UCLA coach Chip Kelly shows interest in NFL offensive coordinator jobs with Raiders, Commanders, per reports

    USATSI

UCLA’s Chip Kelly may be eyeing a return to the NFL. The Bruins coach has shown interest in at least two offensive coordinator positions in the league, according to multiple outlets. NFL.com reports that Kelly was interviewed twice by the Las Vegas Raiders before they eventually decided on former Arizona Cardinals and Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury. According to ESPN, Kelly may be a candidate to serve on Dan Quinn’s staff with the Washington Commanders.

Kelly spent four seasons in the NFL, all as a head coach. He was hired by Philadelphia in 2013 and guided the Eagles to a 26-21 record in three seasons, including an NFC East title in 2013. After he was fired by the Eagles, he took the San Francisco 49ers job in 2016. He was let go after just one season after a dismal 2-14 campaign.

Kelly is just 35-34 during this time with UCLA, but 25-13 over the past three years. This past season saw the Bruins finish with an 8-5 record capped off by a blowout win over rival USC and a victory over Boise State in the LA Bowl — the program’s first bowl win since 2014.

Prior to his stint in the NFL, Kelly made a name for himself at Oregon. He compiled a 46-7 record in his four years as the Ducks’ coach, winning three conference titles, reaching the BCS National Championship Game in 2010 and finishing in the top four of the final polls for three straight years (2010-12).

If he does leave for the NFL, Kelly would become the fourth sitting college head coach to leave his job voluntarily since the season ended. Boston College coach Jeff Hafley left his post earlier this week to take the vacant defensive coordinator position with the Green Bay Packers. South Alabama coach Kane Wommack and Buffalo coach Maurice Linguist left their…

  • Commanders hiring Dan Quinn as head coach: Cowboys defensive coordinator remaining in NFC East

Commanders hiring Dan Quinn as head coach: Cowboys defensive coordinator remaining in NFC East

    Getty Images

After much ado, the Washington Commanders have found their new head coach, on Thursday reaching a verbal agreement with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, as CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones reports.

Washington had targeted several up-and-coming coaches in its search to replace Ron Rivera, who was dismissed following the 2023 season, with assistants like Ben Johnson and Bobby Slowik drawing interviews. In the end, new Commanders brass apparently opted for experience with Quinn, 53, who spent the last three seasons running Dallas’ defense.

Quinn previously served as the Atlanta Falcons head coach from 2015-2020, going 43-42 and notably helping the team advance to Super Bowl LI, where the Falcons infamously lost a 28-3 lead to fall to the New England Patriots. He restored his reputation around the NFL by overseeing some of the league’s top-ranked defenses in Dallas, which is fresh off its third straight playoff appearance.

Also well known for overseeing the Seattle Seahawks’ defense under Pete Carroll from 2013-2014, Quinn was widely viewed as a favorite to return to the West Coast, with Carroll stepping out of the head-coaching job this offseason. Seattle recently hired Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, however, leaving Washington as the final vacancy.

Quinn joins a Commanders team that recently welcomed both new ownership and front-office leadership. Josh Harris now oversees the ownership group, while former San Francisco 49ers executive Adam Peters was installed this offseason as the new general manager. The new contingent owns the No. 2 overall pick in April’s 2024 NFL Draft.

  • Boston College coach Jeff Hafley leaving post to become defensive coordinator for Green Bay Packers

Boston College coach Jeff Hafley leaving post to become defensive coordinator for Green Bay Packers

    USATSI

Boston College coach Jeff Hafley will depart his post to take the vacant defensive coordinator position with the Green Bay Packers, the Packers announced Wednesday. Hafley spent the last four seasons with the Eagles and will replace former Packers DC Joe Barry, who was fired earlier this month.

“We are excited to welcome Jeff, his wife, Gina, and their daughters, Hope and Leah, to the Packers and the Green Bay community,” Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said in a statement released by the team. “Jeff has had success at every stop of his coaching career with an impressive track record of developing players at every level. We look forward to him leading our defense”

This will mark Hafley’s second stint in the NFL after serving as a defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers from 2011-18. He spent one season as the Ohio State co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach before he was hired by Boston College.

Boston College reached bowl eligibility in three of Hafley’s four seasons at the helm. The 44-year-old most recently guided the Eagles to a 7-6 record – its most wins since the 2018 season – and ended the year with a win over No. 22 SMU in the Fenway Bowl.

Hafley will be charged with improving a Packers defense that ranked 22nd in points per drive (2.0), 25th in scoring percentage (39%), 20th in yards per play (5.4) and 25th in third down percentage in 2023 (41%).

Hafley is the third sitting college head coach to voluntarily depart for a coordinator position this offseason. South Alabama coach Kane Wommack and…

  • NFL playoff risers (and 1 big faller): Who boosted their fantasy football value for 2024?

NFL playoff risers (and 1 big faller): Who boosted their fantasy football value for 2024?

Isiah Pacheco’s impressive playoff stretch means he’ll go earlier in 2024 fantasy football drafts. (Photo by David Eulitt/Getty Images)

As a general rule — one that applies to any fantasy sport (or human undertaking) — we should try to make decisions based on as much information as can be reasonably gathered. We want more data, not less.

We certainly shouldn’t allow a player’s most recent game to completely reset their value moving forward. Habitually overreacting to small-sample performances is a terrible way to operate as a fantasy manager.

Of course, it’s not as if habitual underreaction is particularly helpful, either. Ideally, you can find a middle ground. We need to be able to recognize true breakouts or declines as they happen, while also accepting that sports are full of noise and false promises.

