    2025 NFL head coach hot seat rankings: These coaches must deliver successful seasons — or risk getting fired

    Life is good for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers these days. They’re once again the betting favorites to win the NFC South and are a dark horse to come out of the NFC this season. With the arrow pointing up as high as it is, it’s no surprise to see the organization lock in its leaders, giving head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Jason Licht contract extensions. While the Bucs solidified their foundation, other clubs aren’t so lucky. 

    A collection of head coaches — for a variety of reasons — could see their seats start to burn up once the 2025 campaign kicks off. Unlike Bowles, their long-term security is not guaranteed, and these coaches will need to not only tread water but turn the tide this season in order to remain at their posts. If they’re unable to do so, they’ll be sent packing. 

    Here are the top five coaches with the hottest seats entering this season.

    5. Sean McDermott

    Sean McDermott’s tenure in Buffalo has largely been a success. Accounting for regular season and postseason, he’s tied for the second-most wins (93) by a head coach in his first eight seasons in NFL history. The Bills have won five-straight division titles and are coming off a 2024 campaign where they reached the AFC Championship (the second appearance in the McDermott era). 

    However, that’s where the success has stopped. Under McDermott, Buffalo has been unable to get over the hump, win the conference and advance to the Super Bowl with the chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. As they’ve been with most other teams in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the main roadblock for Buffalo, which has lost to them in four of its past five playoff…

    The Orlando-area star just announced a July 11 verbal commitment date at the conclusion of all of his official visits. Six programs remain on the list of contenders for Anderson, but it appears as if Auburn and Louisville are emerging as the primary options to consider down the home stretch. Anderson will pledge on that date to honor his little brother’s birthday.

    The emerging 2027 talent, who won defensive back MVP honors at the Rivals Camp Series stop in Atlanta back in May, continues to turn heads with his performances. It has led to a national offer list this offseason, with new tenders from Michigan and Clemson among those commanding attention. The California native, who preps in Alabama, has USC and Oregon high on his list but he is also building relationships with plenty of programs in SEC country like Georgia, Florida and several others. No early decision is in the works.

    Bell is all but down to sticking with Florida State or flipping to Auburn. Several other programs once looked like top contenders to change his mind but the SEC program and the flash of freshmen in the secondary of late has his attention. Bell already has game visits planned with each contender, ironically set to see both take on Alabama during the 2025 season. He is also confident in Florida State’s bounce back in 2025.

    NFL star Justin Tucker has been suspended for the first 10 weeks of the upcoming season, following a slew of allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

    Tucker is a former kicker for the Baltimore Ravens, and received his suspension on Thursday, after being accused of violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

    The 35-year-old became a free agent after the Ravens released him last month in the aftermath of reports that he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by over a dozen massage therapists.

    Allegations against Tucker first emerged in January, when The Baltimore Banner reported that six massage therapists from eight Baltimore-area spas had shared their first-hand accounts with the outlet.

    The outlet reported that the NFL star repeatedly exposed himself to the masseuses, touched two of them with his exposed penis and also several times left what appeared to be ejaculate on the massage table.

    INDIANAPOLIS – The stars came out for the 2025 Rivals Five-Star event at the Indianapolis Colts’ facility this week. Here we break down the top running backs from the event.

    Derrek Cooper

    Cooper came away with positional MVP honors in Indianapolis. The five-star shined in the 1-on-1 portion of Tuesday’s camp, then took it to a different level as the most productive pass-catcher out of the backfield in 7-on-7 play.

    Miami is working toward inking the No. 1 class in the country and intends to keep Cooper in South Florida. Georgia and Ohio State are working feverishly to buck the Canes’ momentum on the recruiting trail.

    Javian Osborne

    Osborne will be playing a lot of football inside the state of Indiana over the next few years. The Texas-based blue-chipper pledged to Notre Dame last month and showcased his three-down skill-set this week at the Rivals Five-Star.

    Osborne was fantastic as a pass-catcher, an area of his game less utilized on Friday nights. The Irish verbal is a three-down back that can bash between the tackles and be a workhorse on early downs and also contribute in the passing game.

    CJ Crowley

    Cowley stood out as one of the backs with the best top-end speed in Indianapolis. The 2027 four-star out of Alabama was smooth in and out of breaks, had soft hands and fantastic wiggle and acceleration with the ball in his hands between various positional drills, 1-on-1 competition and in the 7-on-7 setting.

    Morehead State is set to rename its football stadium to honor program alumnus and Super Bowl champion quarterback Phil Simms. The university announced it will hold a dedication ceremony on Oct. 18 to officially change the facility’s name to Phil Simms Stadium, and the New York Giants legend will be in attendance during the homecoming weekend festivities.

    The Eagles’ 10,000-seat home venue opened in 1964 and is presently named Jayne Stadium, honoring late professor William LeGrande Jayne. The historical naming will remain present when the university installs an honorary plaque inside the stadium entrance.

