Will Aaron Rodgers return to the Jets? Senior Bowl buzz applied logic to rampant speculation

MOBILE, Ala. — NFL coaches, general managers, scouts and prospects descended on Mobile, Alabama, this week to watch 2025 NFL Draft prospects compete in drills and live play against similar-caliber competition.

The interviews and on-field assessments of prospects brought teams one step closer to determining their draft boards. But in gathering so many decision-makers in the same place, whispers across practice fields and hotel lobbies also touched on pending big-name free agents, the NFL coaching carousel and league trends.

What did coaches, general managers, agents and more think about trending NFL topics? Here are three things Yahoo Sports learned:

Sure, Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets have moving parts before finalizing a decision. But I was curious what decision-makers who have navigated similar crossroads anticipate as the most likely outcome as the Jets shift to a new regime with head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. One high-ranking AFC executive told me he believes the quarterback’s most likely destination this year is retirement in light of a potential declining interest in his services.

Will the Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers or Tennessee Titans want Rodgers quarterbacking their team? The executive questioned his fit among teams in need of a 2025 passer.

Another high-ranking AFC executive told me he expects Rodgers to play but not for the Jets. The executive’s reasoning: If he were building a team, his primary goal for a new regime would be installing and building upon a system that will support sustained success. The exec would want to build and teach players an offense that best caters to their long-term quarterback’s success rather than run a Rodgers-tailored offense in Year 1 then require players recalibrate their expectations for a makeover in Year 2.

It’s too soon to tell whether Glenn and Dougey will reach the same conclusion about a…

2025 Super Bowl picks, Chiefs vs. Eagles odds, SGP, bets by top-rated model: This 6-way NFL parlay pays 25-1

The No. 1 seed Kansas City Chiefs will try to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight championships when they face the No. 2 seed Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday, February 9 in New Orleans. Kansas City escaped with a 32-29 win over Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes accounted for three touchdowns. Philadelphia is coming off a dominant performance against Washington in the NFC Championship Game, cruising to a 55-23 win and scoring the most points of any team in an NFL playoff game this season. The Chiefs are 1.5-point favorites in the 2025 Super Bowl odds from the SportsLine Consensus, down a half-point from the opener, while the over/under for total points scored is 49.5, unchanged from the opening line. Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith did not practice on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury, but defensive end Brandon Graham (triceps) was designated to return from IR on Thursday.

Philadelphia is back in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years, hoping to get revenge for its loss to Kansas City from two years ago when the Eagles were favored by two. The Chiefs picked up a 38-35 win in that title game, winning outright as underdogs, but which team should you include in your 2025 Super Bowl parlay picks and Chiefs vs. Eagles SGP? Before you make any Super Bowl picks or NFL parlays, be sure to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven computer model.

Allen v Jackson for MVP and a breathtaking play: NFL end of season awards

    MVP

Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills. Take your pick between transcendent quarterbacks: Allen or Lamar Jackson. Neither answer is wrong. I edge towards Allen here, for the sole reason that he hasn’t won the award before. That’s not right; it’s not fair. But it’s the only way to split the fine margins between the two.

Jackson has the stronger statistical case. Allen’s is based on numbers and vibes. He sanded the rough edges off his game this year, allowing the Bills to lean into their powerful run game before he donned his cape in crucial moments.

Related: Then and now: how do the Eagles and Chiefs compare to 2023’s Super Bowl?

In a pass-heavy offense, Allen’s numbers may have been even more eye-popping. But by embracing a new style, Allen was able to pilot the most efficient, effective offense of his career.

Most electric player of the season

Saquon Barkley, RB, Philadelphia Eagles. Thank you, football gods, for delivering us a healthy Barkley season behind the best run-blocking line in the league. Every Barkley carry this season has been an adventure. You don’t know what’s coming; you just prepare to be amazed. It could be leaping backward over a defender, making a would-be tackler tumble out of his cleats, or slithering through the smallest of gaps before darting away for a 50-yard score. Even without the ball, Barkley has been must-see TV, flattening pass-rushers in protection. But it’s his home-run threat that has sparkled this year. Barkley has 11 rushing touchdowns of 60-plus yards in the regular season and postseason, putting him second all-time behind Adrian Peterson. Not even Jim Brown ripped off chunk plays at this clip.

After the era of Running Backs Don’t Matter, Barkley has proven that handing the ball to the most explosive athlete on the field is still the most thrilling sight in the sport.

2025 Super Bowl: Chiefs vs. Eagles kickoff time, where to watch NFL playoffs, streaming, TV channel, odds

Super Bowl LIX is now set as the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will go toe-to-toe in New Orleans with the winner hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

Both of these teams have punched their ticket down to the Big Easy with impressive wins in the conference championships. Philadelphia leaned heavily on its ground attack, rushing for six touchdowns in a blowout win over the Washington Commanders. As for the Chiefs, their matchup with the Buffalo Bills came down to the wire, but Patrick Mahomes was once again able to sprinkle some late-game magic to reach the Super Bowl for the fifth time in his career.

Here’s an early preview of Super Bowl 59 and some notable storylines to keep an eye on.

    Rematch of Super Bowl LVII

This isn’t the first time that these two teams have met on this massive stage. We only have to go back to Super Bowl LVII in February of 2023 to find their last matchup. Back then, Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs were able to get the 38-35 win over Jalen Hurts and the Eagles for the franchise’s second Super Bowl title.

Mahomes and Hurts are just the fourth pair of opposing quarterbacks to meet in multiple Super Bowls, joining Terry Bradshaw vs. Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman vs. Jim Kelly, and Eli Manning vs. Tom Brady.

