  • Four running backs topped 100 yards and 10 yards per carry Sunday

Four running backs topped 100 yards and 10 yards per carry Sunday

Sunday was a very big day for big-play running backs in the NFL.

Four different running backs ran for more than 100 yards and averaged more than 10 yards per carry on Sunday: Bills running back James Cook had 19 carries for 216 yards, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor had 12 carries for 153 yards, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley had 14 carries for 150 yards and Eagles running back Tank Bigsby had nine carries for 104 yards.

On a day of blowouts across the NFL, it’s no surprise that those running backs led their teams to big wins: Cook and the Bills won 40-9, Taylor and the Colts won 38-14 and Barkley and Bigsby led the Eagles to a 38-20 win.

It was the first time four different running backs topped 100 yards and 10 yards per carry on the same day since 1991.

  • Don’t be fooled by Dolphins, plus game balls and gaffes from NFL Week 8

Don’t be fooled by Dolphins, plus game balls and gaffes from NFL Week 8

Ever hear of the phrase dead cat bounce? Well, Miami’s 34-10 throttling of the Atlanta Falcons could be characterized as a dead dolphin bounce.

Sure, the Dolphins looked stellar as they took it to the Falcons on the road, but don’t be tricked into thinking this is an organization that has turned the tide. Fight the urge to look at Tua Tagovailoa’s pristine stat line, where the veteran quarterback completed 20 of his 24 throws for 205 yards and four touchdowns in the win, and use that as your beacon of hope that something has clicked for Miami.

The destination that will find Miami out of the playoff picture by season’s end, which will then trigger systematic changes, including at head coach and potentially quarterback, remains on track.

The victory, however impressive even if the Falcons were without starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and No. 1 wideout Drake London, has brought the Dolphins to just 2-6 on the season, still well out of range of being in the playoff conversation. They are four games behind both the New England Patriots (6-2) and Buffalo Bills (5-2) in the loss column in the division, and the road ahead isn’t as rosy as their remaining strength of schedule may suggest. Currently, Miami possesses the eighth-easiest remaining strength of schedule in the NFL with its opponents’ combined win percentage sitting at a measly .463.

However, there’s nuance to that figure which makes it much tougher than it meets the eye, which is highlighted in their upcoming trio of games. In Week 9, they’ll face the Baltimore Ravens, who, yes, are 2-5 on the year, but also could very well get Lamar Jackson back for the contest. The early 7.5-point spread in favor of Baltimore on the road suggests that Jackson will be under center, so that’s not a true under-.500 ball club they’ll face.

The same instance occurs two weeks later in Week 11 when they head to Madrid, Spain. There,…

  • Kyle Shanahan: Brandon Aiyuk could return to practice as soon as next week

Kyle Shanahan: Brandon Aiyuk could return to practice as soon as next week

The 49ers could open wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s 21-day practice window as soon as next week, coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday.

“Yeah, I believe he’s getting a lot closer,” Shanahan said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “It could [happen next week]. I think we’re week-to-week now, so hopefully, it will be sooner than later.”

Aiyuk remains on the reserve/physically unable to perform list as he continues to work his way back from ACL and MCL tears in his knee. He was injured Oct. 20, 2024, in a game against the Chiefs.

General Manager John Lynch said this week that Aiyuk was “making really good progress.”

Aiyuk had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023 before playing only seven games last season. He finished 2024 with 25 catches for 374 yards.

  • Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill explains his unique reaction to graphic knee injury and why he’s unsure of NFL future

Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill explains his unique reaction to graphic knee injury and why he’s unsure of NFL future

Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill had his season come to an abrupt halt in Week 4 when the eight-time Pro Bowl pass-catcher suffered a devastating knee injury in the win over the New York Jets. Hill dislocated his knee, and tore multiple ligaments, including his ACL.

When Hill was loaded onto the cart and driven off the field, he was seen clapping his hands and smiling. Hill waved to the crowd and blew kisses to fans as well. It was an odd reaction after a painful, season-ending injury, but there was a reason behind it.

During a recent appearance on Terron Armstead’s podcast, “The Set,” Hill said that after he realized his leg was “crooked,” he immediately felt grateful for all the incredible moments football has given him, and thought about the time he would now have to spend with his family.

“So I immediately started laughing man, because I feel like I’ve been able to play this game my whole entire life, and I’ve been blessed with great talents and great gifts, and the amount of support that I get from my family is amazing, man,” Hill said. “I really wasn’t even thinking about the injury. I was just thinking about the great times I’ve had playing this game and just me being in Miami. It all came full circle. I know this (wasn’t) it, but I was just happy bro. Because I’m always trying to find the good in everything. I get time to think about my kids, I get time to travel, I get time to like really sit down and enjoy my life and not always train.”

Hill said his entire life has been about training, living in the gym, on the track, on the jugs machine. He wasn’t sacrificing his time for his family or other things he wanted to do. Now, he has this opportunity to get close to his kids, go to church on Sundays and improve the man he is off the field.

Anytime a 31-year-old speedster suffers an injury like the one Hill did, it’s fair to wonder if his football career could…

  • A.J. Brown remains out of practice on Thursday

A.J. Brown remains out of practice on Thursday

The Eagles are missing a key offensive player at practice for the second straight day.

Reporters at the open portion of Thursday’s practice noted that wide receiver A.J. Brown remains out of action. Brown missed Wednesday’s practice due to a hamstring injury.

Brown also dealt with a hamstring issue this summer, but he has not missed any games this year. Brown hasn’t always been happy about his role in those games, but had a big game in last Sunday’s win over the Vikings and has 29 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns on the season.

If Brown is not able to practice on Friday, the Eagles may be going with DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, John Metchie, and Xavier Gipson at wideout against the Giants.

  • Aaron Rodgers vows Steelers showdown vs. Packers is not a revenge game

Aaron Rodgers vows Steelers showdown vs. Packers is not a revenge game

While Aaron Rodgers took extra delight in beating the Jets back in Week 1, the Steelers quarterback has made it clear that the same energy doesn’t apply to Sunday’s game against the Packers, his other former team that he enjoyed a tremendous amount of success with during their 18-year partnership.

“I don’t have any animosity toward the organization,” Rodgers said. “Obviously, I wish that things have been better in our last year there, but I have a great relationship with a lot of people still in that organization, and this is not a revenge game for me. I’m just excited to see some of those guys and be on ‘Sunday Night Football.’”

Rodgers has a profound appreciation for his time in Green Bay and the things he and the Packers were able to accomplish. He does, however, wish that their time together had ended differently.

After the Packers drafted his eventual successor — Jordan Love — in 2020, Rodgers responded with back-to-back MVP seasons while playing elite level ball. You could argue that Rodgers’ play during that span was better than any quarterback in history, including his former teammate Brett Favre’s impeccable three-year run from 1995-97 that included three consecutive league MVP awards.

Rodgers’ success correlated to team success for the Packers, who won the NFC North both years as well as home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. In the playoffs, however, Green Bay suffered heartbreaking home playoff losses to the eventual champion Buccaneers and the 49ers (Rodgers’ childhood team), respectively.

In 2022, Rodgers played all year despite playing most of the year with a broken thumb in his right throwing hand. Despite Rodgers’ injury and a 5-8 record, the Packers won three straight games to put themselves in position to make the playoffs with a win over the visiting Lions in Week 18. The Lions won, however, eliminating the Packers from postseason contention…
