The Pittsburgh Steelers had some good and bad news following Wednesday’s practice. The bad news was that starting guard Isaac Seumalo sustained a pectoral injury during practice. The good news was that Seumalo avoided a season-ending injury and is expected to miss a month, according to the Post-Gazette.

Seumalo underwent tests to determine the severity of the injury after leaving practice early and a source told ESPN that, “We dodged a bullet.”

Injuries have plagued Pittsburgh’s offensive line this summer. Nate Herbig, who was competing with rookie Zach Frazier to be the Steelers’ starting center, suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during Pittsburgh’s final training camp practice. Starting tackle Broderick Jones has been playing through an elbow injury that surely contributed to his struggles during the exhibition season.

Eagles 2024 roster cuts: Tracking the roster moves to 53

Eagles 2024 roster cuts: Tracking the roster moves to 53 originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Eagles have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to cut their roster from 91 players to 53.

This won’t be their final 53-man roster, but it’s where they have to start. Plenty of the players released before the deadline will end up on the 16-man practice squad.

Here’s the full list of Eagles moves to get to 53:

    Released the following players:

    Waived the following players:

Placed the following player on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform:

Placed the following players on Reserve/Injured and Designated for Return:

We’ll be tracking the moves as they come in:

    Released

OL Max Scharping: The Eagles signed Scharping in June to bolster their offensive line depth. He played in 79 games with 33 starts for the Texans and Bengals from 2019-23. Scharping played mostly tackle and guard this summer but didn’t crack the 53-man roster. He was one of several OL veterans in camp.

CB Parry Nickerson: The veteran nickel corner had some good moments in camp. His best was a 95-yard pick-6 off of Tanner McKee. He wasn’t expected to make the 53-man roster but Nickerson gave the Eagles good reps this summer after playing under Vic Fangio in Miami in 2023.

QB Will Grier: The Eagles were never going to keep Grier but he was in Philly to help the other quarterbacks learn Kellen Moore’s offense.

OLB Julian Okwara: The 26-year-old former Lions’ third-round pick had a strong preseason finale but it wasn’t enough to stick around. Okwara has played in 38 games with 4 starts in his career and has 9 career sacks. But he was buried on the depth chart this summer.

WR John Ross: The former first-round pick was a good story this spring and summer. After not playing since 2021, Ross attempted a comeback with the Eagles. He had some good moments in training camp but suffered a concussion late in camp. (Josina Anderson)

WR Parris Campbell: The Eagles brought in Campbell to compete for the WR3 job but the trade for…

  • CeeDee Lamb contract extension has Cowboys ‘fired up’: Here’s what’s next as star WR gears up for Week 1

CeeDee Lamb contract extension has Cowboys ‘fired up’: Here’s what’s next as star WR gears up for Week 1

While humanity as a society is as connected as it has ever been in terms of methods one can use to communicate with someone, we as people have never been closer.

However, sometimes it can feel like there is less and less monoculture — shared experiences among people — with so many different media and entertainment options these days. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb signing a four-year, $136 million contract extension with $100 million guaranteed to remain with Dallas brought together the massive complex that is The Star in Frisco, Texas, the Cowboys’ headquarters. Cheering and loud clapping was reportedly audible for at least 15 minutes throughout the building.

“The reaction was great,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday on a conference call. “Everybody in the office was fired up. … I think number one it was just great to get the contract in place and obviously have him back. So, the schedule that we have for the week really frankly kind of fits into a ramp-up mode. I don’t feel like we have to do a whole lot of adjustment, but obviously we’re going to have a plan. We all recognize that and that’s something that when I have a chance to sit down and talk with CeeDee, we’ll go through [it].”

  • Cowboys owner Jerry Jones weighs in on 18-game seasons, kickoffs and football in L.A.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones weighs in on 18-game seasons, kickoffs and football in L.A.

Most NFL owners are singularly focused on their franchise. Jerry Jones is different.

The Dallas Cowboys are first and foremost to Jones, naturally, but the team’s longtime owner also keeps a keen eye on the machinations to the west.

Few people were more involved in the NFL’s return to Los Angeles than Jones, who brings his players to Oxnard each summer for training camp. He was a staunch proponent of the stadium plan in Inglewood — what would eventually become SoFi Stadium — and had the influence to bring a lot of fellow owners with him.

So there’s a sense of pride Jones feels not just in the league’s return to the nation’s second-largest market, but also the byproduct of the Raiders’ move from Oakland to Las Vegas.

“I’m so rewarded by the NFL fans in Southern California, the dominoes that took place with the Rams and Chargers being in that fabulous stadium, and the way the Raiders ended up in Las Vegas,” Jones said last week after one of the Cowboys’ final Oxnard practices of the summer.

“I had that all thought out,” he said sarcastically with a playful chuckle. “But still it worked out.”

After an impromptu gaggle with a group of reporters focused on the state of the Cowboys, Jones spoke with the Los Angeles Times on a variety of topics including L.A., the prospects of an 18-game season and the dramatic changes to kickoffs.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is in favor of expanding the regular season by a game, which would mean get the players’ union to go along with the idea. That number was bumped to 17 games in 2021 when the league and NFL Players Assn. forged a new collective bargaining agreement that runs through the 2030 season.

