Many college football coaches in favor of ending spring transfer portal window, but legal challenges loom

A proposal to eliminate the college football spring transfer portal window has the sport buzzing, and though it appears the NCAA’s efforts are benevolent, many wonder if the organization will be able to enact such legislation without legal challenges from players.

The NCAA Football Oversight Committee recommended a proposal this week to eliminate the 15-day portal window in April, which could go into effect as early as this academic year. If that happens, athletic departments nationwide will be tasked with finalizing rosters in December amid arguably the most tumultuous time in college sports. Coupled with the high-school signing period, the 30-day portal window and the coaching carousel, school administrators will likely also ask their coaches to shrink their 120-man rosters to 105 in preparation for the new revenue-sharing model expected to be implemented July 1.

“It won’t pass,” a Group of Five coach told CBS Sports. “That’s a lawsuit, limiting players from leaving in the spring.”

Added another coach: “All it’s going to take is one kid who wants to transfer in April to sue.”

Only allowing player movement in the portal from Dec. 9 to Jan. 7 would certainly help stabilize rosters and eliminate tampering from other schools in the winter and spring, but it comes with a price.

“For first-year staffs, not having that second window is brutal,” Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall told CBS Sports. “It’s gonna make it more challenging for first-year staffs to get their roster right because you’re already dealing with hiring a staff in December. By the time the coach gets there it’s already chaos with the portal and other stuff.”

Sumrall was hired away from Troy by Tulane in December. Five Tulane starters, including four on defense, transferred to…

  • Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz suspended for season-opening game over violations related to Cade McNamara recruitment

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz suspended for season-opening game over violations related to Cade McNamara recruitment

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz will serve a university-imposed, one-game suspension for the Hawkeyes’ season opener on Saturday, Aug. 31 vs. Illinois State for breaking NCAA rules by contacting a player before he was in the transfer portal, the school announced Thursday. The suspension is related to the recruitment of quarterback Cade McNamara, according to 247Sports.

Wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr is also suspended for the opener for the same reason. Assistant head coach and longtime Iowa staff member Seth Wallace will serve as the Hawkeyes’ acting head coach against Illinois State.

“I frequently tell our players to abide by the rules, and in this instance, I did not,” Ferentz said. “In 26 years as a head coach at Iowa — and more than four decades as a coach — this is my first potential Level II NCAA infraction. I made a mistake and would like to apologize to our players, university leadership, and our Hawkeye football fans. I know Coach Budmayr echoes those sentiments.”

Ferentz, 69, is entering his 26th season leading the Iowa football program as the longest-tenured coach in college football. He’s compiled a 196-119 record, and the Hawkeyes are coming off a 2023 season in which they won the Big Ten West before losing to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game.

“Coach Ferentz and I made the decision to self-impose the penalties, allowing the program to move forward without distraction,” Iowa athletic director Beth Goetz said. “I appreciate the accountability demonstrated and we will continue to fully cooperate with the NCAA through this process. I have confidence in Coach Ferentz and his leadership, and we look forward to…

Which teams could make a surprise run to the College Football Playoff?

Yahoo Sports’ Caroline Fenton names a pair of teams who could be darkhorse contenders to steal a playoff bid this fall.

    Video Transcript

Throw out everything that you think, you know about the college football playoff and enter the 12 team playoff.

Here’s a couple of teams that could shake things up in the postseason, keep an eye on NC State to keep things interesting.

Former Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson mccall transfers in with four years of starting experience under his belt and he’ll be paired with the reigning AC C rookie of the year and wide receiver Casey Concepcion and running back Jordan Waters who transfers in after an explosive year with Duke last season.

Plus the Wolfpack returned four out of the five starters on the offensive line.

NC State’s offense has the pieces to be explosive on top of a fairly manageable schedule.

If the Wolf pack can take down Tennessee and Charlotte early this season, then go on the road and beat Dabo Sweeney and the Tigers.

That could be just a strong enough resume to punch their ticket to the playoff.

Also do not sleep on Oklahoma while the Sooners could absolutely be considered dark horse contenders themselves.

The sec newcomers could really caused some postseason chaos by the sheer number of CFP contenders on their schedule.

They host Tennessee in week four, they take on rival Texas in Dallas, they host Alabama go on the road at Ole Miss and Missouri.

And finally round out the season at LSU, all teams that could find themselves competing for a playoff spot.

So no matter how Oklahoma’s season turns out they’ll have plenty of chances to spoil another contender’s path to the playoff.

