Shilo Sanders files for bankruptcy: Colorado DB’s debt stems from allegedly assaulting security guard in 2015

Colorado defensive back Shilo Sanders, son of head coach Deion Sanders, is $11 million in debt and filed for bankruptcy in October 2023, according to USA Today.  The petition for relief — which was filed under Chapter 7 in Colorado’s Bankruptcy Code — states Sanders is on the hook for $11.3 million stemming from a March 2022 civil trial in Texas. The initial filing noted Sanders owns $478,000 in assets, though an amendment in December brought that number down to $320,000.

The filing obtained by USA Today states that Sanders brought in a gross income of $193,713 during the 2023 fiscal year. That number is actually down from the $216,950 he netted while playing at Jackson State in 2022. A large portion of his income can be attributed to name, image and likeness deals — Sanders reported a Mercedes valued at almost $76,000 among his assets — but it’s a far cry from some of the NIL projections that external metrics have placed on the Colorado star.

Here’s a look at the lengthy legal battle that brought Sanders to this point and what his bankruptcy filing could mean.

Legal troubles stem from a high school incident

John Darjean, a former security guard at Triple A Academy in Dallas, Texas, filed a lawsuit against Sanders and his family in June 2016. The suit alleges that in 2015, Sanders — who was 15 at the time — assaulted Darjean after Sanders refused Darjean’s request to turn over his cellphone.

Court documents obtained by Westword claim Sanders “slammed his elbow into Darjean’s chest and continued to hit Darjean after he fell. Darjean was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.”

Darjean alleges he “sustained severe and permanent injuries, including a broken neck, damage to his cervical spine, permanent neurological injuries…

  • 49ers QBs compare, contrast NFL journeys at Dwight Clark Legacy Series

49ers QBs compare, contrast NFL journeys at Dwight Clark Legacy Series

49ers QBs compare, contrast NFL journeys at Dwight Clark Legacy Series originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Four Pro Bowl quarterbacks, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young, recently gathered on stage to share stories, life lessons and raise money for former 49ers in times of need.

Young, Jeff Garcia, Alex Smith and Brock Purdy took part in a panel discussion as part of the Dwight Clark Legacy Event, which will air Tuesday night on NBC Sports Bay Area immediately following “Giants Postgame Live.”

The event raised more than $200,000 for the Golden Heart Fund, which supplies a wide variety of benefits and services for former 49ers players and their families.

Young, Garcia and Smith earned multiple Pro Bowl honors throughout their careers, while Purdy was named the NFC Pro Bowl starter last season after leading the NFL in passer rating (113.0) and yards per pass attempt (9.6).

“We’re up here — us three — because we were able to create longevity in something that very few are able to create and experience and have the success that we’ve had,” Garcia said. “And now Brock is scratching the surface. And he’s so much further ahead than probably we were at this same time frame.”

Each individual spoke about the challenges of navigating life as the starting quarterback for the 49ers. Garcia had the almost impossible assignment of following Young and four-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Montana.

Then, along came Alex Smith as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

“There had never been a franchise that had a Joe and Steve,” Smith said. “That had never happened. And then you throw in Jeff. He set the franchise record for yards, so he carried it on. All of a sudden to be the No. 1 overall pick as a 20-year-old. Those are things I never dealt with. I had one college scholarship offer.

“I felt like I had to be Joe Montana, Steve Young and Peyton Manning as the No. 1 overall pick for the San Francisco 49ers. And it was a lot. I…

  • Big Ten football transfers: New Ohio State, Oregon stars poised to make immediate impact in 2024 season

Big Ten football transfers: New Ohio State, Oregon stars poised to make immediate impact in 2024 season

Remember the days when you followed high school football recruiting? Breathlessly anticipating the same quotes from different players about how much they enjoyed their official visit and how the coaching staff made them feel like they were family. Remember anxiously awaiting the announcement of a commitment and then white-knuckling it until National Signing Day, hoping nothing changed before they signed on the dotted line?

Those days feel like a long time ago, don’t they? Well, they weren’t. It was only a few years ago, but it speaks to the impact of the transfer portal that it feels like The Stone Age. These days, we don’t spend nearly as much time worried about what a high school junior is doing; we’re far more interested in the disgruntled player looking for more playing time or the ascendant superstar looking to move up a level (both on the field and in the checking account).

