  • Northwestern, coach David Braun rebuilding program from the ground up a year after Pat Fitzgerald’s ouster

Northwestern, coach David Braun rebuilding program from the ground up a year after Pat Fitzgerald’s ouster

EVANSTON, Ill. — From the edge of Lake Michigan, you can see forever.

That would be a heck of a marketing slogan for Northwestern football this season. Perhaps the most impressive football facility in the country — those views! — now sits next to a cool pop-up temporary stadium meant to hold 15,000 fans this season, where you can almost hear waves washing up on the shore of this idyllic campus.

But for a Wildcats program slightly more than a year removed from the revelation of a hazing scandal, that marketing slogan wouldn’t be conveying the entire story. While nearby Ryan Field undergoes what is essentially a from-the-studs-up renovation costing nine figures, Northwestern football is undergoing a rebuild of a different kind.

At last count, 40 former Northwestern players have filed suit seeking damages from the fallout of the alleged hazing within the program revealed last year. Meanwhile, former coach Pat Fitzgerald has filed his own $130 million wrongful termination suit against the school.

The Northwestern program he left behind exists somewhat at an emotional, legal and, yes, perhaps even a football crossroads. It is riding the momentum of an eight-win season guided by Big Ten coach of the year David Braun. But as much as there is to celebrate here, there is still a dark chapter in the program’s history yet to be finalized.

“I’ll paint a picture for you,” tailback Cam Porter told CBS Sports. “Two weeks before camp starts, your head coach that recruited you — kind of built Northwestern’s program — just gets fired out of nowhere.”

Big Ten updates iconic map commercial to include Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA

The Big 10 logo appears next to the Oregon logo during Oregon football’s media day July 29 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

As Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA have officially been welcomed to the Big Ten, the conference also released a new update to the iconic “Maps” commercial aired on TVs during Big Ten sporting events over the years.

The commercial first debuted roughly a decade ago in 2014, when Rutgers and Maryland joined the conference.

Ten years later, the Big Ten map now expands all the way to the West Coast.

The commercial opens in the Pacific Northwest, showing Oregon’s Autzen Stadium and Washington’s Husky Stadium before moving to Los Angeles to depict USC and UCLA. From there the commercial is familiar to most Big Ten fans of the past decade, before culminating with Rutgers in New Jersey on the East Coast.

  • Michigan’s Sherrone Moore could face suspension, show-cause penalty from NCAA in sign-stealing investigation

Michigan’s Sherrone Moore could face suspension, show-cause penalty from NCAA in sign-stealing investigation

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore could be penalized as the NCAA prepares to release its notice of allegations against the program into an alleged sign-stealing scheme. Michigan received a draft of the NOA this past week, CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd confirms, in which Moore is accused of deleting more than 50 text message exchanges between himself and ex-Wolverines staffer Connor Stalions, who is at the center of the scandal.

Among the possible penalties for Moore are a show-cause and one-game suspension since he would be considered a “repeat violator” due to a separate investigation, settled in April, for recruiting violations during the COVID-19 dead period. That case resulted in three years probation, fines and recruiting restrictions, as well as one-year show-cause for the five coaches involved.

However, these potential penalties for Moore could be subject to change as the NOA draft could change significantly between now and its formal release.

Currently, Moore’s allegations constitute a Level II violation; Level I violations are the most serious in the NCAA’s punishment process. Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh previously said he was unaware of Stalions’ alleged improper scouting, but Moore’s alleged level of involvement and the extent of his communication with Stalions was previously unclear.

Harbaugh, Stalions, and former staffers Chris Partridge and Denard Robinson are all accused of committing Level 1 violations. Additionally, the school faces a Level 1 violation charge for a “pattern of noncompliance.”

Stalions, who resigned last November, allegedly bought tickets for more than 30 games — many of them within the Big Ten — and used “illegal technology” to steal signs. Photos also appeared to show him on Central Michigan’s…

  • Report: New Michigan coach Sherrone Moore could face NCAA sanctions in Connor Stalions scandal

Report: New Michigan coach Sherrone Moore could face NCAA sanctions in Connor Stalions scandal

New Michigan coach Sherrone Moore could be facing NCAA sanctions stemming from the Connor Stalions scandal.

