  • Shedeur Sanders turned heads in Browns debut, but likely QB pecking order remains unchanged in Cleveland

Shedeur Sanders turned heads in Browns debut, but likely QB pecking order remains unchanged in Cleveland

By the end of Shedeur Sanders’ performance in the Cleveland Browns’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, there were glowing reviews on social media from celebrities such as LeBron James and Jamie Foxx, complimentary posts from other NFL players like Xavier Worthy and even a Nike post that included a picture of Sanders along with the caption “Only a matter of time.”

As one Browns source joked, it may be the most talked-about preseason performance in the history of the NFL.

All jokes aside, though, it was a strong performance from Sanders that Cleveland’s staff felt good about and viewed as a confidence-builder and building block for the fifth-round draft pick. Even beyond the game, where Sanders went 14 for 23 for 138 yards with two touchdown passes, the Browns staff saw Sanders take a noticeable step forward with his preparation and locking in behind the scenes last week knowing that he was in line for more reps and to start that game vs. Carolina.

The big question now: How does the performance from Sanders impact Cleveland’s quarterback dynamic moving forward?

Here’s the reality from talking to sources: While there were a lot of positives from that start against Carolina (for example that he was decisive and threw the ball well), there are “still a lot of things there that need to be cleaned up,” including from a pocket presence standpoint and handling pressure. It was also emphasized that it’s important for people to not get ahead of themselves based on a team’s first preseason game. The feedback prior to the game had been that Sanders had been “up and down” through the beginning of the offseason and training camp,

Kenny Pickett and third-round draft pick Dillon Gabriel being limited by injuries has created opportunity for Sanders, which he has taken advantage of, but Sanders does appear to still be QB4 for Cleveland at the moment behind expected starter Joe…

  • Airport gets off to early start

Airport gets off to early start

CARLETON – Football coaches are famous for losing sleep over the game they love.

They fret about injuries, the next opponent, their players doing the right thing and many other things.

There is one day Derek Anderson doesn’t mind losing sleep.

The second-year head coach has started a new tradition at Airport. As they did last fall, the Jets opened practice at the earliest possible moment allowed by Michigan High School Athletic Association rules.

Airport took the field at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11.

“It’s a great way to start the season,” Anderson said. “We’re going to be doing this as long as I am coaching. Some of these guys will not be playing when their four years (of high school) are up. I want to give them as much of a football experience as I can.

“This is something they will still be talking about when they get into their upper 20s.”

The midnight practice is an experience the players seem to enjoy.

“This is a new tradition,” said senior quarterback Dillon Byrd. “It’s really cool.”

“I love it,” added senior receiver-defensive back Aidyn Stahr. “It’s so awesome. There is a lot of energy.”

Airport’s football runs a drill during its first practice for the 2025 season which began at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025.

“It’s a chance to bond and start the season right,” said defensive back Ryan Hildebrand.

In addition to the energy and bonding created by the unique practice time, Airport also was able to beat the heat.

It was about 80 degrees when the workout began and temperatures dropped as the workout progressed. The thermometer was forecast to climb near 90 degrees later in the day.

    “There’s still…

  • Colts to start Daniel Jones in second preseason game

Colts to start Daniel Jones in second preseason game

The Colts are sticking with their plan to start Daniel Jones at quarterback in their second preseason game, but they have made a tweak to the division of playing time between him and Anthony Richardson.

Steichen confirmed at a Sunday press conference that Jones will start against the Packers at home next Saturday and said that he expects Jones to play a couple series. Anthony Richardson will then enter the game and he is expected to have a longer stay in the lineup.

The Colts started Richardson in their preseason opener and planned to play him about a quarter and a half, but he dislocated his pinkie on their second possession and Jones played the rest of the first half. The initial outline was for Jones to play a quarter-plus in the second game, so the injury shifted how they’ll split the reps.

Jones was 10-of-21 for 144 yards in the opener. Richardson was 2-of-3 for 21 yards before his injury.

From the Texas offensive line to Michigan RB room, these non-QB questions need answers ahead of 2025 season

Few college football teams have every little detail figured out by the time the regular season arrives. You can count on unexpected bumps in the road, and it normally takes a few games before a team hits its full stride.

Still, fall camp is an extremely valuable time to develop a roster, evaluate where it stands and squeeze in every rep possible before actually lining up against another team. Coaches want finality, but questions always emerge in the early week of August.

Even potential College Football Playoff teams are susceptible to major concerns. Quarterbacks steal all the headlines, so it felt appropriate to look at some burning non-quarterback questions facing prominent teams around the nation, and how things stand with the start of the regular season — Week 0, at least — just one Saturday  away.

  • Jayden Reed injury update: Packers WR dealing with foot sprain, ‘hopeful’ to be back before Week 1

Jayden Reed injury update: Packers WR dealing with foot sprain, ‘hopeful’ to be back before Week 1

    Imagn Images

The Green Bay Packers’ leading receiver last season, Jayden Reed, missed the team’s first preseason game on Saturday, a 30-10 loss to the New York Jets.

While Reed was photographed in a walking boot ahead of the game at Lambeau Field, coach Matt LaFleur said he was hoping the star wideout will be ready when the Packers’ regular season kicks off at home against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7.

LeFleur said that the boot was unrelated to the pre-existing toe injury Reed had coming into training camp. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a source informed him that Reed was dealing with a sprained foot that left him “day-to-day.” LeFleur said that Reed would “hopefully” be back for the season opener.