No matter how you personally tend to operate in your fantasy life, I’m afraid the community at large will definitely continue to exaggerate the importance of single-game performances — particularly spotlight games on the biggest postseason stages.

With this fact in mind, today’s mission is to review a few players who have clearly acquired new coordinates on 2024 fantasy draft boards, based largely on January surges and slides.

Let’s begin with the one player on our list who still has a game ahead of him …

Isiah Pacheco, Kansas City Chiefs 📈

Three weeks ago, someone around here produced a two-round fantasy mock draft that did not include Pacheco. Just an outrageous whiff. Truly scandalous. At the time, Pacheco was in consideration at the end of the second round, but, ultimately, I closed with James Cook, Jalen Hurts and Nico Collins. A regrettable mistake.

Today, swimming in that regret, I’d slot Pacheco in the back half of the first round. He has a firm grip on a high-usage featured role for Kansas City, with receiving volume and goal-line work included. Pacheco has scored at least one TD in each of his last seven games and he’s delivered at…

Ducks see movement in updated 2024 Top 25 rankings from The Athletic

One thing that has become commonplace in the world of college football these days is everyone putting out their way-too-early rankings for the upcoming season as soon as the previous season comes to an end.

What isn’t as common, though, is the top of the football world seeing a major shift in the days and weeks after those rankings come out.

That’s what happened this offseason, though, with legendary coach Nick Saban retiring in early January, leading national championship runner-up coach Kalen DeBoer to leave the Washington Huskies and take the head coaching job for the Alabama Crimson Tide. This then led Arizona Wildcats head coach Jedd Fisch to leave Tucson and head north to Seattle. Meanwhile, Jim Harbaugh announced his departure from Michigan to the NFL, taking over as the new head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers, though that move didn’t cause as much upheaval as the previous trio.

It’s safe to say that there has been a lot of movement since those initial top-25 rankings came out earlier this month. It caused us to update our preseason rankings, and now it’s led The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel to do the same.

Here’s where he had the Oregon Ducks ranked in his updated way-too-early top 25 for the 2024 season:

  • Chiefs unveil uniform choice for 2024 Super Bowl: Here’s why the 49ers might be thrilled with the pick

Chiefs unveil uniform choice for 2024 Super Bowl: Here’s why the 49ers might be thrilled with the pick

As the home team in Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs get to make the first choice on which uniform to wear for the big game this year and it appears they’ve made their decision.

The Chiefs unveiled their uniform choice on Tuesday and they’ve decided to wear their red jersey, which is what they’ve worn in three of their prior four Super Bowls. The Chiefs equipment team was busy on Tuesday sewing the Super Bowl LVIII patch onto each uniform and if you’re wondering what that patch looks like, the team was kind enough to share what it looks like on Patrick Mahomes’ uniform.

The Chiefs will almost certainly be wearing their white pants, and if that happens, you might have deja vu. If they go with that uniform combination, there’s a good chance that both teams will be wearing the same exact combo that they wore back in Super Bowl LIV, a game where Kansas City beat San Francisco 31-20.

This will mark Kansas City’s sixth trip to the NFL’s biggest game and the fourth time they’ll be wearing their red jersey. Here’s how they’ve fared in each jersey color in the big game:

Chiefs in red: 2-1 (Wins over Vikings in Super Bowl IV and 49ers in Super Bowl LIV; loss to Bucs in Super Bowl LV)
Chiefs in white: 1-1 (Win over Eagles last year, loss to Packers in the first Super Bowl)

In last year’s Super Bowl, the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35 while wearing white, which is notable, because the team wearing white has been on a HOT STREAK in the Super Bowl. Over the past 19 years, the team wearing white has gone 16-3, which is why the 49ers might be thrilled that they get to wear their road jersey. That being said, one of those three losses came in Super Bowl LIV when the 49ers were defeated by the Chiefs.

This will be the 49ers eighth time in the NFL’s biggest game and they have a winning record whether they wear their red jersey or white jersey.

    49ers in red: 3-1

  • Tennessee under NCAA investigation related to potential NIL violations across multiple sports

Tennessee under NCAA investigation related to potential NIL violations across multiple sports

The NCAA is investigating Tennessee for what are believed to be alleged major violations related to NIL dealings across multiple sports, sources confirmed to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. The case in football centers around quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who signed a record contract with Spyre Sports Group, Tennessee’s primary collective and a member of the The Collective Association, a trade association of 30-plus collectives across the country. TCA has advocated for a revenue-sharing model for athletes that would not require them to become employees.

Tennessee has not received a formal notice of allegations from the NCAA, but it is common in some cases for the governing body to send a draft notice of preliminary violations being investigated.

The NCAA enforcement staff could charge Tennessee with multiple Level I and Level II violations, according to ESPN. This less than a year after the program was hit with 18 high-level violations due to impermissible recruiting practices which occurred under former coach Jeremy Pruitt.

Already having been placed on probation as a result of the findings from that case, Tennessee could be labeled a “repeat violator” in the NCAA’s eyes, which would mean enhanced penalties. However, the NCAA only applies the repeat violator label if a school lacks “exemplary cooperation.”

The NCAA also has gotten away from handing out postseason bans if they impact current athletes and coaches who have nothing to do with previous cases.

“The NCAA’s allegations are factually untrue and procedurally flawed,” University of Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman wrote in a letter to the NCAA obtained by ESPN. “Moreover, it is intellectually dishonest for the NCAA enforcement staff to pursue infractions cases as if…
