Ohio State player says Ryan Day ‘unfairly criticized’ over Michigan losses

INDIANAPOLIS — It’s been tough sledding lately in Columbus, Ohio. No matter how good the Buckeyes have been, there’s been a dark cloud over Ohio State, having lost to rival Michigan football the past three years.

Winning The Game had started to appear to be OSU’s birthright, given the results dating back to Jim Tressel’s tenure in Columbus. But after former Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh said at Big Ten media days in 2021 that Michigan would beat Ohio State, win the Big Ten, or die trying, things turned around in Ann Arbor in a hurry.

Now it’s the 2024 iteration of Big Ten media days and the Ohio State contingent has its crack at dispelling media narratives on day one. Senior OSU edge rusher Jack Sawyer spent some of his time on the dais backing his head coach, Ryan Day, after the past three years of losses.

“It’s a tough thing to look at,” Sawyer said. “If you ask Coach Day, Coach Day is a man enough to sit up here and tell you that’s part of the job he signed up to do.”

Sawyer went further, noting that the narratives have targeted his head coach.

Day went from being something of a wunderkind to being 1-3 in the rivalry. There were moments where either Day was overconfident (behind closed doors, he said in 2020 that the Buckeyes would hang 100 on the Wolverines) or one of his cohorts was (receivers coach Brian Hartline proclaimed that what OSU did in the dark would come to light in 2022 before Michigan won, 45-23). Sawyer says that it’s the players’ fault and that Day doesn’t deserve any of the criticism he’s getting from the media over the past three years.

“Me being a guy who would go to war for him any day, regardless of the topic, I think that he gets wrongly criticized over a bunch of stuff,” Sawyer said. “A bunch of junk comes up after — comes out after we lost to those…

  • Jakeem Grant among receivers/returners trying out with the Giants

Jakeem Grant among receivers/returners trying out with the Giants

Jakeem Grant was among a group of wide receivers and returners the Giants worked out on Monday.

The Giants’ receivers were worked out with special teams in mind, according to Art Stapleton of the Bergen Record. Grant has four career punt return touchdowns and two career kickoff return touchdowns, and the new kickoff rule has NFL teams increasingly seeing value in players with big-play ability in the return game.

The Giants also worked out receivers Byron Pringle, T.J. Luther and Lincoln Victor. Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano was brought in for a workout primarily to throw to the receivers.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2016, Grant spent six seasons in Miami and was a Pro Bowl returner in 2021. He also played briefly for the Bears and has 100 catches in his career.

Grant hasn’t played in the regular season since 2021. He suffered a torn Achilles tendon in training camp with the Browns in 2022 and suffered a torn patellar tendon in the preseason with the Browns in 2023.

  • Big Ten Media Days 2024 schedule, dates: When coaches, teams will speak during three-day event

Big Ten Media Days 2024 schedule, dates: When coaches, teams will speak during three-day event

Big Ten Media Days are set commence this week, putting a bow on college football’s talking season as the league’s 18 teams descend upon Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, to discuss the upcoming season and all the change it brings.

Though Ohio State has dominated a lot of preseason talk, the Big Ten’s newcomers will take center stage during their first major media appearance as members of the conference. Representatives from Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA will outline expectations and provide a lookahead for their inaugural seasons.

Elsewhere, Michigan will field plenty of questions as it sets forth without coach Jim Harbaugh, who left for the NFL after leading the Wolverines to a 15-0 season capped by their first national title since the BCS era began. New coach and former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will replace him at the podium and on the sidelines.

He’s not the only new face taking over a Big Ten program this fall. Michigan State’s Jonathan Smith, UCLA’s DeShaun Foster and Indiana’s Curt Cignetti are entering their first season at Big Ten schools, while Northwestern’s David Braun faces his first media days slate as a full-time coach.

Below is the full list of participants who will make the rounds beginning on Tuesday, and be sure to scroll below the schedule for in-depth coverage from 2024 Big Ten Media Days. All times below Eastern.

  • Top 10 QB setups entering 2024 season: These NFL teams are doing the most to support their signal-callers

Top 10 QB setups entering 2024 season: These NFL teams are doing the most to support their signal-callers

Quarterbacks are important. There’s no disputing that. It’s why NFL teams are so quick to reset the position’s market when locking up even relatively unproven signal-callers for the long haul.

Oftentimes, however, a quarterback is only as effective as his supporting cast. There are a select number of transcendent talents, to be sure: Put Patrick Mahomes on any franchise, and his track record of NFL stardom suggests he’d elevate any lineup. Still, the easiest way to project a quarterback’s success is by looking at what’s around him, both on the field and on the sidelines.

Here, we’re ranking the 10 best quarterback situations entering the 2024 season, accounting for 1) skill weapons, 2) offensive linemen, 3) coaches and 4) defensive support, in roughly that order. Just because a quarterback has an enviable situation, of course, doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed a Super Bowl run; an elite setup has the ability to simply make a lesser passer competitive.

All that said, here are the teams doing the most to support their quarterback going into the season:

    Wild cards

    Atlanta Falcons

There’s a lot of upside, to be sure, with Robinson likely to take a bigger role as the do-it-all dual threat. The coaches are intriguing. Is there enough out wide to truly aid Cousins and meet his big-money expectations?

    Buffalo Bills

For all the questions thrown the Bills’ way after their complete overhaul of Allen’s receiving corps, this isn’t as barren an infrastructure as you might think: Cook is an explosive dual threat out of the backfield, and Kincaid has the upside to be a Pro Bowl pass catcher at tight end. Still, in today’s NFL, it’s tough to outgun the best of the best when you’re lacking a bona fide No. 1 on the outside.

