Jonathan Taylor landing spots: Colts still not presented with significant trade offer for star RB, per report

Jonathan Taylor is officially on the clock. The Colts, who recently granted Taylor permission to seek a trade, are giving the star running back until Tuesday’s roster-cut deadline to find a suitable trade partner, according to ESPN. Taylor may be in luck, as the Miami Dolphins are in talks with the Colts about possibly landing Taylor, according to the Miami Herald

Six teams have inquired about Taylor’s availability, per ESPN, with the Dolphins among them.

The Colts had previously been adamant about keeping their former second-round pick, who has been seeking a new contract. They are now reportedly open to dealing Taylor for a first-round pick or a package of picks that equate to as much.

As of early Tuesday, the Colts had “not been presented with a significant offer,” including a first-round proposal, per The Athletic.

Taylor has been in and out of the Colts facility due to medical treatment and a reported personal issue, but team owner Jim Irsay said during Indy’s preseason matchup with the Chicago Bears that the star running back is again back in the fold.

“We’re excited to have Jonathan Taylor back,” Irsay said, via NFL Media. “I know these things are always difficult, I respect any time people are, they’re trying to fight for their position for their families and all those things. And, you know, I’ve been around it so long that I just think the biggest thing that I preach is timing is everything. We’re really looking forward to him to playing his way into being the Jonathan Taylor he was. And we’re really excited to have him and we want to do everything we can to support him and embrace him as a Colt, ’cause he’s a great young man. I can’t say enough about him and his family.

“You never go in with no problems at all,” he continued. “These days you hope you have less contractual problems because the way the CBA is and they work a lot of things through. But you have them and…

  • Blue-chip 2025 OT sets unofficial fall visit with Florida football

Blue-chip 2025 OT sets unofficial fall visit with Florida football

The recruiting grind continues for Florida football despite the start of the season, which lies just a couple of days away. Billy Napier and Co. have been busy preparing their team for the season opener this coming Thursday, but have also kept an eye on the prep prospects in the nation as well.

One of the coveted members of the 2025 recruiting class who has shown a keen interest in the Gators is four-star offensive tackle Matty Augustine out of Greenwich (Connecticut) Brunswick, who recently divulged his fall visit schedule to 247Sports’ Brian Dohn. The 6-foot-7-inch, 290-pound lineman included the Orange and Blue on his itinerary, as well as a trio of other schools.

“I am thinking of going to Wisconsin versus Buffalo, Tennessee versus Florida, Notre Dame versus Ohio State and Michigan versus Ohio State,” he told Dohn.

The Gators are slated to host the Vols in the Swamp for the Southeastern Conference schedule opener on Sept. 16.

Augustine is rated at four stars and ranked No. 340 overall and No. 28 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking rates him at three stars and has him at Nos. 345 and 25, respectively. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Notre Dame on top with an 85.5% chance of signing him, followed by Vanderbilt (3.7%) and Ohio State (2.1%).

  • Under the radar free agent signing Trent Sherfield could play key role in Bills offense

Under the radar free agent signing Trent Sherfield could play key role in Bills offense

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – AUGUST 26: Trent Sherfield #16 of the Buffalo Bills catches against Tyrique Stevenson #29 of the Chicago Bears in the first half a preseason at Soldier Field on August 26, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois.

There was a four-play stretch during the first quarter of Saturday’s preseason finale in Chicago that exemplified exactly why the Buffalo Bills are so high on wide receiver Trent Sherfield.

It was on the second offensive possession, during which Sherfield replaced Stefon Diggs and Kyle Allen took over for Josh Allen, and this is what Sherfield did on the first four plays:

    First-and-10 at the Bills 25, Sherfield ran a crossing route, found a soft spot in the Bears zone and hauled in a 19-yard completion;

    First-and-10 at the 44, Allen made an adjustment to the blocking scheme and motioned Sherfield to line up tight to the formation for a James Cook run. Sherfield took on a linebacker straight up and helped create a gap for a 5-yard gain;

    Second-and-5 at the 49, Sherfield lined up in the slot and when Allen threw a designed swing pass, Cook caught the ball and made his cut behind another good Sherfield block for a gain of 9 yards;

And on first-and-10 from the Bears 42, Sherfield ran a deep route and drew a defensive holding penalty which resulted in an automatic first down.

When Sherfield signed as a free agent back in the spring, he was almost an afterthought with Diggs and Gabe Davis as the starters, Khalil Shakir returning for his second season and speedy Deonte Harty already signed to a more lucrative free agent deal. However, there is now plenty of thought being given to the idea that Sherfield might be the No. 3 receiver in Buffalo’s offense, No. 4 if you count rookie tight end Dalton Kincaid as a receiver.

Trent Sherfield has emerged as a potentially key piece to the Bills offense.

  • Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore suspended for season opener as part of self-imposed penalties

Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore suspended for season opener as part of self-imposed penalties

    USATSI

Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will miss the Wolverines’ Week 1 game vs. East Carolina as part of the university’s self-imposed penalties stemming from NCAA violations within the program. The single-game suspension is tied to the same self-imposed punishment facing coach Jim Harbaugh, who will miss the first three games of the 2023 season due to a Level I violation, along with multiple Level II violations.

An analyst will be promoted to fill Moore’s spot, per Harbaugh, though a name has yet to be announced. Moore will still serve as acting coach during Michigan’s Week 3 game against Bowling Green on Sept. 16.