The league could go to 18 games before a new CBA as long as both sides agree…

  • Ernest Jones landing spots: Rams give star linebacker permission to seek trade, per report

Ernest Jones landing spots: Rams give star linebacker permission to seek trade, per report

Los Angeles Rams starting linebacker Ernest Jones is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and he’s seeking an extension. However, ESPN reports that there has been no progress made in contract talks, and Jones has now been granted permission to seek a trade.

Jones later took to social media to claim that he never asked for a trade. It would be surprising to see the Rams ship off one of their young talents who is a leader on the defensive side of the ball. The 24-year-old Jones was selected by L.A. in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of South Carolina, and he had a career year in 2023 with 145 combined tackles, 4.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and six passes defensed.

Jones has also stepped up his performance in the playoffs. In Super Bowl LVI vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, he recorded seven combined tackles and one sack to go along with three QB hits. Last year against the Detroit Lions in Super Wild Card Weekend, he recorded nine combined tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

The top 10 highest-paid linebackers are now all making at least $10 million per year. We’ve seen plenty of trades in recent days. Where could Jones potentially end up? That’s what we’re here to examine.

Buffalo has a bit of a hole at inside linebacker after it lost Matt Milano for the majority of this upcoming season due to a torn biceps. The Bills lost plenty of talent on both sides of the ball this offseason, but especially on defense. Jordan Poyer, Tre’Davious White, Dane Jackson, Tim Settle and Tyrel Dodson are no longer part of the team. Scoring a young, talented linebacker from the other conference would be ideal for Buffalo — but keep in mind the Bills will have to pay him.

Expect the Panthers to use that top waiver claim plenty in the coming days, because there’s work to do on this roster. Carolina could also consider sending a late pick for a young linebacker and paying him as…

  • Israel Abanikanda touchdown run the difference, Jets beat Giants, 10-6, in preseason finale

Israel Abanikanda touchdown run the difference, Jets beat Giants, 10-6, in preseason finale

Both teams rested most of their main contributors for Saturday night’s game, but the Jets and Giants still contested a competitive game with many players on each team looking to secure their roles for the upcoming season.

The Jets led 10-3 at the half as Israel Abanikanda boosted his roster chances by breaking a 45-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Abanikanda racked up 83 yards on the ground in the first half.

The Giants, with Tommy DeVito at the helm, ran the ball well in the first half but struggled to get anything going in the passing game. At one stage, the Jets had sacks on three consecutive plays with undrafted rookie defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III credited with a half-sack on all three plays.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Giants drove down into the red zone but had to settle for another field goal to cut the Jets’ lead to 10-6 and were unable to score again.

    Here are the key takeaways…

    – Unfortunately, injuries were a big story in the first half with the Giants losing both John Michael Schmitz and Evan Neal to ankle injuries. Schmitz, who is due to start at center for the team this year, was in the game to get some extra reps having missed some time in camp, while Neal was seeing his first action in the preseason having only recently returned from another injury.

    – The Jets also had a few players with a chance to make their roster who left the game with injuries. Tight end Kenny Yeboah and offensive linemen Max Mitchell and Xavier Newman were all on the active roster as they played 26 games and started 12 between them in 2023 but they all exited this game in the first half.

    – Before leaving the game with an injury, there were worrying signs from Neal, who struggled so badly last season. Takk McKinley blew past Neal easily for a first quarter sack. It looks highly unlikely that Neal is going to start for the Giants this season, even if he’s healthy. McKinley added 1.5 more sacks after halftime.

    – There is always an opportunity to…

Several Chargers players, personnel stuck in elevator in Dallas hotel prior to preseason finale at Cowboys

Both sides in the Los Angeles Chargers-Dallas Cowboys preseason finale set for Saturday in Texas have gone through quite an ordeal to wrap up their respective preseasons.

On Monday, a Cowboys’ player’s hotel room caught fire out at training camp in Oxnard, CA. On Friday evening around 7:30 p.m. CT, several Chargers players and personnel were trapped in an elevator at the team’s hotel, the Westin in downtown Dallas, per WFAA. Los Angeles released a statement announcing everyone trapped in the elevator was successfully rescued, one-by-one, by the Dallas Fire-Rescue.

“At approximately 7:30 p.m. CT Friday evening, several players and members of the Chargers traveling party were stranded in an inoperable elevator at the team hotel,” the Chargers said in a statement. “Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the incident and subsequently assisted everyone from the elevator, one-by-one, through its ceiling panel and into an adjacent elevator. The Los Angeles Chargers thank Dallas Fire-Rescue for their quick response, professionalism and substantial efforts in ensuring everyone’s safety.”

The Chargers and Cowboys are set to kickoff their preseason finale in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium at 3 p.m. C.T. on Saturday.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Zay Jones will miss the start of the season after receiving a five-game suspension, the NFL announced Friday. The suspension marks a punishment for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Jones was arrested last November with a misdemeanor domestic battery charge. The charge was later dropped, but the NFL ran its own investigation. As a result, Jones will miss the first five games of the season.

Jones, who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars at the time, signed a one-year, $4.25 million deal with the Cardinals in May.