According to a report from ESPN, Moore is accused of deleting text messages to the disgraced ex-staffer on the same day that Stalions was revealed to be the leader of a scheme to decipher teams’ play calls via advanced scouting. Michigan is awaiting an official notice of allegations from the NCAA regarding the scandal, and Moore has been named in the draft.

    From ESPN:

The draft, which could be subject to change, states Moore could face a show-cause penalty and possibly a suspension for allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions in October 2023 on the same day that media reports revealed Stalions was leading an effort to capture the playcalling signals of future opponents.

The draft states that the texts were later recovered via “device imaging” and Moore “subsequently produced them to enforcement staff.” Moore is accused of committing a Level 2 violation, according to the draft.

Moore was Michigan’s longtime offensive coordinator and served as the team’s interim coach when Jim Harbaugh was suspended at the beginning and end of the season. Moore was promoted to head coach when Harbaugh left for a job with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Harbaugh’s suspension at the end of the regular season came from the Big Ten as part of the advanced scouting scheme. It’s against the rules to advance scout teams in person and Stalions had gone to future opponents’ games to gain knowledge of their signals.

According to the ESPN report, the NCAA has also verified that Stalions was on the sideline at Central Michigan for the Chippewas’ game against Michigan State in Week 1 last season. Stalions was shown in CMU gear on the sideline, though it’s still unclear how he gained…

  • Tennessee football recruiting: Faizon Brandon, top overall prospect in Class of 2026, picks Vols over Alabama

Tennessee football recruiting: Faizon Brandon, top overall prospect in Class of 2026, picks Vols over Alabama

Tennessee landed a historic commitment Saturday when Faizon Brandon, the top overall prospect in the Class of 2026, announced his commitment to the Volunteers live on CBS Sports HQ. The five-star quarterback picked Tennessee over Alabama, LSU and NC State to give the Vols their first-ever pledge from a top-ranked player in the 247Sports era.

Brandon received the No. 1 ranking in the initial Top247 rankings in April following a standout sophomore season at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 6-foot-4 QB led Grimsley to a 13-1 record while connecting on 69% of his passes for 3,026 yards with 36 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also flashed his mobility with 528 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.

The young star boasts what 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins described as “a rare blend of pocket-passer size and dual-threat athleticism to go along with a high-powered arm.” Though he plans to stick exclusively with football at the next level, Brandon’s athleticism is also evident on the hardwood, where he offered significant contributions to a Grimsley basketball team that finished 23-6 in 2023-24.

Brandon is Tennessee’s first commitment from the Class of 2026 and a potential anchor for the Volunteers to build around as they seek to cement their spot as one of the nation’s top offensive programs behind fourth-year coach Josh Heupel’s up-tempo scheme.

    Scouting report on Brandon

With a rare combination of passing precision and mobility, Brandon will have the tools to compete for the starting job at Tennessee early in his career. Here is more on his game from Ivins’ scouting report:

Rhythmic as a passer, getting the ball out fast and to his playmakers. Likes to stay on schedule with his clean footwork and shows…

  • Kansas football players beaming about new-look Anderson Family Football Complex

Kansas football players beaming about new-look Anderson Family Football Complex

LAWRENCE — Each reaction by a Kansas football player as they entered the new-look Anderson Family Football Complex in late July effused joy and appreciation.

There was redshirt junior quarterback Jalon Daniels, pointing to how much different the facility looks as soon as you walk in the door. From the players’ lounge to the glass and more, it all seemed futuristic.

There was senior running back Devin Neal, highlighting the sauna and the cryotherapy chamber. He mentioned how much it meant to the older players on the team, like himself, to be able to see tangible improvements that their efforts on the field in recent years helped make possible.

There was senior cornerback Cobee Bryant, alluding to a wish he could experience it all for longer than just his last year. In addition to thanking everyone who made the upgrades possible, he talked about how much time he’s going to spend in the game room and training room and how he doesn’t intend on leaving.

Head coach Lance Leipold anticipated how anxious those players and more would be to see the progress that’s being made. He’d seen the reaction the team had in the past to the new locker room, and the new weight room. And considering how well everyone has handled the inconveniences of working around the renovations that have been ongoing for months, he couldn’t say enough about how much he appreciates them, too.

“It’s great to be able to see their faces,” Leipold said July 30, after the first practice of fall camp. “It’s like a Christmas Day type of thing. You can see they’re excited in some of the areas, and it was important for us to address the areas that…