    “Phil Simms has remained loyal to MSU throughout the years,” said Morehead State athletic director Kelly Wells. “He has given MSU his time, talent, and treasure to MSU since his days as a college athlete. He has visited Morehead during the summers to host summer camps for young athletes and encouraged them to consider MSU. He has mentored MSU coaches and players throughout the years. Most notable, he has hosted numerous fundraising events and personally contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the football program. This recognition is most deserving and long overdue.”

    Simms starred at Morehead State from 1975 to 1978 and closed his college football career with 5,545 passing yards and 32 touchdowns. He earned the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year award in his 1977 senior season and established himself as a premium NFL Draft prospect.

    When the Giants selected Simms at No. 7 overall, he became the first player from an FCS school to come off the board in the first round. He remains the fourth-highest selected player from an FCS program behind only Carson Wentz (No. 2, North Dakota State),…

    The Broncos made Bo Nix the sixth quarterback off the board in the 2024 NFL Draft, but his ranking was a bit higher after his rookie season.

    Nix piloted the Broncos to the playoffs while throwing for 3,775 yards and completing two-thirds of his passes over the course of the regular season. That performance quieted most of the debate about whether Nix would continue playing at a high level as a professional and it sparked some about how good he will get in the coming years.

    Broncos left tackle Garret Bolles isn’t putting a cap on that upside or on how much he enjoys being part of the plan to keep Nix upright in 2025.

    “Bo’s a tremendous football player,” Bolles said on NFL Network. “I’m so grateful I get to protect him and being his blindside protector, giving him all the time in the world. He’s a freak of nature. You look at the numbers that he put up last year, between him and [Jayden] Daniels, those were the two young quarterbacks in the league that’s gonna be very successful, and I have one of them behind me. His demeanor, his composure, his work ethic, just always wanting to get better, his arm talent and just the way he sees it, he has swag, man, he really does.”

    Ending a long playoff drought meant that no one paid much mind to the Broncos bowing out of the playoffs after one game, but they’ll need to keep moving up in order to show real progress in the future. If they do that, Bolles will have plenty of company when it comes to admiring Nix’s talent.

    South Dakota State running back Nate White has died at the age of 20, the program announced Wednesday. A cause of death has not been released. A sophomore, White transferred in from Wisconsin in January after spending two seasons with the Badgers.

    “Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of the loss of Nate White,” South Dakota State coach Dan Jackson said in a statement. “Nate impacted our program with his hard work, determination and overall positive spirit. We grieve with his family and will honor his memory throughout the upcoming season.”

    White did not see any action at Wisconsin and moved from wide receiver to running back during fall camp in 2024. He projected to play a role in the South Dakota State offense this 2025 season.

    “News of Nate White’s tragic passing has been sad and difficult to comprehend for all of our Wisconsin Badger football family,” Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell said in a statement. “We remember Nate as a friend and teammate and we stand in support of Nate’s family and loved ones.”

    White rated as a three-star prospect coming out of Milwaukee (Wisc.) King in the 2023 class. He ranked as the No. 55 running back nationally and No. 1 overall prospect in Wisconsin for that cycle. White signed with Wisconsin over additional known offers from Iowa State, Kansas, Minnesota, Purdue and Vanderbilt.

    On the eve of the NBA Draft, everyone has high hopes. The prospects are hoping to hear their names called early on. The teams are hoping that the players they select will pan out as planned. The fans are hoping that their teams make the right decisions. Everyone is hoping that it will be a night that they remember for a long time.

    It’s the same in every sport, of course. NFL prospects, teams and fans are thinking exactly the same kind of things when the draft rolls around each year. So with that in mind, we wanted to compare some of this year’s top NBA Draft prospects (the top eight in the CBS Sports prospects rankings) to NFL equivalents in recent years. 

    One thing it’s important to remember is that we’re comparing these NBA Draft prospects to the NFL players AS PROSPECTS, so nothing they did once they entered the pros really holds any relevance here. We’re just looking at the combination of traits, strengths and weaknesses and pre-draft storylines to build out a comparison. We’re also limiting the comparison pool to just the most recent 10 NFL Drafts (2016-2025), because otherwise it might take forever to find someone who really fits.

    Flagg is considered a potentially generational type of two-way prospect. He’s been ticketed as a future No. 1 pick for several years due to the seeming likelihood that he becomes an elite player on both sides of the ball. He had a fantastic freshman season at Duke during which he was named the Naismith College Player of the Year (among many other accolades). 

    Hunter, like Flagg, was the consensus No. 1 prospect in his recruiting class due to his special two-way talent. He was considered a future top pick from the moment he stepped on campus, lived up to the lofty expectations placed upon him, won the Heisman Trophy and eventually was selected No. 2 overall.
