  • College football Week 13 overreactions: Ryan Day on short leash, Florida State’s solid CFP credentials

College football Week 13 overreactions: Ryan Day on short leash, Florida State’s solid CFP credentials

The 2023 regular season is over, which means that college football’s “silly season” is fully upon us. Now is the time where programs looking to fire their coach will finally make a call — if they haven’t already — creating a domino effect that will see big names move around the country.

There’s already plenty in motion. Michigan State and Mississippi State made big hires, while other major vacancies like Texas A&M seem to be closing in on a top target. There will be plenty more schools that join the hunt for a new coach over the next week.

Speaking of, a pair of Big 12 schools — Baylor and Houston — finished dismal seasons with a whimper in Week 13. The Bears were shredded through the air in a 34-31 loss to West Virginia, while Houston lost 27-13 to fellow conference newcomer UCF. With a combined record of 7-17 and coaches that are deep into their tenures, it could be time to make a move.

The same could be said for a program like Indiana. The Hoosiers just suffered their third straight losing season under coach Tom Allen, who has been with the program for eight years now. The list of potential vacancies will likely grow with each passing day as athletic departments evaluate a full season of work. Chaos is the only guarantee for this time of year.

Florida State is a CFP team until proven otherwise

By that I mean Florida State should be in the College Football Playoff unless it loses a game. The only chance for that to happen between now and the committee’s final rankings is in the ACC Championship Game against Louisville.

While the Cardinals are a formidable opponent, they’re reeling after a regular-season loss to a Kentucky team that entered the game 6-5. So if Florida State finishes the year 13-0, with non-conference wins…

    What to Know

The Ravens have enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Los Angeles Chargers at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday at SoFi Stadium. The Ravens know how to get points on the board — the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five contests — so hopefully the Chargers like a good challenge.

Last Thursday, the Ravens strolled past the Bengals with points to spare, taking the game 34-20.

Lamar Jackson looked great while leading his team to the win, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns. The Ravens also got help from Odell Beckham Jr. who showed off his sure hands for 116 receiving yards.

Meanwhile, it looks like Los Angeles got the smaller half of the wishbone at Thanksgiving dinner. They fell just short of the Packers by a score of 23-20. The matchup was as close as the oddsmakers predicted, but Los Angeles was the slight favorite coming in.

Despite the defeat, the Chargers got a solid performance out of Justin Herbert, who threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Keenan Allen was another key contributor, picking up 116 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Baltimore is on a roll lately: they’ve won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. As for Los Angeles, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-6.

Social media reacts to Audric Estime scoring game’s first touchdown

There’s no telling what Notre Dame running back Audric Estime will do after the game against Stanford. Will he sit out the bowl game in preparation for the NFL draft? Is he somehow coming back for another season, thus making that question irrelevant? We’ll get the answer to that later, but for now, here he is running 39 yards for the game’s first touchdown, giving the Irish a 7-3 lead:

Appreciate Estime while you still can, Irish fans. He has had a special season and probably should be honored more than he will be. Even with a barren trophy case for this season though, he has been one heck of a bright spot for an offense that always has come out very prepared or not prepared at all.

People took to social media after the touchdown to express their thoughts about it. Here is some of the best of what was tweeted:

  • Aaron Rodgers apparently still clings to pipe dream of playing again this year

Aaron Rodgers apparently still clings to pipe dream of playing again this year

On Tuesday, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tried to characterize his team’s glass as 10-percent full. After Friday’s loss to the Dolphins, which dropped New York to 4-7, it’s maybe five-percent full.

Rodgers apparently still intends to keep trying to return in 2023.

“When we get a doctor’s note that says he’s clear, he’ll be cleared for practice then,” coach Robert Saleh told reporters on Saturday morning.

Saleh had no update as to when that might occur. Last Sunday, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that Rodgers hopes to return to practice on December 2, which is both Rodgers’s 40th birthday and the day before the Jets’ next game, against the Falcons.

It makes no sense for Rodgers to hold out hope for returning in 2023. The better play would be to use the next appearance on his weekly in-season platform with Pat McAfee to say he’s not coming back this year but he is coming back next year, and that everything he and the team do for the rest of the season should be done with the full knowledge that, no matter what happens this year, he’ll be a Jet next year.

Although anything can happen, nothing is currently happening for the Jets. Tim Boyle isn’t the answer. Trevor Siemian can’t even earn a chance to be the answer. And Zach Wilson is only the answer to one specific question: Which quarterback currently on the roster has a less-than-zero-percent chance of being on the team next season?

The sooner the Jets pivot to 2024, the better off they’ll be. The sooner Rodgers abandons his pipe dream about playing in 2023, the sooner they all can pivot to 2024.

  • Texas clinches Big 12 Championship Game berth as No. 7 Longhorns trounce Texas Tech in regular-season finale

Texas clinches Big 12 Championship Game berth as No. 7 Longhorns trounce Texas Tech in regular-season finale

    USATSI

No. 7 Texas will make its first appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game since 2018 after securing its spot with an 57-7 win over Texas Tech on Friday night. The outcome avenged Texas Tech’s upset victory over the Longhorns from a year ago and kept UT’s College Football Playoff aspirations alive for another week.

