    Offensive standouts

Sims also showed flashes of being a possible starter leading the offense down the field for a second half score.

  • 2024 Clemson football spring game live stream, TV channel, watch online, start time, storylines to follow

2024 Clemson football spring game live stream, TV channel, watch online, start time, storylines to follow

Clemson’s spring practice window culminates this Saturday with the program’s annual spring football game, providing an intriguing peek at a team with high hopes in 2024. The Tigers are trying to make it back to the top of the ACC mountain after finishing tied for sixth in the conference last year.

It was a disappointing result for coach Dabo Swinney, who lost four games for the first time since 2011 and finished with his worst win total as a head coach since 2010. On top of its ACC aspirations, Clemson is also aiming to reintroduce itself on the national stage amid a College Football Playoff dry streak.

Once a mainstay in the national championship picture with six straight playoff appearances from 2015-20, Clemson is going on four years with a CFP berth. But now that the field has expanded to 12 teams, the barrier to entry has lowered tremendously. If Clemson can win the ACC for a second time in three years, it will earn an automatic bid.

Before Clemson can even think about the ACC championship, College Football Playoff berth or even stepping foot on the field for its regular season opener, it has to get through spring practice. Here’s how to watch Clemson’s spring game and some storylines to monitor as the 2024 Tigers give fans a look at what to expect this coming season.

  • Sydney Brown still very optimistic in recovery from torn ACL

Sydney Brown still very optimistic in recovery from torn ACL

Sydney Brown still very optimistic in recovery from torn ACL originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

Just three months after his rookie season in the NFL ended with an ACL tear, Eagles safety Sydney Brown is still feeling extremely optimistic about his recovery.

Brown, 24, tore his ACL in Week 18 against the Giants on Jan. 7 but already feels like he’s ahead of schedule in his rehab.

“I feel amazing. I can start working out for you right now if you want to,” Brown said to NBC10 earlier this week with a smile. “I feel great. I’ve been kind of in and out of Philly. I’ve been working out with the trainers at my home school in Illinois. (Senior athletic trainer) Jerome (Reid) and (VP of sports medicine/head athletic trainer) Tom (Hunkele) and the crew have been working real hard with me. I feel like I’m miles ahead of where I should really be. I will be ready for when the season comes around.”

    Ready for the season opener?

Brown said he can’t guarantee anything but even shortly after the season ended, he was already talking about being ready for the start of his second season. That seems like a lofty goal because of how late in the season he suffered the injury, but a little positivity can go a long way.

Brown spoke at an Eagles Autism Foundation event earlier this week along with his teammate Zech McPhearson. McPhearson tore his Achilles in the preseason so he’s had much longer to heal up. He’ll definitely be ready for the season.

“I’m feeling a lot better,” McPhearson said. “It’s been a long recovery process. Still a little bit to go but I’ll be ready for this upcoming season. That’s what I’m really excited about. Being back on the field with the guys. New year and a new team, so it should be a fun year to watch.”

The Eagles this offseason brought back C.J. Gardner-Johnson as a starting safety and then extended Reed Blankenship through the 2025 season. So it’s not like Brown is going to be handed a starting job when he’s…

  • Class of 2026 edge rusher Zion Elee talks recent Rutgers football

Class of 2026 edge rusher Zion Elee talks recent Rutgers football

In late March, Zion Lee was offered by Rutgers football, adding another Power Five program into a crowded recruitment.

A class of 2026 prospect, Elee plans to visit Rutgers football sometime this month.

Elee is an edge rusher from Joppatowne (Joppa, Maryland). He checks in at 6-foot-5, 225-pound who has a strong offer list that includes Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin among others.

His offer from Rutgers came on a call with head coach Greg Schiano.

“I was excited to receive an offer straight from a head coach. That’s how you know it ain’t a game,” Elee told Rutgers Wire.

“The program is great in my opinion with a nice, building defense and they also bring put a lot of players in the league.”

In late March, Elee took an unofficial visit to Maryland.

Following the offer from Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights are doing well with Elee in his recruitment.

“It’s up there in my top schools for now,” Elee said. “But I haven’t made an official top five, opportunities still rolling in.”

  • Eagles sign Jordan Mailata to contract extension: What it means for future of O-line, DeVonta Smith extension

Eagles sign Jordan Mailata to contract extension: What it means for future of O-line, DeVonta Smith extension

The Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement with Jordan Mailata on a three-year contract extension, the team announced. The extension is for three years and $66 million, giving Mailata an average annual salary of $22 million a year, per CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones.

Mailata will be the fourth-highest-paid tackle in the NFL in terms of average annual salary, trailing Laremy Tunsil ($25 million), Andrew Thomas ($23.5 million) and Trent Williams ($23.01 million). The Eagles will save $400,000 in salary cap space with the move.

Mailata will receive $48 million guaranteed (third highest in NFL) and a $20 million signing bonus. With the three-year extension, Mailata will be under contract with the Eagles until 2028.

Here’s what the Mailata signing means for the Eagles going forward:

Left side of the offensive line together for long time

With the signing of Mailata for three more years, the Eagles have Mailata and left guard Landon Dickerson under contract until the 2028 season. The Eagles signed Dickerson to a four-year, $84 million contract extension just prior to the start of the legal tampering period, setting the stage for the crazy guard market that ensued.

Philadelphia has the highest-paid left guard in the game with Dickerson ($21 million) and the fourth-highest-paid left tackle in Mailata ($22 million). Dickerson is just 25 years old and already has two Pro Bowl appearances on his resume while Mailata just turned 27 and is one of top-10 tackles in football.

The Eagles have both Dickerson and Mailata together for five more seasons, having Mailata until he’s 32 and Dickerson until he’s 30. That’s excellent protection for Jalen Hurts, who is under contract until the 2028 season.

Johnson will be alongside Mailata and Dickerson for at least the next three seasons, as his contract goes until the 2026 season. Johnson’s contract is worth $80.75 million, an average…

  • Marcus Mariota to make history with Commanders as 1st NFL QB to wear No. 0

Marcus Mariota to make history with Commanders as 1st NFL QB to wear No. 0

Quarterback Marcus Mariota is no stranger to making history. (Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports)

Marcus Mariota will have made history before he even touches the field in his first game with the Washington Commanders. He’ll be the first NFL quarterback to ever wear the No. 0.

Mariota signed a one-year deal with the Commanders in free agency. The team announced his number selection, along with their other new additions on Wednesday.

NFL rule changes enacted recently made Mariota’s new number possible. Team owners agreed to amend the rules in March 2023 to allow the No. 0 for the first time in decades. The decision came after a previous adjustment so that defensive and offensive players could choose a single-digit number.

Wide receiver Calvin Ridley was the first player to claim the newly available zero in 2023, a move the Jacksonville Jaguars announced almost immediately after the rule changes were made public. More than 20 players opted to wear the number after him, from running backs to corners and beyond.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons was quick to claim that he would don the number zero at the time, referencing NBA star Gilbert Arenas, who was known as “Agent Zero” during his prime. Parsons ultimately stuck with No. 11.

Mariota, 30, isn’t a stranger to making history. He won the Heisman in 2014, becoming the first Oregon player and the first Hawaii native to win the award. Mariota has played nine seasons in the NFL, which is almost three times the average career length in the league.

For Mariota, switching numbers isn’t new either. He wore No. 8 at Oregon. He continued to wear the number after he was selected with the Tennessee Titans’ No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and when he landed with the Las Vegas Raiders as a backup. He switched to the No. 1 when he joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.

His addition to the Commanders came after he spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he returned to the No. 8. It was an ode to the eight Hawaiian…
