Texas A&M DE coach Terry Price dies at 55: Longtime SEC assistant served as key recruiter for alma mater

    USATSI

Texas A&M defensive ends coach Terry Price, a longtime SEC assistant and former Aggie football standout, has died at age 55, the university announced Friday.

Price ranked as one of the top defensive line coaches in college football during a career in the SEC that spanned nearly 30 years. Between 1995 and 2011, Price split his time between Auburn and Ole Miss, working under Tommy Tuberville and later Houston Nutt. After briefly agreeing to rejoin Tuberville at Texas Tech, Price changed course and ultimately joined his alma mater as Texas A&M ventured into the SEC in 2012.

“Terry was not only a great Aggie, football coach and recruiter, he was an even better husband, father and man,” Aggie head coach Jimbo Fisher said in statement from the university. “The impact he had on this program and his players is immeasurable. Our football family has suffered an incredible loss. We will continue to hold Kenya and the boys in our thoughts and prayers.”

Under Price’s watch, the Aggies became a defensive line factory. In 2014, Price landed No. 1 national recruit Myles Garrett from Arlington (Texas) Martin High School and develop him into the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Since joining the Aggies in 2012, Price helped recruit and develop nine NFL Draft picks, all of whom were selected in the first four rounds.

In 2015, Price shifted over to primarily focus on defensive ends. When the Aggies added rising star defensive line coach Elijah Robinson to work with Price three years later, Texas A&M’s defensive line recruiting hit the…

  • USC beat Wisconsin in multiple Rose Bowls; Badgers beat UCLA in multiple Rose Bowls

USC beat Wisconsin in multiple Rose Bowls; Badgers beat UCLA in multiple Rose Bowls

The USC Trojans versus the Wisconsin Badgers is going to be a ton of fun, especially with Lincoln Riley going up against Luke Fickell in one of the best coaching matchups of the new Big Ten era. Let’s not forget that Fickell was a rumored option to come to USC before the Trojans hired Riley in November of 2021.

The Trojans and Badgers have played seven times, with USC leading the series 6-1, including a couple of Rose Bowl victories.

This is a two-play matchup, meaning the two schools play each other in both 2024 and 2025. The previous meeting came in the 2015 Holiday Bowl with Wisconsin winning, 23-21.

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports offered more details on this series:

“USC pulled out one-possession Rose Bowl wins against Wisconsin in 1953 (7-0) and 1963 (42-37). The Trojans were 6-0 in the all-time series before the Badgers won the 2015 Holiday Bowl with a 29-yard field goal with under three minutes left.”

Whereas USC has defeated Wisconsin in multiple Rose Bowls, the Badgers beat the UCLA Bruins in two different Rose Bowls, first in 1994 and then again in 1999. It’s another sign of how good the Granddaddy has generally been to USC.

  • Deion Sanders to undergo emergency surgery for blood clots in legs, unlikely to have foot amputated

Deion Sanders to undergo emergency surgery for blood clots in legs, unlikely to have foot amputated

    Getty Images

Deion Sanders will undergo emergency surgery to treat two blood clots in his legs — one in his right and one in his left — he announced in a video Thursday. The procedure, scheduled for Friday, comes amid ongoing blood flow issues that have plagued Sanders dating back to his days at Jackson State.

“Now this is what happened. I went to the doctors the other day to check myself out and I have two clots in my leg. One in my right leg, one in my left leg in my thigh,” Sanders said. “Now I have a procedure tomorrow to try and get those clots so I can have proper blood flow through the leg so I can fix the toes.”

News of the impending surgery first surfaced from Adam “Pacman” Jones, who updated Sanders’ condition during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Sanders additionally said it is unlikely he’ll have to amputate his left foot due to the same blood clot issues, which was the topic in a recent episode of “The Pregame Show,” a YouTube channel documenting the Buffaloes football program. In the episode, it was revealed Sanders could lose his left foot if he were to undergo another surgery. University of Colorado vascular surgeons Dr. Donald Jacobs and Dr. Max Wohlauer told Sanders that in that clip if the current pain in a dislocated toe isn’t dealt with soon it could lead to a more serious condition that will result in the amputation.

“There’s no talk of amputation or any of that whatsoever,” Sanders said in his most recent video. “The doctors were just telling me worst comes to…

  • USC football regular-season history vs Ohio State: 1949

USC football regular-season history vs Ohio State: 1949

The USC Trojans and Ohio State Buckeyes met multiple times in the 1940s. Ohio State won the national title in 1942. USC made four Rose Bowls from 1943 through 1947. At the end of the decade, Ohio State produced a Rose Bowl season, but the Buckeyes couldn’t defeat a USC team which labored through a difficult season.

Ohio State might have finished No. 6 in the polls at the conclusion of the 1949 college football season, but USC stood its ground against that particular iteration of the Buckeyes. OSU and USC tied in the 1949 game in Los Angeles, 13-13.

The Trojans finished with a 5-3-1 record and Ohio State ended up at 7-1-2 with a Rose Bowl victory. This was the only season in Wesley Fesler’s eight-year coaching career (four years at Ohio State, three at Minnesota, one at Pittsburgh) in which he made and won a bowl game. Fesler was the Ohio State coach who immediately preceded Woody Hayes.