Transfers dominate the sport now. Five of the last seven Heisman Trophy winners were transfers. Instead of waiting for the four-star sophomore to develop into a reliable starter, title contenders not named Clemson fill gaps in the roster through the portal. Sometimes, they find another ruby to stick on an already jewel-adorned, gold-plated crown.

The portal means you can turn things around in one offseason, making it one of the most important roster-building tools available. Every season, well-known faces show up in new places, and in top conferences like the Big Ten and SEC, there is never a shortage of big-name newcomers.

As we head into the summer, here’s a look at the Big Ten transfers poised to make the most significant impact in the 2024 season.

Michigan State isn’t considered a threat in the Big Ten after finishing 4-8 last year, but if there’s one…

  • 49ers signing Logan Thomas: How veteran TE will fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense after reportedly joining team

49ers signing Logan Thomas: How veteran TE will fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense after reportedly joining team

    Getty Images

The San Francisco 49ers have gotten some much-needed depth at tight behind behind George Kittle. The team is signing longtime Commanders tight end Logan Thomas, according to NFL Media. Thomas has been available since Washington released him in March.

Thomas, 32, is coming off his best season since 2020. He caught 55 passes for 496 yards and four touchdowns. Thomas played an integral role in the Commanders’ surprising NFC East title run back in 2020. He has 219 receptions for 2,002 yards and 16 touchdowns while playing for the Cardinals, Bills and Commanders.

As noted above, Thomas provides valuable depth behind Kittle, who last year was selected to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time over the past six years. Brayden Willis, a 2023 seventh-round pick who is currently just behind Kittle on the projected depth chart, did not catch a pass during his rookie season. The same can be said of fellow second-year…

  • Former Wisconsin tailback Montee Ball on ballot for 2025 College Football Hall of Fame class

Former Wisconsin tailback Montee Ball on ballot for 2025 College Football Hall of Fame class

MADISON – More than a decade after he played his final football game at Wisconsin, Montee Ball still holds several prestigious program records.

Ball, whose last college game was the 2013 Rose Bowl, is UW’s leader in all-time touchdowns (83), touchdowns in a season (39), all-time rushing touchdowns (77), rushing touchdowns in a season (33), points in a season (236) and all-time points (500).

His rushing total of 5,140 yards from 2009-12 is the No. 3 mark in program history, behind only Ron Dayne (7,125) and Jonathan Taylor (6,174).

On Monday, Ball was among 77 players on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame’s 2025 class.

The 2025 class will be announced sometime early next year. It will be officially inducted on Dec. 9, 2025, in Las Vegas, during the 67th National Football Foundation annual awards dinner.

Ball was also nominated for the 2024 class.

Montee Ball struggled early at Wisconsin before blossoming

Ball, 33, was not an immediate star when he arrived at UW in 2009 from Timberland High School in Missouri.

He played in only nine games that season and finished with 391 yards and four touchdowns. John Clay led the team in rushing with 1,517 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Ball was buried on the depth chart early in the 2010 season, behind Clay and freshman James White.

After not getting a carry in UW’s 31-18 victory over No. 1 Ohio State on Oct. 16, Ball contemplated asking to switch positions.

However, he stayed at tailback and got his chance when Clay and White suffered injuries the next week at Iowa.

He caught five passes for 41 yards and scored the decisive touchdown on an 8-yard run with 1 minute 6 seconds left in UW’s 31-30 victory.

That trio finished the season with a combined 3,060 rushing yards and 46 rushing touchdowns.

Clay led the way with 1,052 yards and 14 touchdowns. White added 1,012 yards and 14…

ESPN projection system gives 49ers best odds to win Super Bowl 59

ESPN projection system gives 49ers best odds to win Super Bowl 59 originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The 49ers will win their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2025 — according to an NFL projection system, that is.

In a recent article, Seth Walder of ESPN’s analytics department revealed that ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) predicts San Francisco has the best odds to win Super Bowl LIX over rival contenders.

In a recent article, ESPN’s Seth Walder department revealed that Football Power Index (FPI) predicts San Francisco has the best odds to win Super Bowl LIX over rival contenders.

Here are, in order of highest percentages, the five favorites to win it all next season:

49ers (16 percent), Kansas City Chiefs (12 percent), Detroit Lions (10 percent), Dallas Cowboys (nine percent) and Baltimore Ravens (eight percent).

Of course “Cowboys” doesn’t pair well with anything close to “Super Bowl winner,” so the projection system might not be too accurate. However, it’s an otherwise promising outlook for San Francisco’s next season, which usually isn’t the case for the previous season’s Super Bowl loser.

