Fantasy Football Conference Championship Weekend: DFS building blocks, values and a star to fade

Whether you’ve played Daily Fantasy on Yahoo before or are giving it a try for the first time, this weekly column will take a look at the DFS landscape, revealing whom I like building lineups around, stars to fade, undervalued plays and bargain bin options to help you construct a better team.

    Lineup building blocks

Christian McCaffrey ($42) vs. Detroit Lions

McCaffrey turned 29 opportunities into 128 yards from scrimmage and two scores last week despite San Francisco playing through an uncharacteristic negative game script. He now gets a tough Detroit run defense that’s allowed the fewest schedule-adjusted fantasy points to running backs over the last five weeks. Still, it’s difficult to fade CMC in DFS in a week with so few alternatives.

McCaffrey has scored 23 touchdowns over 17 games this season, and the 49ers are touchdown favorites with easily the highest implied team total (29 points) this week. CMC’s high salary is worth paying up for during the Championship Round.

Lamar Jackson ($39) vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City’s defense has been incredibly stingy when healthy this season, but Jackson can overcome any matchup right now (and the Chiefs lost two defensive starters during last week’s game). He got 9.3 YPA at home during the regular season and ran for 100+ yards and two touchdowns the last time these teams met. Jackson is also the lone remaining dual-threat quarterback in the playoffs.

    Amon-Ra St. Brown ($34) @ San Francisco 49ers

The Lions will likely attempt to establish the run, but San Francisco’s opponents managed the fewest carries in the league this season (and had the third-most pass attempts). Jared Goff is better indoors, but St. Brown averaged a healthy 86.1 receiving yards and scored seven of his 10 touchdowns on the road this season. The 49ers can struggle against the slot, where Sun God runs more than 50% of his routes. St. Brown is a strong DFS option in a matchup with the Lions touchdown underdogs and in favorable weather.

⚡ Good morning to everyone but especially …

JIM HARBAUGH AND THE LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Jim Harbaugh is back in the NFL, and the Chargers — who have found every way imaginable to lose — have a guy who wins everywhere he goes. Los Angeles signed Harbaugh to a five-year contract, ending a will-he-won’t-he NFL sweepstakes/saga that spanned several years.

There are lots of ramifications, but let’s begin here: This is a huge win for the Chargers. Harbaugh isn’t for everyone, and his schtick can wear thin, but the results speak for themselves.

2015-23 with Michigan: 89-25, three College Football Playoff appearances, 2023 national champion2011-14 with 49ers: 44-19-1, three playoff appearances, one Super Bowl appearance; second-best winning percentage (min. 50 games) since the 1970 merger2007-10 with Stanford: 29-21, inherited a 1-11 team, but led the Cardinal…..

Grades for 2024 NFL head coaching hires: Chargers get ‘A’ for Jim Harbaugh swing, Panthers bank on upside

The NFL playoffs are fast approaching their anticipated finale, with Super Bowl LVIII just around the corner. In the meantime, the 2024 coaching cycle is in full swing, with close to a half-dozen teams already naming new head coaches and several still in search of a top candidate. In the end, more than 20% of the league will enter the new season with fresh leaders on the sideline.

It’s impossible to know which of this year’s hires will actually pan out. Some years, the least-celebrated promotion ultimately has the last laugh. Just as in free agency, big names don’t always translate to big results. This is a team game, remember, and that means coaches, like quarterbacks, are often affected by the staff and supporting cast around them.

But how do the hires register right now? Here’s our best attempt to grade each of the head coaching additions:

We’ve seen big-name hires from the college ranks flounder before (see: Urban Meyer, Matt Rhule, Chip Kelly), but the difference is, Harbaugh’s been an undisputed winner everywhere he’s coached, and that includes the NFL. One win away from a Super Bowl title with the 49ers back in 2012, now he’s back on the West Coast with a franchise quarterback and playoff-caliber roster already in place, guiding the team he once played for in the ’90s. It’s a perfect match, pairing a talented but sometimes-sheepish contender with a rugged program-builder who knows how to dial up splashy offense. The AFC West is interesting again.

