Colts hire Shane Steichen: Indianapolis brings aboard former Eagles OC as next head coach

The Indianapolis Colts have hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their new head coach, the team made official on Tuesday. The Colts had to wait until after the Super Bowl to announce the deal, due to league rules. Steichen’s Eagles, of course, fell to the Chiefs 38-35 on Sunday.

The Colts spent the weekend slowly informing candidates that they were going in a different direction. Interim head coach Jeff Saturday was considered a leading candidate in the search despite going 1-7 in the role in 2022.

General manager Chris Ballard led the search for the Colts with owner Jim Irsay taking part in some of the process.

The Colts were infamously left at the altar in 2018 when they attempted to hire Josh McDaniels. The now-Raiders head coach pulled out and returned to New England with a new contract, and the Colts had to start the search again. They eventually hired Frank Reich who was let go during the 2022 season.

With Steichen’s departure from Philadelphia, the belief is quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson will become the new offensive coordinator. He had been in high demand around the league, but he wanted to wait and see what happened with Steichen first. The Eagles want to keep their continuity on offense as much as possible.

  • Anatomy of Chiefs’ Super Bowl comeback vs. Eagles: Patrick Mahomes leads second-half surge to win championship

Anatomy of Chiefs’ Super Bowl comeback vs. Eagles: Patrick Mahomes leads second-half surge to win championship

The Kansas City Chiefs are your Super Bowl champions, as they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, 38-35. This affair lived up to the hype. It was the third highest-scoring game in Super Bowl history, and the first in which both teams scored 35 points. The Eagles may have possessed more talent on paper, but Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs played some of the best ball they’ve played all season.

Sunday also tied for the second-largest comeback in Super Bowl history, as the Chiefs were down 10 points at halftime. The Eagles were looking like a well-oiled machine, so the Chiefs were going to have to score on every one of their second-half possessions. That’s exactly what happened.

Below, we will break down the anatomy of Kansas City’s thrilling comeback victory over Philadelphia, in what was one of the best Super Bowls in recent memory.

    Mahomes’ injury

By the time Rihanna took the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show, many were wondering if the game was already over. Not only were the Chiefs trailing, 24-14, but Mahomes was clearly injured. On his final snap of the first half, he…

  • Chiefs top Eagles 38-35 thanks to late-game magic from Mahomes

Chiefs top Eagles 38-35 thanks to late-game magic from Mahomes

On one leg, Patrick Mahomes finished the job. His reward, other than resting an oft-injured ankle this postseason, is a second Lombardi Trophy for the reigning NFL MVP.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, the team’s second title in four seasons. A controversial holding penalty by Eagles cornerback James Bradberry gave the Chiefs a chance to run the clock down and kick a game-winning field goal with eight seconds left, which Harrison Butker nailed from 27 yards.

Mahomes finished 21 of 27 for 182 yards with three touchdowns. Kansas City scored a touchdown on its first three drives of the second half after trailing at halftime 24-14.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was 27 of 37 for 304 yards passing, but was a force on the ground. He rushed for three touchdowns (15 carries, 70 yards) and tied the game at 35 on a two-point conversion with about five minutes left.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (six catches, 81 yards, touchdown) bested his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, on the game’s biggest stage, while Chiefs coach Andy Reid defeated his former team.

Chiefs win Super Bowl 57: Patrick Mahomes and Co. capture second title in four seasons

This is like watching Michael Jordan in his prime. Patrick Mahomes is 27. He’s on a team-friendly contract. In the five seasons he has been starter, the Chiefs have made it at least to the AFC title game. As long as Mahomes is under center, this will be the standard. He won his second Super Bowl MVP days after he won his second league MVP.

Mahomes had his right ankle injury reaggravated late in the second quarter when Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards fell on it as he dragged him to the turf. Ho hum. All Mahomes did after the injury was complete 13 of 14 passes for 93 yards and a pair of scores. As if that wasn’t enough, with 2:55 left to play in a tie game, he outran the Eagles defense on a 26-yard scramble that set up the game-winning field goal.

THE GAME:One reason why Chiefs will beat Eagles in Super Bowl: Patrick Mahomes

LIONS GM:Coaches, QBs get pub, but Super Bowl teams are built by great GMs. Is Brad Holmes the next one?

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, MVP of Super Bowl 54, was named Thursday as the NFL’s MVP of the 2022 season, with Eagles QB Jalen Hurts the runner-up. Philadelphia is 16-1 with Hurts starting this season and he has scored 15 rushing TDs in 17 games, setting a new QB single-season record (including playoffs). The Eagles’ defense finished with the third-most sacks ever (70) in the regular season. They have eight more in two playoff games, and became the first team ever with four players grabbing at least 10 sacks in the regular season: Haason Reddick (16), Josh Sweat (11), Javon Hargrave (11) and Super Bowl hero and Detroit native Brandon Graham (11).

Mahomes is dealing with a sprained ankle suffered three weeks ago vs. Jacksonville, but should be in better shape after two weeks of rest. Chiefs DT Chris Jones registered 15½ sacks and TE Travis Kelce scored a career-best 12 touchdowns. Mahomes and Kelce have connected on 13 playoff TDs, two behind Tom Brady-Rob Gronkowski (15). Kelce will face his older brother and fellow All-Pro, Eagles C Jason Kelce, the first brothers to face off in a…

  • What’s harder, football or rugby? Australian Eagles LT Jordan Mailata weighs in from Super Bowl 57

What’s harder, football or rugby? Australian Eagles LT Jordan Mailata weighs in from Super Bowl 57

PHOENIX – The champions of the NFL’s 2022 season will be determined when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles meet in Super Bowl 57.

But as two evenly matched squads prepare to clash, another debate was “settled” in the days before Super Sunday: What is the tougher sport, football or rugby?

No less an authority than Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata, who played professional rugby growing up in Australia, weighed in when asked about the sports’ fundamental distinctions.

“Everything. Physically, mentally, the playbook, learning the techniques. I think the difference between the two sports – I would say rugby is such a free-flowing sport, right? And we know how many (play) stoppages there are in a football game,” he said.

“There’s so much technique involved in (football) – it’s an absolute chess match – if you step 6 inches too far, you could ruin the play. To me, just from my experience, I really do believe that football is a lot harder than rugby.”

Mailata then broke into his signature laugh, knowing several Aussie media members surrounded him.

“But don’t come at me now,” he added. “You’ve got to give (football) a try, then we’ll talk.”

Mailata, 25, gave football a try five years ago, a decision that changed his life.

Eagles LT Jordan Mailata (68) celebrates a touchdown with TE Dallas Goedert in Philadelphia’s divisional playoff rout of the New York Giants in January.

After seeing this outsized man move about a rugby field, NFL scouts invited Mailata to participate in the league’s International Player Pathway Program, which identifies prospects outside the U.S. and Canada. He trained at Florida’s IMG Academy in 2018 while performing at various pre-draft workouts. Mailata said he felt like a “guinea pig” in what he described as a “rigorous” curriculum. He and the other international players had to bike around IMG while prospects headed for that year’s scouting combine in Indianapolis were driven about in golf carts.

    “That was great motivation to…
