Colts hire Shane Steichen: Indianapolis brings aboard former Eagles OC as next head coach

    Getty Images

The Indianapolis Colts have hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their new head coach, the team made official on Tuesday. The Colts had to wait until after the Super Bowl to announce the deal, due to league rules. Steichen’s Eagles, of course, fell to the Chiefs 38-35 on Sunday.

The Colts spent the weekend slowly informing candidates that they were going in a different direction. Interim head coach Jeff Saturday was considered a leading candidate in the search despite going 1-7 in the role in 2022.

General manager Chris Ballard led the search for the Colts with owner Jim Irsay taking part in some of the process.

The Colts were infamously left at the altar in 2018 when they attempted to hire Josh McDaniels. The now-Raiders head coach pulled out and returned to New England with a new contract, and the Colts had to start the search again. They eventually hired Frank Reich who was let go during the 2022 season.

With Steichen’s departure from Philadelphia, the belief is quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson will become the new offensive coordinator. He had been in high demand around the league, but he wanted to wait and see what happened with Steichen first. The Eagles want to keep their continuity on offense as much as possible.

  • Top Notre Dame offensive coordinator target Andy Ludwig will remain at Utah

Top Notre Dame offensive coordinator target Andy Ludwig will remain at Utah

The Notre Dame offensive coordinator search will continue after news that Utah’s Andy Ludwig has been ruled out due to a buyout. This news was reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel and it comes after a very much publicized visit to South Bend by Ludwig this weekend.

Head coach Marcus Freeman will need to find another play caller who fits what Notre Dame is looking for after it looked like Ludwig was prepared to make the lateral move. That obviously is not the case as a $2.8 million dollar buyout stood in the way from the Irish finding their next offensive coordinator.

The board isn’t clean and the Irish won’t have to start from square one, but on the peripheral, the inability to be able to buyout Ludwig is a very bad look.

  • Super Bowl 2023 rosters by college football conferences, teams: SEC, Oklahoma lead the way

Super Bowl 2023 rosters by college football conferences, teams: SEC, Oklahoma lead the way

Plenty of former college stars will play on the biggest stage in football in Super Bowl LVII, which features the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. One of the most intriguing players in the game is Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. The third-year signal-caller started at Alabama as a true freshman in 2016, was benched in favor of Tua Tagovailoa in the College Football Playoff National Championship the next season, saved the season in the SEC Championship Game in 2018 when Tagovailoa suffered an injury and became a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2019 at Oklahoma. That is a roller-coaster ride of epic proportions.

Patrick Mahomes II, formerly of Texas Tech and MVP of Super Bowl LIV, will take the snaps for the Chiefs in an attempt to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time in his career. The former Red Raiders star has evolved from a star in the “Air Raid” offense in Lubbock, Texas, into one of the most dynamic signal-callers in a generation.

Where did each of this year’s Super Bowl players attend college? We break down every active player below based on school and conference.

LIVE: Follow along with every moment of Super Bowl LVII here.

  • Anatomy of Chiefs’ Super Bowl comeback vs. Eagles: Patrick Mahomes leads second-half surge to win championship

Anatomy of Chiefs’ Super Bowl comeback vs. Eagles: Patrick Mahomes leads second-half surge to win championship

The Kansas City Chiefs are your Super Bowl champions, as they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, 38-35. This affair lived up to the hype. It was the third highest-scoring game in Super Bowl history, and the first in which both teams scored 35 points. The Eagles may have possessed more talent on paper, but Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs played some of the best ball they’ve played all season.

Sunday also tied for the second-largest comeback in Super Bowl history, as the Chiefs were down 10 points at halftime. The Eagles were looking like a well-oiled machine, so the Chiefs were going to have to score on every one of their second-half possessions. That’s exactly what happened.

Below, we will break down the anatomy of Kansas City’s thrilling comeback victory over Philadelphia, in what was one of the best Super Bowls in recent memory.

