Raiders’ Jimmy Garoppolo out vs. Bears with back injury; Josh McDaniels won’t yet name starting QB for Week 7

    USATSI

The Las Vegas Raiders will be without their starting quarterback this weekend. CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed reports that Jimmy Garoppolo has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears due to the back injury he sustained last week.

Garoppolo was taken to the hospital after suffering the injury late in the second quarter against the New England Patriots, but head coach Josh McDaniels said earlier this week that the quarterback had “dodged a big bullet” with the injury. McDaniels did indicate that Garoppolo’s status for Week 7 was uncertain, but said that “the prognosis is a lot better than it otherwise might have been.”

Still, it now appears that Garoppolo will miss his second start of the season. He previously missed the team’s Week 4 loss against the division rival Los Angeles Chargers due to a concussion. Rookie Aidan O’Connell filled in for Garoppolo in that game, completing 24 of 39 passes for 238 yards and an interception.

O’Connell has been inactive for the other five games this season, with veteran Brian Hoyer serving as Garoppolo’s backup. Hoyer stepped in for Garoppolo last week against New England and went 6 of 10 for 102 yards. When asked Friday who would be under center for his club on Sunday, head coach Josh McDaniels elected to keep the decision of Hoyer or O’Connell close to the vest.

“Both guys are having a good week practicing. We’ll see how today goes and then we’re just going to make the right decision,” McDaniels told reporters on Friday. “I think at the end of the day, both of them are going to be ready to go. I have confidence in both of them. The good thing, as we’ve talked…

  • Staff predictions for Tigers’ Week 8 contest vs. Army

Staff predictions for Tigers’ Week 8 contest vs. Army

After playing five SEC games in a row, LSU has a bit of an unconventional matchup in Week 8.

The Tigers will be hosting a service academy in Army, which will mark just the second time LSU has faced a service academy after the two teams squared off in 1931, a game the Black Knights won 20-0.

College football has changed quite a bit since the interwar period, and LSU enters this game as a heavy favorite. Following this matchup, it’s a bye and then a road contest against Alabama that could decide the SEC West.

The Tigers can’t get ahead of themselves, however. Here’s how our staff at LSU Wire sees this weekend’s contest against Army playing out.

    Tyler Nettuno, Site Editor

    Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

Throwing a game against a service academy in the middle of SEC play is certainly a bit awkward, and it would be a much tougher matchup to prepare for if Army was still running a more traditional triple-option attack. It isn’t this fall, and I think that will hurt its ability to control the time of possession in this game as it would like to. No one is slowing down this LSU offense, and a team that doesn’t really scare you with its passing attack seems like a great matchup for a struggling Tigers defense.

    Prediction: LSU 52, Army 10

    Syndication: The Daily Advertiser

LSU caught a break with the schedule this year, getting a nonconference Group of Five game headed into the bye. LSU should be expected to take care of business in this one. Army will play hard, but LSU has the talent to win out. It’s the final chance for the defense to get tuned up before the showdown with Alabama. On the offensive side of things, we know what to expect. LSU is going to put up big numbers. I like LSU to win.

    Prediction: LSU 41, Army 10

  • Vita Vea missing from Bucs practice Thursday

Vita Vea missing from Bucs practice Thursday

Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea’s availability for Sunday’s game against the Falcons may be in doubt.

Vea was listed as a limited participant in practice on Wednesday because of a foot injury he suffered during last Sunday’s loss to the Lions. Reporters at Thursday’s practice noted that Vea was not on the field at all during the open portion of practice.

The Bucs could be playing it cautious in order to get to Sunday with Vea healthy enough to play. Friday’s participation and injury designation will provide more information on that front.

Vea has 19 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles so far this season.

2023 NFL trade deadline: 10 players who need to be dealt to a new team, with Davante Adams headlining

Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year. Who doesn’t love candy, the opportunity to get creative and throw on a fun costume while having a great time with friends? An added bonus of Halloween in 2023 is the NFL trade deadline at 4 p.m. ET! Given that the deadline is just under two weeks away, now is as good a time as ever to take stock of players who need to be moved in order to revive their careers and/or remove themselves from a bad situation.

