College football analyst and former Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer shared on “The Triple Option” podcast a fact that many Georgia Bulldogs fans would love to hear about former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier.

“I said ‘were you in the game’ and he (Steve Spurrier) said he left, you know, ‘to beat the traffic’ but he said ‘it was bad,’” said Urban Meyer.

It is hard to blame Spurrier or any other Florida fans for leaving the Gators’ 33-20 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies. Florida trailed 20-0 at halftime and 33-6 late in the third quarter. Florida is an abysmal 11-26 against Power Five opponents since the Gators’ infamous shoe throw against LSU.

Many Florida fans and alumni are starting to turn on their current head coach, Billy Napier. Things have turned sour in Gainesville. Miami absolutely demolished Florida in the Swamp in Week 1.

Billy Napier’s seat is red hot right now. Things aren’t getting any easier for the Gators. Florida faces the nation’s hardest schedule and would be doing well to make a bowl game at this point.

“I mean, I’m getting a little bit stressed out here thinking about what’s happening there,” said Meyer. “Because the momentum is gone. It’s been gone for a while there and that’s hard to imagine.”

The Gators are unlikely to meet Steve Spurrier’s modest expectations for the season. “I picked them to go 8-4 and win a bowl game, and if we do that, we can do cartwheels and somersaults around here,” said Spurrier before the season. “We’ll be a happy bunch of Gators.”

Right now, one thing is for sure. Florida fans aren’t a happy bunch of Gators.

LUTZ, Fla. — Jon Gruden has been out of the spotlight, seeking purpose and studying football in a large office building filled with game film since the unveiling of racist, anti-gay and misogynistic emails led to his 2021 ouster from the NFL. Nearly three years after he resigned from the Las Vegas Raiders, the Super Bowl-winning coach believes he’s ready to roam the sidelines again at a different level of the sport: college football.

Gruden opened the doors of his personal coaching headquarters to CBS Sports last week for the first interview he has granted since resigning under pressure from the fallout of those emails. The 61-year-old discussed football, his past and present, and how he believes his future could unfold in a college town. The question is whether his messy NFL exit makes him untouchable as a candidate.

When asked whether he has any remorse about what he wrote in the emails — and pressed on the subject — Gruden responded: “I’m not even, you don’t even … I’m not even going to get into whether or not. The due process will take care of itself. I haven’t even had my due process yet, so for me to sit here and say, ‘Who said what?’ You know, we’ll just go through the process and leave it at that.”

Gruden resigned in October 2021 amid his fourth season with the Raiders after The Wall Street Journal and New York Times uncovered explosive emails dating back to his time as an ESPN analyst between 2011-18. Gruden’s emails were among more than 650,000 reviewed by the NFL as it investigated workplace misconduct within Washington’s NFL franchise. It’s been a wild week since Arch Manning broke college football internet. The Texas Longhorns backup QB accounted for five touchdowns against UTSA after starter Quinn Ewers had to leave in the 2nd quarter with an oblique strain.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Billy Napier remains confident he can earn a fourth season with the Gators despite two lopsided home losses and a loss of confidence among Gator Nation to begin a pivotal Year 3.

“One hundred percent,” Napier said when asked if he has a path forward. “There’s a lot of football to be played.”

Napier said Monday he has been told “nothing” about his future as UF’s coach since his 33-20 SEC-opening loss Saturday to Texas A&M. The Gators’ no-show two weeks after a season-opening 41-17 flop against Miami incited fan outrage and spurred speculation he’d be fired.

Facing a rebuilding program with first-year Aggies coach Mike Elko, the Gators (1-2, 0-1) at one point trailed 33-7 and failed to score during the opening half in the Swamp for the first time 10 years — a 27-2 loss in 2015 to Florida State.

“Saturday was very disappointing and frustrating,” Napier said. “It’s important for everybody to know personally I’m taking total ownership of that.”

Florida has lost two of three games by double digits to open a season for the first time since 1992. Those Gators, though, won seven straight games, lost to eventual national champion Alabama in the SEC title game and finished 9-4.

UF had never recorded two double-digit home losses during its initial three games of any season.

With uproar at a fever pitch, Napier remained stoic and optimistic as the Gators prepare to visit struggling Mississippi State, which will be a six-point home underdog after falling 41-17 as 10.5-point favorites to Toledo in Starkville, Miss.

“I’m going to try to model what I would expect from our players,” he said. “And that for me is total focus on the next opportunity to improve. We’re going to put the [Texas A&M] game to bed today, and then it’s about doing my absolute best to…

Sep. 15—DILLON — Michael Palandr threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns as No. 9 Montana Western picked up a 42-25 victory over No. 3 College of Idaho Saturday at Bulldog Stadium.

Palandr added two scores on the ground as the Bulldogs racked up over 500 yards of offense.

In Helena, Carroll took a late lead on a 21-yard field goal from Spencer Berger to hold off Rocky Mountain College.

Montana Western 42, College of Idaho 25

Dylan Shipley caught a team-high nine passes for 179 yards and one touchdown, Eli Nourse caught four passes and took two of them to the house for Western (2-0 overall, 1-0 in Frontier games).

Travis Marieiro led the Yotes (2-1, 0-1) receivers with 11 grabs for 144 yards.

Quarterback Andy Peters threw for 267 yards and ran for 75 more including one touchdown for C of I.

Carroll 16, Rocky Mountain 13

HELENA — Berger finished 3-for-4 on field goals, including the 21-yard winner with 1:35 left in the game. He made kicks from 25, 44 and 21, and missed from 30 in the third quarter.

Jack Prka threw for 191 yards and ran for 77 more for the Saints (1-1 overall, 1-0 in Frontier games).

Max Lehman carried the ball 11 times and found the end zone for Carroll’s only touchdown.

Graedyn Buell was 13-for-28 passing for the Bears (1-2, 0-1), throwing one touchdown and one interception. He added 56 yards rushing on 22 carries.

Joseph Dwyer hauled in five catches, including the lone touchdown for Rocky Mountain College.

Whitworth 31, Eastern Oregon 19

SPOKANE, Wash. — Evan Liggett caught a pair of touchdown passes from Ryan Blair as Whitworth scored the first 31 points to defeat Eastern Oregon in a non-conference game Saturday.

Ryan finished 17-for-26 for 211 yards and three touchdowns. He was sacked once.

Luis Salgodo carried the ball 24 times and gained 145 yards with one touchdown for the Pirates (2-0).
