Fantasy Football Week 16: Care/Don’t Care

    Five things I care about

    Cowboys’ pass protection

This was always going to be a tough matchup for the Dallas offense. The Dolphins defense ranked first in success rate allowed since Jalen Ramsey returned to the lineup. The Cowboys have struggled against good teams on the road all season. There were plenty of reasons for Week 16’s end result but the most significant factor in the loss had to leave Dallas feeling troubled going forward.

Despite missing its best pass rusher, Miami was able to get pressure on Dak Prescott early and often Sunday afternoon. To his credit, Prescott handled the heat well. He was able to escape rushers often and got rid of the ball in the face of what would have been devastating sacks. High-quality quarterbacks can make it work in these types of adverse conditions and to his credit, outside of a few low moments, Prescott generally put the team in a good position.

The Cowboys came into this game without starting left tackle Tyron Smith and Zack Martin nursing a thigh injury that cost him most of Week 15’s loss in Buffalo. The left tackle spot was particularly troublesome. Chuma Edoga let up a ton of blindside pressure and routinely forced Prescott off his spot.

Pressure is bad for any offense but for this unit in particular, it is a huge stumbling block. The West Coast offense is predicated on timing and rhythm. Prescott has played his best football when he can hit the top of his drop and push the ball to open receivers on time. When he has pressure in his face, it ruins the whole plan. Even when Prescott made plays in this game, it came on tight-window throws, showing that the route timing was disrupted.

The Cowboys have the potential to be a great offense but the way they’re set up it takes just a small grain of sand to grind the gears to a stop. Look no further if you’re searching for a reason why this team can’t deal with…

  • Eastern Michigan-South Alabama brawl: Postgame chaos erupts after sucker punch at 68 Ventures Bowl

Eastern Michigan-South Alabama brawl: Postgame chaos erupts after sucker punch at 68 Ventures Bowl

    Getty Images

Tensions ran high following South Alabama’s 59-10 win over Eastern Michigan the 68 Ventures Bowl Saturday when a postgame fight erupted after a sucker punch was thrown.

Eastern Michigan defensive back Korey Hernandez rushed to South Alabama’s side of the field while the team was facing the marching band and singing the school’s alma mater. To the shock of most everyone, he sucker punched an opposing player. Multiple members of both teams were involved in the extracurricular activities before the fight was eventually broken up.

South Alabama players and coaches were able to come back onto the field minutes later for the trophy presentation.

“I didn’t see things when they happened,” Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton said postgame on the incident. “But I definitely saw the intensity of what had just happened. We had a really good, long talk in the locker room afterwards. We want to be first-class all the time, no matter the circumstances, no matter what the scoreboard is, no matter what other factors, people, whatever are involved. And anything short of being first-class is not living up to the standard that we have in Eastern Michigan football.”

South Alabama finished with a 627-150 edge in total yards and allowed its lone touchdown of the game to Eastern Michigan in garbage time to win its first bowl game in program history. Coming into the weekend, the Jaguars had an 0-3 all-time record in bowl games.

“We will certainly take ownership of our part,” South Alabama coach Kane Wommack said. “We will look and find out exactly what happened. I couldn’t…

Overreactions, reality checks for NFL Week 16: Mason Rudolph start for Steelers rest of year? Bengals done?

Week 16 in the NFL got off to an early start with three games played before a short Christmas Eve slate. Fourteen teams will play on the national television stage thanks to the Christmas holiday, with plenty of games having an effect on the AFC and NFC playoff races.

The Saturday slate featured the Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills heading to southern California to face the Los Angeles Chargers. Three of the four teams will be shaking up the AFC playoff picture, starting with Pittsburgh’s win over Cincinnati.

With the Saturday slate of games going on, it’s never too early for overreactions to either game.

Mason Rudolph should start for the Steelers for rest of year

    Overreaction or Reality: Overreaction

The Steelers decided to go with Rudolph over Mitchell Trubisky as the starting quarterback this week while Kenny Pickett has been out with an ankle injury. Naturally, Rudolph goes 17 of 27 for 290 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions (124.0 rating) as the Steelers score 34 points in a blowout victory over the Bengals.

The 34 points for the Steelers were the most points in a game since Week 11 of the 2021 season and the Steelers haven’t scored 30 points in a win since the 2020 season. Pittsburgh averaged 13.7 points per game and 265.7 yards per game in its previous three games, all losses. The Steelers put up 34 points and 397 yards against the Bengals.

George Pickens actually looked like an elite receiver, catching four passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns — both touchdown catches over 60 yards. Rudolph had something to do with that right?

The Steelers aren’t going to bench Pickett when he returns, but they can “make sure he’s 100%.” Perhaps Rudolph gets another start while they figure things out.

    Bengals playoff chances are dashed

Former UTSA edge Trey Moore commits to Texas

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are riding a wave of momentum.

The Longhorns flipped a few recruits over the last month to add to their already stacked 2024 class. On top of that, Texas added Houston wide receiver Matthew Golden and Clemson defensive back Andrew Mukuba via the transfer portal.

