The NFC’s leading rusher did not practice on Wednesday.

Panthers running back Rico Dowdle was held out due to a quad injury. Dowdle is coming off a 25-carry, 130-yard game in last Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Packers and has 735 yards on 131 carries this season.

Head coach Dave Canales said at his press conference that the team is trying to be smart so that Dowdle will be in good shape for their Week 10 game against the Saints.

Guard Chandler Zavala was also out of practice. He returned from a knee injury against the Packers, but left the game after hurting his elbow.

Left guard Damien Lewis (oblique) and outside linebacker Princely Umanmielen (ankle) were full participants. Safety Lathan Ransom (illness) was the only player listed as a limited participant.

Seriously. Twenty-seven players have been traded in season in 2025, the most during a year in the past 25 seasons. Three first-round picks have been dealt to the New York Jets in their blockbuster deals that sent All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts and All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys, making them the only team with multiple in-season trades for first-round picks in the past 25 seasons. The 2025 Jets are also the only two in the last 45 years to trade two former first team All-Pros in the same day, per CBS Sports Research. 

Now that the dust has settled around the league with the trade deadline in the rearview mirror, here’s a look at the 13 major deals that were made ranked in order by magnitude of how they could impact the 2025 season. 

1. Colts acquire CB Sauce Gardner from Jets

Acquired: GardnerTraded: 2026 first-round pick, 2027 first-round pick, WR Adonai Mitchell

The Indianapolis Colts are all in on their 2025 squad that currently sits atop the AFC standings with a 7-2 record through the first nine weeks of the season. Running back Jonathan Taylor is the NFL’s top rusher, and quarterback Daniel Jones is playing at a Pro Bowl-caliber level, which no one could have foreseen before the season kicked off. 

Defensively, Indianapolis needed help. They enter week 10 ranked 26th in pass defense (244.8 passing yards per game allowed), 29th in third down defense (45.7% third down conversion rate allowed) and dead last in passing yards per game allowed outside the numbers (152.2 passing yards per game allowed). Adding a 25-year-old All-Pro in Gardner should help shore up Indianapolis’ greatest weakness. He hasn’t allowed more than two catches to a single receiver in a game this season, and…

The Jets were involved in the two biggest deals ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline and General Manager Darren Mougey held a press conference to discuss the deals after the deadline passed.

Mougey traded cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Cowboys in a pair of trades that brought back a 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick, two 2027 first-round picks, wide receiver AD Mitchell, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith. Mougey said that it is “never easy moving on from any player, let alone guys like Sauce and Quinnen,” but that the team felt they got offers they could not resist.

“You’re set on what these values are, what they’re really worth and these players and what you might be willing to do to part ways with them,” Mougey said. “We got to today and had these offers that we just felt were too good for the team, and we made that with Sauce and Quinnen.”

The Jets signed Gardner to a four-year extension this offseason, but Mougey said it was structured to make sure Gardner could be traded in the future. The expectation was not that it would happen quite so quickly, but the offers from the Colts kept “getting richer and richer in their value.”

At 1-7, the Jets had ample reason to look forward to the future before Tuesday’s trades. Now that they’ve been made, there’s no doubt that the Jets will be doing some major roster construction and their ability to nail that process will determine how these two trades are viewed in the long run.

It was on full display on Monday night that the Dallas defense needs help as the Jacoby Brissett-led Cardinals dropped 27 points in an upset win. Wilson, 29, comes in to be a piece that they hope helps turn the tide. The veteran had fallen out of favor in Cincinnati and requested a trade, so the price wasn’t going to be astronomical and a 2026 seventh rounder is certainly worth seeing if Wilson can return to his 100-plus tackle self with a change of scenery.

Owner Jerry Jones said Monday the Cowboys have a trade in place. He saw in the first half Monday night that one player isn’t going to help his defense.

The Cowboys allowed 190 yards and trail the Cardinals 17-7 at halftime.

Arizona, playing without Kyler Murray again, saw Jacoby Brissett throw a touchdown and run for another. He hit Marvin Harrison Jr. for a 4-yard score and then ran 1 yard for a touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

The Cardinals entered with the 22nd-ranked offense, but the Cowboys trail only the Bengals in total defense.

Arizona scored on three of four possessions, and the only punt they had was blocked by Sam Williams and recovered in the end zone by Marshawn Kneeland. That accounted for all of the Cowboys’ scoring in the first half.

The Cowboys turned it over on downs in the red zone, went three-and-out and lost a fumble by Jake Ferguson. On their final possession, Brandon Aubrey missed a 68-yard field goal that would have tied the NFL record set by Jaguars kicker Cam Little on Sunday.

Brissett was 15-of-22 for 158 yards and a touchdown, with Harrison catching six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Elijah Higgins caught three passes for 30 yards.

The Cowboys had 122 yards, with Dak Prescott going 8-of-16 for 75 yards. He had his ankle twisted on the final play of the half when Calais Campbell landed on it. Prescott had a slight limp leaving for the locker room.

George Pickens has two catches for 28 yards and Ferguson four for 27. Javonte Williams has nine rushes for 42 yards.

The Cowboys have four penalties for 30 yards.
