After much ado, the Washington Commanders have found their new head coach, on Thursday reaching a verbal agreement with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, as CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones reports.

Washington had targeted several up-and-coming coaches in its search to replace Ron Rivera, who was dismissed following the 2023 season, with assistants like Ben Johnson and Bobby Slowik drawing interviews. In the end, new Commanders brass apparently opted for experience with Quinn, 53, who spent the last three seasons running Dallas’ defense.

Quinn previously served as the Atlanta Falcons head coach from 2015-2020, going 43-42 and notably helping the team advance to Super Bowl LI, where the Falcons infamously lost a 28-3 lead to fall to the New England Patriots. He restored his reputation around the NFL by overseeing some of the league’s top-ranked defenses in Dallas, which is fresh off its third straight playoff appearance.

Also well known for overseeing the Seattle Seahawks’ defense under Pete Carroll from 2013-2014, Quinn was widely viewed as a favorite to return to the West Coast, with Carroll stepping out of the head-coaching job this offseason. Seattle recently hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, however, leaving Washington as the final vacancy.

Quinn joins a Commanders team that recently welcomed both new ownership and front-office leadership. Josh Harris now oversees the ownership group, while former San Francisco 49ers executive Adam Peters was installed this offseason as the new general manager. The new contingent owns the No. 2 overall pick in April’s 2024 NFL Draft.

As a general rule — one that applies to any fantasy sport (or human undertaking) — we should try to make decisions based on as much information as can be reasonably gathered. We want more data, not less.

We certainly shouldn’t allow a player’s most recent game to completely reset their value moving forward. Habitually overreacting to small-sample performances is a terrible way to operate as a fantasy manager.

Of course, it’s not as if habitual underreaction is particularly helpful, either. Ideally, you can find a middle ground. We need to be able to recognize true breakouts or declines as they happen, while also accepting that sports are full of noise and false promises.

No matter how you personally tend to operate in your fantasy life, I’m afraid the community at large will definitely continue to exaggerate the importance of single-game performances — particularly spotlight games on the biggest postseason stages.

With this fact in mind, today’s mission is to review a few players who have clearly acquired new coordinates on 2024 fantasy draft boards, based largely on January surges and slides.

Let’s begin with the one player on our list who still has a game ahead of him …

Isiah Pacheco, Kansas City Chiefs 📈

Three weeks ago, someone around here produced a two-round fantasy mock draft that did not include Pacheco. Just an outrageous whiff. Truly scandalous. At the time, Pacheco was in consideration at the end of the second round, but, ultimately, I closed with James Cook, Jalen Hurts and Nico Collins. A regrettable mistake.

Today, swimming in that regret, I’d slot Pacheco in the back half of the first round. He has a firm grip on a high-usage featured role for Kansas City, with receiving volume and goal-line work included. Pacheco has scored at least one TD in each of his last seven games and he’s delivered at…

As the home team in Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs get to make the first choice on which uniform to wear for the big game this year and it appears they’ve made their decision. 

The Chiefs unveiled their uniform choice on Tuesday and they’ve decided to wear their red jersey, which is what they’ve worn in three of their prior four Super Bowls. The Chiefs equipment team was busy on Tuesday sewing the Super Bowl LVIII patch onto each uniform and if you’re wondering what that patch looks like, the team was kind enough to share what it looks like on Patrick Mahomes’ uniform. 

The Chiefs will almost certainly be wearing their white pants, and if that happens, you might have deja vu. If they go with that uniform combination, there’s a good chance that both teams will be wearing the same exact combo that they wore back in Super Bowl LIV, a game where Kansas City beat San Francisco 31-20. 

This will mark Kansas City’s sixth trip to the NFL’s biggest game and the fourth time they’ll be wearing their red jersey. Here’s how they’ve fared in each jersey color in the big game: 

Chiefs in red: 2-1 (Wins over Vikings in Super Bowl IV and 49ers in Super Bowl LIV; loss to Bucs in Super Bowl LV)
Chiefs in white: 1-1 (Win over Eagles last year, loss to Packers in the first Super Bowl)

In last year’s Super Bowl, the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35 while wearing white, which is notable, because the team wearing white has been on a HOT STREAK in the Super Bowl. Over the past 19 years, the team wearing white has gone 16-3, which is why the 49ers might be thrilled that they get to wear their road jersey. That being said, one of those three losses came in Super Bowl LIV when the 49ers were defeated by the Chiefs. 

This will be the 49ers eighth time in the NFL’s biggest game and they have a winning record whether they wear their red jersey or white jersey.

Underclassmen welcome

The Reese’s Senior Bowl has always accepted juniors who met graduation requirements but the game is now an option for all underclassmen prospects who have declared for the NFL Draft regardless of whether or not they have completed degree requirements. 

There are roughly a dozen junior prospects that have been invited and accepted an invitation to the 2024 NFL Draft, including Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson, Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II, Kansas edge rusher Austin Booker, Miami safety Kamren Kinchens and BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia.
