Sean Taylor’s brother, Gabe, joins Commanders rookie minicamp as a tryout

Late Washington Commanders safety Sean Taylor’s younger brother, Gabe Taylor, is attending the team’s rookie camp as a tryout.

The Commanders announced their camp roster on Friday and revealed that the undrafted defensive back will be in Ashburn this weekend. Taylor’s agents shared that he picked Washington over multiple offers because he grew up wanting to play for the team, per ESPN.

Taylor played five seasons at Rice University before entering last month’s NFL Draft. As an Owl, the Miami native tallied 231 tackles and four sacks. He also recorded 190 yards and a touchdown in his extended college career.

“Now he has the chance to make his mark, forge his own path, compete for a roster spot and honor the memory of Sean,” Creed Sports and Entertainment wrote on social media. “Gabe couldn’t be more excited, focused and ready for the opportunity.”

Sean was the fifth pick of the 2004 NFL Draft and played three and a half seasons in Washington as a 2x Pro Bowler before his tragic passing in 2007. Sean died at the age of 24 after being shot by an intruder at his home in Miami. Taylor totaled 12 interceptions, 8 forced fumbles, 305 tackles and 2 sacks over 55 games played in Washington.

  • Nick Saban to co-chair presidential commission on college sports

Nick Saban to co-chair presidential commission on college sports

Ever since announcing his retirement from coaching, former Alabama Crimson Tide head football coach Nick Saban has remained part of the game that he simply dominated for so many years while in Tuscaloosa, most evidently via a role of analyst on ESPN’s weekly show, “College GameDay.”

Well, according to multiple reports, Saban’s role around college football, as well as collegiate athletics overall, could be changing in the near future, as the former long-time Alabama head coach is expected to become co-chair of the presidential commission on college sports, created by President Donald Trump.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Saban will joined by Texas Tech Board chair Cody Campbell to help lead the presidential commission, which will focus on the challenges facing college athletics today.

More details on the commission, as well as Saban’s role in particular, will likely come out in the near future. What is currently known however is that Saban will likely continue to have an impact on the college game moving forward.

  • New Cowboys WR George Pickens ‘grateful’ to play with Dak Prescott, thrilled to ‘work off’ CeeDee Lamb

New Cowboys WR George Pickens ‘grateful’ to play with Dak Prescott, thrilled to ‘work off’ CeeDee Lamb

News of the Pittsburgh Steelers trading 24-year-old wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys broke early Wednesday morning, and believe it or not, Pickens himself found out when it became public on social media.

“It was like my old draft reaction. I found out when everyone else found out,” Pickens said on a conference call on Thursday. “I feel great, I like the mojo here. I like the swag, there’s a lot of new players I’ve been meeting. I feel like they have a good thing going, for sure.”

Pickens said he did not request a trade despite him being mentioned in rumors all offseason, and he himself fanned the flames of those rumors by posting a picture of himself standing with Las Vegas Raiders part owner Tom Brady this offseason.

“This game is just as much a business as it is football. It’s kind of like out of my control,” Pickens said of being traded. “I’m glad to be here in Dallas and able to continue the winning culture that they have.”

He was incredibly productive in three seasons in Pittsburgh, racking up the third-most receiving yards in franchise history in a player’s first three seasons with 2,841. However, the Steelers had an issue with how Pickens carried himself on the field, something that came to a head in Pittsburgh’s 44-38 road win at the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13 last season. Pickens caught three of his six targets from quarterback Russell Wilson for 74 yards and a touchdown that day, but he also picked up two personal foul penalties: a taunting call and an unsportsmanlike conduct call. That led Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin to publicly challenge Pickens to grow up.

“You just have to grow up, man,” Tomlin said that day. “It’s an emotional game. These divisional games are big. He has a target on his back because he’s George. He understands that, but he has to grow up. He has to grow up in a hurry.”

Pickens noted that he “can’t change…

  • Can Nick Saban and a Texas billionaire fix college sports? What we know about their vision

Can Nick Saban and a Texas billionaire fix college sports? What we know about their vision

Dramatic changes in college sports have drawn the attention of the White House, and two prominent men from the world of college football are set to co-chair President Donald Trump’s commission on college athletics—an effort to get the train back on the tracks amid mounting issues in the collegiate model.

It’s too early to know how former Alabama coach Nick Saban and Texas billionaire businessman Cody Campbell will co-lead the commission and who will be on it. As Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s NIL legislative effort launched in 2023 languishes and administrators still await the House settlement’s final approval, patience has long run thin for substantive change in college athletics. One power conference official told CBS Sports they didn’t need any more college sports insiders in a group like this; rather, they wished for outsiders who can bring fresh ideas and aren’t lifers.

“We don’t need a committee to tell us what’s wrong with college sports, we know that,” the official said. “We need this group to cut through bureaucracy and actually get stuff done.”

Saban and Campbell have shared their positions on several pertinent issues recently, including NIL, the transfer portal, conference realignment, multimedia deals and how they would improve an unwieldy collegiate athletics system.

Both also have relationships with the Trump administration. Saban, who won six national titles at Alabama and retired after the 2023 season, bent Trump’s ear last week to discuss college sports legislation during a graduation ceremony at the University of Alabama. Campbell, the chairman of Texas Tech Board of Regents, hosted Vice President JD Vance at a Fort Worth Luncheon in September during the run-up to the presidential election. He’s connected in the…

  • George Pickens acknowledges questions about his maturity after trade to Dallas

George Pickens acknowledges questions about his maturity after trade to Dallas

George Pickens did not deny tales about his immaturity after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded him to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys confirmed Wednesday that they acquired Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick from Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder.