  • Auburn is one of 4-star RB Akylin Dear’s ‘favorite offers’

Auburn is one of 4-star RB Akylin Dear’s ‘favorite offers’

Auburn has a major need at running back in the 2025 recruiting cycle and one of their top targets is four-star prospect Akylin Dear. Head coach Hugh Freeze and new offensive coordinator and running backs coach Derrick Nix visited the Quitman, Mississippi, product on Tuesday.

It was a big visit for Dear, who told On3’s Cole Pinkston that it “went great.”

“Actually, Auburn is one of my favorite offers I have,” he added. “Growing up, they were my favorite team. It went great, Auburn is recruiting me hard.”

The Tigers are not the only school pursuing the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder with Florida, Alabama, USC, Florida State, and others visiting him recently. While they have competition, Dear admitted that the Tigers are in a great spot to land the talented tailback.

“They’re in my top for sure,” Dear said. “I don’t want to say where, but just know, yes sir.”

Dear is the No. 148 overall player and No. 10 running back in the On3 industry ranking. He is also the No. 4 player from Mississippi.

  • The Funnel Defense Report: Championship Week

The Funnel Defense Report: Championship Week

Cincinnati Bengals v Kansas City Chiefs

Below is a look at the league’s most extreme run funnel and pass funnel defenses through the Divisional Round — teams being consistently attacked on the ground or through the air regardless of game script.

Having an understanding of which defenses are being bludgeoned via the rush or pass should help us identify matchups that may be better than we think in Super Wild Card Weekend DFS contests and other fantasy formats.

Not every game, of course, features a clearcut run or pass funnel defense. I’ve broken down both of this weekend’s games, even if there are no trends in how a defense is being attacked. My hope is to provide a basis from which you can make your all-important lineups decisions in this condensed slate.

And please remember at all times: The process.

    49ers vs. Lions

We have a classic pass funnel vs. pass funnel matchup here. Detroit and San Francisco, however, are pass funnels for two very different reasons.

Teams have leaned hard on the pass against the 49ers because Kyle Shanahan’s hyper-efficient offense has poured on the points and forced opponents to abandon the rush in the second half. No team saw a higher pass rate over expected against them than the 49ers during the regular season. San Francisco opponents had a 62 percent neutral pass rate this year, the second highest rate in the league.

This has largely covered for a Niners defense that can be had on the ground; we saw as much in the Divisional Round when Aaron Jones had 108 yards on 18 carries, with an obscene 5.2 yards after contact per rush. The Packers posted a lofty 50 percent rushing success rate against the 49ers.

The Lions, on the other hand, have been mercilessly attacked via the pass because they’re quite bad at defending the pass. This is analytics. Teams passed at a 61 percent rate against Detroit in neutral situations in 2023; only seven teams saw a higher neutral pass rate against them. From Week 13 to Week 18, Detroit faced the NFL’s…

  • Chargers hire Jim Harbaugh: Michigan president, athletic director offer cordial farewell to former coach

Chargers hire Jim Harbaugh: Michigan president, athletic director offer cordial farewell to former coach

    USATSI

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel wasn’t caught off guard when the Los Angeles Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday. In fact, Manuel said Harbaugh has always been, “extremely upfront with his communication regarding NFL opportunities.” Harbaugh’s return to the NFL came less than three weeks after he led the Wolverines to the program’s first national title since 1997.

“We had a great conversation tonight when he informed me of this decision to return to the NFL and offered his assistance in helping identify the needs for the program moving forward,” Manuel said.

While it appears there are no hard feelings, Manuel made it clear the university was aggressive in attempting to keep Harbaugh. Michigan was even willing to grant its coach immunity from termination for the two ongoing NCAA investigations into the program, according to 247Sports’ Sam Webb.

