2025 Super Bowl MVP voting: Cooper DeJean won fans’ vote, should an Eagles defender have won MVP?

The selection of Jalen Hurts as Super Bowl LIX MVP was hardly a surprise in the wake of the Eagles 40-22 bludgeoning of the Chiefs on Sunday night. We’ve seen time and time again the quarterback pull in the hardware in these situations and not just because of the importance of the position.

As noted here plenty of times, the voting process is somewhat flawed, because it essentially asks for several volunteers from the media who are writing on deadline to quickly submit a vote for the Most Valuable Player in a game that’s currently ongoing or close to ending.

For games with a wild ending, it’s a really difficult task. And it’s why you often see defensive players win MVP in games that turn into one-sided affairs. Which is why it was a little surprising we didn’t get a defensive player winning the award after the Eagles completely shut down the Chiefs offense outside of garbage time, much of which featured the Eagles backups against the Chiefs starters.

Hurts was certainly a perfectly fine candidate, no question about it. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while running for another score. The other top MVP candidate, Saquon Barkley, was held in check by the Chiefs defense, and Hurts responded by stepping up in the passing game.

But as good as Hurts was in the game, you could easily argue the defense was more important to the Eagles success and one of the many defenders who stepped up could have received the votes.

And the public agrees. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean actually received the most votes of any player on a public NFL.com poll during the game, which is worth 2.5 votes out of a possible 20 total votes.

Hurts finished second, receiving one vote, and defensive end Josh Sweat got a half vote for finishing third.

The remaining 16 votes are largely unaccounted for, although PFT’s…

    Patriots re-sign DL Jeremiah Pharms

The Patriots have taken one of their exclusive rights free agents off the market.

OSMG announced that their client Jeremiah Pharms has signed a two-year deal with the team. The defensive lineman would have been tied to the team through a tender offer, but the new deal speeds up the process of his return to New England.

Pharms played in 16 games during the 2024 season and made five starts. He had 33 tackles, two sacks, and five quarterback hits.

Pharms also made 12 appearances in 2023 after spending time in indoor football and the USFL. He was undrafted out of Friends University in 2020.

  • Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to Eagles adds to legacy of the Kobe-Shaq Lakers as last successful three-peat

Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to Eagles adds to legacy of the Kobe-Shaq Lakers as last successful three-peat

For all of their success, one of the enduring legacies of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal’s partnership is the fact that they led the last successful three-peat in North America’s four major professional sports leagues.

From 2000-02, the Los Angeles Lakers won three straight NBA titles, a level of success that the Chiefs tried to match this season but ultimately came up short of achieving following their 40-22 loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Kansas City joined the eight previous back-to-back Super Bowl champions that were unable to three-peat. The 1965-67 Packers remain the NFL’s last team to win three straight titles.

The early 2000s Lakers’ success came at the heels of the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls’ dominance of the NBA in the ’90s that included not one but two successful three-peats. The 2000s Lakers’ three-peat concluded just four years after Jordan led the Bulls to their second successful three-peat and less than two years after the Yankees won their third consecutive World Series title.

Four three-peats in less than a decade’s time probably watered down the Lakers’ accomplishment. Instead of celebrating it, the immediate question was how many more titles Kobe and Shaq would win together in the coming years.

The answer was ultimately zero. Los Angeles’ sweep of Jason Kidd’s Nets in the 2002 NBA Finals was the final championship for those Lakers teams. The Lakers made it back to the NBA Finals in 2004, only to get flattened by the Detroit Pistons in a gentlemen’s sweep. Shaq was traded that offseason, thus ending one of the most successful, entertaining and polarizing partnerships in the history of sports.

Dominant is also a word you could accurately use to describe the Lakers in those years. The 2001 Lakers went 15-1 in the playoffs, as it took a herculean effort from Allen Iverson in the Finals for Los Angeles to suffer a postseason loss. The Lakers…

  • Top 5 NFL storylines to watch for in 2025

Top 5 NFL storylines to watch for in 2025

With the season in the rearview mirror, Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz looks ahead to the most important stories for next season – from Joe Burrow’s quest to get some help, to how the Chiefs respond to a stunning Super Bowl loss and what’s next for some of the most notable quarterbacks in the league.

    Video Transcript

The Eagles have taken the Lombardi Trophy, which means we now get to look ahead to the 2025 season already with the five biggest storylines coming in at number 5.

    Will Burrow get any help?

We watched an MVP caliber season this year get wasted.

We’ve seen the offensive firepower year in and year out.

Heck, we know that he can beat Mahomes, but none of that matters if the Bengals don’t get a defense, which they can’t seem to do.

    Will they continue to fail.

Incredible quarterback in at number 4.

Speaking of failing, will the failures of the Bills and the Ravens start to crumble those teams under the pressure of Kansas City?

Yes, the Chiefs just lost the Super Bowl, which means we’re all going to presume that there’s now an open window.

But if you’re the Bills and the Ravens hearing this every single year, the pressure only mounts with every single failure.

    In at number 3.

Speaking of the Chiefs, did we just make them mad?

What’s the reaction going to be to Super Bowl hangover.

Is there a real blueprint now?

Is everybody going to try and get a defensive line like Philly?

    Easier said than done.

Is this going to be the sort of thing that charges and engages the Chiefs at a different level?

Will Kansas City come back with the fire in their belly that makes them even tougher to take down?

It’ll be interesting to see how they react to this sort of a blowout loss.

Now that loss came to our #2 talking point, which is Philadelphia.

Frankly, let’s make this about encores.

    To me the.

The second biggest storyline is the encore of Jayden Daniels and what that’s gonna mean for Washington in a division where the encore of the Philadelphia Eagles looks like it could be spectacular.

