  • Chuba Hubbard injury update: Panthers RB to miss Week 5 game vs. Dolphins due to calf issue

Chuba Hubbard injury update: Panthers RB to miss Week 5 game vs. Dolphins due to calf issue

    Getty Images

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard will miss Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, the team said Friday. Hubbard has not practiced this week while dealing with a nagging calf injury that hampered him in Week 4.

Last week, Hubbard was limited in practice due to the calf injury, and he ultimately yielded 16 carries to fellow running backs Rico Dowdle and Trevor Etienne in the Panthers’ blowout loss to the New England Patriots. It sounds like Hubbard has had trouble recovering from the injury, and he will have to sit out against the Dolphins.

The Panthers, 1-3 on the season, are 1.5-point home underdogs to the Dolphins on Sunday at FanDuel.

Through four games this season, Hubbard has turned 53 carries into 217 yards and no touchdowns. He’s also caught 13 passes for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Hubbard asserted himself as Carolina’s lead running back last season with 1,336 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns. That led to a four-year contract extension worth $33.2 million in the offseason.

  • NFL: San Francisco 49ers edge Los Angeles Rams in overtime

NFL: San Francisco 49ers edge Los Angeles Rams in overtime

Eddy Pineiro’s overtime field goal earned the San Francisco 49ers a dramatic 26-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Pineiro’s 41-yard score – his fourth of the game – went over via the inside of the left post with less than six minutes remaining.

Deommodore Lenoir and Marques Sigle then combined to deny Rams running back Kyren Williams on the fourth down as the hosts pushed for a late game-levelling score.

Rams had earlier forced overtime thanks to a 48-yard field goal from kicker Joshua Karty with two seconds left in regulation.

It was a battling win for the 49ers, who were without a host of players through injury, including quarterback Brock Purdy and wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall.

Purdy’s replacement, Mac Jones, overcame a knee injury and arm and leg cramps, completing 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns.

“It came down to who was going to be the toughest team, and I think it was us,” Jones said.

The 49ers, who suffered their first defeat of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, improve to 4-1 and sit top of of the NFC West.

“I can’t say enough about the guys, they were unbelievable,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

“That was a huge character win.”

  • How a fluke injury opened door for OSU football’s Grant Seagren

How a fluke injury opened door for OSU football’s Grant Seagren

STILLWATER — When Oklahoma State football coaches came to Grant Seagren the night before the Oregon game and told him he’d be starting the next day, Seagren was rightfully puzzled.

They told him starting offensive tackle Markell Samuel had suffered a broken foot.

    During a walk-through.

    At the hotel.

“Never seen that,” OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham said. “That was a new one. Broke his foot in a walk-through in a hotel lobby. I didn’t even know it.”

A 6-foot-6, 311-pound redshirt sophomore, Seagren went to work preparing for his first college start in one of the sport’s most intimidating environments.

“It wasn’t as overwhelming as I thought it was gonna be,” Seagren said. “It turns out, football is football at the end of the day.”

Samuel looked ready to be a central figure on the OSU offensive line after transferring from Appalachian State and winning the starting job at left tackle.

But the injury resulted in some shuffling, with redshirt freshman Nuku Mafi moving from right tackle to left, and Seagren stepping in on the right side.

Now, Seagren is set for his fourth start, with the Cowboys facing Arizona at 2 p.m. Saturday in Tucson. According to Pro Football Focus grades, Seagren has been OSU’s second-best offensive lineman this season, behind guard Noah McKinney and just ahead of center Austin Kawecki.

That’s a good sign for a player who had been a tight end in high school and walked on at Nebraska two years ago, not knowing what position he’d play for the Cornhuskers.

“They just said come in and be ready to play whatever,” Seagren said. “The first day, they told me I was going to focus on…

  • Rams vs. 49ers where to watch: Live stream, prediction, pick, odds, spread for ‘Thursday Night Football’

Rams vs. 49ers where to watch: Live stream, prediction, pick, odds, spread for ‘Thursday Night Football’

The NFC West is a crowded race to start the 2025 NFL season, as expected, but two of the teams atop the division are in very different places. Both the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers sport 3-1 records entering Week 5, which they’ll kick off on “Thursday Night Football.” Yet only one is operating with momentum.

The Rams just took care of business against an upstart contender in the Indianapolis Colts, with wide receiver Puka Nacua producing at a record pace as Matthew Stafford’s top target. Sean McVay’s offense now ranks No. 4 in the NFL in terms of yards per game, moving the ball up and down the field with the likes of the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions, all but cementing themselves as a heavyweight in the NFC.

The 49ers, meanwhile, are battling a barrage of injuries, not so unlike some of coach Kyle Shanahan’s toughest seasons atop the staff in San Francisco. Big names like George Kittle and Nick Bosa are sidelined indefinitely, but plenty of others are newly banged up as well, including quarterback Brock Purdy, who aggravated a toe injury in a sloppy Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Are the 49ers set for an uphill battle, hitting the road on a short week? It sure seems that way. But this is still must-see TV considering the implications for the NFC West race. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • College football odds, picks: Miami vs. Florida State, Alabama vs. Vanderbilt, more Week 6 games

College football odds, picks: Miami vs. Florida State, Alabama vs. Vanderbilt, more Week 6 games

Coming off a college football weekend featuring losses by three teams in the AP poll’s top 5, things should settle down a bit in Week 6. Keyword there? Should. Changes across the board within our latest College Football Playoff projection signals conference title races within the Big Ten and SEC leading off what to watch moving forward this fall.

There’s not many matchups this weekend pitting nationally ranked teams, but we found 10 games worthy of mention where prediction value is there for the taking.

Last week’s results: Brad Crawford (7-3 straight, 6-4 ATS); Chris Hummer (4-6, 2-8 ATS). After losing the first two picks of the weekend with Virginia and Arizona State upsets, my wagers settled down for a winning mark at 6-4 overall. Notre Dame hammering Arkansas, Auburn keeping it within the number in College Station and Oregon’s outright victory at Penn State helped.

Season totals: Crawford (36-14 straight, 30-20 ATS); Hummer (36-14; 20-30).

For clarity, these lines were taken from FanDuel Sportsbook on Sept. 28. New users at FanDuel Sportsbook get $300 in bonus bets with a winning $5 wager.

Hummer (Clemson -13.5): These are two of the most disappointing teams in the FBS for different reasons. North Carolina just isn’t living up to the Bill Belichick hype at 2-2 and having been outscored 82-23 against Power Four competition. Clemson, for its part, went from preseason national title contender to a disastrous 1-3. Still, Clemson isn’t a bad team. North Carolina might be. The Tigers win the lines of scrimmage and finally look more like themselves coming out of a bye week. — Clemson 38, North Carolina 20.

Crawford (Clemson -13.5): Is Clemson capable of covering any spread the remainder of the season as a favorite? I have questions….
