  • 2025 MAC Football Preseason Preview: Toledo Rockets

2025 MAC Football Preseason Preview: Toledo Rockets

If you’ve watched Mid-American Conference football for even just a year or two, you know what to expect from the Toledo Rockets: a stacked roster with tons of senior experience, one of the best and most consistent coaching staffs at the non-Autonomous level and sky-high expectations.

Toledo is the type of program which expects to be in the MAC title conversation from Week 1’s kickoff to the final whistle of the conference slate— and often times, they’re right in contention at the end.

The Rockets have not had a losing record in 15 years; during that stretch, Toledo has gone 107-53 overall, with three division wins (2017, 2022, 2023) and two conference titles (2017, 2022), while also going to a bowl game 12 of the last 15 seasons dating back to 2010.

The last two seasons, however, have brought some stumbling blocks.

2023 saw a potentially historic run squandered right at the finish line, as the then 23rd-ranked Rockets fell to the Miami RedHawks 23-14 in the MAC title game to close the door on a potential College Football Playoff berth. Toledo would go on to lose to Wyoming in the Arizona Bowl to finish 11-3 (8-0 MAC.)

2024 had a promising start, highlighted by a 41-17 spanking of SEC foe Mississippi State on the road to start the season 3-0. However, the Rockets would lay an egg the very next week on the road against Western Kentucky, blowing a 21-10 third-quarter lead to lose 26-21.

Toledo’s stumble in the hills of Kentucky extended into conference play, as they finished 1-3 against the conference’s major contenders (losses to Buffalo, Bowling Green and Ohio; win against Miami) before ending the season acrimoniously with a loss to the 3-8 Akron Zips.

A bowl win prettied up the overall record, but 8-5 is not a mark Toledo strives for, to say the least.

This upcoming season sees Toledo being held to high…

  • Bill Belichick on difference between coaching in college vs. NFL: ‘There’s no owner, there’s no owner’s son’

Bill Belichick on difference between coaching in college vs. NFL: ‘There’s no owner, there’s no owner’s son’

Bill Belichick is about to enter his first season as the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, and he is learning that life in the college ranks has some advantages over the NFL. One of those benefits is the lack of meddling owners — and their sons.

In an interview with The Boston Globe, Belichick noted that there are fewer people to answer to in college, making operations “much more cohesive” and “unified.” There is an athletic director and big-time boosters, but nothing like the formal hierarchy of NFL franchises.

“There’s no owner, there’s no owner’s son, there’s no cap, everything that goes with the marketing and everything else, which I’m all for that,” Belichick said. “But it’s way less of what it was at that level. Generic NFL teams, you have the owner, president, general manager, personnel director, college director, pro director, cap guy, some other consultant, then head coach. I’d say when we had our best years in New England, we had fewer people and more of a direct vision. And as that expanded, it became harder to be successful.”

Belichick spent 24 seasons coaching the New England Patriots, winning six Super Bowls in the process. But his time there ended on a sour note with a losing record in three of his final four seasons. And…

Kalen DeBoer shares why Ty Simpson was named Alabama football captain

A look at Alabama football’s Walk of Champions at Bryant-Denny Stadium

VIDEO: A brief tour of the Walk of Champions at Alabama football’s Bryant-Denny Stadium: Statues, commemorating championships and more.

Kalen DeBoer viewed Alabama football quarterback Ty Simpson as a leader before he was named the team’s starter or a captain. It’s one of the things DeBoer appreciates about Simpson.

After being named the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback ahead of Alabama’s season opener at Florida State, Simpson was also made one of the team’s four permanent captains along with linebacker Deontae Lawson, defensive tackle Tim Keenan III and center Parker Brailsford.

“He’s invested a lot of time into this program,” DeBoer said after practice Thursday, Aug. 21. “It means a lot to him. Now, when he’s been the quarterback, named the quarterback, he’s taken it to another level and put himself out there front and center. And it’s not something that’s just, ‘OK, I got to do this.’ He wants to do this. He feels natural in this position. I’m certainly proud of him. The team voting him a captain certainly represents how they feel about him too.”

Simpson has the most experience of any Alabama quarterback, but has played in less than 200 snaps across three collegiate seasons.

Simpson followed in the footsteps of Jalen Milroe, Bryce Young, Mac Jones and Tua Tagovailoa as Alabama quarterbacks who were also named team captains.

Simpson was also voted a member of Alabama’s leadership group before spring practice began.

Why Tim Keenan, Parker Brailsford were named Alabama football captains

Along with Simpson and Lawson, a returning captain from 2024, Keenan and Brailsford were also named as team captains for the 2025 season.

