The Kansas City Chiefs moved one step closer to an unprecedented ‘three-peat’ while Washington upset the Detroit Lions in a thriller in the NFL play-offs.

As the number one seeds in each Conference, Kansas City and Detroit earned a bye to week two of the post-season, the Divisional Round.

The Chiefs returned to action with a 23-14 win at home against the Houston Texans on Saturday, but a historic season for the Lions came to a surprise end as they were stunned 45-31 at home by the Commanders, the NFC’s sixth seed.

After a 4-13 record last season, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has led Washington to the NFC Championship game for the first time since 1992, when the Redskins – as they were previously known – claimed their third Super Bowl win.

Kansas City kept alive their hopes of becoming the first team to win three straight Super Bowls.

Led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have reached the NFL’s championship game four times in the past five years, winning it three times.

Last season, they became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Tom Brady’s New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005, and they are back within one win of the big game.

The Chiefs will play in their seventh straight AFC Championship game next week against either the Baltimore Ravens or the Buffalo Bills, while the Commanders will visit the Philadelphia Eagles or the Los Angeles Rams.

The final Divisional Round games are played on Sunday.

    Commanders prevail after second-quarter shootout

Detroit were the NFL’s highest scorers this season, setting a host of franchise records including a 15-2 campaign.

Washington were the fifth highest scorers, and after a Jahmyr Gibbs touchdown in the first quarter for Detroit, the two teams produced a thrilling second quarter.

Brian Robinson Jr’s score for Washington sparked a run of six touchdowns and 42 points in just over…

The Chiefs are now headed to the AFC title game for the seventh straight season, which is the second-longest streak in NFL history, trailing only the New England Patriots, who made eight straight appearances starting in 2011.

Kansas City is now just one win away from getting to the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six years. The Chiefs will now await the winner of the Ravens-Bills game. That showdown between Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen will be coming to you Sunday on CBS (stream on Paramount+)

In the NFC, the Detroit Lions will be hosting an upstart Washington Commanders team that’s coming off its first playoff win in 19 years. if the Commanders can pull off the upset in Detroit, they’d advance to the NFC title game for the first time since 1991. Washington currently has the NFC’s longest drought without a conference title game appearance.

In the NFC’s other divisional game, the Los Angeles Rams will be heading to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in what is expected to be a snow game. The Rams and Eagles have combined to represent the NFC in four of the past seven Super Bowls.

  • Steelers reportedly turned down Bears’ request to trade for Mike Tomlin

Steelers reportedly turned down Bears’ request to trade for Mike Tomlin

The Chicago Bears recently took a shot and inquired with the Pittsburgh Steelers about the availability of head coach Mike Tomlin only to be turned down, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Seeking a new head coach, the Bears have spoken to over a dozen candidates since the end of the regular season and general manager Ryan Poles backed up his words earlier this month in trying something different in finding the team’s next leader. During his end-of-season press conference discussing the head-coaching search, he said, “We’ll look at all avenues to get the best coach here.”

According to Schefter, the Bears weren’t the only team to call on Tomlin. Another club reached out to the Steelers and were turned down as Tomlin reportedly has a no-trade clause in his contract.

The timing of the Bears’ inquiry is unclear. Earlier this week, Tomlin was asked about the idea other NFL teams might call about his availability and his response was simply, “Save your time.”

The lack of recent playoff success has drawn criticism among Steelers fans, but with Tomlin having signed a three-year extension in June and the organization’s stability in the head-coaching position — three men in charge since 1969 — change at head coach isn’t likely to come.

One name the Bears have spoken with is Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. He would likely get a thumbs-up from quarterback Caleb Williams, who said this week he’d like an “offensive-minded guy so I can build with him.”

When the 2024 NFL season started, there were 32 teams fighting to get to Super Bowl LIX at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, but now, there are only eight teams left as the divisional round kicks off on Saturday.

In the NFC, the Los Angeles Rams earned a trip to Philadelphia, where they’ll face the Eagles with a spot in the NFC Championship game on the line. In the other NFC divisional game, the Detroit Lions will be hosting a surprise Washington Commanders team that’s coming off its first playoff win in 19 years.

If the Commanders can pull off the upset in Detroit, they’d advance to the NFC title game for the first time since 1991, which is the NFC’s longest drought without a conference title game appearance.

In the AFC, there will be four familiar faces as the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans all made it to the divisional round for the second straight year. This marks just the second time since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 that a conference has sent the same four teams to the divisional round in consecutive seasons.

The Texans will be gunning to get to the AFC title for the first time in franchise history, but if they’re going to do that, they’ll have to figure out a way to beat the Chiefs on Saturday. The divisional round will end on Sunday with a huge showdown on CBS featuring Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen battling it out to get their team to the AFC Championship.

  • Tom Brady intends to continue broadcasting for Fox through duration of contract, says agent

Tom Brady intends to continue broadcasting for Fox through duration of contract, says agent

Despite his involvement in the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching search as a part-owner of the team, Tom Brady will stay in his role as Fox’s No. 1 NFL game analyst, according to his agent.

Don Yee told Sports Business Journal that Brady intends to fulfill the 10-year $375 million contract he has with Fox Sports. He’ll have nine years remaining on that deal after this season.

“Tom has had a tremendous amount of fun working with Fox this year, and he’s really excited about the future with Fox and his growth on their team,” Yee said to SBJ’s Ben Fischer. “And this year was the first year of a long relationship.”

Brady’s involvement in the Raiders’ coaching search presents a conflict of interest with he and play-by-play partner Kevin Burkhardt calling Saturday’s divisional round playoff game between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions. If the Lions advance to the NFC championship game and the Super Bowl, Brady and Burkhardt will broadcast those matchups as well.

The Raiders have interviewed Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as part of their coaching search. Brady reportedly took an active role in recruiting Johnson to interview for the position.

As part of rules put in place by the NFL when he took an ownership stake in the Raiders, Brady is not allowed into another team’s facility. Nor is he permitted to attend other teams’ practices or participate in production meetings with coaches, players and executives of any team whose game he’s calling.

Yet as Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab detailed, Brady’s providing analysis for a Lions game that Johnson is coaching raises several questions:

“How is Brady supposed to call a game without making any mention of Johnson and his offense? Would Brady be honest if he…

New York has requested to interview Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, according to NFL Insider Albert Breer.

Hafley, a Montvale native, was in Green Bay for just a year after he was head coach of Boston College for three seasons. He first broke into the NFL after working in the college ranks coaching defensive backs with Tampa Bay (2012-13) before moving on to Cleveland (2014-15) and San Francisco (2016-18).

The Jets are also set to interview Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores on Friday, according to Jordan Schultz.

Flores is interviewing with several other teams after Minnesota was eliminated from the playoffs, including Jacksonville on Friday and Chicago on Saturday. The Brooklyn native was Miami’s head coach (2019-21), where after a 5-11 season, turned in back-to-back winning seasons at 10-6 and 9-8.

After he was fired by the Dolphins, he served as a senior defensive assistant in Pittsburgh in 2022 before spending the last two seasons with the NFC North team. He got his start in New England where he held a number of roles from 2008-18.
