster.

Jones hinted Martin likely won’t get his contract altered because there are younger stars who Dallas has to pay — namely Micah Parsons.

“It’s not about precedent. It’s about facts,” Jones said Saturday, via ESPN. “We need the money to pay (Micah) Parsons. We need the money to pay the players that we got to pay in the future. It’s a fact. It’s not even a philosophy. It’s just a fact.

“Those dollars are there and we have this at this level, and if you redid all the contracts, then you never could put a roster together.”

As for what Martin can do about the situation moving forward, Jones seems to be holding all the cards. “Nothing. He’ll come to camp when he comes to camp,” Jones said, via The Athletic. “There’s no resolution. There are a lot of consequences if he doesn’t. … He’s been at the top of the money all the way through, drafted high and got a lot of money, got a lot of money over the years. It’s just hard to get it all. The bottom line is, nothing needs to happen.”

Martin has two years left on his current deal and has a cap number of $11.04 million this year, which increases to $23.34 million in 2024. The deal isn’t exactly cap friendly for the Cowboys, while Martin continues to hold out of camp hoping for a reworked deal. Martin has missed five days of practice and owes the Cowboys $250,000 in fines ($50,000 per day).

With an average annual salary of $14 million per year, Martin is the fourth-highest-paid right guard in the NFL. He has outperformed his deal.

Martin earned another First Team All-Pro selection in 2022, the sixth of his career and eighth All-Pro selection in nine seasons (made All-Pro every season…