    Mahomes’ injury

By the time Rihanna took the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show, many were wondering if the game was already over. Not only were the Chiefs trailing, 24-14, but Mahomes was clearly injured. On his final snap of the first half, he…

  • Chiefs top Eagles 38-35 thanks to late-game magic from Mahomes

Chiefs top Eagles 38-35 thanks to late-game magic from Mahomes

On one leg, Patrick Mahomes finished the job. His reward, other than resting an oft-injured ankle this postseason, is a second Lombardi Trophy for the reigning NFL MVP.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, the team’s second title in four seasons. A controversial holding penalty by Eagles cornerback James Bradberry gave the Chiefs a chance to run the clock down and kick a game-winning field goal with eight seconds left, which Harrison Butker nailed from 27 yards.

Mahomes finished 21 of 27 for 182 yards with three touchdowns. Kansas City scored a touchdown on its first three drives of the second half after trailing at halftime 24-14.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was 27 of 37 for 304 yards passing, but was a force on the ground. He rushed for three touchdowns (15 carries, 70 yards) and tied the game at 35 on a two-point conversion with about five minutes left.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (six catches, 81 yards, touchdown) bested his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, on the game’s biggest stage, while Chiefs coach Andy Reid defeated his former team.

Chiefs win Super Bowl 57: Patrick Mahomes and Co. capture second title in four seasons

This is like watching Michael Jordan in his prime. Patrick Mahomes is 27. He’s on a team-friendly contract. In the five seasons he has been starter, the Chiefs have made it at least to the AFC title game. As long as Mahomes is under center, this will be the standard. He won his second Super Bowl MVP days after he won his second league MVP.

Mahomes had his right ankle injury reaggravated late in the second quarter when Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards fell on it as he dragged him to the turf. Ho hum. All Mahomes did after the injury was complete 13 of 14 passes for 93 yards and a pair of scores. As if that wasn’t enough, with 2:55 left to play in a tie game, he outran the Eagles defense on a 26-yard scramble that set up the game-winning field goal.

  • Rivals Rankings Week: Who should be No. 1 in the 2024 Rivals250?

Rivals Rankings Week: Who should be No. 1 in the 2024 Rivals250?

The 2024 rankings will be updated this week for the first time since August and there are plenty of prospects who will enter the national discussion.

Dylan Raiola moved up to the No. 1 in the 2024 Rivals250 in the previous rankings refresh but there are a handful of players who could supplant him. The national recruiting analysts – Clint Cosgrove, Adam Friedman, Adam Gorney, Nick Harris and Ryan Wright – give their takes on who they think is the most likely challenger to Raiola’s seat atop the Rivals250.

    RIVALS RANKINGS WEEK

Sunday: Who should be the No. 1 prospect in the 2024 Rivals250?

Monday: Five-Star Countdown | Meet the new five-stars

    Tuesday: Rivals250 released | Biggest Movers | Gorney’s thoughts

    Wednesday: Offensive position rankings released

    Thursday: Defensive position rankings released

    Friday: State rankings released

    Saturday: Roundtable

    COSGROVE’S VIEW: Williams Nwaneri

From a projection standpoint, Nwaneri could be the biggest challenger to Raiola for No. 1 overall player in the 2024 class. He plays a high-value position, has every physical and athletic attribute you look for in a future No. 1 draft pick and is equally impressive in person as he is on film. You rarely find a young defensive lineman with the twitch, body control, and dominant display of hands at the “raw” stage of their career and I see Nwaneri being a player with generational upside.

    *****

    FRIEDMAN’S VIEW: Colin Simmons

Simmons is a terror off the edge of the defense. He can put his hand in the ground and beat almost any offensive tackle he comes across with either power or speed and he has very advanced hand techniques that allow him to slip into the backfield almost at will. Simmons also has the ability to stand up and play in space. That elite athleticism has made him one of the most heavily recruited prospects in…
