    USC targeting ex-TCU coach Gary Patterson as defensive coordinator ahead of 2026 season

    Former TCU coach Gary Patterson is USC’s primary target to become the Trojans’ new defensive coordinator, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer report. Patterson, 65, led the TCU program from 2000 to 2021 and most recently worked as a special assistant to Texas coach Steve Sarkisian in 2022 and a consultant at Baylor in 2024

    At USC, Patterson would replace D’Anton Lynn, who left Lincoln Riley’s staff in December for the same position at his alma mater, Penn State. Patterson, known as a defensive guru, went 181-79 at TCU and is the winningest head coach in program history. The Horned Frogs went undefeated and won the Rose Bowl under Patterson in 2010 and just missed out on a College Football Playoff bid in 2014 — the first year of the four-team era. 

    Patterson guided TCU’s transition from Conference USA to the Mountain West and into the Big 12, winning at least a share of the conference crown in each of those leagues. In all, he led the Horned Frogs to 17 bowl games, six top 10 finishes and 11 seasons with double-digit victories before the school relieved him of his duties in October 2021 amid a four-year stretch of uneven play. 

    In November 2023, Patterson said he had an itch to return to the sideline in the future.

    The Seattle Seahawks flattened the San Francisco 49ers in a 41-6 blowout to advance to the NFC Championship Game, but they didn’t come out of this one unscathed.

    Running back Zach Charbonnet left the game in the second quarter after he was tackled short of the marker on 3rd and 2. Charbonnet was slow to get up before walking to the sideline with a left knee injury. In the second half, left tackle Charles Cross, who just came back from a hamstring injury, didn’t return after hurting his foot.

    Mike Macdonald’s post-game injury update sounded positive on Charbonnet at the very least.

    “Optimistic with Charbs,” Macdonald said. “We’ve got to get an image and stuff, but early indications are hopefully it’s okay structurally. But you never know with these things, but he wasn’t able to come back, obviously.”

    Charbonnet was replaced by practice squad elevation Velus Jones Jr, who had the bulk of his carries in garbage time. Kenneth Walker went from sharing carries with Charbonnet like usual to being the unquestioned RB1.

    As for Cross, with the Seahawks up big it didn’t make much sense to bring him back in, but it’s not known what’s ailing him or the severity.

    “Charles was really out of a caution. We were in a position where we didn’t need him to come back, but still we’re going to have to work through it with his foot. I don’t have an indication of what that’s going to look like.”

    Cross was replaced by undrafted rookie Amari Kight, who helped spring Kenneth Walker III on the second of his three touchdowns on the night. It’s still worth paying attention to Cross’ health given his recent injuries and backup Josh Jones not available with a knee injury.

    The Kansas City Chiefs said in a statement Wednesday night that they are aware of domestic violence allegations made by a former girlfriend of receiver Rashee Rice. The statement did not mention Rice by name but was released after the woman — known to be his longtime girlfriend — accused an unnamed former partner of abuse in a social media post.

    “The club is aware of the allegations on social media and is in communication with the National Football League. We have no further comment at this time,” the team said, via the Kansas City Star.

    Dacoda Jones, the mother of Rice’s two children, posted photos to Instagram of herself with a bloody lip, as well as scratches and bruises on her face and body. In the caption of the post, she accuses an unnamed partner of physical abuse that spanned years. She says the two broke up two months ago and alleges that her former partner abused her while she was pregnant, locked her outside in freezing weather and broke the door to her home.

    “I’m so tired of keeping quiet I’m so tired of protecting his image. I’ve been through enough in the span of 8 years and I’ve had ENOUGH! I’ve dealt with abuse for years, me and this man decided to break up a couple months ago and it’s been nothing but hell,” Jones wrote.

    Team owner Jimmy Haslam agreed that “we have a lot of work to do on the roster, particularly on the offensive side of the roster.”

    That neither man crowned any quarterback on their roster as the 2026 leader was telling — not because Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Deshaun Watson have no chance, but because it is clear that none of them has a guarantee.

    A new head coach will arrive in Cleveland soon, after the Browns fired Kevin Stefanski after six seasons featured a 45-56 (.446) regular-season record.

    That coach will have meaningful say on who starts at quarterback for the Browns next season and what will be most highly valued at the position.

    That the Browns will hire an offensive-minded head coach to develop that quarterback is no guarantee: The job will be “to make sure that the offense is run and developed well,” Berry said, “as opposed to necessarily having to be the person that directly does it.”

    But losing, particularly in three- and five-win seasons the last two years, cost Stefanski his job. And the Browns know that finding a lasting quarterback answer is the No. 1 factor that will correlate with turning around their win total.

    No one is saying aloud that Sanders, Gabriel and Watson cannot be the answer. But the organization planted seeds of doubt Monday about the Browns’ answer to the most impactful position in sports.