Keenan, DeBoer said, pours his heart and soul into the Crimson Tide program and has developed into a “big brother” for younger…

Top college football parlay for Week 0

    Iowa State +131

The Cyclones set a school record with 11 victories last season after never finishing with more than nine. One of those 11 triumphs came at home against the Wildcats, a 29-21 win that was Iowa State’s fourth in its last five meetings with Kansas State.

Quarterback Rocco Becht threw a pair of touchdown passes and also ran for a score in that triumph. He enters this matchup with at least one passing TD in 18 consecutive games, which is an Iowa State record and the longest active streak in FBS. The model sees…

  • Former USC running back Quinten Joyner suffers season-ending injury

Former USC running back Quinten Joyner suffers season-ending injury

On Monday, the current USC football team suffered a blow when the Trojans learned that they will likely be without offensive lineman DJ Wingfield this season. That same day, a former USC player was also lost for the year, as Texas Texh running back Quinten Joyner suffered a torn ACL, per Pete Nakos of On3.

As a redshirt freshman at USC last season, Joyner rushed for 478 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding 89 receiving yards and a score through the air. He was seemingly set to take over as the Trojans’ lead running back in 2025 following the departure of Woody Marks for the NFL. However, he elected to enter the transfer portal prior to the Las Vegas Bowl, reportedly due to an NIL dispute.

Joyner landed at Texas Tech, joining a Red Raiders team that has been receiving a good amount of hype in the Big 12. With Joyner now out for the season, they will now be forced to look elsewhere for production at the running back position.

Meanwhile, the Trojans were busy in the portal at the position themselves, adding New Mexico transfer Eli Sanders and JUCO back Waymond Jordan. Those two, along with sophomore Bryan Jackson, figure to get the majority of the carries for USC this fall.

College football Week 0: Big 12 offering value in Iowa State vs. Kansas State, Kansas 1st half and TE prop

Week 0 of college football is almost here. The Inside the Lines team conceived of, developed and powers the SportsLine model. The Inside the Lines betting system combines 1) our strongest projected values, 2) with relevant supporting trends and 3) pinpointed best lines and prices to identify our Best Bets. In a majority of cases lines move in our direction so you will want to ACT NOW before lines move and you lose value.

College Football Week 0 Best Bets

Iowa State +3 (-110, FanDuel) vs. Kansas State

In our latest simulation, we actually have Iowa State with just over a 50% chance of winning this game outright. When looking at a Neutral site game, its important to look at both team’s road splits to see how well they travel. Iowa State went 5-2 SU on the road last season, while Kansas State went just 3-3 SU and 1-5 ATS. Iowa State had a positive turnover margin on the road last season, while K State did not, and that could be a key factor here. K State coughed the ball up twice in their 21-29 loss to Iowa State last season.

Kansas -6.5 (-120, DraftKings) 1st Half vs. Fresno State

It’s easy to forget that Kansas had several first place votes in the BIG12 preseason poll last season before going just 5-7. Kansas’ major problem was on the road where they went just 1-5. They started to turn things around late in the season, but much of that had to do with winning two games outright (Iowa State and Colorado) as home underdogs. Kansas was around +8 in point differential in their FBS home games last season compared to -6.5 on the road.

Fresno State also had big home/road splits. Fresno was +11 in home games and -11 in road games. Fresno has a new coach and…

  • Three Oregon players named preseason AP All-Americans

Three Oregon players named preseason AP All-Americans

The Oregon Ducks have three players that were named preseason AP All-Americans, matching the number the Ducks had in 2024.

Junior safety Dillon Thieneman leads the charge as the Ducks’ lone first-team honoree. Redshirt junior running back Makhi Hughes and junior defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei both earned second-team honors.

Oregon has players on both sides of the ball on the preseason All-American list in 2025, after all three honorees came from the offense last year in quarterback Dillon Gabriel, receiver Tez Johnson and offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius.

What To Expect From Oregon’s Preseason All-Americans

All three 2024 preseason All-Americans earned second-team honors. However, similar to Gabriel, Thieneman and Hughes earn the honor after transferring in this offseason.

Thieneman is a transfer from Purdue, who led the Big Ten with 104 tackles and started all 12 games for the Boilermakers last year. He also collected four tackles for loss, broke up seven passes and had one sack.

In his freshman year at Purdue, Thieneman was a third-team AP All-American and the FWAA Defensive Freshman of the Year.

Hughes is a transfer from Tulane, and was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist last year. The Tulane transfer played in 14 games last season and ran for 1,401 yards, which ranked 10th in the FBS, and had 15 touchdowns.

Hughes also caught 19 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns, and was named to the All-AAC first team. In his redshirt freshman year, Hughes was a College Football Network Honorable Mention All-Freshman and the AAC Rookie of the Year.