“The 49ers’ edge in quality over the Ravens and Chiefs is narrow, but because San Francisco plays in the weaker NFC, its championship chances (16%) are notably higher than any other club’s,” Walder said. “San Francisco has a 25% chance to reach the Super Bowl and a 16% chance to win it — both best in the league.

“We can debate the true division of credit among quarterback Brock Purdy, coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers’ plethora of talented skill position players, but it all adds up to a championship contender as long as running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, and tight end George Kittle remain healthy and productive…”

Ironically, FPI expects San Francisco to face Kansas City in the Super Bowl yet again. In order of highest percentage, here are the six most-expected Super Bowl LIX matchups:

  • College football odds, bets: Why Oklahoma State is undervalued as a Big 12 championship contender

College football odds, bets: Why Oklahoma State is undervalued as a Big 12 championship contender

There’s just something about playing underdog that Mike Gundy seems to love, no matter how much he wins. Oklahoma State was picked seventh in last season’s Big 12 preseason poll. Months later, the Pokes upset Oklahoma in the final Bedlam and played for a Big 12 championship. The Cowboys have reached double-digit wins eight times under Gundy’s watch. Half came after starting the year unranked in the preseason AP Top 25.

But in 2024, the lack of attention is head-scratching. Oklahoma State has the seventh-best odds to win the Big 12 championship, behind teams like Iowa State and Texas Tech. The Cowboys are tied with UCF, which went 6-7 during a frustrating first season as a power conference team. Ironically, the only Knights win against a legacy Power Five team came against OSU.

Granted, Oklahoma State was by no means dominant during its run to the Big 12 title game. Bizarre losses to UCF and South Alabama came by a combined 78-10. The Cowboys needed double overtime to survive a late charge from BYU. But still, Oklahoma State steadily held its ground. Heading into 2024, last season feels far more like an early arrival than a peak.

For one, running back Ollie Gordon II is back after a Doak Walker Award-winning campaign. Gordon rushed for 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns during a breakout sophomore season and will enter the 2024 season as the top returning rusher in the sport by a wide margin. 247Sports ranks his offensive line No. 1 in the nation, ahead of behemoths at LSU and Georgia. The unit boasts five starters, including tackles Dalton Cooper and Jake Springfield who combine for 89 starts.

Overall, Oklahoma State ranks No. 3 in returning production nationally per ESPN, trailing only Iowa State and Stanford. An absurd 85% of…

  • Cowboys’ Dak Prescott included in C.J. Stroud’s rankings of the NFL’s top 5 quarterbacks

Cowboys’ Dak Prescott included in C.J. Stroud’s rankings of the NFL’s top 5 quarterbacks

C.J. Stroud did some back-tracking after revealing his initial list of the NFL’s top-five quarterbacks based off of the 2023 season. One of the things that remained consistent, however, was Stroud’s inclusion of Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott.

In order, Stroud initially tabbed Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, himself, Prescott and Jalen Hurts as the NFL’s top quarterbacks during an appearance on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast. Stroud later called an audible, however.

In his updated list (which he posted on his Instagram account), Stroud kept the top-three quarterbacks the same, but gave the No. 4 spot to Josh Allen and moved Prescott to the fifth and final spot while omitting Hurts. Stroud added that he feels Joe Burrow is also among the NFL’s top 5 quarterbacks. Burrow, though, missed nearly half of the 2023 season with an injury, which was surely the reason why he was left off of Stroud’s list.

Stroud took some heat on the podcast for his inclusion of Prescott, who led the NFL last season with 36 touchdown passes. Prescott also led Dallas to a 12-5 record to improve to 73-41 as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback since 2016. Prescott fell to 2-5 as a postseason starter, however, after Dallas was upset by Jordan Love and the Packers in the NFC wild card round.

“Dak’s that boy,” Stroud said. “Ya’ll not gonna say that because he ain’t won the big one yet.”

Polarizing would be a good word to sum up Prescott’s career so far. He hit the ground running as a rookie, leading the Cowboys to a 13-3 record en route to Pro Bowl and Offensive Rookie of the Year Honors. But his numbers (and the Cowboys’ record) dipped in 2017, largely due to running back Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension.

Prescott returned to his Pro Bowl form in 2018 while helping lead the Cowboys to only their third playoff win since the franchise’s last Super Bowl triumph. He put up big…