    Chiefs eye three-peat

The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to accomplish a feat that has never been done before in the NFL: Win three straight Super Bowls. In fact, the Chiefs are already the first team ever that has advanced to the Super Bowl with a chance at a three-peat. They are also just the fourth team overall to reach three straight Super Bowls (1971-73 Miami Dolphins,…

  • Pete Carroll: Too early to say if Raiders would consider Russell Wilson

Pete Carroll: Too early to say if Raiders would consider Russell Wilson

Soon-to-be free agent quarterback Russell Wilson has indicated that his first choice this offseason is to re-sign with the Steelers. But could another option for Wilson be Las Vegas?

New Raiders coach Pete Carroll, who coached Wilson for 10 years in Seattle, was asked that question on the What The Football podcast, and he said it’s too soon to tell.

“It’s so early and we’re just in the midst of trying to find the puzzle pieces, not even putting them together yet, so I can’t even say. Free agency hasn’t come yet,” Carroll said.

Carroll did say that anyone who can help the Raiders would be considered.

“I promise you, if you’re a real competitor you’re not letting options get away from you,” Carroll said.

The Raiders still have Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell under contract for 2025, but it’s hard to believe Carroll would want to go into the season with either of them as his starter. The Raiders will surely add a quarterback this offseason, and Wilson is one to watch.

  • 2025 Super Bowl: Cowboys looking at Eagles’ and Chiefs’ roster-building methods as they evaluate approach

2025 Super Bowl: Cowboys looking at Eagles’ and Chiefs’ roster-building methods as they evaluate approach

FRISCO, Texas — For the second time in three seasons, the Dallas Cowboys are sitting on the couch while the Philadelphia Eagles, one of their NFC East division rivals, prepare to play in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The last time this happened in the 2022 season, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones mistakenly labeled the Eagles’ approach to free agency and roster building as “putting it all out there and paying for it later.” The Eagles have used their approach of being aggressive in both free agency and re-signing their own, top drafted players to early extensions to win NFC titles in both 2022 and 2024.

Now, Jerry Jones and his son, Cowboys COO and EVP Stephen Jones, admitted they’re at least open to evaluating their approach and potentially making changes when they spoke at new head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s introductory press conference Monday.

Dallas went 7-10 in 2024 — following three consecutive 12-5 seasons from 2021 to 2023 — after spending an NFL-low $20.47 million in free agency, per OverTheCap.com, since the last Super Bowl was played. It almost exclusively relied on its own draft picks to provide immediate impacts, including rookies, and that didn’t work out. That was Jerry Jones’ “get it done with less” approach.

“We’re obviously evaluating where it didn’t go right in terms of this drought that people say we’re in in terms of a championship game or a Super Bowl. We just have to continue to make this roster better,” Stephen Jones said Monday. “Certainly we’ll do a real deep dive on putting some personnel together whether it be through the draft, free agency. I know typically that’s not been the way we’ve done this team, but we’ll certainly look at it. … We’re going to take a long hard look at how we’ve looked at free agency. And if we need to change some things there, we will.”

  • Saints interviewed Kellen Moore on Monday night

Saints interviewed Kellen Moore on Monday night

Word on Sunday was that the Saints would be in Philadelphia as soon as Monday to conduct an in-person head coaching interview with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and that’s exactly what happened.

The Saints announced on Tuesday morning that they completed an interview with Moore on Monday night. It is the second time that Moore has met with the team, but the first time that they have spoken in person.

Moore’s interview came after the Saints had second interviews with Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is also expected to interview with the team, but Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady pulled his name from consideration and it’s unclear if Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will opt to meet with them.

If the Saints decide that Moore is their choice, they won’t be able to finalize a deal until after the Super Bowl.

  • Nick Sirianni making case for greatest head coach in Eagles history with second Super Bowl appearance

Nick Sirianni making case for greatest head coach in Eagles history with second Super Bowl appearance

PHILADELPHIA — There isn’t a head coach in Philadelphia Eagles history that had the cultural impact of Andy Reid or the ability to bring home a title like Doug Pederson. There hasn’t been a motivator like Dick Vermeil either.

Nick Sirianni may be a combination of all three, part of the reason why his charm is only appealing to the Eagles locker room and few outside of it.

The culture Sirianni has installed in the Eagles organization is a spin off of the foundation Reid installed and Pederson continued. Sirianni put his own spin on how to build a winning football team and continue it, using the Vermeil motivational approach to get his players to buy in.

Even Vermeil had a shelf life in Philadelphia, as his message grew stale and the Eagles culture eradicated. Same with Pederson, who actually brought a championship to Philadelphia and couldn’t replicate that success.

The only coach close to getting the Eagles back to the Super Bowl was Reid, and even the back half of his tenure in Philadelphia wasn’t as successful as the first six years (four consecutive conference championship games and a Super Bowl appearance).

Sirianni found a way to break the ice that thawed Eagles head coaches in the Super Bowl era. He’s the first head coach in franchise history to take the organization to two Super Bowls, the first head coach since Greasy Neale (1947-1949) to coach in two league championship games.

The Eagles have just five Super Bowl appearances in their history, and two have come in the last three years under Sirianni. Not only has Sirianni taken the Eagles to the Super Bowl twice, but he’s accomplished that feat in just four seasons. Only Joe Gibbs and Mike Tomlin have reached that mark in NFL history (and both have won one of the two Super Bowls they were in).

Sirianni has a 48-20 record after four seasons, an astonishing .706 win percentage. Only George Seifert has more wins…