2024 college football win total predictions, futures odds: Expert reveals over/under picks, best bets

Josh Heupel’s squad has managed 20 wins in the last two seasons (18 in the regular season) and oddsmakers have set Tennessee’s 2024 college football win total (regular-season only) at 9.5 games. However, with the over paying a +175 (bet $100 to win $175) premium, might there be value betting Tennessee to reach 10 or more wins as you bet college football futures?

The Vols have battle-tested offensive playmakers and one of the nation’s best pass rushers in James Pearce Jr. but they also play a tough schedule. So which side of that line should you be playing, and what other college football win totals should you be targeting? Quitman four-star prospect Akylin Dear, the top running back in Mississippi, announced his commitment to Alabama football on Tuesday via social media.

Dear — the No. 1 running back in the Class of 2025 and No. 3 recruit in the state, according to the 247Sports Composite — posted on social media: “I mean who wouldn’t RTR.”

The 6-foot, 210-pound senior from Quitman announced his decommitment from Ole Miss on June 28 and kept his options to three schools: Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

“You know Alabama is Running Back (University),” Dear told The Clarion Ledger. “They produce all the running backs .. . . The No. 1 thing is my family, and my family is all right; I know what’s going to be good for me. I know I’m gonna be there for the next three to four years.”

Quitman running back Akylin Dear, photographed in Ridgeland, Miss., Aug. 10, 2024, is a member of the 2024 Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen.

  • College football QB battles 2024: Ohio State, Duke give nod to star transfers; USC goes with bowl game hero

College football QB battles 2024: Ohio State, Duke give nod to star transfers; USC goes with bowl game hero

Quarterback battles are often the most fascinating part of the college football offseason. Especially in an era where the transfer portal and the promise of immediate playtime elsewhere has made it extremely difficult to have a solid succession plan in place.

Though coaches would love to have things settled well before the actual season starts, quarterback competitions often stretch deep into the fall. Some are still ongoing when the actual games kick off as teams will use early season tune-up contests to see if one signal caller can pull ahead of the other in a live setting.

Now, entering the last week of fall camp for a majority of schools around the nation, plenty of prominent programs have decided on a quarterback. Ohio State and Wisconsin have identified their offensive leaders as each tries to make a big impact in the Big Ten.

Elsewhere, College Football Playoff competitor Boise State went with a rather surprising decision for its quarterback. The Broncos were one of many Group of Five schools that decided to go with a more experienced option over exciting new transfer portal additions.

There’s still a lot to be settled, but here’s a rundown of the quarterback battles that have been decided as the 2024 season nears.

    Ohio State

It wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but Ohio State officially turned to Kansas State transfer Will Howard to guide its offense. Howard did have to surpass some stiff competition, primarily from returning backup Devin Brown and fellow transfer addition Julian Sayin (Alabama),…

  • Notre Dame OC Mike Denbrock knows just how ‘chaotic’ Kyle Field can be

Notre Dame OC Mike Denbrock knows just how ‘chaotic’ Kyle Field can be

Notre Dame offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Mike Denbrock addresses media after a Notre Dame football practice at Irish Athletic Center on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, in South Bend.

Unlike recent Texas A&M seasons, especially under former head coach Jimbo Fisher, the 2024 season opener vs. Notre Dame is extremely significant. It will place the Aggies on the main stage in prime time to usher in head coach Mike Elko’s inaugural campaign.

Elko, who spent the last two seasons as Duke’s head coach, is familiar with the Fighting Irish and HC Marcus Freeman, facing most of the current Notre Dame defense that will head to Kyle Field in less than two weeks, falling to the Irish 21-14 last season.

One of the new members of the Notre Dame staff, current offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, is very familiar with the challenges playing at Kyle Field presents after serving as LSU’s OC for the last two seasons.

Last week, Denbrock spoke with the local media and asked how the team is preparing for the road trip, his first trip back since LSU’s 38-23 loss in 2022.

“It’s a hornets net. It is loud. Chaotic… It is a very, very hard place for the visiting team to function, especially on the offensive side of the ball.”

With Notre Dame’s offensive line issues already posing a potential issue for the Irish offense, Texas A&M’s pass rush duo, led by defensive ends Nic Scourton and Shemar Stewart, could wreak havoc in front of a potentially sold-out Kyle Field.

No. 20-ranked Texas A&M will host No. 7-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ABC.
