College football recruiting expenses by conference: SEC stands out as Georgia spends big for success in 2022

How much does it cost to buy the resources necessary to win a national championship? If you ask the two-time reigning champion Georgia Bulldogs, the answer is $16,518,859. The Bulldogs spent that much between 2017-22 on recruiting expenses, which was more than $5 million more than any other program in the country over the same period, according to analysis of public records obtained by USA Today for Power Five schools. The gap between Georgia and No. 2 spender Alabama almost matches the difference between Alabama and Nebraska.

Recruiting budgets can cover a wide variety of expenses during the process, including vast recruiting departments, transportation, visits and much more. While spending does not guarantee success, seven of the last eight titles were won by schools in the top three in recruiting spending: Georgia, Alabama and Clemson.

It’s worth noting there was a downswing in spending in 2021 — for obvious reasons. The pandemic severely limited recruiting expenses, but it bounced back in a major way in 2022 with record spending across the board. Additionally, schools compile these numbers differently, which impacts comparison. Still, the bottom-line number gives us a baseline comparison.

Private schools were not included in USA Today’s analysis as they are not subject to records requests. Additionally, data could not be found for Pittsburgh, which is not subject to FOIA requests under Pennsylvania law.

Where Texas lands in ESPN’s future quarterback power rankings

ESPN recently released their future power rankings for the top 25 quarterback rooms in college football.

The projections take into account each program’s position group for the next three seasons (2023, 2024 and 2025). The state of current rosters, committed recruits and likelihood of transfer is all taken into consideration.

For Texas in particular, they have to feel pleased with where their quarterback room is right now. Returning starter Quinn Ewers appears to have turned the corner and progressed this offseason and talented signal-callers Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning are waiting in the wings.

The Longhorns quarterback room landed among the top 10 in ESPN’s rankings. USC took the top overall spot with returning starter Caleb Williams and former five-star Malachi Nelson set to take over when Williams departs for the NFL draft after the 2023 season.

Here’s a look at ESPN’s top 10 future quarterback power rankings.

  • 2023 Michigan football spring game live stream, watch online, TV channel, start time, storylines to follow

2023 Michigan football spring game live stream, watch online, TV channel, start time, storylines to follow

Michigan enters 2023 in a better place than it’s been in a long time. In the last two seasons, the Wolverines have won a pair of Big Ten titles and made as many College Football Playoff appearances. Even if they’re still waiting for that first playoff win, at least two dominant wins against Ohio State — which came after eight straight losses — alleviate the sting.

Can the Wolverines make it three straight Big Ten titles in 2023? Can they pick up their first playoff win? There’s a lot of time left to figure that out, but first things first, the Wolverines need to get through the spring. The first phase of any new season is spring practice, and Michigan’s wraps up Saturday, April 1, at The Big House with the annual spring game.

Here’s what you need to know about this year’s game.

How to watch 2023 Michigan spring game live

    Date: Saturday, April 1 | Time: 3 p.m. ET
Location: Michigan Stadium — Ann Arbor, Michigan
TV channel: Big Ten Network | Live stream: fuboTV (try for free)

    2023 Michigan spring game storylines

    1. It’s J.J. McCarthy’s show this year: There’s a different vibe around the QB position in Ann Arbor this year. Last spring, it was an open competition between J.J. McCarthy and returning starter Cade McNamara. The competition did not get settled in the spring. In fact, it went into the season when Jim Harbaugh announced both players would start games during the nonconference schedule before the team made a final decision. In the end, McCarthy took the job and led Michigan to another Big Ten title and the College Football Playoff. McNamara has since transferred to Iowa, and McCarthy begins the spring as the unquestioned starter.

    2. There are a lot of new faces in the trenches: With the transfer portal, roster churn is a…

  • Florida takes named new leader for blue-chip safety by On3

Florida takes named new leader for blue-chip safety by On3

When McKinney (Texas) safety Xavier Filsaime announced his top five of Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oregon and USC, it was the Bulldogs that were considered the leaders in the race for one of the nation’s top defensive back recruits. Now, Florida can lay claim to that title, at least according to the new numbers posted by the On3 recruiting prediction machine.

The Gators now boast 85.9% odds to land the Lone Star State native, with Georgia in a distant second place at 3.5 percent. Corey Bender of Gators Online submitted an expert prediction in favor of Florida for Filsaime, which is why the numbers are so skewed.

“It was the visit on March 10, however, that cemented Florida as a real contender,” Bender wrote.

Filsaime got to meet with UF’s new defensive coordinator, Austin Armstrong, and the duo really hit it off. There may have been some questions about Armstrong’s youth when he was announced as Billy Napier’s new defensive play caller, but he’s at least hit the ground running in the recruiting department

Filsaime seems like Florida’s to lose at this point, but those who follow recruiting closely know that nothing is guaranteed until a letter of intent is signed. And even then, it doesn’t always work out.

