J.J. Watt suggests reducing offensive holding from 10 yards to five yards

It’s no surprise that NFL officials look the other way on holding all too often. Former NFL defensive lineman J.J. Watt has an idea for getting more yellow flags to fly.

Appearing recently on Pat McAfee’s show, Watt suggested reducing the penalty from 10 yards to five.

“I think the refs understand that a 10-yard penalty is a massive penalty in the NFL,” Watt said, via SteelersDepot.com. “So I think if you made [it] a 5-yard penalty, I think it’s going to be called much more fairly and much more realistically. Because it’s not as crippling to the offense.”

It’s an intriguing idea, but it potentially overlooks the reason for the failure to call holding. The officials aren’t trying to avoid taking away 10 yards of field position; they’re trying to let offenses operate effectively by giving offensive linemen an edge when it comes to defensive linemen who keep getting better and better — and who can inflict significant damage onto a quarterback if they hit him.

Illegal procedure is only a five-yard penalty, but the officials don’t call it like they should when a tackle takes off a split-second early. That head start helps him keep the edge rusher from hitting the quarterback. Ditto for the habit of tackles who line up too deep into the backfield.

If the rule were to change from 10 yards to five, there’s actually a chance it would be called even less frequently.

Regardless of whether it’s five or 10 or 15 yards, the NFL wants offenses to gain yards and score points. Currently, defensive linemen are collectively better than offensive linemen. Not calling holding or illegal procedure help balance out the disparity.

I’m not defending the practice, especially since it results in holding being called inconsistently. It’s frustrating for fans and teams and defensive players. All too often, officials fail to call holding. It can’t just be incompetence; the officials don’t want to bog the game down by calling holding whenever it happens. And it’s very possible they don’t call it by…

  • NBA All-Star 2024: Micah Parsons, Bennedict Mathurin show out in Celebrity Game and Rising Stars Challenge

NBA All-Star 2024: Micah Parsons, Bennedict Mathurin show out in Celebrity Game and Rising Stars Challenge

NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis got underway on Friday night with the Celebrity Game and Rising Stars Challenge. In the opener, Team Shannon held off Team Stephen A. for a 100-91 victory. Later on, Team Jalen defeated Team Detlef in the championship of the Rising Stars Challenge to claim that title.

With the first of three exciting nights now in the books, here’s a look at some of the moments that defined All-Star Friday.

Parsons steals the show in the Celebrity Game

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons finished third in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting earlier this month, but on Friday night he made sure he got his hands on a trophy. The three-time Pro Bowler stole the show at the Celebrity Game and was named MVP.

Parsons was a two-sport star in high school, and once competed against Brooklyn Nets guard Lonnie Walker IV. On Friday, he showed that he still has some skills on the court, as he poured in 37 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Team Shannon to victory.

This is the second consecutive year that an active NFL player has taken MVP honors in the Celebrity Game, and the fourth time overall. Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf earned the honors last year, while Hall of Famer Terrell Owens went back-to-back in the 2008 and 2009 events.

Mathurin has fascinating night that ends with MVP

Indiana Pacers swingman Bennedict Mathurin was named MVP of the Rising Stars Challenge, giving the hometown fans something extra to cheer about. He earned the honor after a truly fascinating night filled with impressive highlights, embarrassing bloopers and a surprising amount of trash talk.

Here’s a quick rundown of Mathurin’s best and worst moments:

    ‘You can’t guard me’

In the middle of the first game between Team Jalen and Team Tamika, Mathurin suddenly got serious when he confronted Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey and told him, “Even in the Rising Stars game…

  • Ex-NFL star Gerald McCoy explains why Bears hit home run with DC Eric Washington

Ex-NFL star Gerald McCoy explains why Bears hit home run with DC Eric Washington

Ex-NFL star Gerald McCoy explains why Bears hit home run with DC Eric Washington originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

LAS VEGAS — Gerald McCoy only spent one season around Eric Washington during his time with the Carolina Panthers, but the Bears’ new defensive coordinator left a lasting impression on the six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle.