In all, four assistants will lead the No. 2 Wolverines during Harbaugh’s suspension. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will lead the team against the Pirates in the season opener. Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh will act as the team’s coach in the first half of the Sept. 9 game against UNLV; running backs coach Mike Hart will then take over after halftime. Harbaugh will return to the sidelines against Rutgers on Sept. 23.

“I’ve heard people comment it’s a slap on the wrist,” Harbaugh said Monday of his suspension. “It’s more like a baseball bat to the kneecaps.”

Harbaugh is accused of providing false or misleading information to the NCAA, which is considered a Level I violation. The NCAA initially launched an investigation into alleged Level II violations made by Michigan’s staff during an NCAA-mandated COVID-19 recruiting dead period 2021. Harbaugh is believed to have…

NFL roster cuts tracker 2023: Full list of team-by-team moves, cuts for all 32 clubs before Tuesday deadline

    Getty Images

The 2023 NFL season is just around the corner. Before then, however, teams must finalize their rosters, whittling them down from their offseason allowance of 90 players.

Unlike last season, when teams gradually trimmed their rosters from 85 to 80 and then to 53, there will only be one roster cut deadline this year: Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. ET. That said, there will be plenty of cuts as clubs tweak their personnel and prepare for the final cutdown.

    More on NFL

Here’s an updated tracker of all 32 teams’ roster cuts, keeping in mind that many of these players will end up either claimed by other teams or return on their original teams’ practice squads for 2023.

  • Josh Allen, Tremaine Edmunds share embrace during Bills vs. Bears

Josh Allen, Tremaine Edmunds share embrace during Bills vs. Bears

The Bills are still searching for their Tremaine Edmunds replacement.

That doesn’t mean his former teammates just forgot about him.

Edmunds played the first five years of his NFL career with the Bills.

Among that faction of ex-teammates who haven’t forgotten him is quarterback Josh Allen. The QB shared a nice embrace with Edmunds on the field over the weekend when the Bills visited the Bears.

Both during and after the preseason outing, Allen went out of his way to chat with Edmunds. The first encounter in the clip below is when both took the field in the opening quarter:

Then after the game, Allen made sure to find Edmunds at midfield.

Having both been selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft by the Bills, the two naturally share a large bond. It looks like the mutual respect was certainly there after the final whistle:

  • Projecting Iowa State starters is an exercise in futility, but what the heck …

Projecting Iowa State starters is an exercise in futility, but what the heck …

AMES – We’ll likely see Iowa State’s first football depth chart Tuesday. Analyze it at your own risk, considering depth charts everywhere have about as much credibility as recruit ratings.

In the Cyclones’ instance, don’t be shocked if the starting running back is Cartevious Norton OR Eli Sanders. Ditto the quarterback: Rocco Becht OR J.J. Kohl. Kicker? Jace Gilbert OR Chase Contreraz OR Keegan Shackford.

Based on conversations with some coaches, and on which players have been made available to the media, here’s an unofficially unofficial starting lineup projection (not the entire depth chart) for Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against Northern Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium.

    Quarterback

    (Projected starter in bold)

Who starts at quarterback for Iowa State, true freshman J.J. Kohl (pictured) or redshirt freshman Rocco Becht?

Rocco Becht, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound redshirt freshman has at least played, albeit just three games and 15 pass attempts. True freshman J.J. Kohl will play in as many games as possible, but starting a college rookie in a season-opening game (and a week later against Iowa, even) might be asking a lot.

    Running back

    (Projected starter in bold)

More: Peterson: Iowa State needs tailback Cartevious Norton to stay healthy this season

This is a tossup, so let’s give Cartevious Norton the smidge of a starting edge. He wasn’t totally healthy during the spring, after coming off a hamstring injury, but he’s had a strong fall. Eli Sanders, a 6-foot, 205-pounder, has flashed in camp, too. He had 91 yards on seven carries in the 2022 season finale against TCU, and he played in the spring game. Interestingly, both were available for interviews two weeks ago. Flip a coin.

    Offensive line

    (Projected starters in bold)

Who will join Jarrod Hufford on Iowa State’s starting offensive line?

    The projected starters have 73…

  • Tom Brady returns to the field as a minority owner prior to Raiders-Cowboys game

Tom Brady returns to the field as a minority owner prior to Raiders-Cowboys game

    Getty

Tom Brady’s iconic playing career ended with a playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys in January. Less than eight months later, Brady was in Dallas as a Las Vegas Raiders minority owner.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion enjoyed a pregame stroll on the field that included exchanges with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott and Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs.

Ever the competitor, Brady also had a pregame message for Jimmy Garoppolo and the rest of the Raiders’ quarterbacks.

It appears that Brady is settling into his post-playing life. He would surely enjoy it more if the Raiders were able to end their 40-yard championship drought. The Raiders haven’t won the Super Bowl since Marcus Allen won MVP honors during the silver and black’s drubbing of Washington in Super Bowl XVIII. Brady had a small hand in the Raiders’ title drought; his Patriots beat the Raiders in the 2001 divisional round in a game that is remembered as the infamous “Tuck Rule” game.

The Raiders took a step in the right direction earlier in the day when they came to terms with running back Josh Jacobs on a 1-year, $12 million deal. Along with Jacobs, the Raiders’ roster has several notable players that includes Garoppolo, Jacobs, Davante Adams, Maxx Crosby, Chandler Jones and Marcus Peters.