Here is a look at 10 NFL players who would be better off trading in their current jersey for new one, not as a Halloween costume, but as a full-time swap.

Davante Adams is one of the best wide receivers in football. His 17 receiving touchdowns are the most in the NFL since the start of the 2022 season. He has also been named a First-Team All-Pro in each of the last three seasons. However, his goal isn’t to just be one of the great receivers of today. Adams wants to be known as one of the best wide receivers of all-time and conclude his football journey in Canton, Ohio as a Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinee.

  • Kyle McCord describes going from Penn State recruit to Ohio State commit

Kyle McCord describes going from Penn State recruit to Ohio State commit

Oct. 18—Kyle McCord, Penn State quarterback?

The signal-caller for the Buckeyes said Wednesday night he could have been suiting up for the visiting team Saturday night if things had worked out differently.

“In the recruiting process, they were great,” said McCord, who was a five-star prospect in the class of 2021 at St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia. “They were probably my No. 2 choice, but I think when Coach Day gave me the green light to commit there was really no doubt this was the place to be given their track record.”

McCord was a recruit in the stands in 2018 when Penn State played host to Ohio State for its annual “White Out” game. That turned out to be one of the classic games in the series as Dwayne Haskins Jr. rallied Ohio State from a 12-point deficit in the final eight minutes for a 27-26 win.

“That was really one of Dwayne’s first big games, and seeing how they used him in the offense, I was like, ‘If Ohio State ever recruits me, I think that would definitely be something to consider the way they’re using Dwayne and the way they’re throwing the ball,’” McCord recalled.

Although Urban Meyer was still the head coach of the Buckeyes, that was the first season with Ryan Day coaching quarterbacks and coordinating the offense with Kevin Wilson.

That duo re-energized an offense that relied heavily on running quarterbacks in the Meyer era — and somewhat late in the Jim Tressel era, too — by re-imagining the passing game.

McCord certainly noticed even though he did not have an offer from Ohio State at that time.

“It just opened my eyes to it because I just never thought Ohio State was going to be the school I’d end up at just because of the traditional track record with Braxton and Terrelle Pryor and all that,” McCord said. “It wasn’t really a pocket passing type of offense for the quarterback. Funny enough, a…

  • Chicago Bears injury report: Two new starters hurt

Chicago Bears injury report: Two new starters hurt

Chicago Bears injury report: Two new starters hurt originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The biggest Bears injury news of the day is that Justin Fields remains doubtful to play this week due to his dislocated thumb. Head coach Matt Eberflus says the swelling has gone down on Fields’ thumb which leaves the door open just a crack for Fields to tape the thumb up and start against the Raiders. But Eberflus still hasn’t shut the door on Fields needing surgery– and extended time off– to recover, too.

Beyond QB1, the Bears had plenty of other updates in their first injury report of the week.

Two new starters popped up on the injury report on Wednesday. Pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue was limited with a back injury and right tackle Darnell Wright was limited with a shoulder injury. The Bears signed Ngakoue over the summer to boost the pass rush at defensive end. Ngakoue has two sacks and four TFLs this season. Meanwhile, Wright has been the only fixture on the Bears offensive line this season. Up to this point, he’s been the only man to start every game at the same position on the OL. There have been moments when Wright struggled against premiere pass rushers or when he missed assignments, as would be expected for any rookie tackle. But for the most part Wright has been solid in both run blocking and pass protection.

The Bears are still without their top two running backs, Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson. Herbert (ankle) and Johnson (concussion) did not play against the Vikings, so D’Onta Foreman and Darrynton Evans carried the load out of the backfield with a couple of Velus Jones carries sprinkled into the mix. Johnson still has not cleared the concussion protocol and Herbert is on injured reserve. The Bears did get running back Travis Homer back at practice, which will primarily give the team a boost on special teams.

Other players on the injury report include Eddie Jackson who was limited with the foot injury that has bothered him throughout the year….
