Jan. 19—Godley Wildcat football standout Landon Thigpen played in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl on Jan. 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Thigpen played as a running back for the West team, which won the game 35-28. The team was coached by Seneca Wallace, a National Football League veteran who played quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks from 2003-09, the Cleveland Browns from 2010-11 and the Green Bay Packers in 2013.

  • Austin Mack transferring to Alabama: Ex-Washington QB plans to follow coach Kalen DeBoer to Crimson Tide

Austin Mack transferring to Alabama: Ex-Washington QB plans to follow coach Kalen DeBoer to Crimson Tide

    Getty Images

Washington transfer quarterback Austin Mack intends to transfer to Alabama, following coach Kalen DeBoer from the Huskies to the Crimson Tide, he announced Thursday. Mack was the No. 73 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports, and received offers from a handful of Pac-12 schools before committing to the Huskies.

The 6-foot-6, 226 pounder heads to Alabama with four seasons of eligibility remaining after redshirting during his lone season at Washington. He did not see any playing time for the Huskies during their run to a College Football Playoff National Championship appearance.

Mack was initially a member of the 2024 cycle before reclassifying and graduating a year early from Folsom (California) High School. Mack led Folsom to 12 wins and CIF Sacramento Division 1 championship in 2022, passing for 3,498 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Mack is the first player — transfer or high school prospect — to commit to Alabama since DeBoer took over as coach on Jan. 12.

Mack brings depth to Alabama QB room

In committing to Alabama, Mack joins a quarterbacks room that already features an incumbent starter in Jalen Milroe. Despite inconsistent play — especially early in the season — Milroe’s efforts were enough to lead Alabama to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Milroe, who still has two seasons of eligibility remaining, finished the year with 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air. He ran for an additional 531 yards and 12 touchdowns.

While it seems unlikely he’ll unseat Milroe in 2024, Mack has a solid chance to emerge as the…

  • Incoming freshman DB Jameer Grimsley enters the transfer portal

Incoming freshman DB Jameer Grimsley enters the transfer portal

New Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer has lost another defensive back to the NCAA transfer portal. This time it’s incoming freshman four-star Jameer Grimsley who has decided to move on before ever suiting up for the Crimson Tide.

Grimsley becomes the eighth defensive back from Alabama to enter the transfer portal this offseason joining Caleb Downs, Trey Amos, Kristian Story, Earl Little, Dezz Ricks, Jake Pope, and Antonio Kite.

Losing Grimsley is not ideal but the Tide still has a ton of talent in the backend of the defense heading into 2024 with time to make more additions ahead of signing day or in the summer transfer portal window.

  • South Alabama expected to promote offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to replace Kane Wommack

South Alabama expected to promote offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to replace Kane Wommack

    USATSI

South Alabama is expected to promote offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to fill its vacant coaching position, 247Sports reports. Applewhite served under former coach Kane Wommack for the past three seasons until Wommack left to become Alabama’s defensive coordinator.

Applewhite, 45, helped assemble one of the top offenses in the Sun Belt this season. The Jaguars averaged over 33 points and 440 yards per game — both of which ranked near the top of the conference. South Alabama capped the 2023 season with a 59-10 win over Eastern Michigan in the 68 Ventures Bowl.

This would mark Applewhite’s second opportunity to lead a program. He compiled a 15-11 overall record at Houston from 2017-18.

Applewhite played at Texas from 1998-2001, setting several program records he still owns to this day. After a brief stint in the NFL with the New England Patriots, he returned to the Longhorns to serve as a graduate assistant. He was hired by Syracuse in 2005 as the team’s quarterback coach and was the offensive coordinator at Rice and Alabama before returning to his alma mater from 2008-13. He worked under Tom Herman offensive coordinator at Houston from 2015-17, then took over the Cougars program when Herman left for the Texas job. After Houston, he worked as an analyst on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff from 2019-20 before he was plucked by the Jaguars in 2021.