Pickens’ departure from Pittsburgh was paraded by displays of immaturity, which root back to his collegiate days in Georgia. His brash behavior led to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin publicly calling him out this past season.

Speaking on Thursday after the trade, Pickens acknowledged his former coach telling him to “grow up” and insisted that moving to Dallas will help him turn over a new leaf.

“Just taking one day at a time,” the wide receiver said. “I feel like everybody in the world is working on growing, on their bettering of their self. I feel like growth for me is taking a great direction in me coming to the Cowboys.”

Pickens, who the Steelers drafted with the 52nd pick in 2022, made 63 catches for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns in a career-best season in 2023.

After tallying 59 receptions for 900 yards and three touchdowns last season, Tomlin reportedly led the push to get Pickens out of Steel City. During the 2025 NFL Draft, word of Pickens’ availability spread among teams. However, teams polled by The Athletic reportedly laughed at the thought of welcoming Pickens’ attitude into their rosters.

His “bad boy” attitude was shown in different ways over his three years in Pittsburgh, including unsportsmanlike displays, not supporting his teammates and questionable social media behavior.

Among several incidents, Pickens infamously incurred penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct, including fines totaling $20,462 in 2024.

Pickens joins the Cowboys after a 7-10 season as they look to give CeeDee Lamb some help on the receiving end.

  • Ravens to host NFL Draft? City of Baltimore in ‘exploratory phase’ of bidding for future event, per report

Ravens to host NFL Draft? City of Baltimore in ‘exploratory phase’ of bidding for future event, per report

For decades, New York City was the exclusive home to the NFL Draft. More recently, however, the league has decided to take the draft on the road to various cities that are home to NFL franchises, with Green Bay being the latest to host the three-day spectacle. Given the influx of foot traffic and boost to the local economy, every city wants its shot at hosting the NFL Draft, including Baltimore.

As reported by The Baltimore Sun, the Maryland Stadium Authority is exploring the possibility of hosting the draft either in 2029, 2030 or 2031. This comes as Ravens president Sashi Brown noted that the team will “eventually” make a pitch to host the draft.

Baltimore’s pursuit of a future draft does appear to be in the early stages, as Terry Hasseltine, the vice president of the Maryland Stadium Authority’s marketing and communications group, noted that it’s “only in the exploratory phase at this time.”

Pittsburgh is slated to host the NFL Draft next year, while Washington, D.C., recently secured the 2027 NFL Draft, which will be held on the National Mall.

This year, NFL officials announced that a total of 600,000 people attended the NFL Draft in Green Bay, which matched Nashville (2019) for the second-highest attendance in draft history. The record for the highest-attended draft belongs to the City of Detroit, which had 775,000 fans pile into town in 2024.

  • Ducks named ‘team to beat’ for elite 2027 DL

Ducks named ‘team to beat’ for elite 2027 DL

All focus over the past few weeks has been on the 2026 recruiting class for the Oregon Ducks, but behind the scenes, Dan Lanning and his staff have quietly been making a strong push down the road as well.

Earlier this week, Rivals’ recruiting director Adam Gorney gave a breakdown on the recruitment for some of the top players in the 2027 class, and he stated that the Ducks are the “team to beat” for 4-star defensive tackle Kasi Currie, who stands at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds. As a California native from Sierra Canyon, Oregon has been an early name to watch in the recruitment for Currie, who the 247Sports Composite rates as the No. 156 player in the class, and No. 13 defensive lineman.

“Emerging as one of the top 2027 defensive tackles nationally, Oregon has a big early edge for the Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon standout as he’s loved his trips to Eugene and will be back on June 1,” Gorney wrote.

While it is still early in his recruitment, and offers continue to pour in for the fast-rising sophomore, Lanning and his team have put themselves in a good position early on. They will have to battle some other big names down the stretch, though.

“Texas A&M, Tennessee, and USC are three others to watch, and LSU just offered on Tuesday,” Gorney said. “But Oregon is definitely the team to beat.”

Currie was on campus in Eugene for the Ducks’ spring game, and he plans to return on June 1 later this summer.

The Ducks don’t have any commitments in the 2027 class, but Currie would be a great player to kick things off should he give his verbal in the coming months.

  • Report: Packers to sign Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma

Report: Packers to sign Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma

University of Wilfred Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersma went undrafted last month, but the Canadian had a successful tryout at the Packers’ rookie minicamp last weekend.

The Packers are expected to sign Elgersma, Dave Naylor of TSN reports.

Elgersma had an invite to the Bills’ rookie minicamp this weekend but now will not attend.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected Elgersma in the second round of the 2025 Canadian Football League draft last week, the 18th overall pick.

He won this year’s Hec Crighton Trophy as the top football player in U Sports, helping the Golden Hawks advance to the Vanier Cup where they lost to Laval. Elgersma passed for 4,252 yards with 35 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 games this past season. He added seven rushing touchdowns.

He was the first quarterback from a Canadian university to participate in the Senior Bowl.

Malik Willis is the backup to Jordan Love, so Elgersma will compete with Sean Clifford for the No. 3 quarterback.
