South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers exits LSU game with injury, will try to play in second half

    USATSI

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers suffered an ankle injury late in the second quarter of Saturday’s 36-33 loss to No. 16 LSU. Sellers dropped back to pass on third-and-10 from LSU’s 35-yard line but landed awkwardly on his leg while taking a sack. Sellers was taken directly to the locker room before the first-half ended.

Though the ABC broadcast indicated that Sellers got his ankle taped and was going to try and play in the second half, former Auburn transfer Robby Ashford finished the rest of the game with 42 yards passing on 2 of 4 attempts.

“He’s got a little bit of an ankle,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said of Sellers during a halftime interview with ABC. “We’ll go in there and look at it and see where we are.”

Sellers was having a breakout game against the Tigers prior to his injury. He completed eight of his 15 pass attempts for 112 yards and rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. His 75-yard touchdown rush gave South Carolina a 24-10 lead with 4:28 to go in the second quarter.

Brother Rice struggles to keep up with St. Rita’s Walter Jones. And that final call for the TD? ‘It was money.’

Junior receiver Walter Jones spent much of Friday night begging St. Rita’s coaches to call a deep pass to him.

Jones said he asked enough that it started to be annoying. But when the game was on the line, the coaches dialed up the deep shot and Jones delivered.

“In the beginning of the game, I was telling (offensive coordinator John Nee) to run that play,” Jones said. “I kept telling him. He was getting frustrated with me.

“Then at the end of the game, I just gave him a look on the sidelines. We ran that route, and it was money.”

Money, indeed. Jones hauled in a pass from Steven Armbruster and broke free for an 80-yard touchdown with 1:06 left, lifting the Mustangs to a 14-7 win over host Brother Rice in a CCL/ESCC crossover game in Chicago.

Armbruster completed 11 of 19 passes for 203 yards and two TDs, including a 58-yard scoring strike to Lucas Davis for St. Rita (2-1). Cormac Lacy and Killian Lacy each had a sack and Justin Buckner made several key tackles.

Jaylin Green ran for 85 yards on 10 carries and Tyler Lofton added 84 yards on 11 carries for the Brother Rice (1-2). Charlie Stec had two sacks and Conner Stack provided two tackles for loss.

The Crusaders tied the game 7-7 with 1:30 left when junior quarterback CJ Gray ran for a 1-yard TD on fourth-and-goal.

The Mustangs answered right back thanks to Jones, who has emerged as a big-time playmaker, according to St. Rita coach Martin Hopkins.

“He’s a very special athlete,” Hopkins said. “We had him playing corner at the end of the half, too. He’s one of those guys we can put anywhere and he’s always going to give all his effort.

“For a young guy, he operates more maturely than his age. Kudos to him. He does his job in the run game and he gets his pay days in the pass game.”

On the winner, Jones broke open over the middle of the field and…

Alabama vs. Wisconsin: Behind Enemy Lines with Badgers Wire’s Ben Kenney

    .

On Saturday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide will travel north to play what is the first true road game of the Kalen DeBoer era against the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison, Wisconsin.

In what is Alabama’s first road trip to a Big Ten program since Penn State in 2011, the Badgers will likely provide a test for the Crimson Tide, who are coming off a bit of a disappointing Week 2 victory over South Florida. So, to learn more about the Badgers ahead of this Saturday, we here at Roll Tide Wire got the opportunity to talk to Ben Kenney of Badgers Wire about what Alabama fans should expect going into Week 3.

Here is our conversation about the upcoming Alabama vs. Wisconsin game, which includes a Badgers point of view on quarterback play, names to know, a potential upset, and more.

Q: While a limited sample size, are there any noticeable differences that Tyler Van Dyke has brought at quarterback compared to what Wisconsin has had in recent years?

A: “The only real comparison can be made to Tanner Mordecai in 2023, since the Graham Mertz era from 2020-2022 was under an entirely different regime. But it’s hard to tell any real difference between Van Dyke and Mordecai through two weeks. Van Dyke has been up-and-down, as Mordecai was last season. There have been flashes, mainly in the first half against South Dakota last weekend. But his season has been plagued by inconsistency. So, to answer the question, no, there isn’t a noticeable difference. Both Van Dyke and Mordecai have the potential to make game-changing plays, but neither have done so consistently. I think Saturday’s…

  • Pac-12 eyeing Mountain West schools to join Oregon State, Washington State to keep league alive, per report

Pac-12 eyeing Mountain West schools to join Oregon State, Washington State to keep league alive, per report

The Pac-12 is on the cusp of poaching four Mountain West schools to join Oregon State and Washington State in preserving the league, according to Yahoo Sports. Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State are the Mountain West schools expected to apply for membership into the conference. An announcement could come as soon as Friday, according to The Athletic.

Those four schools represent arguably the top brands in the legacy Mountain West and schools that have been considered for power conference membership in the past. If the four schools move by the 2026 season, the Pac-12 will only need to add two more programs to reach the minimum eight schools to be an FBS conference.

Ten of the 12 legacy Pac-12 schools officially left the conference in 2024 as the existing grant of rights expired. Four schools went to the Big Ten, four to the Big 12 and two to the ACC, leaving Oregon State and Washington State without a long-term home. The pair will compete as de facto FBS Independents over the next two years and are ineligible for an auto-bid to the College Football Playoff.

However, the legal status means that the two Pac-12 schools still had a massive war chest of $250 million in resources available to them, primarily payouts like NCAA Tournament units and existing contracts. According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, buying out four schools from the Mountain West in a one-year period would cost approximately $187 million. The Pac-12’s existing resources could be leveraged to help offset that difference.

The long-term goal of the expansion would be to rebuild the Pac-12 as a power-level conference. The league continues to legally possess “autonomy five” status and would conceivably retain it in a new form. The next step for…

  • FOOTBALL: Hancock seizes his ‘One Chance’ to secure Claremore’s win over Bartlesville

FOOTBALL: Hancock seizes his ‘One Chance’ to secure Claremore’s win over Bartlesville

Sep. 9—In a game that came down to the final possession, Claremore senior Andrew Hancock seized his “one chance” and made it count.

With 23 seconds left and Bartlesville threatening, Hancock embodied the Zebras’ Week 1 theme of “One Chance”, intercepting a pass from Bruins quarterback Nate Neal to secure a thrilling 35-33 season-opening victory for the Zebras on Friday night at Lantow Field.

“We were in Cover 5, so I was (in deep coverage),” Hancock said. “I’m backpedaling, and I see him (the receiver) break across. I saw Michael Robertson undercut, so I went up top. The ball was thrown high. It felt great to put the game away. Their offense was driving, but our defense was holding. It just felt good to get it over with.”

Hancock’s game-sealing interception capped off a night where Claremore leaned heavily on standout performances from its offensive stars.

Senior quarterback Brad Hoisington, a transfer from Oologah, was the driving force behind the Zebras’ attack, rushing for 194 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for 91 yards and another score.

Hoisington wasted no time making an impact, accumulating 144 yards rushing and two touchdowns on his first four carries, including an 80-yard score on Claremore’s second play of the game and a 28-yard dash minutes later.

“Once I got going, I was like, ‘We got this,’” Hoisington said. “Once I got that feeling, it was nonstop from there.”

However, he soon faced a tougher challenge after Bartlesville adjusted.

Hoisington managed only 1 yard on his next eight carries as the Bruins defense tightened up, but he refused to be discouraged, eventually breaking through again with a pivotal 37-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-winner.

“It was just trusting my teammates and knowing that they’re going to have my back, and I’m going to have theirs,”…