The massive ripple effect is centered around former Alabama coach Nick Saban’s retirement. The Crimson Tide tabbed Washington coach Kalen DeBoer to succeed him. One of DeBoer’s first moves was to poach Wommack form South…

  • Former Notre Dame Five-Star Target to Transfer from Alabama

Former Notre Dame Five-Star Target to Transfer from Alabama

A one-time major target of Notre Dame’s that ultimately enrolled at Alabama is on the move.  Safety Caleb Downs, who had a five-star ranking in the 2023 recruiting cycle, is entering the transfer portal.

Downs is originally from Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek and chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and North Carolina.

Downs made an official visit to Notre Dame in June of 2022 but the Irish ultimately came up short.  Will they go back to the portal and attempt a do-over with Downs?

I would think Georgia is the favorite to land his talents considering where he’s from but whoever ends up with Downs will be getting a truly great defender.  As a true freshman this year for the Crimson Tide he recorded 70 tackles, a pair of interceptions, and forced a fumble.

Downs will have three years of eligibility remaining.

  • Ohio State hires Ross Bjork as AD: Ex-Texas A&M, Ole Miss administrator tapped to replace Gene Smith

Ohio State hires Ross Bjork as AD: Ex-Texas A&M, Ole Miss administrator tapped to replace Gene Smith

Ohio State has hired Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork to fill the same role for the Buckeyes, the school announced Tuesday. Bjork, who has experience across the SEC, replaces longtime Buckeyes administrator Gene Smith, who announced his retirement in August 2023 after serving in the position for 18 years. Bjork will begin his tenure at Ohio State on July 1.

“Few athletics directors have established such an impressive and strong record of success in athletics, in the classroom and throughout the community,” Ohio State president Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. said in a press release. “The bar is incredibly high at Ohio State, and we have found in Ross a highly intelligent and effective leader – not to mention a fierce competitor.”

Bjork is viewed as one of the elite fundraisers in college athletics and has overseen success at every stop. He was named an assistant athletic director for development at just 29 years old at Missouri, and he became the youngest athletic director in the FBS when he was hired at Western Kentucky in 2010.

“I have been extraordinarily blessed to be a product of college athletics as a student athlete and fortunate to work with so many outstanding student-athletes, coaches, staff and university leaders throughout my career, and Ohio State represents the culmination of these efforts,” Bjork said in a press release. “To be a part of Buckeye Nation, along with its storied traditions and long history of achievement, is a tremendous honor and a welcome challenge for me and our family. I can’t wait to get started.”

He helped Willie Taggart turn WKU into a consistent winner before landing at Ole Miss at the outset of the Hugh Freeze era. The Rebels emerged as a national contender with Ole Miss even pulling two upsets during the…

  • Washington hires Jedd Fisch: Ex-Arizona coach replaces Kalen DeBoer, leads Huskies into Big Ten

Washington hires Jedd Fisch: Ex-Arizona coach replaces Kalen DeBoer, leads Huskies into Big Ten

Washington has hired coach Jedd Fisch away from Arizona after three seasons, the university announced. Fisch replaces Kalen DeBoer, who left for the Alabama job this week following the retirement of Nick Saban. Details of Fisch’s deal are not yet official but it is believed to be worth $7.75 million annually over seven years, according to multiple reports.

Fisch, 47, executed an impressive turnaround for the Wildcats, culminating with a 10-win season in 2023. He solidified his reputation as an offensive guru after a winding career including numerous NFL assistant jobs and coordinator gigs with major college programs.

“It is truly an honor to join the University of Washington and do my part in carrying on the tradition of a storied football program and world-class university,” said Fisch in a UW release. “The unbelievable success of the Huskies the last two seasons demonstrates what UW is capable of and I cannot wait to compete for Big Ten and national championships with tremendous young men and an outstanding coaching staff that we will assemble.”

Fisch proved during his three-year tenure at Arizona that he can successfully build a winning program amid challenging circumstances. He inherited a team that finished 0-5 in 2020 and progressively made the Wildcats more competitive. Arizona reached double-digit victories for just the fourth time in program history this season, finishing with a seven-game winning streak capped by a 38-24 win over Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl.

Arizona’s breakthrough in 2023 centered around the emergence of quarterback Noah Fifita, who was named the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. Fifita actually made his first career start against Washington on Sept. 30. Though Arizona lost the game 31-24, his…
