  • Clemson football HC Dabo Swinney updates injury status of key starter

Clemson football HC Dabo Swinney updates injury status of key starter

The Clemson Tigers held their first live game of fall camp Saturday.

Afterwards, Tigers coach Dabo Swinney gave injury updates for starting safety Khalil Barnes and cornerback Jeadyn Lukus, as well as offensive lineman Dietrick Pennington.

“Pennington was there,” Swinney told reporters afterwards. “(Lukus) is probably more like Monday. Tuesday he should be back rolling. We’ll see where he’s at.”

While Barnes was a no-go Saturday, Swinney praised the safeties group in his absence.

“Safeties have actually been a bright spot for us,” he said. “I try to find the good in everything. I hate that Khalil has been out for a few days, but it’s kind of forced the opportunity for Ronan (Hanafin) and Ricardo (Jones) and Kylon Griffin. (Rob) Billings and (Kylen) Webb and those guys are getting a ton of work.”

Barnes has been dealing with what Swinney called a “short-term” injury after Wednesday’s practice. He started all all 14 games last year and had four interceptions and three pass breakups. That followed a standout freshman season as an All-American in which he had five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and six pass breakups.

“Our safety group has actually been a really bright spot at camp even with Khalil not out there,” Swinney said. “We all know what he is and what he can do. We’ll get him back at some point, but I think that group as a whole, the arrow’s up by them. Good competition.”

Lukus, a senior who started 10 games at cornerback a season ago and had 34 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and seven pass breakups, was in a yellow, no-contact jersey a day not long after fall camp opened on July 30.

Swinney also revealed that a top freshman, defensive lineman Amare Adams, was held out of Saturday’s scrimmage.

“He kind of sprained his ankle a little bit yesterday… so he wasn’t able to go today, but he’ll be back soon,” Swinney…

  • Tom Brady: New England Patriots unveil statue of NFL legend

Tom Brady: New England Patriots unveil statue of NFL legend

NFL great Tom Brady said he felt “deeply grateful” but “kind of old” after the New England Patriots unveiled a 12ft statue of him.

The legendary quarterback was honoured with the towering bronze sculpture outside the Patriots’ stadium in Massachusetts.

Brady guided the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, before going on to win a seventh with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.

The ceremony revealed the statue of Brady with one arm aloft in triumph – and it was mounted on a six-sided base in a nod to the number of championships he won with the Patriots.

With the base included, the entire construction is 17ft high – to reference the 17 AFC East division titles that Brady won as a starting quarterback.

“This is quite overwhelming to me,” the 48-year-old said. “I feel extremely honoured, deeply grateful and, if I’m being honest, kind of old.

“I never dreamed I’d be standing here two and a half decades later made of bronze and frozen in time.”

Over 23 seasons, three with Tampa Bay, Brady started 333 regular season matches and 48 playoff games, more than any other NFL quarterback in history.

He began his NFL career as the 199th pick of the 2000 draft and initially retired in 2022, before reversing his decision and playing a further season for the Buccaneers.

“Tom Brady’s journey proves that it’s not where you start, but where you finish that counts,” said Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

“Tom wasn’t just the face of our franchise, he was the heartbeat. It’s hard to overstate what Tom accomplished. He didn’t just rewrite the record books, he practically authored a new volume.”

The statue, which stands in the plaza outside the Patriots Hall of Fame, was revealed before their opening pre-season game, a 48-18 win over the Washington Commanders.

Since retiring, Brady has acquired a 5% stake in the Las Vegas Raiders and become a minority owner of English football club Birmingham City.

  • Auburn blue-chip TE Hollis Davidson III suspended from team, faces felony controlled substance charge

Auburn blue-chip TE Hollis Davidson III suspended from team, faces felony controlled substance charge

    Getty Images

Auburn freshman tight end Hollis Davidson III was arrested and charged with felony possession of a Schedule I controlled substance on July 28, according to police records obtained by the Montgomery Advertiser. An Auburn spokesperson told the publication that Davidson has been “suspended for violation of team rules” after initially participating in the team’s preseason workouts.