Nabbing a five-star recruit, by 247Sports’ measure, would be massive for Florida. He’s ranked No. 44 overall on the 247Sports composite and is No. 3 among safeties in the class.

  • USC football recruiting: Duce Robinson, five-star TE in 2023 class, commits to Trojans over Georgia

USC football recruiting: Duce Robinson, five-star TE in 2023 class, commits to Trojans over Georgia

USC added a commitment from the only five-star prospect left on the board in the 2023 recruiting class as tight end Duce Robinson committed to the Trojans on Thursday over Georgia. The addition of Robinson pushes USC up four spots to the No. 8 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings with three five-star commits joining the program this year.

Robinson is a special playmaker at tight end who rates as the No. 1 player at his position and No. 19 overall recruit in the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports. The Phoenix, Arizona, native is the only tight end rated even top 50 in the nation. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, Robinson has the ideal build for a tight end who can contribute both as an elite receiver and dynamic blocker.

“Robinson has unlimited potential with his skill set and physical abilities to be an all conference performer for multiple years,” 247Sports national recruiting expert Chris Singletary wrote of Robinson in 2021. “I see him as a player that has NFL ability and should be an early round pick in his future.”

In addition to his prodigious talents as a tight end, Robinson is considered a pro-level outfield prospect for the 2023 MLB Draft. Baseball America rated Robinson the No. 123 player heading into February. His massive frame has drawn comparisons to Aaron Judge, which slowed down his recruiting process. Ultimately, though, he has reaffirmed his decision to pick college football with his commitment on Thursday.

“I hundred percent plan on committing and signing to a school and being there whenever move-in day is,” Robinson previously told 247Sports.

  • Ex-Auburn coach Gus Malzahn believes Hugh Freeze will have Tigers challenging Alabama, Nick Saban

Ex-Auburn coach Gus Malzahn believes Hugh Freeze will have Tigers challenging Alabama, Nick Saban

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze topped Alabama coach Nick Saban in 2014 and 2015 while Freeze was coaching Ole Miss, which explains why he was so attractive to the Auburn administration when he was tabbed to take over the role previously occupied by Bryan Harsin. Freeze, along with former Auburn and current UCF coach Gus Malzahn and Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, are the only active Power Five coaches who have topped Saban more than once.

Malzahn served as coach of the Tigers from 2013-20, and he developed a close relationship with Freeze as they worked their way through the coaching ranks before arriving in the SEC. Malzahn believes that Freeze is in a perfect spot to recapture the magic at Auburn and challenge Saban on an annual basis.

“He will,” Malzahn said when asked by Sports Illustrated whether Freeze will pose the same threat to Saban as he did in 2014 and 2015.

Freeze knows that topping Saban, with whom he interviewed after being dismissed from Ole Miss prior to the 2017 season, is job No. 1 on The Plains.

“Yeah, I want to beat the crap out of him during the Iron Bowl, but we are friends,” Freeze told Sports Illustrated.

Malzahn knows — more than most — what resources are available at Auburn. He led the Tigers to within 13 seconds of a national title during his first season leading the program in 2013. He also served as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator when Heisman Trophy-winner Cam Newton led them to the national title in 2010.

“I think Auburn and Hugh is a really good match,” Malzahn said. “Auburn is an unbelievable place. Hugh is really, really good. I’m excited for both parties. You can win the whole thing there. Unbelievable fan base and support. He’s coming at a great time with NIL and the new facility. Everything came…

  • Michigan football announces 2023 annual team trip location

Michigan football announces 2023 annual team trip location

Michigan football made headlines in the college football world for years by doing something teams just don’t do — at least not football programs. Jim Harbaugh took his team abroad, where they could learn all about different cultures while experiencing different things.

It started in 2017, when Harbaugh took the team to Rome, Italy. The team actually held practices there on top of sightseeing and learning. The following year, the team went to Paris, and South Africa the year after that. Then COVID hit in 2020, and the trips were put on hiatus. But with the world opening back up, the team got its feet wet again by traveling the state of Michigan last summer.

Now, the program is set to be on the move again, with the team announcing via video on Twitter that Michigan football will be headed to not just one location, but multiple this spring: Washington D.C., New York City, Gettysburg (Pa.), as well as Canton and Cleveland, Ohio.

It will be interesting to see how the logistics work and how long the trip will be given that generally the team has mostly stuck to one area or region — the trip to Normandy while in France and the state of Michigan tour, aside.

This will be the second domestic trip for the team, although it could be counted as the third, as Jim Harbaugh took the program to IMG Academy in Florida for the first week of spring practice back in 2016.