The Longhorns will play either Oklahoma State or Oklahoma at noon ET next Saturday inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as they seek their first Big 12 title since 2009. If Oklahoma State beats BYU on Saturday, the Longhorns will face the Cowboys for the first time this season. But if Oklahoma State loses, then Texas will get a rematch with rival Oklahoma after the Sooners bested UT 34-30 on Oct. 7.

Either way, it will be a chance for the Longhorns to leave the Big 12 on a triumphant note as they prepare to join the SEC for the 2024 season. Amid conference realignment, Friday night’s victory marked the end of Texas’ annual series with the Red Raiders after the two met for 64 consecutive years.

The in-state affair featured little drama as Texas led 26-7 at halftime and continued pouring on points in the third quarter, making a statement to the CFP Selection Committee. Sophomore running back Jaydon Blue enjoyed a breakout performance with a career-high 127 rushing yards as the Longhorns continue to adjust to life without leading rusher Jonathon Brooks, who was lost for the season during a win at TCU on Nov. 11.

Texas scored in all three phases of the game during the third quarter…

  • Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel once threatened to cut a player who was dancing with his future wife

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel once threatened to cut a player who was dancing with his future wife

    Getty

The star of the NFL’s first-ever “Black Friday” game was Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. The reason, however, had nothing to do with Miami’s 34-13 thumping of the Jets.

During Amazon’s broadcast, play-by-play legend Al Michaels divulged considerable air time to Miami’s second-year head coach. After breaking down McDaniel’s unique wardrobe, Michaels shared a story about how McDaniel met his future wife after threatening to cut a player.

The story dates to 2010 when McDaniel was the running backs coach for the United Football League’s Sacramento Mountain Lions. That season, the team went to a club to celebrate a win over Omaha.

We’ll let Michaels take it from here.

“One of the running backs that he coaches is dancing with a girl, and Mike says, ‘Listen, you’re not dancing with her anymore or you’re not playing with his team next year. So the guy says, ‘What can I do?

“So then McDaniel starts dancing with her. That’s the beginning of the story. Four years later, they’re married. Katie, that’s how he met her.”

Michaels’ story only adds to the legend of McDaniel, a former Yale walk-on receiver whose first taste of the NFL was as a ballboy for the Denver Broncos in the mid-1990s.

4-star ATH Kamron Mikell makes commitment

Four-star class of 2024 athlete Kamron Mikell has committed to the Colorado Buffaloes. Mikell committed to Colorado over Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas A&M.

Kamron Mikell is Colorado’s No. 10 commitment in the class of 2024. The Buffaloes and head coach Deion Sanders, who primarily lean on the transfer portal, have the nation’s No. 60 recruiting class.

Mikell is a senior at Statesboro High School in Statesboro, Georgia. The four-star prospect is the No. 104 recruit in the country and the No. 14 player in Georgia. Mikell is the No. 6 athlete in the country.

Kamron Mikell plays primarily quarterback and defensive back for Statesboro. The elite athlete has excellent speed and acceleration on tape. Mikell is a lefty and makes some good throws, but really flashes as a ball carrier. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete does a good job of maintaining balance through contact.

Mikell is a well-rounded, three-sport athlete. He plays basketball at a high level. Mikell also runs track, where he shows off his elite speed. He has the potential to continue his track career in college.

The Statesboro standout was projected to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs, but surprised quite a few folks with his decision to commit to Colorado. Mikell took an official visit to Athens, Georgia, back in May.

The Georgia Bulldogs offered a scholarship to the class of 2024 prospect after he had an impressive camp back at Georgia in July 2022.

  • What Kyle Shanahan views as ‘ridiculous’ talk could be the difference in 49ers overpowering Eagles

What Kyle Shanahan views as ‘ridiculous’ talk could be the difference in 49ers overpowering Eagles

If Kyle Shanahan is being honest — and this Thanksgiving, he was — he thinks the talk is “ridiculous.”

The San Francisco 49ers head coach doesn’t value categorizing quarterbacks as “elite” or “Super Bowl-caliber,” he explained after a 31-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks improved his team to 8-3.

He doesn’t view playoff success nor quarterback talent in such black-and-white terms, and he doesn’t recommend you do either.

“There [have] been a lot of great quarterbacks who haven’t won Super Bowls,” Shanahan said Thursday night. “And the ones who do, don’t win them on their own. They’ve got to be on a good team and they’ve got to have good defenses and there’s so many things that go into it. So I always kind of hate that conversation.”

The conversation will nonetheless follow the 49ers in the leadup to their next game, a Dec. 3 NFC championship rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles. Because it’s obvious to any NFL fan that San Francisco fields a very good, very successful team this season. It was obvious, too, that the 49ers carried a very good, very successful team to the conference championship game last season.

Then starting quarterback Brock Purdy tore the UCL in his throwing elbow and backup quarterback Josh Johnson suffered a concussion, and rapidly the Eagles overpowered an otherwise powerful 49ers team. Which brings us back to Shanahan’s sermon.

“You’ve got to have a really good football team to talk about even having a chance to get there,” Shanahan said. “And when you have a really good football team, you better have a really good quarterback. And when you do that, you still better have luck with injuries. You’ve still got to play good defense. You’ve got to play better with everything.”

    Against the…
