    The NFL world was shocked when news broke on Tuesday that former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick did not receive the required vote to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first attempt. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones confirmed the news that the current North Carolina football coach did not receive the 40 out of 50 votes needed to reach the Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot.

    This was Belichick’s first year of eligibility since he had not coached in the NFL since 2023.

    Belichick, who won eight total Super Bowls (two as an assistant with the Giants, six as a head coach with the Patriots), is second all-time among NFL coaches with 333 career wins. That number only trails two-time Super Bowl winner and Hall of Famer Don Shula, who has 347 career wins.

    Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was among the names who spoke out after the repot. Mahomes posted on social that the decision was “insane” and that he doesn’t understand “how this could be possible.” Notably, Mahomes and the Chiefs faced the Patriots in the 2019 AFC Championship Game. New England went on to win that game in overtime, paving the way for Belichick to win his sixth title as a head coach weeks later.

    Jan. 28—FRISCO, Texas — Michael Wortham got his touches at Tuesday’s East-West Shrine Bowl, even if it wasn’t in the passing game. The Montana Grizzlies standout had three kickoff returns for 54 yards and two punt returns for 18 yards for the East All-Stars, who lost 21-17 to the West in a back-and-forth game at the Ford Center. Wortham, an All-American all-purpose player this past season for the 13-2 Grizzlies, was targeted once as a receiver and had no catches. His long kickoff return was 25 yards; he also had a 12-yard punt return. The West’s Mark Gronowski, the former South Dakota State quarterback who spent last season at Iowa, was named offensive MVP after completing 7 of 10 passes for 86 yards and rushing three times for 28 yards. Dom Richardson (Tulsa) who had 57 rushing yards on 10 carries, and Dean Connors (Houston) scored rushing touchdowns for the West. Richardson’s TD won the game with 6 seconds left and came after Aaron Hall (Duke) recovered a fumble — forced by Duke teammate Wesley Williams — in the end zone with 8:23 remaining to put the East up 17-15. Trey Smack (Florida) hit three field goals for the West, including a 57-yarder as time ran out in the first half to put his team ahead 12-8. That came just 26 seconds after the Jalon Daniels (Kansas) scored on a 3-yard run for the East. Only three FCS players besides Wortham were selected for the game. Incarnate World linebacker had five tackles and South Carolina State corner Jarod Washington had two stops for the East. For the West, New Mexico’s Keyshawn James-Newby — who prepped at Helena High and played at Montana Tech and Idaho before playing with the Lobos — was credited with two quarterback hurries. He was also in on a special teams tackle.

During this pre-Super Bowl bye week, Kubiak can only be interviewed by either the Riaders or Cardinals. Essential Sports writer Tony Pauline reported that Kubiak will be speaking with the Cardinals “later in the week.” Pauline said he was told Kubiak would prefer to stay with the Seahawks unless the Cardinals’ offer was “amazing.”

    The Raiders have been interested in Kubiak from the start of the coaching cycle, and so it’s possible the Seahawks will know more about their future at OC as soon as Saturday.

Those are the things that maybe stick out the most.”

    Specifically, Rooney said that McCarthy’s ability to develop the team’s next quarterback “certainly is important to us.” With that in mind, here’s a rundown of Pittsburgh’s possible quarterback options for 2026, starting with the most likely candidates.

    Steelers fans who have been clamoring for Howard to get an opportunity may get their wish. McCarthy a fan of Howard and likes the fact that the Steelers have a young, promising quarterback on their roster.

    It was a was cold, but beautiful day in Mobile, Alabama, an excellent start to the 2026 Senior Bowl. After a harrowing day of travel thanks to Winter Storm Fern messing up flights and causing both of us to have to rebook and adjust on the fly, we were glad to put those headaches behind us and watch some young men in pads have the biggest job interview of their lives.

    Here’s what we saw on the ground at Day 1 of the Senior Bowl.

    Less Steelers representation than normal

    JB: Steelers general manager Omar Khan is usually a mainstay in Mobile during Senior Bowl week, but missed practice today to help introduce his new head coach Mike McCarthy to the media for the first time. Whether or not Khan, Weidl, and McCarthy show up to Mobile at all this week is still up in the air, but given Pittsburgh’s history of taking players who participate at the Senior Bowl I would be shocked to see no major Steelers brass show up.

    RP: Though he is no longer part of the team, we did see former Steelers defensive line coach Karl Dunbar working with the defensive line group in his Steelers hoodie. Dunbar was with the Steelers for eight seasons, and we hope he gets another opportunity in the league.

    The Quarterbacks underwhelm

    JB: It doesn’t look like a good year to need a quarterback, and unfortunately for the Steelers, it seems like that may just be what they need the most. If you were hoping for someone to step up and separate themselves from the rest of the pack in Mobile that certainly did not happen on day one of practice. North Dakota State quarterback Cole Payton made arguably the best throw of the day, turning his hips to make a left-handed throw rolling to his right on a ball that traveled 50 yards in the air.

    RP: I second Joey’s note about the passers. It isn’t a particularly strong class at the position, and that really shows at the Senior Bowl.

    Oregon made a big splash earlier this month, nabbing themselves a Top 5 recruiting class loaded with 5-star talent. But this is modern College Football, and that’s only half the equation.

    After losing a fair amount of players to transfer, many to Tosh Lupoi down at Cal, the Ducks had some gaps to fill. And speaking of gaps, they were hoping for a big filler in Offensive Tackle Jordan Seaton, who finally ended up deciding on LSU.

    Seaton would have been a great cherry on top, but without him, the Ducks still plugged in needed spots fairly well.

    Even without Seaton, Oregon should be good along the offensive line, and the addition of Yale transfer Michael Bennet. Wideout Iverson hooks from UAB helps fill the void left by Malik Benson, and Tight End Markus Dixon may not be the athlete Kenyon Sadiq was (but really, who is?) However, he’ll be a great blocking addition.

    Then, of course, The Ducks made sure their quarterback room would be set for the future with Dylan Raiola coming in from Nebraska to sit behind Dante Moore for a season before taking the reins himself, much like Moore did in 2024, and would have Akili Smith Jr learning behind him.

    Defensively Oregon basically plugged in a similar level talent to replace Dillon Theniman by grabbing Koi Perich from Minnesota.
