Breaking down the Steelers picks in the new TD Wire mock draft

Our friends over at Touchdown Wire have a new three-round mock draft out and with excitement building for the 2023 NFL draft, we decided to take a look. We have to admit, this one went way off script and took us completely by surprise.

First round – CB Kelee Ringo, Georgia

Second round – TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame

Second round – C Joe Tippmann, Wisconsin

Third round – OT Matthew Bergeron, Syracuse

    Breakdown

OK, there is a lot to unpack here so let’s start at the end and work backwards. I like Matthew Bergeron and think he will be a very good starting right tackle. But I’m not sure he’s ready to contribute as a rookie so making him your single offensive tackle pick in the first three rounds means the team is planning to address the need via free agency.

Moving to the second pick of the second round, again like Bergeron, we like Joe Tippmann. Hard-nosed and very much a Steelers type of player. But with the addition of Herbig and Seumalo, I’m not sure what they do with him this year. Mason Cole will be back as the starting center and if he isn’t, it will be because James Daniels moves over and the new guards will take over the starting spots.

Now we come to the big one. Giving the Steelers a tight end, even a really good one with the No. 32 overall pick might send the entire city of Pittsburgh a heart attack. There are a dozen guys who are taken after Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer who can help this roster more. Not to mention he’s the third tight end taken. Complete lack of value there.

In the first round, I don’t hate Kelee Ringo as a pick. His man-coverage skills are great and he’s a ridiculous athlete. He needs a lot of coaching and is quite raw but again this is more about value. Ringo is the fourth cornerback on the 2023 roster. Is that how you use the No. 17 pick for a team on the verge of returning to the playoffs?

  • Titans at crossroads with Kevin Byard after approaching safety about pay cut, per report

Titans at crossroads with Kevin Byard after approaching safety about pay cut, per report

    USATSI

The Tennessee Titans are in the midst of an offseason of change, as new general manager Ran Carthon has already parted ways with several notable names such as left tackle Taylor Lewan and pass-rusher Bud Dupree. Tennessee is not done making moves, however, and now, all eyes have turned to star safety Kevin Byard.

According to ESPN, the Titans approached Byard about a pay cut, but Tennessee’s leader on defense does not believe his play warrants him taking less money. The Middle Tennessee State product has wanted to ultimately retire a Titan, but ESPN reports the two sides are at a crossroads. Turron Davenport reports that Byard has not requested his release.

Byard recorded 108 combined tackles, six passes defensed and four interceptions in 17 games played last season. With a defense that has suffered injuries at every position over the past couple seasons,…

  • Colts to sign former Jaguars starting QB Gardner Minshew

Colts to sign former Jaguars starting QB Gardner Minshew

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to target a quarterback early in the 2023 NFL Draft after parting ways with Matt Ryan, but the team added to its depth chart Thursday by agreeing to terms with Gardner Minshew, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Minshew, 26, will reportedly sign a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Indianapolis and may have a real chance at a starting role with the Colts only currently having Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles at the position.

Earlier in the offseason, the Colts hired former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their new head coach. Minshew spent the last two seasons as a backup for the Eagles after he was traded to the team by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Minshew was the Jaguars’ sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but was thrust into a starting role early in his rookie season after Foles suffered a collarbone injury.

In two years with Jacksonville, Minshew started 20 games and compiled a 7-13 record in those starts. He threw 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during his time with the Jaguars and is the franchise’s all-time leader in passer rating among quarterbacks with at least two starts.

  • Miles Sanders says goodbye to Philadelphia after Eagles come to terms with Rashaad Penny

Miles Sanders says goodbye to Philadelphia after Eagles come to terms with Rashaad Penny

    Getty Images

Miles Sanders apparently sees the writing on the proverbial wall. Despite a successful run that included his role in last year’s NFC title, the veteran running back feels that he will join the list of Eagles players who will play elsewhere in 2023.

Sanders bid adieu to Philadelphia on Tuesday shortly after it was reported that the Eagles agreed to terms with former Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny.

The 53rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Sanders blossomed into a Pro Bowl player during his time with the Eagles. He was named to his first Pro Bowl last season after setting career highs with 1,269 rushing yards and 11 touchdown runs. Sanders ran for an additional 148 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ three playoff games.