“Listen, what are you going to get is a teacher?” McCoy, now an analyst for NFL Network, told NBC Sports Chicago at Radio Row for Super Bowl 58. “A lot of people — you’d be surprised how many people in the NFL don’t know how to play football the right way. They just don’t. They don’t know how to break down film. They don’t know how to watch film. They don’t know how to prepare for games. They are just talented. They’re just better and better athletes. It’s just: I can remember the play. OK, go do this.

“He’s going to teach you the game. Like, OK, why am I looking at this? Why am I looking at that? Why are we running this? I was always taught this. If you know how to do something, you make a lot of money. If you know why you’re doing it, you sign the checks for anybody.”

The Bears hired Washington as their defensive coordinator in January, filling the role that was vacated by the in-season resignation of Alan Williams.

While head coach Matt Eberflus will retain the defensive play-calling duties, Washington will play a critical role in the weekly game planning and be a key cog in the development of young Bears defensive linemen Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens.

During his time with the Panthers, McCoy saw how Washington’s ability to teach and break down information into easily digestible nuggets helped spur the growth of Panthers star defensive end Brian Burns.

“They’re getting a teacher,” McCoy said. “They’re getting a guy who every day you might question who’s really giving the most effort, him or the players, and it’s going to be him most of the time. He doesn’t take days off. You never going to have to worry about is…

  • 2024 NFL Draft: Former NFL quarterback says Drake Maye should be taken ahead of Caleb Williams

2024 NFL Draft: Former NFL quarterback says Drake Maye should be taken ahead of Caleb Williams

    Getty Images

Caleb Williams is the favorite to be the top quarterback taken in the 2024 NFL Draft class. While Williams is projected to go No. 1, a former NFL quarterback believes the “other” quarterback who is projected to be a high draft pick is the best in this class.

Tim Hasselbeck, who played for several NFL seasons and is an ESPN analyst, believes Drake Maye is the top college quarterback eligible for the draft — not Williams.

If Maye would get selected over Williams and go first overall, he would be the first North Carolina player drafted first overall in the common draft era (since 1967). The 2022 ACC Player of the Year is the only FBS player with 7,000+ passing yards and 1,000+ rushing yards over the past two seasons. Maye has the second-most total yards (9,076) in the FBS over the past two seasons (Michael Penix Jr. has more) and is the third-most over a two-year span in ACC history (Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson have more).

Maye’s 7,929 passing yards over the last two seasons are fifth in the FBS and his 62 passing touchdowns and 77 total touchdowns are tied for fifth. His 1,147 rushing yards were also fifth among quarterbacks in FBS.

Maye is a dual-threat quarterback in a league that’s trending in that direction. For a team needing a quarterback, Maye or Williams should be ideal.

The duo discuss what went wrong for Wilks in the Bay and whether or not they expect Jones to actually return to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. The duo also discuss the continuing debate around Kyle Shanahan’s in-game decisions during Super Bowl LVIII and whether or not he deserves the heat he’s getting.

The Chiefs are the team everyone in the AFC will have to chase for the foreseeable future, so Fitz and Frank take a dive into each AFC contender’s current situation and give their blueprint for how the team can compete with KC in the playoffs in the next year or two. The duo give their thoughts on the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns before finishing the show by deciding if they think each of these teams have a realistic chance of catching up by next season.

  • NFL Power Rankings: With Chiefs dynasty cemented, history next goal for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid

NFL Power Rankings: With Chiefs dynasty cemented, history next goal for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid

    Dynasty? Check.

All-time great quarterback on his way to being the best? Check.

    All-time great head coach? Check.

    Back-to-back Super Bowl victories? Check.

So what’s next for the Kansas City Chiefs? History. They can become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls if they win another one next season. Fresh off their 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night in Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs were already talking about doing it again. Three-peat will be the theme of the season.

That might sound crazy, but considering this Chiefs team was loaded with flaws, had to win two road playoff games to get to the Super Bowl and looked lifeless for much of the first half Sunday night, who are we to doubt them?

They have Patrick Mahomes after all. He once again proved why he is on his way to being the best ever. By winning his third Super Bowl in six years, plus his third Super Bowl MVP, Mahomes is on his way to chasing down Tom Brady’s seven titles.

