The Philadelphia Eagles will try to do the impossible on Sunday: expose a flaw in the seemingly flawless.

Even the greatest usually have some shortcomings in their game that the opposition can expose. Tom Brady was slow. Brett Favre was reckless – in more ways than one. Drew Brees was small. John Elway was accurate, but not always precise.

And then there’s Patrick Mahomes. Five years into his career, there are no imperfections left in his game. As far as quarterbacking goes, he’s conquered it.

On Sunday, he’ll play for a second title with the Kansas City Chiefs. By then, he’ll almost certainly have claimed his second league MVP award – and he could have added a couple more during the years he narrowly missed out. He has never played a road playoff game, and has guided the Chiefs to five straight AFC championship games. As raw output goes, he’s off to a quicker start to his career than Dan Marino, Peyton Manning and Brady.

Most standout athletes turn into myths after they’ve retired– Jordan, Senna, Graff. But at 27, Mahomes has already reached the LeBron zone – one it took James a decade to construct. His excellence – his all-time greatness – is so clear, so obvious, so damn early that it’s in danger of being overlooked.

Related: Are the Eagles so talented that anyone could coach them to the Super Bowl?

What else is there left to say? He has bent the boundaries of what is plausible. He is the most creative, atypical quarterback in league history. He broke the paradigm, proving that tippy-tappy footwork in the pocket was not the only way of doing things – better to combine that footwork with a slinky release and agility that can evade the pass-rush.

Underarm throws, no-look passes, sidearm flicks, crossbody heaves, the impossible feels inevitable with Mahomes at the wheel of the offense.

As he has matured, he has sanded off any rough edges. He used to be reckless. He used to struggle with certain…

  • Wisconsin offers three-star defensive lineman from Tennessee

Wisconsin offers three-star defensive lineman from Tennessee

The Badgers offered Hank Weber, a three-star defensive lineman from Brentwood, Tennessee on Monday. The 6-foot-4, 230 pound athlete still has one more year of high school football at Brentwood Academy before he’d make the jump to the college level as a part of the class of 2024.

Weber has now received 12 Division 1 offers, including Michigan State and Purdue within the Big Ten. With new head coach Luke Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel joining the team this offseason, the Badgers have become an even more attractive location for recruits.

So far for the class of 2024, Wisconsin has yet to reel in a commitment from a defensive player. They have however secured four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer (The Woodlands, Texas), four-star tight end Grant Stec (Algonquin, Illinois) and three-star tight end Robert Booker (Waunakee, Wisconsin).

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is becoming a free agent on March 16, and it seems very unlikely he returns to the 49ers next season. The organization seems to have accepted his potential departure, but legendary 49ers quarterback Joe Montana made it clear he thinks Garoppolo is still be the best option for the team’s offense.

Trey Lance, Brock Purdy and Garoppolo all started games in 2022, a season in which San Francisco finished with a 13-4 regular-season record and reached the NFC Championship game. But in a recent episode of the “Open Mike” podcast, Montana said without hesitation that out of the three of them, Garoppolo would be his top choice.

“I start Jimmy,” Montana said. “He has won a lot of games. I can’t say the same for Trey. You don’t know that from him. I don’t think it’s hard — I think you just start Jimmy.”

Montana, who was inducted ino the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000, is regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. However, San Francisco might not be taking the four-time Super Bowl champion’s advice. His comment comes just a few days after 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said during his team’s end-of-year press conference that Lance and Purdy are the top two options at quarterback going into training camp. Shanahan also said that he doesn’t “see any scenario” in which Garoppolo returns.

Lance was the initial starter in 2022 but suffered an ankle injury that ended his season early. Then Garoppolo broke his foot against the Miami Dolphins in December and missed the rest of the regular season, which led to Purdy taking over.

“He still won a lot of games before he got hurt, right?” Montana…

  • Alabama hires Notre Dame’s Tommy Rees as offensive coordinator to replace Bill O’Brien

Alabama hires Notre Dame’s Tommy Rees as offensive coordinator to replace Bill O’Brien

    USATSI

Nick Saban has hired Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to fill the same role at Alabama, according 247Sports. Rees met with Saban in Tuscaloosa on Thursday during an OC search that has featured a few prominent names.

Rees will take over as the new play-caller for the Crimson Tide after Bill O’Brien left the program this offseason for the same job with the New England Patriots, though O’Brien was not expected to be retained either way. Rees is Saban’s fifth offensive coordinator since Lane Kiffin left to be the FAU coach prior to the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship.

At age 30, Rees is Saban’s youngest coordinator since Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator at LSU in 2002. Rees was Notre Dame’s quarterbacks coach 2017-19 under former coach Brian Kelly and added the offensive coordinator role in 2020. A Notre Dame quarterback from 2010-13, he has never held a full-time assistant coaching role at another program but was an offensive staffer for the San Diego Chargers in 2016.

The Fighting Irish offense thrived under Rees prior to a 2022 season that was hampered by a Week 2 injury to starting quarterback Tyler Buchner. In the other two years under Rees, the Irish averaged at least 6 yards per play. This past year, Rees oversaw an offensive shift from Buchner to Drew Pyne at quarterback while focusing on a ground-based approach.