Reed was also interviewed and spoke about the injury to the extent he appeared comfortable.

“I don’t want to be wrong about anything, so I ain’t gonna be the one to say it,” Reed said before being pushed further on the situation. “I mean, I just cut wrong off my foot and I’m a little sore.”

Reed, a second-round pick out of Michigan State in the 2023 NFL Draft, led the Packers with 55 receptions on 75 targets for 857 yards last season. He caught six touchdown passes, placing him second on the team behind tight end Tucker Kraft.

After Saturday’s game, LeFleur added, “Anytime you see a guy in a boot that’s a concern.”

  • Clemson football HC Dabo Swinney updates injury status of key starter

Clemson football HC Dabo Swinney updates injury status of key starter

The Clemson Tigers held their first live game of fall camp Saturday.

Afterwards, Tigers coach Dabo Swinney gave injury updates for starting safety Khalil Barnes and cornerback Jeadyn Lukus, as well as offensive lineman Dietrick Pennington.

“Pennington was there,” Swinney told reporters afterwards. “(Lukus) is probably more like Monday. Tuesday he should be back rolling. We’ll see where he’s at.”

While Barnes was a no-go Saturday, Swinney praised the safeties group in his absence.

“Safeties have actually been a bright spot for us,” he said. “I try to find the good in everything. I hate that Khalil has been out for a few days, but it’s kind of forced the opportunity for Ronan (Hanafin) and Ricardo (Jones) and Kylon Griffin. (Rob) Billings and (Kylen) Webb and those guys are getting a ton of work.”

Barnes has been dealing with what Swinney called a “short-term” injury after Wednesday’s practice. He started all all 14 games last year and had four interceptions and three pass breakups. That followed a standout freshman season as an All-American in which he had five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and six pass breakups.

“Our safety group has actually been a really bright spot at camp even with Khalil not out there,” Swinney said. “We all know what he is and what he can do. We’ll get him back at some point, but I think that group as a whole, the arrow’s up by them. Good competition.”

Lukus, a senior who started 10 games at cornerback a season ago and had 34 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and seven pass breakups, was in a yellow, no-contact jersey a day not long after fall camp opened on July 30.

Swinney also revealed that a top freshman, defensive lineman Amare Adams, was held out of Saturday’s scrimmage.

“He kind of sprained his ankle a little bit yesterday… so he wasn’t able to go today, but he’ll be back soon,” Swinney…

  • Tom Brady: New England Patriots unveil statue of NFL legend

Tom Brady: New England Patriots unveil statue of NFL legend

NFL great Tom Brady said he felt “deeply grateful” but “kind of old” after the New England Patriots unveiled a 12ft statue of him.

The legendary quarterback was honoured with the towering bronze sculpture outside the Patriots’ stadium in Massachusetts.

Brady guided the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, before going on to win a seventh with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.

The ceremony revealed the statue of Brady with one arm aloft in triumph – and it was mounted on a six-sided base in a nod to the number of championships he won with the Patriots.

With the base included, the entire construction is 17ft high – to reference the 17 AFC East division titles that Brady won as a starting quarterback.

“This is quite overwhelming to me,” the 48-year-old said. “I feel extremely honoured, deeply grateful and, if I’m being honest, kind of old.

“I never dreamed I’d be standing here two and a half decades later made of bronze and frozen in time.”

Over 23 seasons, three with Tampa Bay, Brady started 333 regular season matches and 48 playoff games, more than any other NFL quarterback in history.

He began his NFL career as the 199th pick of the 2000 draft and initially retired in 2022, before reversing his decision and playing a further season for the Buccaneers.

“Tom Brady’s journey proves that it’s not where you start, but where you finish that counts,” said Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

“Tom wasn’t just the face of our franchise, he was the heartbeat. It’s hard to overstate what Tom accomplished. He didn’t just rewrite the record books, he practically authored a new volume.”

The statue, which stands in the plaza outside the Patriots Hall of Fame, was revealed before their opening pre-season game, a 48-18 win over the Washington Commanders.

Since retiring, Brady has acquired a 5% stake in the Las Vegas Raiders and become a minority owner of English football club Birmingham City.

  • Auburn blue-chip TE Hollis Davidson III suspended from team, faces felony controlled substance charge

Auburn blue-chip TE Hollis Davidson III suspended from team, faces felony controlled substance charge

    Getty Images

Auburn freshman tight end Hollis Davidson III was arrested and charged with felony possession of a Schedule I controlled substance on July 28, according to police records obtained by the Montgomery Advertiser. An Auburn spokesperson told the publication that Davidson has been “suspended for violation of team rules” after initially participating in the team’s preseason workouts.

Davidson was approached by Peachtree City, Georgia, law enforcement on June 19 after he was seen outside a closed business near a golf cart. Officers found loose marijuana in the golf cart and a THC vape pen in Davidson’s pocket, though an arrest warrant was not issued until July 26 after further testing confirmed the substance inside Davidson’s vape.

He was released July 29 on a $5,000 bond.

The 6-foot-5 and 238-pound Davidson signed with Auburn in 2025 out of Peachtree City’s McIntosh High School. He was a four-star prospect and the No. 12 tight end in his class.

Davidson is the third Auburn football player to be arrested since the start of July. On July 8, linebacker D.J. Barber was arrested on three drug-related charges, including trafficking, and on July 16 Auburn wide receiver Malcolm Simmons was arrested and charged with domestic violence involving strangulation or suffocation.