“We have been discussing a new contract that would make Jim the highest paid coach in college football,” Manuel said. “In the end, he wanted to explore and ultimately decided to pursue a return to coaching in the NFL. We can’t thank Jim enough for all that he has done for our student-athletes, staff and Michigan Football. He will always be a huge part of our rich history, and will be remembered as an all-time great Wolverine, as both a championship player and coach.”

Harbaugh posted an 86-25 (60-17 Big Ten) record. The former Wolverines quarterback led his alma mater to a 37-3 (26-1) record with three Big Ten titles and three wins over rival Ohio State in the last three seasons. He also leaves behind the two NCAA…

  • Troy Aikman says he’s ‘pretty shocked’ by Cowboys first-round playoff exit; still believes in Dak Prescott

Troy Aikman says he’s ‘pretty shocked’ by Cowboys first-round playoff exit; still believes in Dak Prescott

For the most part, Troy Aikman and the Dallas Cowboys delivered in big moments during their 1990s dynasty that produced three world championships in a four-year span.

For whatever reason, the Cowboys have gone the polar opposite way since winning their last title in January of 1996. The franchise seems to always come up short when it matters most, a fact that Aikman recently acknowledged following Dallas’ season-ending loss to the Green Bay Packers on Super Wild Card Weekend.

“Pretty shocked,” Aikman said of the Cowboys’ early playoff exit, via The Athletic. “I really liked this team all year long. I thought they were really talented. … It’s just the same old story, and I don’t mean that as a criticism. It’s just when I’m asked about the Cowboys as to why they have struggled, they’ve put together some really great regular seasons.

“They just have not, for whatever reasons, played their best football when the games matter most. That’s what you have to do. That’s the key to winning in the postseason and then getting to the Super Bowl. What the answer is to that, I’m not sure.”

Aikman may not have the answer, but he’s probably hoping that someone within the Cowboys’ organization does.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones clearly feels that a head coaching change at this juncture is not the answer. Jones decided to keep Mike McCarthy on as head coach despite the Cowboys’ second early playoff exit in three years under McCarthy, who has one year left on his current contract.

  • Here’s where Kansas football has landed in some way-too-early top 25 polls for 2024

Here’s where Kansas football has landed in some way-too-early top 25 polls for 2024

LAWRENCE — Kansas football’s 2023 season saw the Jayhawks compile what at the very least was the program’s best campaign in more than a decade.

In the third year of the coach Lance Leipold era, Kansas went 9-4 overall and 5-4 against the Big 12 Conference. That’s the most wins, overall and in conference play, for the team since the 2007 season. And after the Jayhawks captured a Guaranteed Rate Bowl victory against UNLV, they wound up finishing No. 23 in the top 25 of the US LBM Coaches Poll.

But while it’s still only January of 2024, with the status of rosters still very much in flux across the college landscape, that doesn’t mean it’s too early for some to start to project where teams will rank in the first top 25 of the 2024 season. It doesn’t mean it’s too early for Kansas fans to generate excitement for what their Jayhawks could accomplish in a new-look Big 12. And it appears there’s a lot of belief in what Kansas is capable of accomplishing in year four with Leipold.

    Here’s a look at five way-too-early projections for next season’s top 25:

Kansas isn’t the top-ranked Big 12 team in this prediction. Kansas State (No. 21), Oklahoma State (No. 18), Utah (No. 13) and Arizona (No. 9) all come in ahead of the Jayhawks. But it’s an indication of how Leipold and company are being viewed nationally.

This prediction actually has Kansas ahead of a couple of Big 12 foes in Kansas State (No. 22) and Oklahoma State (No. 23). Utah (No. 12) and Arizona (No. 10) still come in ahead of the Jayhawks. Kansas’ schedule also looks pretty favorable, at least at this point, which should help the Jayhawks be in position to maintain a top 25 status.

Kansas is once again viewed as a top 25 program here, albeit still at the tail end of the ranking. However, considering the extent of the rebuild Leipold and his…
