  • Overreactions from Giants win over Eagles: Blame Howie Roseman for disaster? Jaxson Dart saved Brian Daboll?

Overreactions from Giants win over Eagles: Blame Howie Roseman for disaster? Jaxson Dart saved Brian Daboll?

The NFL is a funny league, especially when the unpredictable happens. There’s a reason why we all tune in every single week, not knowing what’s going to happen despite the oddsmakers telling you what to expect. The New York Giants had no chance to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, right?

Not only did New York beat Philadelphia, the Giants stomped the Eagles. The Giants were the more physical team for all four quarters in a 34-17 victory, destroying the defending Super Bowl champions. The Eagles are far from that right now, as they have lost two games in five days after a 4-0 start.

The Giants just lost to the New Orleans Saints five days ago, sandwiched in between knocking off the Los Angeles Chargers and Eagles at home over this 11-day stretch. New York is clearly a different team with Jaxson Dart at quarterback, as the Giants went from a laughing stock to a tough out.

There is plenty to take away from the Giants blowout of the Eagles, a party for overreactions. Which overreactions from this game are actually overreactions and which are reality?

Howie Roseman is responsible for this Eagles disaster

    Overreaction or reality: Reality

Roseman set the stage for this team by signing players to one-year deals in an effort to save future cash for his young players. The result was letting Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Mekhi Becton walk in free agency or trade — and not adequately replacing the majority of these players.

The Eagles have just 1.5 sacks from their edge rushers this season, and all are by Za’Darius Smith — who was not on the team in Week 1! Jalyx Hunt has been a non-factor, same with Josh Uche. Azeez Ojulari couldn’t get on the field the first four games.

The CB2 situation is a disaster, as neither Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo have stepped up to replace Slay. The Eagles traded for Jakorian Bennett, but he’s injured at the…

  • Sailgate: How Tennessee’s Vol Navy has become one of college football’s finest traditions

Sailgate: How Tennessee’s Vol Navy has become one of college football’s finest traditions

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — They start sailing up days or even weeks before kickoff, a blaze-orange armada of watercraft packed with beverages, Tennessee regalia and Volunteer fans who have turned a bend in the Tennessee River into one of the finest tailgating — sorry, sailgating — venues in college football. Sure, you could just tailgate on your school’s quad, surrounded by academic buildings … or you could enlist in the Vol Navy.

Every weekend the Vols are in town, massive yachts, tiny bass boats, stuffed-full houseboats and one-sailor dinghies tie up just outside Neyland Stadium, a massive flotilla dedicated to all things Rocky Top. It’s a magnificent tradition, one that’s either an every-game must-do or a one-and-done, depending on how hard you go at it before, during and after the game. If you haven’t yet been, you’re always welcome, long as you’re piloting something seaworthy.

The Vol Navy’s origins: Parking is hell

The Vol Navy’s origins spring from that most relatable of gameday challenges: beating the traffic to the stadium. Neyland is one of only two college football stadiums beside a body of water — Washington’s Husky Stadium, on the shores of Lake Washington, is the other — which makes for a scenic vista but hellish traffic access.

In 1962, George Mooney, the longtime play-by-play man for the Vols in the ‘50s and ‘60s, hit on an innovative idea to get to the stadium: by sea rather than by land.

“All the games back then were at 2:30 in the afternoon,” says Bud Sherrod, a Knoxville insurance executive. “We didn’t have lights on the stadium. So he and a friend of his decided that traffic was such a pain in the butt that they would come up to a game in his little boat, a little runabout with probably a 30-horsepower on the back. And then he joked about it on the air,…

  • Lamar Jackson remains out of practice on Thursday with hamstring injury

Lamar Jackson remains out of practice on Thursday with hamstring injury

Lamar Jackson’s availability for Week 6 is looking more unlikely.

According to multiple reporters on the scene, the Ravens quarterback remains out of practice on Thursday as the club gets ready to play the Rams.