    Jacksonville Jaguars

Etienne might be an All-Pro in a bigger market, while Kirk, Davis and Engram all serve functionally as No. 2-level outlets. The question is, how much can the line and…

  • 2026 5-star QB out of Folsom (CA) is a confirmed visitor to Texas A&M this month

2026 5-star QB out of Folsom (CA) is a confirmed visitor to Texas A&M this month

    .

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has already proven that succeeding Jimbo Fisher, one of the top recruiters for nearly a decade-plus, isn’t impossible. His three-year DC career with the Aggies proved he already has the recruiting chops to contend in the SEC.

After two years as Duke’s head coach, Elko’s utilization of the transfer portal resulted in an impressive 16 wins in just two seasons in Durham while working with less recruiting talent compared to what he inherited ahead of his inaugural 2024 season.

Already landing 19 commitments in Elko’s first 2025 recruiting class, A&M’s 2026 cycle is slowly gaining momentum this summer after landing two defensive back prospects and ahead of Texas A&M’s annual recruiting pool party at the end of the month, one of the top 2026 signal callers will officially make a trip to College Station.

According to Rivals insider Landyn Rosow, 2026 5-star QB Ryder Lyons will attend the annual pool party, which has produced many commitments over the years and will continue under Elko and Co.

Lyons possesses impressive arm, accuracy, and elite touch. He completed over 68% of his passes for 3,578 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions on the year while running for 929 yards and 23 (!) touchdowns on the ground during his 2023 sophomore season at Folsom HS.

According to 247Sports, Lyons is ranked 11th in the 2026 cycle, third in quarterback prospect, and second in California prospect.

  • Dallas Turner signs rookie deal with Vikings

Dallas Turner signs rookie deal with Vikings

The Vikings now have both of their first-round picks under contract.

After it was reported on Friday that quarterback J.J. McCarthy had agreed to terms with Minnesota, the club announced on Sunday that McCarthy and linebacker Dallas Turner have each signed their rookie deals.

The Vikings traded up to select McCarthy at No. 10 overall and then traded back into the first round to select Turner at No. 17.

Turner, 21, was the SEC co-defensive player of the year in 2023 for his performance in his last year at Alabama. He finished the season tied for the conference lead with 10 sacks and a team-high 14.5 tackles for loss.

McCarthy and Turner put pen to paper after reporting for training camp this weekend.

  • Florida football recruiting: Gators land five-star legacy WR Vernell Brown III over Miami, Ohio State

Florida football recruiting: Gators land five-star legacy WR Vernell Brown III over Miami, Ohio State

    247Sports

Florida added a gem to its 2025 recruiting class Sunday when highly touted receiver Vernell Brown III announced his commitment to the Gators over Florida State, Miami and Ohio State. Brown is a five-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite and is the No. 7 receiver in the class according to the Top247 rankings.

The Orlando, Florida native is a Florida legacy commitment as his father played receiver and defensive back for the Gators from 2001-05. At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, Brown is a potential playmaker out of the slot. He’s also a proven return threat at Jones High School, where he plays both offense and defense. Brown caught 70 passes for 1,363 yards with 10 touchdowns as a junior.

Assembling a strong recruiting class will be important for third-year Florida coach Billy Napier as he enters the 2024 season with an 11-14 record. The Gators also face a brutally difficult schedule, which makes recruiting momentum a key as he seeks to reassure UF’s brass that the program is headed in the right direction.

Brown is a “dynamic athlete with elite short-area quickness and explosive movement patterns,” according to 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins. Here is more from Ivins’ scouting report on the Gators’ new commitment:

Has impacted the game in all three phases at the prep level and impressed at times as a defensive back, but ceiling appears to be highest as a slot receiver that can generate chunk plays with his run-after-catch capabilities. Eats on in-breaking routes as he creates separation by sinking his hips and then quickly driving towards soft spots in…

  • Davante Adams would like Tom Brady to unretire and play QB for the Raiders: ‘I don’t care’ how old he is

Davante Adams would like Tom Brady to unretire and play QB for the Raiders: ‘I don’t care’ how old he is

    Getty Images

Davante Adams didn’t rule out a reunion with Aaron Rodgers when asked recently about rumors of his trade availability. It turns out Rodgers isn’t the only big-name quarterback Adams would be interested in playing with, however, with the Las Vegas Raiders star telling Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast he’d like to lure Tom Brady out of retirement.

“Hell yes,” Adams laughed, when asked about the longtime New England Patriots signal-caller. “You gonna talk about how old he is. I don’t care. I don’t care. … I think I’d be the first person to play with Tom and Aaron [Rodgers]. So that’d be pretty cool. He’s gotta still be able to throw it better than half these dudes in the league.”

Adams added that he’d welcome Brady, who turns 47 in August, even if he were “58.”

It just so happens that Brady already has a direct connection to Adams’ team, as the seven-time Super Bowl champion has been vying for a minority ownership stake in the Raiders since last offseason. Brady himself also hinted at another comeback earlier this year, specifically mentioning the Raiders as a possibility. Since then, however, he’s put more public focus on his upcoming broadcasting job with Fox Sports.

For now, all parties involved in the big-name gossip appear to be entrenched: Brady in retirement, Rodgers with the New York Jets, and Adams with the Raiders, with the latter also telling Sharpe he’s “locked in” with Las Vegas. Just don’t consider Adams uninterested if the opportunity arises to spice things up under center.