Sanders’ versatility is one of the things that should attract teams to him in free agency. After catching 50 passes as…

  • Vikings have had extension talks with Kirk Cousins, nothing is imminent

Vikings have had extension talks with Kirk Cousins, nothing is imminent

During a press conference at the Scouting Combine, Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked about the possibility of signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to an extension this offseason.

Adofo-Mensah said that the team didn’t want to be throwing darts at the quarterback position and that the team is “always trying to be solutions-oriented and find a way that works for both people” while acknowledging that the two sides may not have the same view of what another contract would look like.

It appears that remains the case. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that there have been extension talks this offseason, but that no deal is imminent as the start of the new league year draws closer.

Cousins has $15 million of a $20 million roster bonus due this week and he’s set to count $36.25 million against the cap in 2023. An extension would cut that number down, but it looks like he may be on his way to playing out this year on an expiring deal.

  • Agent’s Take: Target prices for Jessie Bates III, other intriguing defensive players with expiring contracts

Agent’s Take: Target prices for Jessie Bates III, other intriguing defensive players with expiring contracts

Target prices for 10 offensive players with expiring contracts were covered in an article earlier in the week. The focus now turns to the other side of the ball.

Things will get moving March 13 when the exclusive negotiating rights NFL teams have had with their impending free agents ends. The agents of prospective unrestricted free agents are allowed to negotiate with teams beginning at 12 p.m. ET on March 13 until 3:59:59 p.m. ET on March 15. Prospective UFAs who don’t have an agent can also negotiate with front office executives of teams. Players can’t sign deals with new clubs until the 2023 league year and free agency officially begin at 4 p.m. ET. A player’s ability to re-sign with his current club is allowed during the period.

As a reminder, it was my responsibility while working on the agent side to create target or asking prices for the firm’s clients headed toward free agency regardless of whether I was the lead agent. In that spirit, I have set target prices with total contract value, overall guarantees, amount fully guaranteed at signing and first three years compensation (when applicable) for 10 intriguing defensive players who will be unrestricted free agents or were designated as a franchise players.

Players don’t necessarily sign for their target prices because free agency is a fluid process where adaptations must be made to changing market conditions. Some players are disappointed in free agency’s outcome because their market never develops for a variety of reasons (age, unrealistic contract demands, supply and demand at a playing position, etc.).

Remember the target or asking prices for these players may be on the high side and aren’t necessarily what their actual deals will be.

  • Eagles updated roster ahead of NFL free agency

Eagles updated roster ahead of NFL free agency

With Howie Roseman choosing not to use the franchise tag, the Eagles are going to look a lot different when the team reconvenes at the NovaCare Complex for the 2023 off-season program.

Philadelphia has 18 pending free agents and 9 key contributors on defense that could move on for heftier paydays when the new league year starts on March 15.

Making matters even more urgent, the franchise will work to sign All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurt to a hefty contract extension, ensuring that multiple free agents are unlikely to return.

NFL free agency: Saints sign Derek Carr to 4-year, $150M deal, including $100M in total guarantees, per report

Instead of the Big Apple, Derek Carr is heading to New Orleans. The Saints sign the former Pro Bowl quarterback to a deal worth $150 million, including $100 million in total guarantees, according to NFL Media. Carr, who structured his deal to accommodate New Orleans’ cap situation, gets $60 million at signing.

Recent reports suggested that Jets were the frontrunners to land Carr. Yet the Saints, who had been in the running to acquire him from the beginning, managed to lure the offseason’s top available quarterback. Carr all but confirmed the news by Tweeting “Who Dat” late Monday morning.

He also thanked Raiders fans again with a post on Instagram: “I will miss all of you Raiders fans also. Thank you for an amazing 9 years.”

The Raiders’ all-time career passing leader, Carr was a four-time Pro Bowl selection during his nine years with the franchise. A league MVP candidate prior to getting hurt late in the 2016 season, Carr led the Raiders to the franchise’s only two playoff appearances since 2002.

Carr was benched this past year after having one of his best seasons to date in 2021….