Davidson was approached by Peachtree City, Georgia, law enforcement on June 19 after he was seen outside a closed business near a golf cart. Officers found loose marijuana in the golf cart and a THC vape pen in Davidson’s pocket, though an arrest warrant was not issued until July 26 after further testing confirmed the substance inside Davidson’s vape.

He was released July 29 on a $5,000 bond.

The 6-foot-5 and 238-pound Davidson signed with Auburn in 2025 out of Peachtree City’s McIntosh High School. He was a four-star prospect and the No. 12 tight end in his class.

Davidson is the third Auburn football player to be arrested since the start of July. On July 8, linebacker D.J. Barber was arrested on three drug-related charges, including trafficking, and on July 16 Auburn wide receiver Malcolm Simmons was arrested and charged with domestic violence involving strangulation or suffocation.

  • Salvon Ahmed injury update: Hip-drop tackle in practice sidelines Colts RB for 2025 season, per report

Salvon Ahmed injury update: Hip-drop tackle in practice sidelines Colts RB for 2025 season, per report

    Imagn Images

Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed will miss the entire 2025 season after suffering an ankle injury in practice Sunday, according to ESPN. Ahmed went down during a live tackling period after a hip-drop tackle from safety Trey Washington. The NFL banned hip-drop tackles during the 2024 season due to several injuries occurring as a result of the play.

“Never want to see that happen,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said, per ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey’s down in the dumps, and I don’t think he’s trying to do that. We’re just trying to create an edge. … Those [backups] are going to have to tackle come preseason.”

With Ahmed out for the year, the Colts are now signing former Dolphins running back in Nate Noel, per ESPN. Noel will now compete for one of the team’s backup running back spots behind Jonathan Taylor. Fifth-round rookie DJ Giddens, Khalil Herbert and Tyler Goodson are also in the mix for that conversation.

Indianapolis only completed a few live portions of practice since Steichen became the team’s coach in 2024. Steichen recently revealed that he wanted a more active and intense training camp, including tackling.

“I think training camp is where you want to create the edge and the toughness and the identity of your football team, so you have live periods,” Steichen said.

Ahmed signed to the Colts’ practice squad in October 2024 and ultimately inked a reserve/futures contract with the franchise in January. He previously spent four seasons with the Miami Dolphins and racked up 593 yards and five touchdowns in 38 career games.

  • LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier named to Davey O’Brien watchlist

LSU football QB Garrett Nussmeier named to Davey O’Brien watchlist

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier landed on the watchlist for the Davey O’Brien award, announced Thursday.

The trophy is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback. Former Tigers Joe Burrow (2019) and Jayden Daniels (2023) took home the honor in the same seasons they won the Heisman Trophy.

Nussmeier is returning for a second season as the starting quarterback and was already named to the Maxwell Award watchlist. He is under 4,000 yards away from breaking the program’s all-time passing yards mark. Last year, he threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns.

The Lake Charles, LA native will enter his fifth season at his home state school and has new weapons at his disposal thanks to LSU’s work in the transfer portal. Head coach Brian Kelly’s staff brought in the 2025 cycle’s top class, which included a haul of experienced power four wide receivers and tight ends.

Combined with returning talent in pass catchers Aaron Anderson and Chris Hilton along with a solidified starting rotation at offensive line, the Tigers’ offense seems strong with Nussmeier at the helm once again.

  • Marshawn Lynch throws elbow to protect camera from Seahawks RB George Holani in debut as photographer

Marshawn Lynch throws elbow to protect camera from Seahawks RB George Holani in debut as photographer

Seattle Seahawks running back George Holani nearly backed into a photographer during Thursday’s preseason game. But not just any photographer.

It was Seahawks legend Marshawn Lynch manning the sideline with both camera and official NFL vest, and he did what he had to do to protect his camera. As Holani fell toward him, the 39-year-old stuck out his elbow and protected a piece of equipment likely to be quite expensive.

It was a blink-and-miss it cameo, and one that both men came away from just fine.

As for why Lynch was down there, your guess is as good as ours. It might be a tradition for Seattle sports legends to take up photography at this point, as both Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. have caught the bug in retirement.

Randy Johnson Photography, which features the best logo in the business, has taken the Hall of Fame pitcher to a wide array of locales with an emphasis on concerts and wildlife, while Griffey received praise recently for his work at the Masters tournament this year.