Against the 49ers, Mahomes seemed off early as the offense struggled, yet he found a way to turn it around and win the game with a touchdown drive in overtime. In all three of his Super Bowl victories, he has rallied the Chiefs from 10 down.

This Chiefs team was certainly beatable this season, yet here they are again as champions. They need to do some offseason work, mostly notably finding a big-play receiver, adding tackle help, re-signing Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed, and hoping Andy Reid doesn’t walk away. But with Mahomes they will be right back in the thick of it again.

The Chiefs end the season as the top team in my Power Rankings, which seemed a long shot when they lost to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day. But that just shows you the value of having that guy under center.

The 49ers are in the second spot, with the top spot once again slipping out of their hands. Coach Kyle Shanahan is one of the best in…

  • Brandon Aiyuk stays vague about future with 49ers in wake of Super Bowl loss, cryptic social media posts

Brandon Aiyuk stays vague about future with 49ers in wake of Super Bowl loss, cryptic social media posts

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had a quiet showing in the team’s 25-22 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. Since then, the chatter surrounding his future has been quite loud.

The 25-year-old is headed into the final year of his rookie contract since the 49ers picked up his fifth-year option last April. On Tuesday, he addressed reporters in the 49ers’ locker room. Clearly emotional and covering his eyes with sunglasses, he admitted that the loss was the most difficult defeat of his career. But he stayed vague about where he hopes his career will take him next.

“If that’s the right move, yeah,” he answered when asked if he’d like to remain in San Francisco. In response to a follow-up question about what the right move would look like, he said, “Being a champion.”

He turned around to face his locker and said “That’s all I got,” when a question about his journey with the team almost brought him to tears.

Aiyuk recorded three catches on six targets for 49 yards in Sunday’s loss, a departure from the performance that saw his miraculous catch spark San Francisco’s comeback against the Detroit Lions in the NFC championship.

Aiyuk is a potential trade candidate if he and the team can’t agree on a long-term extension, and social media posts from the wideout and his inner circle after the Super Bowl suggest that negotiations might not be easy.

On Monday after the loss, Aiyuk posted a black Instagram story captioned “Don’t forget what got you there” with eye emojis.

Earlier that day, his girlfriend, Rochelle Searight, posted a TikTok that implied Aiyuk’s days with the 49ers are numbered.

“This might have been the last day we touched foot on Levi’s Stadium,” she said in the video, “Because we might not be out here next season.” She captioned the video “Happy 49ers Travel Day of Shame,” explaining that she was picking up Aiyuk after the…

  • 2024 NFL season lookahead: Key offseason storylines, plus five teams to watch, including Texans, Packers, Jets

2024 NFL season lookahead: Key offseason storylines, plus five teams to watch, including Texans, Packers, Jets

Super Bowl LVIII is in the rearview mirror, and so is the 2023 NFL season. As the Kansas City Chiefs celebrate their latest championship, the rest of the league is hard at work trying to knock them off their pedestal and hoist the Lombardi Trophy for themselves. Over the next few months, key milestones of the roster-building process will take place, including free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft.

As you might imagine, the offseason is filled with many twists and turns and by the time we’re kicking off the 2024 regular season, some teams could look entirely different. In that spirit, we’re going to take our first glimpse of the offseason by highlighting a handful of key storylines as well as some of the teams that could make some of the loudest moves over the next few months. We’ll also be taking a look at who the oddsmakers currently have as the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX.

    Five key offseason storylines

    1. What do the Bears do with the No. 1 overall pick? Arguably the most interesting storyline to follow this offseason will be what the Chicago Bears do with the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They found themselves in this situation a year ago and ended up trading the pick to Carolina for a treasure trove of assets. Do they follow the same course of action this time around or do they make the pick with a generational talent like USC quarterback Caleb Williams sitting atop most draft boards? If they do, how does that impact Justin Fields?

    2. Does Stefon Diggs request a trade? An NFL offseason is typically good for at least one jaw-dropping trade. Could that end up taking place in Orchard Park? All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs has endured a turbulent past calendar year with the Buffalo Bills and even cast some doubt on his future with the franchise at the Pro Bowl. If he is unhappy with his situation, all eyes would then center around the possibility of him asking out of town.

    3. Where do the…
