Cowboys’ loss to 49ers was humbling, but it is one game

The Cowboys turned in a terrible performance in Sunday night’s 42-10 loss to the 49ers, and Dallas coach Mike McCarthy tried to put that in perspective after the game.

“The biggest thing is for us to be accountable. It was clearly humbling, but it is one game,” McCarthy said. “Start with me, I didn’t do a good job tonight.”

McCarthy said the Cowboys need to sit down and watch the tape and figure out exactly what went wrong, in all three phases of the game.

“We will clearly acknowledge it. I’m not a burn the tape guy. I think that’s a crock of shit,” he said. “They played extremely well and we did not.”

The Cowboys have now won three games by scores of 40-0, 30-10 and 38-3, and lost two games by scores of 28-16 and 42-10.

“It’s been a wide range of performance. As wide a range as I can ever recall in a five-week period,” McCarthy said.

Now McCarthy needs to get to work to see how his team can get some consistency, starting next Monday night against the Chargers.

  • Cowboys vs. 49ers: Dallas set to have preferred starting five OL for first time since 2021 postseason

Cowboys vs. 49ers: Dallas set to have preferred starting five OL for first time since 2021 postseason

The Dallas Cowboys have been shuffling the deck along their offensive line since the start of the 2022 season. They haven’t had their “best five” starting offensive linemen on the field together since their 23-17 2021 NFC Wild Card Round loss against the San Francisco 49ers. Their offensive line from left-to-right that day featured Pro Bowl tackle Tyron Smith, guard Connor Williams, Pro Bowl center Tyler Biadasz, All-Pro right guard Zack Martin and tackle La’el Collins.

Entering their 2023 “Sunday Night Football” matchup with a team that has eliminated them from the postseason in each of the last two years, the Cowboys suffered a 19-12 loss in the NFC Divisional Round in 2022, Dallas will finally have their preferred starting offensive combination: Eight-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time First-Team All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith at left tackle, Tyler Smith — the team’s first-round pick in 2022 — at left guard, Pro Bowler Tyer Biadasz at center, eight-time Pro Bowler and six-time First-Team All-Pro  Zack Martin at right guard and Terence Steele at right tackle. Tyron Smith (knee) and Martin (thigh), who didn’t practice Wednesday but did participate fully in practice on Thursday and Friday are active for Week 5, securing Dallas’ ideal offensive front.

The team’s inactives are former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (emergency third QB), safety Israel Mukuamu, rookie cornerback Eric Scott, offensive lineman Asim Richards, wide receiver Jallen Brooks, tight end Peyton Hendershot and rookie defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko. Backup running back Rico Dowdle, who didn’t practice Wednesday while dealing with a hip injury, is active tonight after fully practicing on Thursday and Friday.

Tyler Smith missed the first two weeks of the 2023 season with a hamstring injury. Tyron Smith has missed the last two weeks against the Arizona Cardinals and the New England Patriots with a knee…

Rams activate Cooper Kupp off of IR

The Rams have officially cleared the way for receiver Cooper Kupp to make his season debut on Sunday against the Eagles.

Los Angeles has activated Kupp to the 53-man roster off of injured reserve, the team announced on Saturday.

Kupp missed the first four weeks with a hamstring injury. He returned to practice on Wednesday and all indications throughout the week have been that Kupp will play in Week 5.

In nine games last year, Kupp caught 75 passes for 812 yards with six touchdowns.

The Rams also activated outside linebacker Ochaun Mathis and signed receiver/returner Austin Trammell to the 53-man roster.

  • Eagles will be without Fletcher Cox against the Rams

Eagles will be without Fletcher Cox against the Rams

Eagles will be without Fletcher Cox against the Rams originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles will have to face the Rams in Los Angeles on Sunday without six-time Pro Bowler Fletcher Cox,

Cox, 32, had an epidural in his back earlier this week but the team expects him to miss just one week.

Here’s the full Eagles injury report heading into the weekend:

Out: Fletcher Cox (back), Cam Jurgens (foot), Marlton Tuipulotu (triceps), Sydney Brown (hamstring)

    Questionable: Britain Covey (concussion)

The Eagles will have Justin Evans and Quez Watkins returning.

Jurgens, the starting right guard, is “week-to-week,” according to head coach Nick Sirianni. Veteran Sua Opeta will take his place against the Rams.

Brown was able to practice this week but will need at least one more game off before his return.

Without Cox and Tuipulotu, the Eagles’ depth at defensive tackle will be tested a bit against the Rams. They will have Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Kentavius Street and Moro Ojomo available. Ojomo is expected to make his NFL debut on Sunday.

They have worked hard for an opportunity to be able to have more reps, if that’s the case, if that’s what happens this week, and just take advantage of the opportunities,” Sirianni said. “That’s what being a backup player in this league is about, is that you’ve got to take advantage of your opportunities and make them count when you get them.

“So that’s really what I want to see, and just play with that energy and that passion and that fire that they have been playing with at practice since they have gotten here.”

  • Ranking the top 10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft class: Texans’ C.J. Stroud, Eagles’ Jalen Carter lead the way

Ranking the top 10 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft class: Texans’ C.J. Stroud, Eagles’ Jalen Carter lead the way

We’re four games into the 2023 NFL season, and while looking ahead is typically what I do this time of year, it’s instructive to also look at how the rookies, just a month into their professional careers, are doing.

(Regarding looking ahead: On Thursday’s “With the First Pick” podcast, that’s exactly what Rick Spielman and I did — we looked at those NFL teams off to such sluggish starts that they’ve positioned themselves for a run at Caleb Williams with the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. So if that’s your jam, check that out.)

Specifically, I’ll rank the top 10 picks from the 2023 NFL Draft class, a group that includes three quarterbacks, six offensive players and a player who went ninth overall but is playing like one of the best players in the league. I watched every NFL snap for all 10 players, and their ranking below reflects both how they’ve performed (obviously), but also takes positional value into account. Put another way: quarterbacks are important, so even if, say, a cornerback played out of his mind, say, on national television against the Giants, he might be ranked lower than perhaps you might expect.

But here’s the thing: nine of the 10 players on this list are off to good-to-great starts; only one has struggled (though he has improved each week), and that’s likely due to a foot injury he’s still recovering from. Basically: there’s a lot of reason for optimism if your team had a top-10 pick because those guys have been impressive thus far.

We’ll start at No. 10 and work our way to No. 1.