    They…

  • Brandon Graham shares plan to remain with Eagles even if he retires after second Super Bowl victory

Brandon Graham shares plan to remain with Eagles even if he retires after second Super Bowl victory

NEW ORLEANS — Brandon Graham, in his 15th NFL season, is going out with another Super Bowl championship … if the Philadelphia Eagles legend chooses to go out, of course. After the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, Graham wouldn’t commit to retiring on the spot despite saying ahead of the season that he originally planned to play 15 years in the league.

However, he did share what he wants to do within the Eagles organization when he does decide to hang up his cleats for good.

“Let me tell you: I wanna learn as much as I can. If you want an intern coming in, I wanna learn under Howie [Roseman, Eagles general manager],” Graham said after the Super Bowl win. “We got something special going on. We got the secret sauce.

“I wanna be a part of every little thing. That’s why, even if I am done [playing], I’m not done with this organization. I’m gonna be here somehow, someway. I’m gonna figure out where my place at.”

Should Graham ultimately decide to retire on a high note, the 36-year old pass rusher believes a future in the front office is his best bet. Now, he has figured out which avenue he wants to take and how he plans to affect the organization while remaining in the city of Philadelphia.

“I’m gonna make sure I keep motivating the guys,” he said. “I’m thankful that we got some young guys that are gonna be here. I don’t know how [Roseman will] keep them all, but he’ll figure out a way.”

Are Super Bowl champion Eagles the NFL’s next dynasty? Why Philadelphia could be poised for even more success

    Cody Benjamin

The second Super Bowl championship for Graham was more special then the first. Not because he gets to celebrate in New Orleans instead of…

Kansas City Chiefs will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night.

The Chiefs won a thrilling AFC Championship Game, overcoming Buffalo Bills 32-29 to become the first back-to-back champions to return to the Super Bowl. It is the fifth time in six years that the Chiefs have reached the final stage of the NFL championship, winning three of the past five.

The Chiefs, led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, could become the first franchise in NFL history to achieve a Super Bowl three-peat after last year becoming back-to-back champions with victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The previous year, Mahomes led his team to glory by beating the Eagles.

If the Chiefs are to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy for a third successive year, they must overcome the Eagles in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII.

The Eagles, whose only Super Bowl victory came in 2018, easily dispensed with the Washington Commanders, 55-23, in the NFC Championship Game, and are eager to avenge their 2023 defeat – a 38-35 nail-biter and one of the all-time classics.

  • Every Super Bowl halftime performer in history: Kendrick Lamar joins list with Rihanna, Usher, Beyonce, others

Every Super Bowl halftime performer in history: Kendrick Lamar joins list with Rihanna, Usher, Beyonce, others

One of the major non-football storylines that centers around the Super Bowl is the halftime show. These days, the halftime show is one of the most exciting performances of the year and is headlined by some of the biggest artists of all time.

In 2024, Usher took the stage in Las Vegas. In 2023, Rihanna took the stage at State Farm Stadium during Super Bowl LVII. Before that, five performers took the stage for Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles, California: Eminem, Dr. Dre. Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige performed halfway through the Rams win over the Bengals. Just a few years after that performance, Kendrick Lamar is once again hitting the Super Bowl stage, this time as a headliner.

The NFL, Roc Nation and Apple Music announced ahead of Sunday’s Week 1 games that the 17-time Grammy winner will be this year’s performer. SZA was announced as the special guest a few weeks before the big game.

Usher headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show in Las Vegas in 2024.

For the artists who play the halftime show at the Super Bowl, they’re entertaining an audience that is exponentially bigger than any they’ve ever encountered. It was not always like that however.

So, what were the shows like before they were must-see television? Do you remember that killer halftime show featuring the Rockettes, Chubby Checker and the 88 grand pianos in 1988? Do you remember the captivating “Be Bop Bamboozled” at the Orange Bowl in 1989? No, no you do not. Ditto Carol Channing (twice) or any one of those four annoyingly contrived Up With People performances…

  • Super Bowl 2025: Travis Kelce reportedly ‘uncertain’ about playing in 2025

Super Bowl 2025: Travis Kelce reportedly ‘uncertain’ about playing in 2025

There’s been a lot of speculation about Travis Kelce’s future. And it may not be unfounded.

According to the NFL Network, “sources say Kelce still hasn’t made up his mind about whether or not he’ll play in 2025” after Sunday’s Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles. Kelce is in his 12th season in the league and posted the lowest receiving yardage total of his career with 823 across 16 games. His 8.5 yards per catch were a career low after he had a then career-low 10.6 yards per catch in 2023.

Kelce, 35, agreed to a two-year contract extension ahead of the 2024 season that appeared to make it clear he was going to play through the 2025 season. And Kelce hasn’t publicly entertained the idea of retiring after the Super Bowl during the myriad media sessions before the game. When asked earlier this week what he envisioned himself doing in three years, Kelce said he hoped he was still playing football.

It’s understandable why there’s been retirement speculation about the star tight end. Kelce’s stats have slowed over the past two seasons; he’s in uncharted territory for a tight end to play at a high level at his age. And he’s also set himself up for a very lucrative career outside of football. Kelce has hosted “Saturday Night Live,” starred in an FX series in the offseason and, oh yeah, is dating Taylor Swift. He can do nearly anything he wants in entertainment when his football career is over.

Will that career continue for at least another season? We should find out fairly soon no matter if the Chiefs become the first three-time Super Bowl champion in NFL history or not. Kelce is due a roster bonus of $12.5 million that pays out all but $1 million on March 14. Given the timing of that bonus, Kelce’s decision to keep playing or go on to other endeavors should come before free agency and the draft to give the Chiefs ample time to figure out a succession plan if they need one.