On Saturday, Texas kept the momentum rolling with a commitment from former UTSA edge Trey Moore. The elite player reportedly chose Texas over Alabama, LSU and others.

In 2023, Moore recorded the second most sacks in the country with 14.5. He also added on 17.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one interception. According to 247Sports, Moore was rated the No. 3 edge in the transfer portal and No. 12 overall player.

  • Zack Moss downgraded to out for Week 16

Zack Moss downgraded to out for Week 16

The Colts will have running back Jonathan Taylor back for Sunday’s game against the Falcons, but they won’t have their other key running back.

Zack Moss has been downgraded from questionable to out with his forearm injury.

The move is not entirely a surprise, as Moss did not practice all week.

In 13 games with eight starts, Moss leads the team with 764 yards rushing and five rushing TDs. He’s also caught 27 passes for 192 yards with two touchdowns this season.

Taylor is returning from a thumb injury. In seven games with five starts this year, he’s recorded 414 yards rushing with four touchdowns along with 16 catches for 137 yards with one TD.

Additionally, Indianapolis has elevated receiver Ethan Fern and offensive tackle Jared Veldheer from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s contest. Veldheer, 36, is set to make his first appearance since playing for the Colts in 2020.

Georgia Tech vs. UCF live stream, watch online, TV channel, prediction, pick, Gasparilla Bowl odds, spread

UCF stays close to home to face off against Georgia Tech in a battle of plucky upstarts in the Gasparilla Bowl, played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Knights managed to push through and become the only Big 12 newcomer to reach bowl eligibility after winning three of their final four games. After dropping a heartbreaking 24-23 loss to Texas Tech on Nov. 18, running back RJ Harvey rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-13 win over Houston to reach the postseason.

The Yellow Jackets had an even crazier path to bowl eligibility, upsetting previously ranked Miami and North Carolina and giving No. 1 Georgia a scare late. Despite playing one of the nation’s top rushing defenses, GT ran for more than 200 yards against the rival Bulldogs in a 31-23 loss. The bowl game is a perfect opportunity to build momentum for next season.

Georgia Tech and UCF played each other twice in the past four seasons. The Knights beat the Yellow Jackets in both matchups, including a 27-10 victory in Orlando in 2022. While not every player has announced, UCF and Georgia Tech have fewer than five major contributors expected to opt out of the bowl game. UCF cornerback Corey Thornton is the biggest loss after ranking top 10 on the team in tackles. However, the vast majority of playmakers should participate in the bowl game.

    Who’s Playing

Buffalo Bills @ Los Angeles Chargers

    How To Watch

When: Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 8 p.m. ETWhere: SoFi Stadium — Inglewood, CaliforniaTV: PeacockFollow: CBS Sports App

    What to Know

The Chargers will be in front of their home fans on Saturday, but a look at the spread shows they might need that home-field advantage. They will be home for the holidays to greet the Buffalo Bills at 8:00 p.m. ET at SoFi Stadium. The Chargers might want some stickum for this matchup since the team gave up five turnovers on Thursday.

Los Angeles gave up the first points and the most points. There’s no need to mince words: the Chargers lost to the Raiders, and the Chargers lost bad. The score wound up at 63-21. Los Angeles was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 42-0.

Despite the defeat, the Chargers had strong showings from Easton Stick, who threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns while completing 71.9% of his passes, and Joshua Palmer, who picked up 113 receiving yards and a touchdown. Palmer’s biggest highlight was a 79-yard reception that he brought in for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Buffalo can now show off five landslide victories after their most recent contest on Sunday. They put the hurt on the Cowboys with a sharp 31-10 win. The oddsmakers were on Buffalo’s side, but they didn’t give the squad enough credit as the margin was unexpectedly wide.

Among those leading the charge was James Cook, who rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.2 yards per carry, and also picked up 42 receiving yards. He also notched 25 carries for the first time this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Josh Allen, who rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown.

Los Angeles has been struggling recently, as they’ve lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9…

  • Badgers safety returning for another season

Badgers safety returning for another season

The Badgers football team is gearing up for the ReliaQuest Bowl against LSU on January 1 in Tampa, Florida, and safety Hunter Wohler announced Thursday that the bowl game will not be his final contest with Wisconsin.

The safety will be back in Madison for his senior season in 2024 to address some “unfinished business” with the Badgers. Wohler became a superstar for Wisconsin this year, recording 113 tackles (73 solo), including a sack, while also intercepting two passses and deflecting four others over the team’s 12 regular season contests.

His return in 2024 provides the Badgers with one of the more formidable pairs in the secondary, as cornerback Ricardo Hallman (six interceptions in 2023) will also be back.

Here is Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler’s response when I asked if he would be returning for his senior season rather than pursuing the NFL. He also said he received feedback on his pro prospects from Luke Fickell. Wohler is all-in on the Badgers. pic.twitter.com/iVJipvvoGM