USC coach Jeff Cravath was excellent during the World War II era and immediately thereafter, but following the 1947 season, his Trojan tenure ran out of steam. The 1949 campaign would be his last winning season. He endured a sub-.500 record in 1950 and would be replaced by Jess Hill before the 1951 season.

  • 2023 SEC win totals, odds, picks: Predictions as Georgia eyes perfection, LSU takes the next step

2023 SEC win totals, odds, picks: Predictions as Georgia eyes perfection, LSU takes the next step

With Texas and Oklahoma set to enter the SEC in 2024, divisions will soon be eliminated and the conference landscape we’ve known since 1992 will go the way of the dinosaurs. Traditionalists have one more season savor the old ways before things get nuts.

Both the LSU and Tennessee secured victories over Alabama a year ago, but now the Crimson Tide will have a shot at revenge with the Tigers and Volunteers set to make trips to Tuscaloosa.

Two-time national champion Georgia will look to continue its dominance after running the table and flattening TCU in the College Football Playoff National Championship in January. Coach Kirby Smart will be breaking in a new quarterback after Stetson Bennett IV guided the team to back-to-back national titles.

What do the oddsmakers think of the 2023 SEC season? Let’s break down the Caesars Sportsbook win total projections and make game-by-game predictions (subject to many, many changes).

    Alabama

    Over/under 10.5 wins

Wins: Middle Tennessee, at South Florida, Ole Miss, at Mississippi State, at Texas A&M, Arkansas, Tennessee, at Kentucky, Chattanooga, at AuburnLosses: Texas, LSU

The Crimson Tide have a ton of questions (by Alabama standards) heading into the season, starting at quarterback where they picked up former Notre Dame signal-caller Tyler Buchner to compete with Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe. That’s a big problem considering they’ll host Texas and star Quinn Ewers — who torched the Tide in last season’s matchup before leaving the game with injury — in Week 2. LSU is going to be tough as well considering the stability on the roster after last season’s run to the division title. The saving grace for coach Nick Saban is that the road schedule is a piece of cake save for the always-wild trip to…

  • Stanford football recruiting: Elijah Brown commits as Cardinal make splash by landing No. 3 QB in 2024 class

Stanford football recruiting: Elijah Brown commits as Cardinal make splash by landing No. 3 QB in 2024 class

Stanford secured a major recruiting victory Sunday entering its debut season under coach Troy Taylor, landing a commitment from four-star 2024 quarterback and Elite 11 finalist Elijah Brown. The Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei High School product is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 33 overall prospect and No. 3 at his position in the 2024 recruiting cycle

Brown had 16 known offers during his recruitment, according to 247Sports. In-state foes USC and UCLA were finalists along with Stanford, but Brown opted to take his talents to the Bay Area rather than staying in his native Southern California.

“I felt really comfortable there,” Brown told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins. “I liked the UCLA visit a lot too. Both schools were great, but I love the all-around fit for me at Stanford and it felt like home. … Coach Taylor likes to throw the ball around a lot and it’s an offense I think I can really thrive in. I got to spend a lot of time with coach Taylor and [Quarterbacks coach Tyler Osborne] on the visit because I stayed a day longer and felt a really good connection with those guys.”

Brown becomes the highest-ranked recruit by 247Sports to commit to Stanford for the 2024 cycle. He’s the third Cardinal commit in this cycle to boast a four-star ranking, joining edge rushers Dylan Stephenson and Naki Tuakoi. Stanford’s 2024 recruiting class now ranks ninth nationally, according to 247Sports.

Mater Dei is no stranger to producing successful quarterbacks over the years. Notable signal-callers who’ve gone through the school include Heisman winners Matt Leinart and Bryce Young, the latter of whom was taken No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2023 NFL Draft after starring for Alabama.

Brown ended his junior season in 2022 throwing for 2,785…

  • Iron Bowl listed as one of top games of 2024 SEC schedule

Iron Bowl listed as one of top games of 2024 SEC schedule

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns will join the SEC officially in 2024. The two storied athletic programs received their initial assignments last week as the SEC announced the 2024 football slate.

Many analysts and writers have shared their opinion’s on each program’s 2024 draw. One of the more recent writers to do so is USA TODAY Sports’ Jace Evans.

Evans ranked the top 10 games of the 2024 SEC schedule, with Auburn earning a spot on the docket. The Tigers’ annual rivalry game with Alabama made the cut at No. 10.

With the elimination of divisions starting in 2024, each team was granted to keep one permanent opponent. Evans is thrilled to know that the Iron Bowl will stay alive next season.

The Iron Bowl is consistently one of the more interesting rivalry matchups in the SEC, even if it’s historically fairly one-sided. It’s nice it’s not going away, though, and it will be interesting to see how Auburn fares vs. Alabama in what should be their second season under coach Hugh Freeze.

The Iron Bowl is one of two games on Evans’ top ten list that doesn’t involve either Oklahoma or Texas. The top game featured is Alabama-Georgia, with several others such as Texas-Texas A&M, Oklahoma-Tennessee, and Texas-Arkansas also being named.