The news that Rees has been hired by Saban comes after after Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb reportedly turned down the job to…

  • Former Steeler Antonio Brown blames James Harrison for giving him CTE

Former Steeler Antonio Brown blames James Harrison for giving him CTE

Just when we think the saga of former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown cannot get more bizarre, he tops it. This time it came in the form of an Instagram Live video.

Brown said in the video that former teammate James Harrison gave Brown a big hit with what he called an illegal helmet and ever since that day Brown was super aggressive.

“I wanted to tell you guys that I think James Harrison gave me CTE,” Brown said. “James Harrison had an illegal helmet for over 20 years in the NFL. And he hit me one time. And ever since he hit me I’ve been super aggressive. So blame James Harrison for my CTE.”

At this point, it is impossible to know when Brown is joking and when he isn’t. I’m not sure he even knows anymore. Making the claim that Harrison wore an illegal helmet for over 20 years in the NFL is wild, especially since Harrison played in the NFL for 16 seasons.

Texas Tech vs Baylor Game Preview

    Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas Tech pulled that out of nowhere.

It was favored against Iowa State, but it was getting rocked at home at what seemed like an easy Cyclone win, and then …

Texas Tech clawed back, forced overtime, and was able to pull it off in overtime after coming up with a victory over a punchless LSU.

It lost to Baylor the first time 81-74, but it shot well, hit from three, and did everything right but …

    Why Baylor Will Win

Texas Tech didn’t force enough turnovers against Baylor. Actually, it almost didn’t force any – the Bears only turned it over three times.

Baylor has too many ways to score. It’s great from three, it’s decent enough on fast breaks, and it generates enough offensive rebounds to clean up the mistakes.

Texas Tech isn’t good enough on the boards, it’s not strong on the free throw line, and …

    What’s Going To Happen

Baylor won’t collapse like Iowa State did.

Texas Tech will be plucky and hang around for about 30 minutes, but the Bears will start to pull away in the second half. They’ll hit the free throws, find an energy burst for a run of a few key points, and then it’ll start to get away at the end.

  • Tom Brady retires: What’s next for Buccaneers after legendary QB says farewell, top options to fill position

Tom Brady retires: What’s next for Buccaneers after legendary QB says farewell, top options to fill position

Less than a year after signing with them, Tom Brady helped lift the Buccaneers from mediocrity to NFL champions. Now that Brady has officially retired, Tampa Bay once again finds itself in the market for someone to fill the sports’ most importation position.

It’s incredibly far-fetched to think the Buccaneers’ next quarterback will have the same impact Brady had. The Buccaneers surely know that, but that doesn’t mean that Tampa won’t try to find the best available person to succeed the seven-time Super Bowl champion, who in just three seasons added to his long list of career goals by becoming the best quarterback in Buccaneers history.

Blaine Gabbert and 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask are the two remaining quarterbacks on the Buccaneers’ roster. Gabbert, 33, is a journeyman who was good enough to beat out Trask for No. 2 on the depth chart last year. While Gabbert is a solid player, the fact that Trask wasn’t able to supplant him on the depth chart is not a promising sign.

Gabbert is set to be a free agent, but given his likely affordability and Todd Bowles’ glittering praise of him, it seems highly likely that the Buccaneers will re-sign him. Trask will likely be back, too, given he has two years left on his rookie contract.

With two quarterbacks already in tow, Tampa Bay will probably acquire two other quarterbacks. The team could sign a “camp arm” and someone who will compete to be the starting quarterback. But the more likely scenario is Tampa Bay drafting a quarterback and signing a veteran to compete for the starting job.

The Buccaneers have a blueprint for how to replace a Hall of Fame quarterback should they choose to mimic what the Steelers did last year in finding Ben Roethlisberger’s successor. While it wasn’t without some speed bumps, Pittsburgh did ultimately find Roethlisberger’s successor in 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett while also finding a more than…

  • Nick Saban kicks tires on Jeremy Pruitt as Alabama continues search for next defensive coordinator

Nick Saban kicks tires on Jeremy Pruitt as Alabama continues search for next defensive coordinator

Alabama coach Nick Saban has reached out to former Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt regarding the Crimson Tide’s vacant defensive coordinator position, sources tell CBS Sports. It is believed no offer has been made at this time, and Alabama would not speak on Pruitt’s candidacy when contacted for comment.

Sources indicate Pruitt would face long odds to getting hired by the Tide as the subject of an ongoing NCAA investigation. He was fired at Tennessee two years ago as the NCAA levied allegations of 18 Level I violations on the Volunteers. Level I violations are most serious on the NCAA’s scale of infractions.

There has been widespread speculation that Pruitt would be involved in Saban’s search to replace Pete Golding, who left for the same position at Ole Miss earlier this month. Golding was not expected to be retained by Alabama.

Pruitt’s candidacy is questionable as it is unknown whether he would be allowed to accept the job if offered.

SEC Bylaw 19.8.1.2 requires any SEC school that “considers hiring an individual … who has participated in activity that resulted, or may result, in a Level I, Level II, Level III or major infraction” to have its president or chancellor “consult directly with the Commissioner prior to offering employment to the individual.”

While that language does not directly disqualify Pruitt, Alabama would need to consult with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey before making the hire.

“We have a specific bylaw that defines there has to be a consultation,” Sankey told reporters earlier this month. “It’s not an approval process. Our campuses — despite whatever mythology may exist — make their own personnel decisions. But we provide, for any hiring decision, here’s the background from a compliance standpoint.”