Jackson has not practiced since suffering his hamstring injury during Baltimore’s Week 4 loss to Kansas City.

The quarterback has completed 71.6 percent of his passes for 869 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception so far this season. Cooper Rush is likely to start again in Jackson’s place if Jackson is not healthy enough to play on Sunday.

Linebacker Roquan Smith, cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, and guard Ben Cleveland also were not on the field for practice.

However, cornerback Marlon Humphrey and fullback Patrick Ricard were back on the field for the session.

The Ravens’ full injury report with practice participation levels will be released later on Thursday.

  • College football odds, picks: Oregon vs. Indiana, Michigan vs. USC, more Week 7 games

College football odds, picks: Oregon vs. Indiana, Michigan vs. USC, more Week 7 games

Unbeaten and situated inside the top 10, Indiana and Oregon square off Saturday afternoon at Autzen Stadium with Big Ten title and College Football Playoff implications very much in play. The No. 3 Ducks carry the nation’s longest home winning streak into the matchup with the seventh-ranked Hoosiers, whose explosive offense promises to deliver fireworks in Eugene.

Michigan heads to Los Angeles for a battle with USC, a signature win opportunity for Lincoln Riley coming out of an open date. USC’s expecting a raucous environment inside the Coliseum, to which Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore said this week “it’s sold out because Michigan’s coming.”

We’re picking winners and against the spread plays for those two games and several others across a loaded docket on Saturday.

Last week’s results: Brad Crawford (9-1 straight, 4-6 ATS); Chris Hummer (9-1, 7-3 ATS). Not a good week for yours truly while Hummer cashed several tickets with a great card. Alabama’s backdoor cover on fourth down was disheartening for Vanderbilt bettors and taking Michigan to cover against Wisconsin was a whiff over this way. It’s time to bounce back in Week 7.

Season results: Crawford (45-15 straight, 34-26 ATS); Hummer (45-15; 27-33).

For clarity, these lines were taken from FanDuel Sportsbook on Oct. 5. New users at FanDuel Sportsbook get $300 in bonus bets with a winning $5 wager.

Hummer (Pitt +9.5): If freshman QB Mason Heintschel is going to play like he did in his debut (359 yards, 4 TDs) that line is great value for Pittsburgh. Though, few secondaries Pitt will see this season are as bad as Boston College’s. But I do think Pitt has the pieces on defense to at least limit Florida State’s run game. The Panthers have one of the better run defenses in the…

  • Browns’ Kevin Stefanski not committing to Shedeur Sanders as backup QB following Joe Flacco trade

Browns’ Kevin Stefanski not committing to Shedeur Sanders as backup QB following Joe Flacco trade

Now that quarterback Joe Flacco is a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, Kevin Stefanski has a decision to make about the Cleveland Browns’ depth chart. Will Shedeur Sanders assume the backup role behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, or will Bailey Zappe take the second-string spot after being elevated from the practice squad?

“I’ll let the week play out and make a decision later on that,” Stefanski said Wednesday.

Asked specifically about the idea of promoting Sanders to No. 2 on the depth chart, Stefanski admitted he was still processing the situation because the Flacco deal took him by “surprise.” The Browns coach added he has to keep the long-term development of Sanders, and other players, in mind when making tweaks to the depth chart.

“I always have to be mindful of our players and our players’ development,” Stefanski said. “I want to make sure I’m always doing what’s best for our player, and of course our team. … Like last week, with the change to Dillon, you’ve got to think long and hard about that because these are young players that you’re so invested in their development.”

Joe Flacco trade grades: Browns get rewarded for dumping 40-year-old QB; Bengals take big swing

    Jeff Kerr

Is there something Sanders must prove before he becomes the full-time backup? Stefanski didn’t point to anything specifically and reiterated his comments about player development.

“I wouldn’t say there’s one thing you need to see,” Stefanski said. “In my role, I have to do what’s best for my players and our team. I’m…