It’s also notable the Seahawks were playing the Las Vegas Raiders, one of Lynch’s former teams, who are coached by Pete Carroll, one of Lynch’s former coaches. Lynch popped up at Carroll’s introductory news conference to ask the coach a question, and this might just be an evolution of his media career.

Whatever the reason, the 39-year-old Lynch seemed to be having fun out there.

Lynch has been a busy man in retirement, as both a businessman and media personality. His investments include the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, the USL’s Oakland Roots, a marijuana brand and a hologram start-up, while his television appearances include a gig on Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football,” Season 3 of “Euphoria” and a reality show where celebrities “colonized” Mars. He also hosted a podcast with California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

  • SEC football picks, predictions: Value on LSU, Alabama and Georgia all missing College Football Playoff

SEC football picks, predictions: Value on LSU, Alabama and Georgia all missing College Football Playoff

The SEC has long been the top conference in college football and fielded three College Football Playoff teams last year: Georgia, Texas and Tennessee. Teams like Alabama and Ole Miss fell just short of making the 12-team field. Will one of those five teams top the SEC this year or are there any underdogs to keep in mind? Here, we break down the best college football futures bets for the SEC for the upcoming 2025 college football season. For all of my daily best bets, go to the Inside the Lines blog. You can also get all of the Week 1 college football odds.

    SEC best futures bets

    Best win totals

Ole Miss Over 8.5 wins (-118, FanDuel)

We love Ole Miss’ schedule layout, which we think should get them to at least nine wins. We are buying into Austin Simmons’ limited action last year in which he completed 60% of his passes. It’s important to note that Simmons reclassified and should only be a true freshman this season, so getting experience, albeit limited, last season is important. While Ole Miss won’t be as talented as last year’s team, Lane Kiffin’s team might not need to be as talented in order to go further this season. Ole Miss gets LSU, Florida, and South Carolina at home. If the Rebels can win two out of three of those games, they should have no problem going Over this total. Bet on Ole Miss at FanDuel and get $150 in bonus bets:

Tennessee Under 8.5 wins (-135, Caesars)

Tennessee had an eventful offseason with quarterback Nico Iamaleava transferring to UCLA. While Tennessee has an incredibly easy non-conference schedule, which is why their line is at 8.5, going 9-3 with a brand-new starter that needs to learn a new system will not be an easy task. We would set the line right where it’s at, but this is a fade on a team that returns just 39% of its offensive…

  • 2025 NFL preseason Week 1: Six things to watch for Thursday night from Joe Burrow’s rare start to a kicker

2025 NFL preseason Week 1: Six things to watch for Thursday night from Joe Burrow’s rare start to a kicker

    Getty Images

After getting a small taste of the NFL preseason with the Hall of Fame Game last week, we’re getting an even bigger taste starting on Thursday night, which will kick off the NFL’s first full week off the preseason.

There are only three games on the schedule and we’re going to preview them by pointing out one thing you should be watching out for with each team tonight.

    Colts (-6.5) at Ravens
    7 p.m. ET (NFL Network)

    Fubo (Start watching, save $20!)

Colts: The QB battle is about to get real. The Colts are holding a QB competition between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson and we could see one of those guys take control of things with a big game tonight. Richardson will be getting the start and he’s expected to play more than a quarter, so he’ll get the first crack at proving that he deserves to win the job. Jones is only expected to play about “half a quarter,” but he will be starting Indy’s second preseason game, which will come against Green Bay next week. On Richardson’s end, he has struggled with his accuracy during his time in Indianapolis — he completed just 47.7% of his passes last season — so if he can throw the ball accurately and avoid turnovers, that could be enough to put him in the lead for the job. Ravens: Baltimore has a new kicker for the first time in 13 years. The Ravens drafted a kicker for the first time in franchise history when they selected Tyler Loop back in April. Loop will be replacing one of the best kickers in NFL history in Justin Tucker. Loop has had a solid training camp, but when it comes to kickers, that doesn’t always translate to success in an actual game. The Ravens are a Super Bowl contender this year and they’re going to need a kicker they can trust in big situations……
